NOORIE

an urban social justice centre

This 30,000 sq ft centre for social justice features an urban plaza enclosed in its center, providing shaded and beautiful sitting space that is shielded from the summer sun but allows in the winter sun.The roofs are mainly sloped, feature solar panels to ensure functional rain drainage, while the ramp sits on top of the auditorium and cafe. The building comprises 7 floors with 2 main cores, and circulation is divided by putting heavily footed areas on the bottom and more private programs on the upper floors. It has CLT Timber framing & glass panes, with some windows doubling as moss sheets to filter and cool air.

The USC Village is a stylistic anachronism covering 2500 sq ft and features a brutally gothic facade inspired by buildings within the USC campus. The extension school design incorporates scenic views, solar path, and program requirements to differentiate between public and semi-private zones; FF is for students and SF is for teachers. The cafeteria and black-box theatre are the lowest areas, followed by staff rooms and writing studios with a reception lobby and circulation zone. The tallest area comprises main drama classes with a grand stairway connecting both floors. The building has a double facade with concrete as the first layer and CLT panels cladded on top. They are designed to cover part window allowing light to enter in an interesting manner. The partings follow a particular design order.

SPIRITUALIZED

a church and a chapel for amite city, new orleans

The proposed church and chapel in Amite City is a striking architectural feat designed to withstand the frequent natural disasters that occur in the area, such as hurricanes. This building is a testament to the power of faith, strength, and resilience in the face of adversity. Its most distinctive feature is its round shape, chosen for its ability to better withstand hurricane-force winds. The building will be constructed using reinforced concrete and will have a bulky yet delicate appearance, creating a sense of strength and elegance. The structure covers an area of 6,000 sq ft.

CHIROPTERAN TABLE

a digitaly fabricated folded plate and origami project

The intention was to create a table that can be folded and stored flat when not in use, using the simplest shape of a triangle as the basic element. During the design process, each study model was analyzed for design failures and unexpected material properties. The initial materials used were paper, then cardboard, and eventually felt was added between boxboard layers. It was later decided that wood with felt covering was the best option. To ensure stability, magnets were placed on the four legs. Long cylindrical magnets were inserted into the drilled edges, taking care to avoid repelling each other due to their north and south poles.

SAO-SHACHI-TSUGI JOINT

traditional japaneese wooden joinery

Traditional Japanese construction uses joints with long, slender tenons known as saohozo (rod or pole tenons) and mortises called saomichi. These joints are reinforced with blind or stub tenons, as well as regular tenons cut into either side of the joint, to add extra strength. A straight drop-rod joint with keys called shachi is used to join two timbers, and haunched mortises are cut in both male and female sections to form slots into which the keys can be driven. One type of joint is called sanbouhako mechigai, which refers to a 3-faced boxed blind rod timber with keys. The mortise has a square blind U-shaped tenon cut on the face, and a haunched rod tenon and the U-shaped cavities fit into the mortised part, with keys inserted for reinforcement. Japanese cypress is a popular type of wood used in traditional Japanese construction due to its high resistance to rot, clear grain, and support strength after aging. Additionally, grooved wood pieces are often joined together to form sturdy 3D objects and produce longer pieces.

PAVILIONS

The site is divided into three zones: Zone A for entertainment, Zone B for shelter, and Zone C for recreation. The target audience is people using the bus and metro. All zones consist of urban plazas, waiting areas, seating, kiosks, and landscaping. The composite climate at the site requires walkable, usable, and accessible spaces. Bamboo has the ability to absorb greenhouse gases, is extremely versatile, and has a low cost since it is abundant. It also requires no painting, resulting in even lower costs and wastage. The site covers an area of 5,000 square feet.
