Sofia is a Mexican-American sophomore who writes about anything and everything. When she's not focused on school and writing, she loves to spend time with her friends and family, shopping, and going out to eat.
Spring is one of the beloved seasons that people look forward to all year long. Not cold, not scalding, making it the perfect time to travel and explore the world Flowers bloom, days get longer, and cold drinks make you feel refreshed Many people see spring break as a great time to recharge and escape problems, whether it's exploring a city, going hiking, or sitting by the beach all day. There are so many options to choose from, yet Mexico is one of the most popular countries to visit, and people can't get enough of it! It has beautiful coastlines, rich culture, fun activities, amazing foods, and a lively atmosphere. So here are three incredible places in Mexico you should consider visiting for an unforgettable spring break
Puerto Vallarta
When people think of the beaches in Mexico, they tend to think of popular places like Cancun or Cabo, but one of the best beach destinations to visit (that isn't as crowded as those places) is actually Puerto Vallarta. It's a mid-sized coastal city in the state of Jalisco with a population of approximately 479,000 residents. Compared to Mexico, it's small, representing less than 0 4% of the country's total population, and it is significantly smaller than larger cities like Mexico City. Even though it's a small city, there's still so much to do! It has amazing beaches, a vibrant culture, and is still very much connected to nature. One must-do activity in Puerto Vallarta is visiting the botanical garden, just 30 minutes from downtown. During the spring season, when the plants have just bloomed, and the temperature is perfect, they start to sweat so much; it's just perfect You walk around some of the most beautiful and exotic plants, with over 1,000 different species of plants, in a relaxing and stunning atmosphere. It was ranked in the top 10 botanical gardens in North America. The Palo Maria Waterfall is another must-see in Puerto Vallarta. To
Get to the waterfall; you have to take a scenic 30minute hike, and every minute of it is worth it. You will arrive at a crystal-clear waterfall formed by the Palo Maria River and the various pools formed at its base, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip But remember, you can’t go to Puerto Vallarta without spending a whole day at the beach. It's known to have stunning beaches, with the two most popular being Playa de Los Muertos and Playa de Los Camarones Playa de Los Muertos (beach of the dead) is near the city center, and its sandy shores are a vibrant hub of activity. You can walk along its shore, taking in the lively atmosphere while passing by both locals and tourists. Restaurants line the beach, serving amazing seafood While it can become crowded on weekends, Playa de Los Muertos' central location makes it a convenient spot to spend a day soaking up the sun and enjoying the beauty of Banderas Bay. Playa de Los Camarones (shrimp beach) is a more laid-back, authentic neighborhood in the south It's more affordable than the other beaches, as you'll find more local vendors and small, family-owned restaurants. During the springtime, there are also many festivals Semana Santa (Easter) is a very important time of the year, and Mexico is a Christian country They have weekend-long festivals on the beach to celebrate the life of Christ. There's also the Festival Madonnari, where the main city center plaza turns into a big canvas for artists to draw and create masterpieces on the pavement
San Miguel de Allende
One of my personal favorite places I've ever been to is San Miguel de Allende Walking down Aldama Street, with every building a different color and music playing as you stroll through the streets. It's located in the state of Guanajuato and is about 274 km from Mexico City In 2008, it became a UNESCO heritage site as the birthplace of the Mexican Revolution. The city center consists of 24 blocks of narrow streets, alleys, and paths, with no traffic lights. As you walk through the streets, you can see art galleries, souvenir shops, and old and new boutiques by Mexican businesses One of the reasons people love to visit San Miguel de Allende is that the buildings are different colors and look exceptionally beautiful. The buildings were painted these colors during the Spanish colonial era, when the government made regulations for them to be painted bold autumnal hues The mix of the orange and blue churches and the yellow walls of Centro Ignacio Ramírez is just stunning. La Parroquía is a big Neo-Gothic church. People adore the pink spires and turrets that cast an intricate popular experience in San Miguel de Allende while visiting the markets. The markets there are very lively and filled with stalls of handmade goods, fresh produce, traditional Mexican food, clothes, and more It's the perfect place for tourists to get a taste and vibe of Mexican culture You get to explore, try new things, and find one-of-a-kind items you won't find anywhere else in the world. La Aurora Cultural Center for Art and Design is an amazing place if you want to find unique souvenirs from Mexico It used to be a textile factory and now houses canvases, sculptures, and handcrafted products by local artists from San Miguel de Allende. The main plaza, called El Jardín (the Garden), is the heart of San Miguel de Allende and is always full of life Tourists and locals gather there to relax, listen to live music, and watch street performers, day and night Surrounded by beautiful buildings and the energy of the people, it's the perfect place to sit, take in the moment, and experience the city's culture. Another mustvisit place in this beautiful city is El Mirador It's the main viewpoint in the city Here, you can see the entire city center, making it one of the best views around. You can get there by taking a taxi or by walking uphill and exploring the city. At the top, t
here are benches and small vendors where you can relax, enjoy the view, and take pictures of the beautiful scenery
Tulum
Tulum is known to be one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Mexico. It's famous for its turquoise water, white sand beaches, and ancient Mayan ruins One of the best experiences in Tulum is visiting Dos Ojos It's a very popular underwater cave system made up of connected cenotes. Dos Ojos (two eyes) got its name from the two main sinkholes that resemble openings to the underwater world The water is clear, and for the most part, it's warm there People love to swim, snorkel, and dive in the cave Going to Dos Ojos allows you to see a different side of Mexico and is very relaxing. Another must-visit place is Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Mexico It's an ancient Mayan city that attracts millions of tourists a year and has over 20 different structures, mostly pyramids, that people love to sightsee. There are also the Temple of the Warriors, the Observatory, and the Great Ball Court, which are landmarks in Mexico related to Mayan culture Lastly, Tulum is best known for its beautiful white sand beaches. Tulum's beaches are regarded as some of the best in the world. The sand has a bright and clean look, which makes the turquoise water stand out even more The sand is very soft and clean, making Tulum one of the best getaway destinations in Mexico. It is perfect for relaxing, swimming, and enjoying natural beauty.
OFF-WHITE:LUXURIOUSSTREETWEAR
By ROMA ANTHONY ’27
Roma is a junior who is interested in the fashion industry through her passion for arts. During her free time, she enjoys making new memories with her friends and traveling to different cities.
Born in Illinois, 1980, Virgil Abloh was a polymath, having been an artist, architect, engineer, creative director, artistic director, industrial designer, fashion designer, musician, DJ and philanthropist In 2013, he founded the luxury-streetwear brand Off-White, viewing it as a place for experimentation. Through the brand's image, Abloh combined aspects of luxury clothing with streetwear, using his experiences and expertise from other fields including architecture and music His vision and aim for the brand was to make it accessible to a wide, global audience, centering the designs around seasonal clothing collections which frequently articulated present cultural visions and interests Off-white initially started as a brand which expressed creativity
Abloh described it as “the gray area between black and white,”
symbolising how the brand’s concept and image is primarily built off of the combination of varying/opposing fashion styles.
The brand presented originality through its image, showing the fashion industry something new and innovative based solely off of preexisting styles and materials. Aside from developing and founding this unique brand vision, Off-white became known based on the 3% ideology that Abloh employed. This ideology/rule is derived from the main idea of redefining the definition of creativity in the modern fashion industry, aiming to change the perspective on how innovative fashion is perceived internationally. The rule is simple, it argues that changing something by 3% can/will transform the entire meaning Abloh used this within the fashion industry to initiate Off-white He focused on creating looks and pieces from preexisting trends, popular materials, and overall styles as a form of inspiration.
The philosophy behind the rule is that progress emerges from refining what already exists rather than developing completely new, original ideas. In order to redefine the meaning of creativity, the ideology emphasizes that the future of creativity isn’t necessarily about which designers or inventors do something first, but instead focused on who does it uniquely, differently; that’s what guarantees success and interest from the public
By using this ideology, Abloh was able to debut seemingly new and transformative ideas that were centrally derived from the signature elements of clothing styles, highlighting features from luxurious and streetwear aesthetics In this day and age, every fashion brand is inevitably trying to get ahead of the game, but in this process, each one begins to neglect their initiative and originality; contradicting the ideology/oblivious to the ideology Considering modern fashion trends, once one pattern or item of clothing becomes remotely popular it seems as if every brand is making it in varying colors and materials, causing each one to become a clone of one another. Similarly to many other brands today, Off-white utilizes the success of celebrities and influencers to increase their marketing and interaction However, due to this epidemic of conformity which is largely influenced by social media trends, Off-white as a brand stands out, focusing on the brand's initial objective while developing unique designs
Through Off-white’s vision of experimentation, the brand has become responsible for popularizing the concept of an emerging style called “streetwear couture,"
including streetwear inspired items while using luxurious quality materials and techniques. As social media popularizes more fashion trends, brands often face criticism surrounding the negative view on brands implementing evolving concepts. The entire concept of Off-white juxtaposes this idea that brands have to have a niche established and maintain it throughout as the brand continuously varies depending on current affairs within the industry However, rather than simply copying the trending designs, it focuses on taking aspects from previously successful styles that correlate with the trends and merging them into new clothing items
Off-white has established a new style which combines to previously successful styles (luxury, streetwear), introducing unique perspectives of the definitions of creativity along with redefinition of signature features to a brand Social media influence will only continue to rise with unique ideas illustrated through fashion often becoming trends within the industry where major corporations piggy-back off the ideas in order to conform to the ever changing fashion trends
Through his brand, Virgil Abloh has established a new approach to creativity within the fashion industry, encouraging future generations to focus on developing uniqueness and originality rather than conforming to the current popular styles by taking inspiration from previous inventions and adapting them

Of course, Coachella 2026 was as successful as it has been every single year! Internet sensations, after internet sensation all gathered in Palm Springs California for the Festival of the year! For those who don’t know, Coachella is a music festival that was first held on October 9-10 1999 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California where it still takes place today. It has now grown into a three day event across two weekends It features famous solo artists and bands with emphasis on the big headliners
This year Coachella was nicknamed Bieberchella, after its most famous headliner Justin Bieber. The attendance was estimated at a shocking 750,000 visitors, marking it as a record-setting, sold-out event stoplighting artists likeJustin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G. You can always spot celebrities and influencers in attendance, most of them flown out by brand sponsorships
The sponsorships at Coachella are the main reason for its popularity. Weekend one of Coachella has become a center on experiential marketing, highvalue content creation, and influencer partnerships, with a trend towards "utility over novelty" to drive engagement Brands invest tens of thousands of dollars in influencers and events, all with the goal of being the most eye-catching brand at Coachella. They see the whole festival as an ongoing creator partnership
But many believe the influence of social media has ruined the festival all in itself. Critics say that the festival has become a "corporate getaway" or "Instagram factory" where attendees and influencers focus more on social media content than the performances Ticket prices and logistical costs are often labeled extortionate, with the event increasingly catering to wealthy influencers and celebrities while offering a lackluster experience for general admission attendees Critics also highlight long lines, poor crowd control, and the ecological impact of the massive desert event.
Long-time attendees and reporters have described the atmosphere as downgrading to the festival with the "worst energy", and being "unwell," with the main focus being on vanity over enjoying the music
Coachella has earned itself a complex reputation, but it still manages to capture the attention of millions worldwide For many it’s a bucket list event, for others not so much So the real question is would you ever attend?

Coachella is an event that happens every year between the end of April and the start of May. Each year, many singers perform on this stage, which is known worldwide as one of the most iconic music festivals Although Coachella mainly revolves around music, it also has a major influence on the fashion world. Like many largescale events, it becomes a space where style evolves and trends are born Fashion at Coachella is bold, experimental, and sometimes even unpredictable It’s a time to play with identity and push boundaries, where people fully embrace the freedom of self-expression in the desert setting. Accessories often take center stage, transforming even the simplest outfits into statement looks Many of these outfits are worn only once, making the festival feel like a runway of fleeting creativity. The kingdom of Boho Chic is what Coachella can be seen as. Where fringes, crochet fabrics, flowing silhouettes, and earthy tones dominate the scene Coachella became a place where people put on the craziest outfits, both on stage and off. Talking about the on stage outfit, one of the best outfits was from Sabrina Carpenter, who during the two weekends threw some of the best fits at the event Dressed by Dior from head to toe, her custom made outfits really made the difference on that main stage. She started her performance wearing a red coat that then, when taken off, revealed a sequin red mini dress. As said before, at these events, singers also go all out in outfits; in fact Sabrina Carpenter wore a lot of shimmery and sparkling clothes that stood out and made a difference.
The most important event of the weekend was Justin Bieber's comeback, which influenced the audience not only emotionally, but also by talking about fashion. One of the hoodies he wore, in one day, became the most researched fashion piece on the internet; that is how powerful his fashion taste and performance were
Not following Sabrina Carpenter's custom made pieces, Justin Bieber decided to wear items accessible to all, as they are part of ongoing collections His Lowe pants and his hoodie was one of Coachella’s most iconic outfits, as was his performance. The hoodie Justin Bieber wore was a piece of his very own collection; the brand named Skyler sold out of his hoodie in one day, due to the performance and the love for Justin Bieber This demonstrates the impact such an event can have, not only on the music, as it is a musical event, but on topics that surround it, such as fashion.
Beyond celebrity looks, Coachella is also deeply shaped by the crowd itself Festival audiences are just as influential in defining the event’s fashion identity. At Coachella, this is done, for example, by blending vintage pieces, thrifted finds, and fast fashion to create highly personal outfits For instance, it’s common to see people pairing classic Levi’s denim shorts with crochet tops, cowboy boots, and oversized sunglasses, creating that effortless Boho-esert aesthetic that Coachella looks for Others take a more experimental approach, wearing metallic twopiece sets, sheer fabrics, or even futuristic, raveinspired outfits with neon colors and bold cutouts. Accessories play a huge role too, layered jewelry, body chains, bandanas, and statement belts can completely transform a simple look into something eye-catching At Coachella the audience can really play dress up, and decide who they want to be at that event, but no matter who they choose to be, they all make an impact
Lastly, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have amplified the importance of this event and its fashion, turning everyday attendees into trendsetters almost instantly. A single outfit posted online can go viral within hours due to the popularity of the event For instance, in recent years, trends like mesh dresses worn over bikinis, chunky boots paired with flowy skirts, or the comeback of Y2K-inspired pieces, such as low-rise pants and tinted sunglasses, have all had a comeback due to Coachella's influence on the fashion world. Influencers and micro-creators often document their “outfit of the day” (OOTD), tagging brands and sharing styling details, which allows followers to recreate or reinterpret those looks, engaging not only with the brand, but also with the people, encouraging the fashion world’s economy. In that sense, Coachella is no longer just a physical space for fashion, but also a digital one, where trends are created, shared, and spread globally in real time

I thought I knew exactly what to expect when I got on my flight to Boston for Easter break. In my head, it was going to feel like something straight out of a movie: perfect campuses, effortlessly cool students, and a kind of polished, cliché version of university life in America. That was not really the case. Boston was way more chaotic, busy, and real than I expected but also way more fun
From the second I got there, my sister was already in the middle of a million things at once. Classes, meetings, plans, people emailing her nonstop and somehow she still managed to drag me along to everything and make sure I was never bored
We visited campuses like Harvard and MIT, which honestly did look like what you’d expect super nice buildings, people studying everywhere, and a very “academic aesthetic”. But the actual lifestyle? Completely different. It’s not just quiet studying and looking smart all the time It’s more like running from one thing to another and somehow
One day, I went to study with her at the famous Computer Science and Engineering Building, what my sister says people like to call the “Jenga building”. I must say, the view from up there was actually insane - I didn’t really get anything done since I was too busy looking outside
We also went out a lot, I met her friends, and just explored the city. I didn’t expect her friends to matter that much to my experience, but they actually did Everyone was really easy to talk to, and it didn’t feel awkward like I thought it might The most random (and honestly funniest) part of the trip was the gala. The event was themed around The Great Gatsby, and it was my first experience attending something of that nature My sister helped organise it through her university club, so I ended up helping set things up before it even started, which made me feel way more involved.
Also, I was extremely jet-lagged the entire time Europe is six hours ahead, which left my body completely disoriented By the time the gala commenced, I should have technically been asleep; however, I found myself engaging in conversation with others as if everything were perfectly normal
Once it actually started, it felt like a completely different atmosphere—music, people dressed up, everyone just doing their own thing. At one point there were guys fully locked into a poker game like they were in a movie, while I was just going around talking to people
Another highlight was going to a Boston Red Sox game The atmosphere was completely different from everything else loud, packed, and very into the game even if you don’t fully understand what’s going on. It felt just like one of those classic “You’re In America” moments, when the crowd started booing at the Michigan State team (since it was a home game for us)
Overall, the biggest difference between expectation and reality was that nothing is as puttogether as it looks from the outside… and that’s kind of the best part It’s busy, messy, and unpredictable, but that’s actually what makes it fun.
But the funniest part was how people kept thinking I was actually a university student. People kept coming up to me asking what year I was in and what I was majoring in, and every time I just started laughing because I’m literally in 9th grade! Even better, people kept mixing me up with my sister. I got tapped on the shoulder multiple times with “Weronika?” and people genuinely thought we were twins We are very much not she’s 21 and I’m six years younger, but I guess in that setting it made sense.
Then there was the after-party, which was less formal and honestly just as fun. It was one of those things where nothing crazy happens, but it’s still a really good time
And yeah, my sister was basically managing all of this while also making sure I had something to do every second, which is kind of insane when you think about it
So Boston wasn’t what I expected it was definitely better.

Overnight oats have been around for a while, but have had a recent spark in popularity When you make porridge (oatmeal) you are basically cooking the oats so that they are soft and pleasant to eat. With overnight oats you are leaving them in liquid, in the fridge overnight which achieves very similar results to heating them If I am being honest, every time that I make porridge I end up with a pan stained with burnt oats at the bottom, which if you put them in a jar overnight you don’t have to worry about it. They can also be super nutritious, the oats fill you up and you get protein from the milk and yogurt I personally don’t like the flavor of cow's milk so I tend to use almond milk. In a pinch you can also use water as the liquid. After you have tried the recipe you can also change the amount of liquid depending on the texture that you like your oats
You can find endless different flavours of overnight oats. From carrot cake, to berries, to bananas
Have fun experimenting and seeing what works. Something to be mindful of is texture. Depending on what you add in, things can become a bit stodgy For example adding a lot of watery carrots to make carrot cake overnight oats If you find this you can also add in some chopped nuts to add some contrast and crunch. You can also adjust the liquid level in a recipe. These things are important to think about before starting
I recently found a recipe for chocolate, banana, and peanut butter overnight oats. It was a nice change and I was surprised at how much the flavours complemented each other. I was thinking about developing a recipe for it but I also found there were a lot of different flavours for early in the morning. And I think it is better to stick to simple familiar flavours for those early mornings.
The recipe that I have decided to share with you is my favorite overnight oat recipe and that is chocolate and banana. The natural sweetness of the banana helps complement the bitterness of the cocoa. It is super simple to put together. I like having some of the banana mashed and some of it chopped Feel free to switch that up Feel free to put it on top and/or mix it in The amazing thing about overnight oats is you don’t have to worry about ratios or rising. You can do whatever you want and get creative. Enjoy!
ChocolateandBanana OvernightOats
Method:
1. Combine the mashed banana with the yogurt and almond milk.
2. Add the oats, cocoa and a pinch of salt.
3. Fill two jars with the mixture and top with the chopped banana.
4. Leave in the fridge overnight and enjoy in the morning with a drizzle of honey and some berries if you wish.

Did you know that Mary Tudor was the first Queen of England (Lady Jane Grey’s reign was too short and she was not of royal blood so her rule is not usually counted) to overpower a king? Mary Tudor is otherwise known as “Bloody Mary,” for her persecution of protestants, but when comparing to other rulers in history she is a fair, powerful, independent woman and the only reason she is considered “bloody” is because she is a woman, acting like any other king, and they were scared.
Mary Tudor loved her mother deeply, so the divorce between Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon left her with depression and melancholy. She'd often go weeks without eating because of the traumarelated nausea she suffered from, trying to stay loyal to her mother and disprove any rumors or confrontations saying that she was being disobedient and disloyal to her father. It was a difficult balance, especially since her mental health was suffering severely. In 1553, Henry VIII, under Anne Boleyn's influence, banned Lady Mary from seeing her mother (Katherine of Aragon) to prove that Anne held power over her. Elizabeth I and Mary Tudor's relationship was complicated: They were 17 years apart, and religion only pushed them apart further Mary was a devoted Catholic but her half sister Elizabeth was born a Protestant, and ever since infancy Elizabeth had Mary as her ladyin-waiting. However, Edward looked up to Mary like an aunt and it is to believe that they were very close but that changed drastically when Edward became king at age 9
Even though her brother was a 9-year old child, he was a powerful dictator and a forgotten king. Upon defining Edward’s religious measures, Mary suffered a great deal of pressure Sometimes her brother would even imprison the people who lived with her.
Edward knew he was wasting away, so to ensure the lineage was kept pure he cut off both of his sisters from the throne, as he thought that they had half blood and the distantly related Lady Jane Grey was to be queen after him On July 6, 1553, at 8:00pm, the final words Edward said were, “I am faint, Lord have mercy upon me, and take my spirit.” Death was Edward’s fate, and microbacterium tuberculosis was the murderer. After his death, Lady Jane Grey pleaded and begged that she was not the rightful heir and she could not possibly be queen, but eventually reconciled to the fact that it was was what the late King Edward wanted. Months before the tragic death of Edward, Mary had fled to east Anglia due to plans by higher level class members to overthrow her She was worried they'd imprison her. She lied, saying that she needed to move because her doctor was dying of sickness. She made her way to Norfolk, where she visited the residence of Lady Borough, Euston Hall. There she was delivered the news of her brother's death but the way it was bought to her was by a goldsmith She was sceptical, so she waited until the "tragic" news was confirmed officially, and after she took action writing to the Royal Council, demanding her throne and their allegiance, gathering mobs who were extremely loyal proclaiming herself Queen of East Anglia. Then, the fight truly began. The Royal Fleet was sent by Edward, the Fifths Council surrounded the shores of East Anglia, London secured the Tower of London, and troops were being gathered preparing for Mary Tudor’s supporters Meanwhile, the dedication of Mary's supporters was so moving that Cornwallis and his comrades switched sides. Then Mary quickly stationed her guards to Framlingham Castle, a symbol of power to show they were serious The next move was to claim Queen of Norwich
The dedicated mob of Mary's supporters were ready to die for her Even the most important families were fighting for her right to the throne. No one was loyal as Mary's supporters were to her. Henry Jerningham managed to convince the guarding fleets on the shore to fight for her
This all happened in 13 days. Being called indefensible; more people submitted to Mary. On the 19th of July 1553 lady Jane Grey had been overthrown and Mary was now Queen: the battle was over
Mary Tudor got her infamous nickname, “The Bloody Queen of England,” from burning almost 300 protestants at the stake for refusal to turn Catholic This was really bad, considering she didn't show mercy even to children Put into perspective of her father who killed 70,000 people, for much stranger reasons other than religion (which if you look throughout history isn't even an uncommon thing to be killed for) Mary's wedding day was perhaps one of the happiest days of her life, despite being 38 and considered too old to be wed. Even before the wedding, Mary Tudor (after exchanging letters) was head over heels for king Philip of Spain But, sadly, Philip did not share the same devotion Mary soon became pregnant, she and her court were overjoyed at the thought of a Catholic heir. On the 30th of April people were led to believe that her son was born. There were huge celebrations in his honor but they were only rumors Weeks had past Mary's due date and her abdomen was deflating, returning back to normal Philip was absent a lot after that. Meanwhile, Mary had another false pregnancy. Recently scientists believe the reason she could never have a child is because of ovarian cancer
Mary died at age 42 while Philip was on a trip on November 6th 1558. It is said that she probably died from the same cancer that prevented her from giving birth.
Mary lived through heartbreak, loss and several miscarriages Against all odds, she became queen by rallying support from Wast Anglia. She killed and destroyed anyone standing in her path. She was one of history's first looks at an independent strong powerful woman and it was like nothing anybody had seen before It is such a shame what people have made her out to be: a crazed merciless fearless ruler with no heart but she really should be a role model who is looked up to with respect and admiration She longed for a child and a happy family but that was not her reward; her reward was fear from men who wanted to keep women beneath them.

Haastrup v King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (2018)
A devastating legal strife between parents and doctors has revived a controversial debate across the United Kingdom over who should be given the authority to make life-and-death decisions regarding children. In Haastrup v King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (2018), the Supreme Court was challenged to resolve an extremely emotional dispute between a family’s hope and medical professionals’ analysis of the child's physical condition
This case is centered around Isaiah Haastrap, an infant who endured severe brain damage shortly after his birth due to various complications that deprived him of oxygen Since the time of birth, doctors noted that his health status was profoundly insufficient for an infant of his age. Medical professionals at King’s College Hospital concluded that Isaiah had sustained permanent neurological damage and was highly unlikely to recover his consciousness or proceed with any substantial recovery. Consequently, doctors decided that progressing with life-sustaining treatment, specifically mechanical ventilation, would not assist in improving his being, but would rather prolong his suffering
Despite this, Isaiah’s parents immensely opposed this verdict. Similar to many other families in analogous circumstances, his parents held onto the hope that their son would possibly display signs of improvement if he was given more time They claimed that by taking away treatment, it would eternally terminate his life and deprive him of any possibility, no matter how small, of recovery
Their stance mirrored a deeply rooted human response: the refusal to give up on a deeply loved one when encountered with uncertainty The hospital’s medical staff was unable to be resolved, as the hospital was concerned about his suffering as there was no foreseeable improvement on his condition, while the parents were still holding out hope for their infant So, the hospital went to the Supreme Court for authorization to withdraw life support. By doing so, it brought the case into a legal arena, in which judges were challenged with responding to an exceptionally difficult question: who concludes what is in the “best interest” of an adolescent when those related to the child inherently disagree?
In its verdict, the Supreme Court allied with the hospital, emphasising that the child’s best interests must be the superior deliberation in such disputes Even though the judges exhibited sympathy for his parents and did recognise the emotional heaviness of their position, they highlighted that rulings need to be based on objective medical evidence and not hope alone The Supreme Court established that the medical analysis that continuing treatment would be futile and burdensome, working solely to prolong Isaiah’s suffering without the possibility of providing any realistic prospects of recovery.
Importantly, the verdict maintained a key rule in UK medical law: even though parents have substantial rights and responsibilities in regards to their children, these rights are not guaranteed. When conflicts come about, it is solely the courts that are required to intervene to guarantee that the child’s well-being is superior above all else In Haastrup v King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the judges concluded that by maintaining lifesustaining medical treatment would not be in the best interests for Isaiah’s welfare, thus approving its withdrawal The verdict has ignited a national debate of the balance between parental dominion and medical professionals. Those who are in support of this ruling claim that doctors, acting on clinical evidence and professional ethics, are superior in assessing whether the treatment is either beneficial or harmful They emphasised that sustaining life at all costs is not always the most merciful decision, especially if there “is no hope for recovery.” Contrary to this, critics argue the concern of the limit to which parental wishes can be vetoed by the state For a substantial number of people, the concept that courts have the superiority to decide a child’s fate raises questions about autonomy, family & child rights, and the purpose of the government in family matters Some have argued that the parents, who have known and loved their child most adequately, should have greater power in deciding how their child is taken care of.
Conclusively, Haastrup v King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust serves as a daunting reminder of the boundaries of medicine and law. It demonstrates the extreme tension between hope and reality, and the matter of making final decisions in situations where all options carry intense consequences As not only the UK, but the world, continues to attempt to cope with these problems, situations similar to this case guarantee that the debate between medical ethics, parental & child rights, and the job of courts continues to be urgent and deeply human

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again ”
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela, born in 1918, was the first Black president of the Republic of South Africa. The path to this achievement was extremely difficult, but Mandela dedicated his life to obtaining rights for Black South Africans He spent 27 years in prison, yet he never stopped fighting for equality.
For his efforts and dedication, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and, following the collapse of Apartheid, became the country’s first Black president in 1994
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in the southeast of South Africa in 1918. He achieved great success in his studies and became a highly educated man Mandela studied law at the University of Fort Hare, where his passion for justice began to emerge.
In 1939 Mandela left the university, and refused to marry the woman that was chosen for him by his family He moved to Johannesburg where he continued his studies, becoming a lawyer in 1942.
In 1944 Mandela entered the African National Congress, becoming the leader of its Youth League, an organization that fought for the freedom of Black South Africans
In 1948 the system known as Apartheid officially came into effect.
Initially, Mandela was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and his peaceful protests , believing that violence was not the right path. However, the South African government viewed him as a threat, and in 1956 he was arrested.
In 1961, after being acquitted, Mandela decided to abandon peaceful methods in favor of armed resistance, helping to form a new armed group. He later fled to Algeria to avoid arrest, but, when he returned in 1962, he was captured and imprisoned in a high-security prison on Robben Island
In 1990, the South African government finally released Mandela, and in 1994 the country established universal suffrage, allowing Black citizens to vote
This was a major achievement for Mandela, who then ran for president and, with great success, became the first Black president of South Africa.
Nelson Mandela’s life teaches us the importance of perseverance, dedication, and equality. Even after decades in prison, he continued to fight for justice and worked to unite his deeply divided country. Mandela reminds us that real change requires courage, patience, and determination

Valentina is a Chinese-Australian-Italian who loves creative writing and is interested in Literature and History In her free time she loves journaling, listening to music, and watching movies.
Travelling all the way to South America for my Easter break was something I never would have expected to happen at such an early age in my life It truly was one of the best gifts to be so fortunate in having the opportunity to travel all the way to Rio and spend a couple days in the beautiful city Walking around the city, being exposed to the warmth of the sun, and enjoying a coconut on the beautiful beach of Copacabana really gave me the chance to escape reality for a time, being able to take a minute and enjoy the holidays.
The adventure continued with one plane ride to Manaus, two boats, and a bus trip to the Amazon.
Floating across the Meeting of the Waters (Encontro das Águas ), where the dark black water met the sandy-pirana infested waters, we finally arrived at our cabana in Careiro.
Entering the forest, surpassing all the mangroves that lay beneath the water, initially I was excited yet a little nervous with the fear of returning home with yellow fever, a painful bite, an aching sting, or alternative injuries I could take back home with me. Making sure to remain cautious with mosquito repellent and having to wear long sleeves each evening and during our hikes within the forests, it was all worth it. Despite the creepy creatures we found within our cabana, whether it was the twenty cockroaches I found on my bed, the huge spider we found on the walls of our room, the giant cockroach that flew onto my head at four o’clock in the morning, the frog that jumped out of the toilet, or the bullet ants crawling outside my doorstep, it was all an experience that I will forever remember as part of the adventures of the Amazon.
In the early mornings we would wake up and take the canoe out to watch the Amazon Forest wake up: with the toucans that flew across the horizon, spider monkeys and howler monkeys jumping from tree to tree, the dolphins appearing for their morning swim, and the beautiful sounds to start of a perfect morning
At night, the red eyes of the caimans appeared with a splash as our canoe approached the mangroves. Anacondas down beneath the water, the unknown was lurking below.
Each day as we hiked through the forest with our long sleeves in the high heat, our tour guide, Fortunado, taught us survival skills on how to survive in the depths of the forest.
In the devil’s gardens, the lemon ants roamed as we learned that they are a tool of survival to cure headaches and migraines. Learning the significance of banana leaves and how strong they are to be used for the construction of houses, they are a sustainable substitute for the materials we are used to The bloodwood trees whose bark prevents wounds from bleeding out, and whose leaves are used to support humans to climb the trees and forage for açaí. All these skills I learned made me realise the true value of Mother Nature and how we must respect all that she does for our world as we find the answers for everything within the beauty of nature. Fortunado left us with a saying: “If we respect Mother Nature, she will respect us.”
One day, we visited an island and got the pleasure to meet an indigenous community. A family, who invited us into their home, taught us the ways of their survival. Playing with their four year old son and eleven year old boy out in the rain, as we played a game of football, it made me realise the true value of happiness and how people appreciate the little things and how happiness does not require wealth or unnecessary consumption of materials and possessions in order to be happy. Although these young boys do not go to school and learn the subjects and materials that we are familiar with, they have the opportunity to live on their families land and to truly learn the value of supporting one's family with the skills they learn to survive in the rainforest I observed that they have absolutely no fear, a huge and caring heart, and an intelligence so valuable that they know the secrets of Mother Nature. Overall, the lessons I learned from this adventure made me understand on another level the importance of respecting Mother Nature and how crucial it is to conserve the beauty and the kindness she has to offer to our planet
MOVIE REVIEW: ARRIVAL
By ESME ALONGI ‘27
Esme is a junior who writes about a variety of progressive and linguistic subjects. Outside of the publication, she enjoys crochet and figurative ceramics.
Released in 2016 and directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival was adapted from the 1998 novella “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang Villeneuve is a FrenchCanadian film director whose name is behind many very popular and even highly critically acclaimed sci-fi films, such as Bladerunner 2049 and the Dune trilogy (Bauer) Generally, he is known for producing high quality, emotionally rich films “Story of Your Life” is much too similar to Arrival for me to explain its plot and spoil the movie, but it should be mentioned that Chiang is a science fiction author who has received an impressive amount of recognition for his writing. So, we know going into this movie that it’s going to be of a very high caliber.
Without giving everything away, Arrival centers around Dr Louise Banks, a linguistics professor She goes about her normal, if solitary, life until aliens touch down on Earth for the first time
She, alongside others, is given special access to interact with the aliens to understand their motivations on Earth
As a linguist, her job is to establish some form of communication between the two parties In doing so, she must understand their language, composed of complex, inky circles (as seen in the movie poster) before a war breaks out between nations for fear of alien threat But the process of learning this alien language is changing her and she needs to figure out how to use this newfound knowledge before it’s too late.
Now, I love this movie. It is one of my favorites of all time, and an engaging watch from start to finish. The themes it explores are interesting in and of themselves (loss, communication, love), but the way the movie explores them is itself novel and nuanced. Its subtle but genuine optimism is always refreshing, especially in our world today. The twist is truly amazing, and the movie leaves you happy just because of how excellent it is. If you’re looking for a new sci-fi movie, an interesting exploration into language, or just an engaging, good watch, I would highly recommend Arrival

This week one of Disney's most beloved films came out with a sequel which had everybody buzzing. The Devil Wears Prada 2!
The
Devil Wears Prada is often known for its Iconic outfits and glamorous fashion world, but the film is much more than stylish visuals.
The Devil Wears Prada is a popular film series set in the fast paced fashion industry of Fashion Journalism, following the journey of Andy Sachs, a young woman who obtained a position working for a prestigious Runway Magazine The movie, while being remembered for its stylish outfits and glamorous setting, also shows us how the fashion world is much more than that. Through its characters and setting, the film highlights the creativity, hard work, effort and attention to detail behind the industry, revealing fashion is not just about appearances but also about expression and identity.
In this sequel, the storyline continues to build on the fast paced fashion world with the same classic characters like Andy, Miranda Priestly and Nigel but also some new faces: Amari and Charlie as Miranda's new first and second assistants The plot is engaging and easy to follow, with a good balance between drama and light hearted scenes, keeping it entertaining throughout.
Overall, I found the film really enjoyable, with a storyline that kept me engaged and interested..
Not only were the plot and characters very well thought out, the fashion feels even more elevated and central to the film's atmosphere, with every scene carefully styled to reflect the characters’ evolution and style The outfits are more elegant and intentional, showing each character has developed since the origin of the film. At the same time, the film leans into the excitement of the fashion world and its limitless opportunities: from high profile events such as Milan Fashion Week, to behind the scenes moments where the designers and journalists are working to put everything together. All combined to make it feel both glamorous and fast paced. This creates a more immersive experience, where fashion is not just a superficial part of the background, but a key element of the story
To sum it up, The Devil Wears Prada 2 successfully builds on the storyline of the previous film without feeling too repetitive, yet still incorporates new elements and characters and an interesting plot It manages to be both entertaining and also visually pleasing. The film also shows that fashion is not only about style but also about creativity and ambition Overall, it is an enjoyable sequel that definitely lives up to the expectations of the original

Téa is a Croatian-American junior with a passion for history and photography. She enjoys spending time with her family and her dog.
As the seasons change, mornings feel different. Instead of waking up to a dark cold morning, sunlight peaks through the window shades with a soft warm hue The days stretch longer, and spring settles into that perfect middle ground, where the sun rests lightly on your skin and a subtle breeze rustles the tree’s leaves. It feels like something is shifting, not just outside, but within us too.
This change in mood is not just imagined
A lot of people notice a feeling of increased motivation and optimism, and part of this comes down to biology: increased sunlight boosts the brain’s production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked to an individual’s mood and well-being.
At the same time, the changes in daylight can also have a challenging effect on an individual. Longer days can disrupt sleep, as melatonin drops and it becomes harder to fully wind down at night. As a consequence, this can cause higher cortisol levels, the body’s main stress hormone, which may leave some people feeling anxious or on edge In addition, the body’s internal clock (its circadian rhythm) has to adjust to the new schedule of light and dark. During this period of recalibration, people might experience fatigue, mood swings, or changes in appetite (Oak)
For some, these effects are much stronger. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can vary by season (often linked to Winter), but is also common in Spring People may experience low energy, difficulty concentrating, or changes in sleep as their body struggles to adapt to the seasonal change.
However, this is why it's recommended to stick to a routine to improve sleep, prioritize getting sunlight by spending time outside doing activities you love, whether that be running, walking, or yoga (“The Science Behind Seasonal Mood Changes: How Your Brain Responds to the Seasons”)
Even with these challenges, spring still stands out.
There is a sense that everything is moving forward, routines feel more manageable, and summer feels like it’s just around the corner.
Maybe that’s why so many people prefer this time of year. Although it’s not perfect, it does feel like a reset, and sometimes, that’s enough to change our mood entirely.
