Director's Opening "Thank you to each and every member of our community from the board members to the gatekeepers for helping ISD to finish the year much stronger than it started."
Tom McLean
Dear Students, Congratulations on completing a rollercoaster of a year at ISD! With all of the fresh memories of sports day, family day, international day, and football at the British International School Budapest, field trips, and much more, it is hard to believe that we spent so much of the year wearing masks on a visitor free campus. The PYP exhibition and the end of year transition ceremonies provided a fitting conclusion to what has been a momentous year at ISD. Grade five students demonstrated that they are ready for the MYP, Preschool students showed us that they are ready for the PYP, and the Lower School proved that they are ready to be officially IB authorized. Thank you to each and every member of our community from the board members to the gatekeepers for helping ISD to finish the year much stronger than it started. I wish all of our departing community the best of luck and hope to see you again soon. To those remaining at ISD, enjoy the summer vacation and come back energized for another eventful and rewarding year at ISD! Happy holidays! Tom McLean

Annamária Kálmán
Dear ISD Community, What an exciting year this was! ....with a wealth of activities, exciting projects and events to celebrate and reflect upon, and great memories to treasure. We have encountered many challenges and have overcome them successfully. For me, personally, the greatest achievement of this academic year has been obtaining the IB PYP authorization. It fills me with great happiness to know that our students are the ones to complete the PYP programme from the first PYP-authorized school in Hungary. All this would not have been possible without the continuous support of dedication that we have received from our stakeholders at ISD: students, parents, teachers, and Board Members. Thank you for all the hard work that went into making this happen. I am incredibly proud of our students and faculty. Together, we have learned much and shared experiences that will remain in our hearts for years to come. It's wonderful to see how our students are becoming principled, caring, and open-minded young individuals. The passion and strength within our community make our school truly a special place for our students. Sincerely, Annamária Kálmán

Events
An Academic Year at the ISD 2021-2022 The school's PA program was launched, with lots of activities and workshops, and school life got underway.
August 2021
September
The academic year opening ceremony happened, where our school’s new teachers, and students shared their expectations towards the upcoming year.
October
The first Student Council organized event took place, which was connected with the commemoration of the 1956 revolution of Hungary.
November
After-school activities started, during which all students could choose between the media club, Spanish, German language, and various sports such as fencing or karate.
December
The Hello Winter celebration and showcase of the artworks, and musical performances of the students was the first time in almost two years, that the parents could join, and enjoy the happenings live, in contact.
At the PYP, the annual Market day put students in the spotlight, allowing them to show off what they have learned in maths over the years, gain insights into the world of business and have fun.
January marked the end of term 1, the report cards were distributed. Therefore, the next semester started, with renewed enthusiasm from both teachers and students.
January
During this period, STUCO launched the first school assembly process, during which MYP students were able to participate in a complex series of four interactive presentations.
February
The Farsang (also known as Carnival) celebration happened in February, where students were able to participate in fun events, such as dancing, or donuteating contest.
March
The end of the year marks the end of one of the ISD's most successful years, which also marks the beginning of a welldeserved break. The school's summer camps run in five sessions, spanning almost the entire summer. Our students will also promote our school at the Campus Festival in Debrecen, which is a great new experience for us.
April
May&June 2022
The whole school took part in the wonderful Hello Spring event, which not only introduced us to the magic of spring, but also to the tricks of a magician, which was enjoyed by everyone. In the second part of the event, the PYP hunted for hidden chocolate eggs, while the MYP played an interesting board game competition
Revolution Day October 22
The revolution day was a sports day where the houses, Tiger, Snow Leopard, Fox and Phoenix competed against each other. Throughout the day, the houses were able to score points by cheering as loud as they could for their house and the other houses. There were a variety of activities to take part in: Football matches Window painting Ping-pong Tug of war Talent show Each house received some kind of prize. The trophies were given to the houses that won the sports competition. The 'main' trophy, the biggest trophy, was finally won by the Snow Leopards, which is on display in Mr. Lorand's room.
Halloween November 5
The beginning of November contained a great day organized by the Parent Association. They planned fun activities where the classes had to go around the school completing different activities. Based on how good you did you earned points. At the end of the day, one of the parents announced the winner. After the rotating activities, we had a raffle where students could win chocolates and other prizes. All the costumes were very fun and creative. We had witches, ghosts, and my favorite a stormtrooper and other costumes.
Winter Fundraiser December 12
The Parents Association and the Student Council worked efficiently with the ISD staff members and with the teachers to support those in need. This cohesion has led to the achievement of a goal unprecedented in the school's history, which our director indicated,“...a personal example of the educational power of charity. The number of parcels donated is practically the same as the number of people who study and teach at the school every day.” But how did all this fundraising get started? The school learned that the "shoebox" campaign was taking place in Debrecen again this year and that several schools had been taking part for years. Once the parents knew about it, it was clear that our school, which has been a participant for the second year now, would collect even more parcels this year. And so we did, with more than 160 parcels making Christmas brighter for an incredible number of children and families in need. The PA President said that there will be more presents under the Christmas tree next year and that the school will definitely participate in the following period as well.
The Christmas celebrations organized by the Student Council included a special Christmas fundraiser fair, the entire proceeds of which, more than 60,000HUF, will go to help those in need. In the shoeboxes, not only toys could be donated, but also, based on a previous request from the Debrecen Charity Board, (Debreceni Karitatív Testület) cleansing products, various shower gels, deodorants, and hygiene tools were provided. These items will help to make the children's everyday life more healthy and hopefully will give them the confidence to overcome everyday challenges and difficulties.
It is through charitable acts such as these that ISD hopes to build its foundation of spirit and giving to those in need. We truly hope to become a school community for others.
Farsang
February 11 February includes a very important event for all Hungarians, which is Farsang. Farsang is really about saying goodbye to winter, as February marks the end of the cold days. STUCO asked students to come up with the best activities and in the end, they produced 5 fun ones: Costume contest Dance with a professional dance instructor Karaoke Donut eating contest ("the best thing of all) Just Dance Another
event
that
was
organized
was
the
Valentine's Box. It was present all day in the MYP cafeteria. STUCO, considering that after this day there was a one-week break, decided to combine Valentine's day with the Carnival. All the events were interesting and fun for both MYP and PYP students. They had the theme of ‘Carnivals Around the World’. It reinforced the students and developed their global thinking skills as they thought about people from other parts of the world and gave an introduction on the specific event after researching their cultures.
Sports Day May 12
A day for sports and friendship Sports Day in the ISD is an incredibly enjoyable and fun day for everyone in the school. It is one of those yearly events at our school that fully connects students from PYP to MYP and teaches them to think as a group. This year was the first time that sportsmanship was explicitly emphasized by the organizers while also placing a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of our school. But what is the purpose of the school on these special days? Well, quite a lot, but we asked the head of the Student Council what he thought about it, to which he replied, "a day like this allows us to learn about team spirit and the idea of fair play, while fun and enjoyment are emphasized." He added that a proven learning method in our school is discoverybased learning, which is close to the "learning by playing" method. These involve thinking globally and experiencing things first-hand.
The day started with a meeting of the houses, during which everyone had the opportunity to practice and have a good conversation, where we could learn about the playful activities that were planned for that day. Sportsmanship was also introduced here when we discussed how to win and what to do if you lose. This was followed by Mr. Tom's speech on the football field and an introduction by Alice Wu Le, Vice President of the Student Council, followed by the house chants that have become part of all our events. "The morning events were a lot of fun," said one MYP student. The good vibes continued throughout the day as parents started to arrive and even entered some of the competitions. At the end of the day, STUCO and the Media Club worked hard to make the closing ceremony perfect. Of course, the Media Club captured everything and put together an end-of-day Slideshow which was a huge hit.
Family day May 28
At the end of May, our school held a family day, a day full of fun and of course picnic. There were lots of activities to try, ball games, an obstacle course, 2 bouncy castles with slides for the little ones, and great music all day. Everyone brought something delicious to eat, and that great food was accompanied by great drinks, lemonade, and juices. During the day we had the opportunity to watch a karate demonstration. The KIYOSUMI SE
Debrecen
Traditional
Kyokushin
Karate
Dojo gave a fantastic demonstration. The karate demonstration was followed by dinner. The goulash soup was prepared by a professional chef. After dinner, the activities continued. You could create during the day. Together we made a "poster" of the day, which can be seen in the MYP lobby. The family picnic lasted around 7pm and we had a great time.
Football Day May 27
On 27 May, our school took part in its firstever football tournament with both a team from the PYP and MYP. ISD played against two well-known British international schools, both located in Budapest. Our school team was
excited
to
see
what
would
happen
during the day. Friday morning came. All players present, Tshirts will be distributed. Mr. Béla Makra, who works in our school’s office as a Facility Specialist and brings a wealth of experience to the PYP team, is with us. Everyone speaks highly of the challenge ahead. Our school principal, Mr. Tom McLean, shows up at nine o'clock in the morning. At first, it wasn't clear if he was just arriving for the team meeting or accompanying the teams for the day.
Both
claims
are
true,
as,
after
a
motivational meeting, the exhilarated team set off with the Director, Mr. Tom McLean, Mr. Tamás Botrágyi, Christopher Suprenant, and Mr. Béla Makra, the media club crew, and of course the MYP and PYP teams.
Both of our teams broke records in the history of ISD, the PYP team even won a match against the BBIS in a ratio of 8:0.
At the end of the day the MYP team took the field, the score was tied until halftime when our new goalkeeper Robert had a save that failed and was kicked in the goal by the opposing team captain. Later on, we are in position, the ball is thrown in by Dominik, handled by Dénes, and finally gets stuck in one of the backs. All the boys fought very well. Mr. Tom McLean evaluated after the final results: “We are not a team, yet, but we can become one. You (PYP and MYP teams) all did absolutely great, really, really great. To lose, I think we lost four goals each half, but I think, that’s not such a big deal, we just did not have the same strength of dept as they had. I was not got anywhere near as much to think that. I know it is tough losing, but honestly, I am so proud of the way you behave, the type of fight, and really we had chances to be able to score goals but also win the game. It wasn’t easy for them. So you should be proud of yourself. I’m delighted. It’s a starting point and it's fantastic. So, congratulations.” We would also like to congratulate all participants. It was an enlightening experience.
Shakespeare Literary Museum project in Grade 9 On 10 June 2022, the 9th grade presented their amazing Hungarian Literature projects based on the drama of Shakespeare, Hamlet the Prince of Denmark. They all had to write an abstract and a short essay on different topics, while create an exhibition space to display information about the topic.

A Milestone for the Grade 5 Students: The PYP Exhibition
Grade 5 students between 26-27 May presented their exhibition project, the main theme of which was the UN's Global Sustainability Goals and within that, they could choose any theme of their preference. This year, they picked the following topics: the importance of bees, paper recycling, saving trees, water purification, saving red pandas, pet welfare, plastic in the oceans, solar panels, and solar energy. The students worked on their projects for 8 weeks and their hard work paid off. Starting with their musical journey the fifth graders gave an excellent performance even though everybody was a little intimidated by the audience, but with amazing bravery they let their stage presence fill the auditorium while performing the infamous Pink song, Cover me in sunshine. "It always seems impossible until It's done." Nelson Mandela
PYPx
On the first day of the PYP exhibition, the audience got to know more about the topic of pet welfare. Villő and Sofie gave them a very organized presentation about how we can take care of our lovely friends, and pets. Not only that but they talked about their burning passion for animals while sharing their shelter journey. The cruel hardships in an unwanted animal's life were the most vigorous drive in their unique research project. The next station's presenters were Akhmad and Geri, who have done extremely profound scientific research covering the area of solar energy. It was a new experience for all the viewers when they talked so intelligently about solar energy. Akhmad explained why it is more remunerative than using fossil powers for a long period of time. Geri was very determined to open the knowledge of all in harnessing solar energy in the most efficient way. Dorka showed an incredible presentation on bees. Noone would even think how important bees are to the whole world. Not only for honey but without them the world’s botany wouldn’t exist. She was very enthusiastic about the act of apiculture which was really fascinating to see. Not to mention her fabulous artwork which was done with only her graphite pencil! Next was Francis’ station who talked about the nation’s not-so-good paper recycling habit. He offered great ideas on how the school should handle paper recycling in the future.
PYPx
Manda and Borka have made their research project around clean water. It was really interesting to see how water gets cleaned by machines on their table and what is the difference between clean and unclean water. The most shocking thing that they discovered throughout their research journey was how many countries do not get access to clean water. Bende has presented his passion for animals by taking the audience on an imaginative trip around the world to get to know these gorgeous endangered animals. He shared some shocking facts about these animals. For example, there are less than fifty polar bears in the northern arctic. He would like to continue working on this topic in a very unique way. He wants to pursue his dream career and become a zookeeper later in the future. One of the last exhibitions was about plastic pollution in water by Joshua. His main inquiry was how ocean habitats are impacted by plastic pollution. It was very well designed and inspired by marine biology. The last exhibition was made by Nico about trees. As humans, we still don’t talk about trees enough although it’s a relevant topic in the mainstream media. Trees are giving out the most oxygen and taking away carbon dioxide. He showed how important forests are. As Nico’s center idea states, "Forests require protection for future generations of humans, animals, and plants."
Primary Years Program Accreditation
Since the inception of ISD, one of the most important goals for all stakeholders involved has been the accreditation as an IB co ntinuum world school. This involves offering three of the core pr ograms: PYP, MYP, and the DP. Though this is still a work in prog ress, one which ISD’s MYP/DP coordinator has been working on diligently to advance, the news announced last month, that ISD i s now an accreditation PYP school, brings us one step closer to this goal. Last month the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) a warded the ISD Primary Years Program (PYP) accreditation as an IB world school member. This is a proud moment for ISD as the school community becomes the first accredited PYP school in H ungary and joins a handful of other schools throughout the regi on. According to Mr. Tom McLean, ISD’s Director, “The institution is n ow a member of the growing global IB community. The IB system is now used by more than 5,000 schools and helps students in interna tionally close to graduation in nearly 150 countries worldwide. The IB accreditation process is rigorous, wellstructured, and based on international best practice. IB World Scho ol status is a recognized indicator of educational excellence worldw ide. IB schools can attract the most qualified and internationally ex perienced teachers from all over the world.”
