This course aims to become a dynamic forum for students who want to work in global health to acquire a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principal problems of maternal and reproductive health in low income countries, and the ability to debate, contrast and discuss key bottlenecks and challenges to improve the health of women in these areas. It integrates scientific evidence, interventions to improve health, and the political area and development.

Maternal and Reproductive Health Programme* 1. Reproductive and Sexual Health • Family planning (FP) programmes in resource-poor settings?

• Unwanted pregnancy. Unsafe abortions • Sexually transmitted infections: Prevention and case management • Violence against women and sexual violence • Human papillomavirus infections and cervical cancer: burden and impact, preventive strategies 2. Maternal Health • Antenatal care in developing countries • Emergency obstetric care • Maternal HIV infection. Impact on maternal and infant health. Preventive strategies for mother to child transmission of HIV infection (MTCT) • Maternal mortality: current trends, approaches in measuring maternal deaths, and establishing its causes • Burden and impact of malaria during pregnancy (MiP): limitations and challenges for MiP control and prevention 3. Advocacy for women’s health • Health policies and women: historical background and challenges and opportunities in the post 2015 scenario * Subject to change

Requirements Candidates should have demonstrated interest in global health and/or maternal and reproductive health studies and an undergraduate degree in a related field.

Assessment Students in the course will be evaluated individually using the following assessment tools: • Short dissertation on a maternal/reproductive health problem in relation with the contents addressed during the course and of interest for the student(50% of final grade).

• Active participation and contribution to class discussion and other in-class activities (50% of final grade).

Students will need to fulfil minimum 80% attendance of the hours of face-to-face class time (24h) to get evaluated for the course.
