DIRECTOR’S NOTES �� Alexandra Campion �� This year’s DP production started with a simple idea, the myths and stories cultures tell about how the world began, as well as the wish to make a pledge towards creating more theatre that deals with the climate crisis and tackles sustainability on stage. Every culture has its own story, or creation myth to explain the world we live in and how it all began - but what would happen if these creation myths were only the start of the story? What if we told the next part - how did we get to the way the world is now? How might our current world eventually be destroyed, as told by the myths we already know? Are there stories we can tell and pass down to warn future societies about what we did wrong and make sure they do better? What if our cultural creation stories became the story of an exodus of these cultures, peoples and civilisation as we know it? Perhaps, somewhat ironically, the idea for Exodus �� was born. During the devising process we were particularly drawn to the Chinese creation myth of Pan Gu and the idea of how balance was created from chaos, exploring and devising around the idea of what Pangu would do to the world he had created if he could see it now? Equally we played and drew on the First Nations creation story of Turtle Island, inspired by its deep connection between Skywoman and the animals who helped her to create, live and flourish in balance with nature on the turtle’s back. Would those same animals take back their well-wishes and efforts to help if they could see what humans had done to that balance now?

After seeing the ideas for the set design, from Mr Carl Mok, we were all drawn into the space you see in front of you now, the bunker. Originally designed to be the backdrop, not the centre of the action, Mr Mok had given us the gift of inspiration. Who lived in this bunker, why did they live there and how did they survive, or not, alongside each other? And so myth and bunker combined is what we give you today. Cultures making sense of how the world started and us trying to make sense of how we got here. Originally our devising was dark and pessimistic, in the context of today’s regular news and human conflict around the world, the state of humanity seems hopeless at times, let alone the climate crisis that will impact current generations more than those before us. However, we soon realised during the devising process that we aren’t quite done with humanity yet, we still think there is hope. Our hope, in this moment, is that the production can allow you to reflect and question your part in society and how we can all make a small change to the world around us. What can we still learn from these creation myths? Are there lessons to be learned from the idea of creating balance out of chaos and can we still get back there?

Allison Chen has been deeply captivated by the world of theatre and found her true sense of belonging on stage at a very young age. As her passion for theatre continued to grow, she looked for opportunities to engage in theatre and actively took part in various ISF academy productions such as My Fair Lady and Hairspray. Additionally, she is also very enthusiastic about dancing and honed her skills as a performer by taking part in numerous dance showcases over the past years. Allison, now an HL IBDP theatre student, is beyond excited to delve further into the world of performing arts and is thrilled to showcase her passion alongside the NIGHTSHADE theatre company.

Chloe has loved theatre ever since she was a little girl. Starting from a young age, she has been enthusiastic about singing and acting. Her passion and dedication led her to be a regular at the Academy Production (My Fair Lady, Hairspray, Bugsy Malone), and finally this year, a performer in NIGHTSHADE Theatre Company, EXODUS. Embarking on her theater journey as an IBDP HL Theatre Student, Chloe is beyond thrilled to further her studies in the mysterious world of performing arts. Chloe is honoured to join NIGHTSHADE Theatre Company, to persue her passion in the ISF IBDP Production, EXODUS.

Irma Sung's lifelong passion for arts and theatre ignited during her first school production, Just So. Since then, she has dedicated herself to theatre, participating in numerous concerts and productions. Her most memorable experience was the Academy Production My Fair Lady, where she honed her skills alongside her peers. Irma, an SL IBDP Theatre student, eagerly looks forward to amplifying her passion and developing her performing skills alongside the NIGHTSHADE Theatre Company.

Jingyan has cultivated a rich background in theater, vocal work, and music throughout her life. From a young age, she received training in stage speaking, and she has dedicated several years to pursuing musical theater. Joining NIGHTSHADE Theatre Company, she aspires to integrate naturalism and devising techniques into her experience. Jingyan is particularly excited about her role as a critical theater producer, collaborating with fellow passionate theater students to engage audiences in thoughtful reflection on our contemporary society.

Jodie Lee possesses a lifelong, ardent love of the performing arts. She has been fortunate to amass ample performance experience in music and dance throughout her journey. However, her passion for theatre has thrived within the confines of her studies, an aspect she is keen to expand upon. Embarking on the IBDP as an HL Theatre student, Jodie is eager to witness NIGHTSHADE’s synergy towards creating captivating and impactful theatre.

Larry attended two years of MYP Theatre, but he never really liked it at the beginning. His initial experience with theatre involved watching renowned musicals such as "Hamilton" and "Wicked," but he found himself disconnected and bored during these performances. However, after joining the NIGHTSHADE Theatre Company, it was during improvisation exercises in class that he truly felt inspired to actively participate and express his imagination. Now, as an IBDP HL theatre student, he is eagerly looking forward to exploring more of the performing arts and enhancing his theatrical skills.
