Throughout the year, we pore over hundreds of submissions on tools, materials and other innovative solutions for the decorative surfacing industry. Since I’m rather new to all this, it has been an eye-opening experience as I am continually impressed by the specifications and advancements in products and processes that support fabricators and their teams — with the end consumer in mind, of course.
The technological developments in workflow systems and fabrication processes are truly incredible, from Moraware’s CounterGo software that can help you streamline the sales process and increase profitability, to tooling by experts like BACA Systems, Breton and Park Industries that increase efficiency and accuracy. In every corner of the industry, there are manufacturers and suppliers that are always looking to improve the way we do business, and that’s inspiring.
Further, I’m learning everyone seems to have a keen eye on the horizon — the future of innovation and the path to a product that breaks down barriers and sets the standard. It’s not just about color and texture and face value, but it’s about a deeper commitment to create products that are meaningful on a larger scale.
We’re seeing a lot of manufacturers draw inspiration from the environment: mineral surfaces that mimic the smooth and crystalline shimmer of new fallen snow or deep veining that draws from a golden sunset or an inky night sky. They’re not just pretty words; these descriptors leave a lasting impression. We should all be reminded of the beauty that surrounds us in nature and preserve it in any way we can, even if it starts from a point of brilliance in our physical surroundings. Today’s consumer has never been more mindful of the environment, and our architects, designers and fabricators are dedicated to helping them incorporate these ideals into their spaces.
Many are taking it a step beyond, embracing sustainability in new product development. We’re seeing growth in recycled materials from brands like Durat, Lapitec, Crossville and IceStone, just to name a few. Nearly all manufacturers are focused on sustainable practices and doing what they can to preserve resources — no step too small. Whether it’s low VOC adhesives, closed-loop water recycling operations from Beckart Environmental and Water Treatment Solutions, or digital templating software from Laser Products Industries, a solution that cuts down on template material usage and even carbon emissions by minimizing the need for heavy transport of physical templates — all of these are steps toward a cleaner environment.
And still at the forefront of life today — considering the pandemic is still upon us — is safety and our ability to create healthy environments in homes and public spaces. We’re seeing an elevation in the advantages of solid surface and other materials that are not only stain resistant and easy to maintain, but also include nonporous properties that won’t support bacterial growth. Corian Design, Laminam, Meganite, Staron and Wilsonart are just some examples of manufacturers that provide products that support healthy lifestyles.
Our annual Buyers’ Guide is meant to help our readers find manufacturers and suppliers of the latest and greatest products relevant to the decorative surfacing industry. ISFA and Countertops & Architectural Surfaces magazine are committed to keeping industry professionals up to speed on cutting-edge advancements, design trends and business strategies to help our members and our readers make educated decisions.
I’d like to thank everyone who has championed this edition, whether you’re an advertiser or a contributor. In reading and researching the industry’s landscape, it has become clear that we’re all nurturing and nudging each other toward a better future. As members of ISFA and supporters of fabricators all over the world, it’s clear you are making a lasting impression by curating the direction of the industry. I look forward to reading about — and sharing — your next great achievements.

“We are once again seeing a majority of our clients choose solid surfaces for their kitchen and bathroom projects.”
After 50 years of new home construction and renovation, Welling Construction, Inc. has seen just about everything when it comes to kitchen and bathroom trends. Although some trends are gone forever (think avocado green kitchens and carpeted bathrooms), there is one that is making a welcome comeback.
“When we first started in the early ’70s, laminate was the trend in bathroom vanities and kitchen countertops,” said Sean Welling, thirdgeneration owner of Welling Construction, Inc. In the ’90s, that trend shifted to solid surface, which reigned in popularity until the early 2000s when granite became the countertop material of choice. Today, said Sean, that trend is shifting back to solid surface. “We are once again seeing a majority of our clients choose solid surfaces for their kitchen and bathroom projects.”
Why the comeback? Sean believes it comes
down to options. “In the ’90s, if you had a solid surface countertop, you were limited to standard patterns,” he said. “Today, there are a lot more options, including natural colors that look really sharp.”
Brian Smith, director of sales and owner at L.E. Smith, says those options are continually increasing. “There is a strong range of colors and patterns to choose from,” he said. “Neutral colors that mimic natural stone are the most popular, but Wilsonart continues to come out with new options that are matching current trends in colors and styles.”
Like many other manufacturers, Wilsonart recently introduced new solid surface designs that look like marble and other natural stones, and Sean says it is unlike anything he has ever seen. “I have already had a client order one of the designs that were just released,” he added. “As long as they continue creating new colors that match current trends, I am sure solid surface will continue to be popular.”
In addition to offering a wide variety of colors and styles, solid surface bathroom vanities and kitchen countertops offer an upgrade from laminate without the sticker shock that accompanies quartz or granite options. “A lot of our clients don’t want to spend the money on quartz or granite countertops,” said Sean, “When they see the options available in solid surface, they can easily imagine it in their spa-style bathroom or upgraded kitchen. There is also a sense of relief when they realize that they can also fit it in their budget.”
If you are interested in learning more about L.E. Smith’s residential solid surface program visit www.lesmith.com.
To see the new collections by Wilsonart visit www.wilsonart.com/solid-surfaces.
■ Price point: Perfectly priced between laminate and quartz, solid surface is a great option to fit any budget.
■ Limitless design: Ranging from trendy to natural and everything in between, solid surface comes in a wide range of colors and design options.
■ Low maintenance: Nonporous properties mean that solid surface countertops never need to be sealed, they won’t stain, and they’re easy to clean.
■ Antimicrobial: Solid surface will not support the growth of bacteria, which makes it invaluable in health care settings like hospitals, doctor’s offices, gyms, hospices and retirement homes— not to mention kitchens and bathrooms.
■ Seamless appearance: Seams are sealed so tightly, they are almost invisible, which allows for clean lines and no place for bacteria to grow.
■ Durable: Although difficult to damage, solid surface can be easily repaired.

While we’re seeing many manufacturers expand their lines to include vibrant colors, swirling blues and inky blacks with flecks of metallic gold, one color still reigns supreme: white.
“Patterns come and go, gray comes and goes, but white is a perennial favorite,” says Liz Margles, vice president of marketing for Caesarstone.
But don’t feel limited. “The fun thing about white is that no two are the same,” argues Margles. “We probably have a dozen different whites, and we play around with different textures, honed polishes, rough finishes, fool around with some marbling.” There’s a shade of white for everybody and every application, she says.
For example, within Caesarstone’s Whitelight

collection, you can find three shades of sand compose Adamina’s earthy complexion, translating the beautiful serenity of the desert into a soft neutral that gently reflects light and brings tenderness into a room. Calacatta Maximus is Caesarstone’s quartz take on a “bossy marble” look. To round out the collection of whites/ neutrals with existing surfaces are Empira White, White Attica, Vivid White and Statuario Maximus, which complete the collection of eight colors in total.
MSI’s luxurious Carrara Breve, pictured below, and Calacatta Lavasa are the perfect addition to architectural design styles in residential or commercial applications. Carrara Breve’s warm

white background and short gold and brown veins will captivate, while Calacatta Lavasa’s warm white background with short brown veins intermingled with long diagonal veins will awe with its modern appeal.
“We are excited to announce the new addition of Quartz to our popular Q Collection” Senior Vice President, Product Sam Kim said. “Both Carrara Breve and Calacatta Lavasa are rich inclusions for the expansion of our collection which provide a modern appeal that designers will enjoy.”
Silestone by Cosentino recently launched Sunlit Days, the first carbon-neutral collection in the quartz surfaces and engineered stone industry. The hybrid formula is made using recycled water from the production process, renewable electric energy and 20% recycled material. Faro White, pictured here, represents the white of the Mediterranean and its sun-drenched walls, symbolizing purity, simplicity and serenity.
You can’t go wrong with white, but with so many terrific options on the market today, choosing the perfect white for your application will certainly be a challenge. C

Surface Bonder Zero is the latest seaming adhesive from Integra Adhesives. Using fabricator feedback, they developed it specifically for hard surfaces like natural stone, sintered materials and quartz. Its unique formula allows for better penetration and mechanical bond strength on natural materials, while also providing superior chemical bonds to man-made materials like sintered and quartz surfaces. Tests resulted in a tensile bond strength of upward of 4000 PSI for these surfaces, with a substrate failure rather than cohesive failure.
Surface Bonder Zero is also a low sag adhesive, which allows the adhesive to be used easily on 45 degree angles for miters, as well as 90-degree vertical faces for applications like deck seams or wall panels. Surface Bonder Zero is currently available in nearly 100 stock colors, which were specifically chosen to match the highest-selling surfaces in the stone, sintered, and quartz industries. For more information, visit www.integra-adhesives.com/surface-bonder-zero/.

The award-winning No Lift Install System is a revolutionary device that is transforming the way 3 cm granite and quartz counters are installed. The benefit to the installer is that the cart does the injury-inducing lifts and rotations that shorten an installer’s career. Additionally, it eliminates the common practice of sending extra staff to help put heavy and awkward counters in place. The cart lifts the counters to cabinet height using a remote control, battery-powered actuator. The counters are rotated safely into the horizontal position with the pivoting support frame. This frame has “transfer balls” that enable the counter to be easily slid onto the cabinet. Labor-saving cranes, clamps and vacuum lifters have been available to fabricators for inside the shop for decades, and now, with the No Lift Install System, the same help is available for installers. Learn more at www.noliftsystem.com.

RouterBitsNow.com’s mission statement is simple: to make the fabricator’s job easier. They offer three different bit drafts for sink finish shaping. For best results, select the correct bit angle, or draft, for whichever sink you are choosing to finish route. Most sinks can be finish routed with the 10-degree or 15-degree bits. There are a few sinks where the 20-degree bit will work best. Determine this by taking the draft of the sink and add 5 degrees. For example, if a sink is 5 degrees, then the 10-degree bit will work best. If a sink is 13 degrees, then the next best bit would be a 20-degree bit. If you had only a 15-degree bit, then the reduced bearing (.975 inch) would be a trick in a pinch. All bits come standard with a Delrin soft angle matched .995-inch bearing and will save time and money! Visit www.routerbitsnow.com for a full list of products and additional information.
