Welcome from the dean

I

am delighted to be writing my first letter for Intersections magazine! Having just finished my

second month as dean of the iSchool, I could not have asked for a warmer welcome from our

community. I am looking forward to collaborating and working with all the different iSchool stakeholders as we plan our path to the future in the days, months, and years ahead.

We are in an exciting phase of growth, and I am one of many new faces in our School. We have experienced a banner year in faculty and staff recruitment, which has resulted in the hiring of terrific new people who joined the iSchool in the summer or fall, including tenured/tenuretrack faculty members Jessie Chin, Jingrui He, Yun Huang, Halil Kilicoglu, Sara Schwebel, and Yang Wang; specialized faculty members Inkyung Choi, Sharon Comstock, and David Hopping; and staff members William Emery, Melissa Newell, Ben Schaap, Ruth Shasteen, Emily Volk, and Kelly Watt.

Many critical iSchool areas are represented in our current faculty hiring plan and goals. These include cyberinfrastructure, data curation, data visualization, digital humanities, explainable AI, history of libraries and the information professions (endowed position), information and society, preservation, and technical services (endowed position), and technical pedagogy.

In other news, we are in the process of recruiting the first class of undergraduates in our BS in Information Sciences program. This is a particularly exciting time because, as our School’s first bachelor’s degree, the BS/IS provides the opportunity to educate undergraduates on the foundations of information sciences, including interdisciplinary approaches that incorporate societal impact and an understanding of technological implications. Our faculty and staff have been focused on establishing key processes for the degree, including course development, recruitment, advising, and building appropriate student services.

With new faculty, staff, and students, additional space is needed so that we can maintain and build our School’s unique identity and culture. The University is working with us to determine possibilities for such expansion within a reasonable timeframe. This is yet another critical component in our growth.

Without a doubt, as our School continues to expand, this is going to be a very busy year!

Introducing our new dean, Eunice E. Santos

E

unice E. Santos was appointed dean of the iSchool, effective August 16. She previously served as the Ron Hochsprung Endowed Chair and Professor, and department chair of computer science, at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

Santos is an accomplished scholar and researcher whose expertise includes computational social science, with an appreciation for the social and human aspects of the information sciences. Her recent research focuses on using computationally intensive methods to understand the behavior of social networks and communities.

She has received numerous awards, including a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching, IEEE-CS Technical Achievement Award, Robinson Faculty Award, and IEEE Big Data Security Woman of Achievement Award. Santos was named to Crain’s Tech 50 in 2016 and 2018. In 2012, she was elected as

a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Santos will continue the School’s excellence in educating information professionals and advancing the broad application of in-

formation and technology in science, liberal arts, society, and other sectors. Her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion will reinforce the values of librarianship that serve as the iSchool’s foundation.

Santos appointed to Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Board Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has appointed Dean Eunice E. Santos to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Board of Directors, pending confirmation by the Illinois Senate.

Dedicated to telling the story of America’s sixteenth president, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts, and art as well as approximately 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history. The museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects, and innovative storytelling techniques to educate visitors.

Schwebel assumes leadership of CCB

H

istorian and children’s literature scholar Sara L. Schwebel is the new director of The Center for Children’s Books (CCB) and professor of information sciences, effective August 16. She comes to Illinois from the University of South Carolina, where she served as professor of English and women’s & gender studies.

Schwebel’s research areas include children’s and young adult literature, history/social studies pedagogy, public history, and digital humanities. She is interested in exploring the way narratives of and about the past are presented in texts for youth and in helping teachers use children’s literature to deepen critical approach to history.

She is the author of Child-Sized History: Fictions of the Past in U.S. Classrooms (Vanderbilt UP, 2011); editor of Island of the Blue Dolphins: The Complete Reader’s Edition (University of California Press, 2016); editor of The Lone Woman and Last Indians Digital

Archive; and co-editor with Jocelyn Van Tuyl of Dust off the Gold Medal: Rediscovering Children’s Literature at the Newbery Centennial (Routledge, forthcoming). Her Island of the Blue Dolphins project is the recipient of the Organization of American Historians’ Stanton-Horton Award (2019) and the American Studies Association’s Garfinkel Prize in Digital Humanities, Honorable Mention (2017).

Schwebel is co-founder and chair of the Carolina Children’s Literature Consortium. Her experience includes service as co-chair of the 2014 Children’s Literature Association’s annual conference and as a member of the Children’s Literature Association Board of Directors. She holds a BA in history from Yale College and a PhD in the history of American civilization from Harvard University.

“The Center for Children’s Books has been a leader in bridging the divide between the Ivory tower and community for more than half a century,” Schwebel said. “I look forward

to building on its historic strength as a center of expertise on children’s books even as we expand outward to become an incubator for innovative research on children's literature, media, and information behavior, broadly conceived.”

Although stepping down from directorship of the CCB, Deborah Stevenson will continue her service as editor of The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books and member of the iSchool faculty.

Yun Huang Assistant Professor Huang’s research interests include humancomputer interaction, social computing, mobile computing, computer supported cooperative work, and crowdsourcing.

Halil Kilicoglu, Associate Professor Kilicoglu’s research interests include biomedical informatics, natural language processing, computational semantics, literature-based knowledge discovery, scholarly communication, science of science, and scientific reproducibility.

Yang Wang, Associate Professor Wang’s research interests include usable privacy/security, data-driven privacy/ security, inclusive design, explainable AI, human-computer interaction, social computing, ubiquitous computing, and computer supported cooperative work.

Knox named 2019-2020 Centennial Scholar

A

ssociate Professor and BS/IS Program Director Emily Knox has been named the iSchool’s Centennial Scholar for 2019-2020. Endowed by alumni and friends of the School, the Centennial Scholar award recognizes outstanding accomplishments and/or professional promise in the field of library and information science.

Knox’s research interests include information access, intellectual freedom and censorship, information ethics, information policy, and the intersection of print culture and reading practices. She is especially concerned with how people justify censorship, where censorship takes place and who is responsible, and how information professionals respond to censorship.

“My research analyzes individual and institutional responses to information that they find objectionable or upsetting and informs both practical information ethics and the development of policy for information provision in libraries and other information institutions,” said Knox. “I provide

Knox’s books include Book Banning in 21st Century America (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015); Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan on a Shoestring (ALA Neal-Schuman, 2010); Trigger Warnings: History, Theory, Context (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017); and Foundations of Information Ethics (ALA NealSchuman, 2019), which she co-edited with John T. F. Burgess. Her work has been published in journals such as Library & Information Science Research, Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy, and Library Quarterly.

Her most recent article, “Silencing Stories: Challenges to Diverse Books,” was published in International Journal of Information, Diversity & Inclusion.

At the iSchool, Knox teaches Intellectual Freedom and Censorship; Social Aspects of Information Technology; Information

Organization and Access; Information Ethics; and Libraries, Information, and Society. She has also taught Information Policy and Reference and Information Services. In 2018 she was selected to provide leadership for the School’s new BS in Information Sciences (BS/IS) degree.

Knox is president of the Board of Trustees of the Freedom to Read Foundation, a nonprofit legal and educational organization affiliated with the American Library Association; a director on the board of the Association for Information Science & Technology; and the vice president/president-elect of Beta Phi Mu, the international honor society for library and information studies.

Knox received her PhD from the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University and her MS from the iSchool at Illinois. She also holds a BA in religious studies from Smith College and an AM in the same field from The University of Chicago Divinity School.

Bashir promoted to associate professor

M

asooda Bashir has been promoted to the position of associate professor. Her research focus lies at the interface of information technology, human psychology, and society.

She holds appointments in the Information Trust Institute, Coordinated Science Laboratory, Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering, and Beckman Institute, and she serves as the director of Social Sciences in Engineering Research in the Grainger College of Engineering. At the iSchool, she teaches courses in privacy in the internet age, information assurance, ethics of cybersecurity, and digital forensics.

Before coming to Illinois, Bashir worked for several years as a systems analyst, technical trainer, manager, and global manager for a number of corporations in Silicon Valley, including Lotus and IBM. She earned a PhD in psychology from Purdue University.

Chan selected as a Data & Society Faculty Fellow

Selma Richardson passes away

P

A

ssociate Professor Anita Say Chan has been selected as a 2019-2020 Data & Society Faculty Fellow. Data & Society is a nonprofit research institute focused on the social and cultural issues arising from automation and data-centric technology. Its programs connect researchers and practitioners to bring new perspectives and intellectual breadth to the institute’s work.

Fellows come from a variety of disciplines, have a track record of engaging in research at the intersection of technology and society, and are committed to working in highly interdisciplinary environments. As a 2019-2020 Fellow, Chan will advance research on civic technoscience and decolonial, feminist data collectives in Latin America that work to reconfigure dominant Western economic and cultural frameworks around big data via the fostering of local sites of intersectional and interdisciplinary data dialogues.

“The varied crises currently facing Western data institutions—public and private— have given new urgency to deepening analyses of other forms of data practice, processing, and stewardship beyond the given centers of data expertise,” Chan explained.

“Whether it’s growing concerns around algorithmic discrimination, disinformation campaigning, or the negative impacts of growth of news deserts in regions around the world, it is clear that big data has come

to a kind of political reckoning with diverse publics around the world.”

At Illinois Chan’s research and teaching interests include globalization and digital cultures, innovation networks and the “periphery,” science and technology studies in global contexts, and hybrid pedagogies in building digital literacies. Her book, Networking Peripheries: Technological Futures and the Myth of Digital Universalism (MIT Press, 2014), addresses the competing imaginaries of global connection and information technologies in network-age Peru.

Chan holds a joint appointment with the College of Media, where she is an associate professor in the Department of Media and Cinema Studies and directs the interdisciplinary Technocultures Lab. She holds a Fiddler Innovation Faculty Fellowship at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and is a faculty affiliate at the Illinois Informatics Institute, Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Center for Global Studies, Department of Anthropology, and Department of Asian American Studies. Chan received her PhD from MIT in the history and anthropology of science and technology studies (STS).

Tilley honored by Comics Studies Society

T

he Comics Studies Society (CSS) honored Associate Professor Carol Tilley by renaming the society’s Travel Award in her honor, recognizing her efforts to support and make visible the contributions of women and non-binary comics scholars. CSS is the first professional association for comics scholars in the United States, open to researchers and teachers “who share the goals of promoting the critical study of comics, improving comics teaching, and engaging in open and ongoing conversations about the comics world.” Tilley served as president of CSS for the 2018-2019 academic year. At the iSchool, Tilley teaches courses in comics reader’s advisory, media literacy, and youth services librarianship. Part of her scholarship focuses on the intersection of young people, comics, and libraries, particularly in the United States during the mid-twentieth century.

rofessor Emerita Selma Richardson passed away on July 10, 2019, in Urbana. An authority on school library media services, Richardson worked in a number of school libraries, including Oak Park and River Forest High School, before joining the University of Illinois in 1974.

For over a decade, she was responsible for multiple editions of the American Library Association publication, Magazines for Children: A Guide for Parents, Teachers, and Librarians. She was also a historical children’s book scholar whose research focused on public library services to children in Illinois. Richardson was an alumna of St. Olaf College, Minnesota, and held advanced degrees, including a PhD, from the University of Michigan.

Pat Mathews (MS ’96), recalls Richardson as one of the most influential people in her life.

“After we moved to Illinois, I began taking some graduate classes at the University of Illinois so I could get re-certified in music education with a goal of doing some substitute teaching. Instead of taking music classes, I chose children’s literature classes, and Selma was my professor. I thoroughly enjoyed her classes, as she was an engaging teacher and a fascinating person. One afternoon I was passing her office, and she called to me to come in for a chat. She asked about my future plans and suggested that I pursue a master’s degree in library science. She basically told me that she thought that I was meant to be a children’s librarian and had what it took to do so. At the time I was a busy wife and mother of four active children and was very involved in church, so it seemed like an impossible idea. It wasn’t. Two years later, I earned my master’s, and later that summer when the new school year began, I was hired as the librarian at Dr. Howard Elementary in Champaign. I was the librarian there for seventeen years and always referred to it as ‘the best job in the school’ because it was.”

An avid and far-reaching traveler, Richardson set foot on all seven continents. She played the flute and sang, and she supported music, education, and the arts in Champaign-Urbana and elsewhere. She belonged to numerous local organizations including the Twin City Garden Club, The Illinois Club, Krannert Art Museum Council, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Marquee Circle, and the University of Illinois Foundation President’s Council. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Champaign.

A

new informatics approach developed

by Associate Professor Catherine Blake and Rebecca Kehm, a post-doctoral fellow at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, will assist physicians and researchers in their systematic review of medical literature. While previous automated methods to identify outcomes have extracted sentences, Blake and Kehm introduce a more precise method that extracts noun phrases rather than the entire sentence.

A sentence can contain more than one outcome and can include both outcome and non-outcome components, which makes using a noun phrase a better option for literature reviews. The researchers use machine learning to automatically detect new outcomes (endpoints) from the methods section of 88K MEDLINE abstracts, and discovered that 96.7% of the outcomes could be represented as a noun phrase. The results also suggest that structural information about how authors communicate outcomes, in particular by using lists, gave better performance than a machine learning approach.

The resulting paper, “Comparing breast cancer treatments using automatically detected surrogate and clinically relevant outcomes entities from text,” was published in the Journal of Biomedical Informatics (Volume 1, March 2019).

From their review of medical literature related to breast cancer treatments, Blake and Kehm found that the most clinically relevant outcome (overall survival) is not the most frequently reported outcome for all treatments; for example, disease-free survival is reported more than overall survival in hormone therapy abstracts.

Blake’s research interests include biomedical informatics, natural language pro-

cessing, evidence-based discovery, learning health systems, socio-technical systems, and data analytics. In addition to her professorial role, she serves the iSchool as associate director of the Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship and as program director of the MS in information management and the MS in bioinformatics. Prior to coming to Illinois, she was a faculty member at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a research scientist, and an applications programmer. Blake holds a PhD and MS in information and computer science from the University of California, Irvine, and an MS and BS in computer science from the University of Wollongong, Australia.

9 Diesner receives funding for crisis informatics research

A

ssociate Professor and PhD Program Director Jana Diesner has received a $200,000 grant from the Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute (CIRI) for her project, “Reliable Extraction of Emergency Response Networks from Text Data and Bench-marking with National Emergency Response Guidelines.” CIRI conducts research and education that enhances the resiliency of the nation’s critical infrastructures.

Diesner’s project builds on her earlier CIRI-funded work, in which her team studied how methods from AI and machine learning can be used for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. In their prior work, Diesner’s team collaborated with the U.S. Coast Guard to study how the selection of commonly used data sources as well as methods and open-source algorithms for text analysis influences our situational awareness or understanding of emergencies and responses. Her team utilizes natural language processing (NLP) methods to help practitioners gain a reliable synthesis of

events and stories from large sets of texts. In the new project, Diesner’s team continues their collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard to assess and combine techniques from NLP and social network analysis to detect and evaluate complex socio-technical networks involved in emergency response efforts.

“This work develops and applies a methodology for comparing policy based on incident management plans to actions based on empirical evidence and can therefore assist in assessing emergency management policy,” Diesner said. “Our work can be used by practitioners to reveal mismatches between policy and practice in a data-driven fashion, which can help to inform policy assessment.”

PhD student Ly Dinh, Informatics PhD student Janina Sarol, and MS/IM student Ming Jiang have been assisting with this research.

Diesner leads the Social Computing Lab at the iSchool. Her lab’s research in humancentered data science and social computing

combines methods from network science, NLP, and machine learning with theories from the social sciences to advance knowledge and discovery about interaction- and information-based systems. Her group brings their basic research into application contexts such as crisis informatics, impact assessment, and bias detection. Diesner received her PhD in Societal Computing from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science.

University funds interdisciplinary game studies project

A

project to support interdisciplinary game studies at the University of Illinois has received funding through the University’s Investment for Growth initiative. Games @ Illinois: Playful Design for Transformative Education will support research and teaching at the dynamic intersection of play, immersive technologies, and interactive design. Participating units include the iSchool, Illinois Informatics Institute, College of Media, and College of Fine and Applied Arts.

According to Judith Pintar, iSchool teaching associate professor and a lead investigator, the project will work toward the collaborative development of interdisciplinary programs in game studies and game design at both the undergraduate and graduate level. At the same time, it will foster an outward-facing game studies community, “Games @ Illinois,” with the goal of becoming a nationally recognized center of interdisciplinary game studies and an influential leader in transformative education. It will also put the University in a strategic position to attract external partnerships in support of these goals.

As Pintar explains, “The faculty members in our game studies community come from all across our campus, with intersecting research and teaching interests that include the development of virtual, augmented and extended reality technologies, the design and evaluation of playful learning environments, and classroom pedagogies, and the study and design of games. We understand ‘games’ most broadly to include interactive media intended for entertainment, education, and social transformation; data-driven simulations for social science and STEM research; and humanities-and-arts-focused interactive narratives, performances, and visual expressions.”

Through the Investment for Growth initiative, eighteen projects from colleges and institutes across campus will receive a total of more than $24 million over a three-year period to benefit institutional excellence, education, and research.

Bonn and colleagues receive IMLS grant for Scholarly Communications Notebook

A

ssociate Professor and MS/LIS Program Director Maria Bonn and colleagues in North Carolina and Kansas have received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (MS LG-36-19-0021-19) to fund their project, Scholarly Communications Notebook (SCN). Co-principal investigators on the project include Will Cross, director of the Copyright & Digital Scholarship Center at North Carolina State University Libraries, and Josh Bolick, scholarly communications librarian at the University of Kansas Libraries.

SCN will be an open educational resource index and repository that will serve as the location for an active, inclusive, empowered community of practice for teaching scholarly communications to emerging librarians.

The project’s investigators have a book forthcoming from ACRL Publications intended to support education and training for scholarly communication librarianship.

SCN will complement this book with examples of more modular and focused content, such as case studies, exercises, videos, and games.

“In our many conversations with friends and colleagues, we’ve been regularly reminded of the limitations of a book, even an openly licensed one, and realized the need for a more inclusive, collaborative hub of open learning content to support and expand instruction in scholcomm topics,” Bonn said. “At first, this content will mostly come from the community of practice, but we hope that over time, LIS faculty and students will start to feed content back into it so that it becomes a rich, collaborative multi-stakeholder community of mutual support and encouragement.”

According to Bonn, several faculty members have agreed to pilot this resource and invite their students to complete coursework that will culminate in contributions centering their own voices and experiences.

The investigators also plan to offer financial support to contributors with an eye to recruiting the stories and experiences of “scholcommies” from a broad range of institutions and intersectional identities, to bring in diverse perspectives.

“We’re really excited about this opportunity to use open pedagogy to build a more

active and inclusive community around teaching and practicing scholarly communication,” Bonn said.

Bonn’s research focuses on understanding the needs of scholars in a contemporary publishing environment; comparing the collaborative practices of scientists and humanists and how they might inform each other; and examining best strategies for libraries to benefit from economies of scale while remaining embedded in local communities.

Prior to joining the iSchool in 2013, Bonn served as associate university librarian for publishing at the University of Michigan Library, where she managed the University of Michigan Press and Scholarly Publishing Office. She also has served as assistant professor of English at institutions both in the United States and abroad. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester, master’s and doctoral degrees in American Literature from SUNY Buffalo, and a master’s in information and library science from the University of Michigan.

iSchool course combines data science and storytelling

C

ollecting and understanding data is important, but equally important is the ability to tell meaningful stories based on data. Students in the iSchool’s Data Science Storytelling course (IS 590DST) learn data visualization as well as storytelling techniques, a combination that will prove valuable to their employers as they enter the workforce.

The course instructors, Associate Professor and Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Kate McDowell and Assistant Professor Matthew Turk, introduced Data Science Storytelling in fall 2017. The course combines McDowell’s research interests in storytelling practices and applications and Turk’s research interests in data analysis and visualization.

Students in the course learn storytelling concepts, narrative theories, and performance techniques as well as how to develop stories in a collaborative workshop style.

They also work with data visualization toolkits, which involves some knowledge of coding.

Ashley Hetrick (MS ’18) took Data Science Storytelling because she wanted “the skills to be able to tell the right story when the time is right for it.” She appreciated the practical approach, which allowed the students to immediately apply the skills they learned, such as developing a story structure and using a pandas DataFrame to support and build a story. Hetrick put these skills to good use in her position as assistant director for research data engagement and education at the University of Illinois.

“I combined tools and methods from data science and analytics with storytelling to make sense of my unit’s data and to help researchers make sense of theirs,” she said.

storytellers are after: meaning. They want to find the signal in all of this noise. And they want others to find it too, perhaps long after their own careers are complete. Each dataset is a story and raw material for stories waiting to be told.”

According to Turk, the students who have enrolled in the course have been outstanding, “always finding ways to tell meaningful stories from data.” He hopes they leave the class with an understanding that stories permeate their lives and that shaping the stories they tell others and about others is a responsibility they carry with them.

“One reason that this course means a lot to me is because it gives students the opportunity to really bring together the different threads of study at the iSchool,”Turk said.

“It’s a way to combine across levels of technicality, and it gives students permission to take a holistic approach to how they present data.”

Library Trends bilingual issue explores Cuban librarianship

F

or the first time in the journal’s history, Library Trends has published a bilingual issue. Communities and Technologies: Realities, Challenges, and Opportunities for Librarians in Cuba was edited by Kate Williams, iSchool associate professor; Pedro Urra González, professor of information technologies at the University of Havana’s School of Library and Information Sciences; and Professor Yohannis Martí-Lahera, professor, director of information, and director of the Central Library at the University of Havana.

The issue, published in English and Spanish, includes articles that were written in English or Spanish and then translated into the other language. Translation services were provided by Steffes & Associates Language and Translation, LLC (SALT), specifically by lead translators Lisa M. Rodríguez and Lizandra Perez.

The issue highlights the value of global collaboration and knowledge sharing, focusing on the contributions of Cuba’s libraries through technology and community work.

It examines new directions in Cuban librarianship, particularly free and open-source resources that empower diverse individuals and organizations.

Articles address topics such as the impact of information literacy programs and services on community health, including the health of seniors; challenges and breakthroughs in institutional repositories; the

use of linked open data to transform paperbased library catalogs; and the creation of a library floor plan that promotes citizen empowerment and community development. The final article emphasizes how Cuba’s participation in international library work advances both Cuban and global librarianship, promoting positive, collaborative partnerships.

According to Williams, producing a bilingual issue was essential, allowing Library Trends to provide direct access to the content for audiences in Latin America and Spain.

“It was challenging, and a professional translation team was a must. Thank you to the excellent SALT translators! It also was only possible because my two co-editors, Pedro Urra and Yohannis Martí, are bilingual.

We bridged not only language but also different research traditions,” said Williams.

Events will be held in Urbana and Havana this fall to celebrate and reflect on the issue.

ive master’s students have been named 2019-2020 Spectrum Scholars by the American Library Association (ALA) Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services.

Established in 1997, the Spectrum Scholarship Program promotes diversity among graduate-level students pursuing degrees in library and information studies through ALA-accredited programs. Scholars are selected based on their commitment to equity and inclusion, demonstrated community outreach, commitment to the library profession, academic achievements, and leadership potential.

The Spectrum Scholarship recipients at Illinois are Nada Abdelrahim, Lauren Camarillo, Priscilla Resendiz, Diana Rocha, and Kevin Whiteneir. Each scholar receives $5,000 to assist with educational costs as well as more than $1,500 to attend the Spectrum Leadership Institute held during the ALA Annual Conference. In addition, the iSchool matches this diversity scholarship by providing each recipient with a tuition waiver. Illinois residents receive a grant from the Sylvia Murphy Williams Fund, given by the Illinois Library Association. Other benefits include continuing education and professional development opportunities, peer mentoring, and access to a large alumni network.

“The School is thrilled to continue our strong partnership with the ALA Spectrum Scholarship Program,” said Moises Orozco Villicana, director of enrollment management. “We look forward to increasing the awareness of these scholarship opportunities to existing and future students at the School. Practicum experience serves as homecoming for Nicole Miller

T

his summer MS/LIS student Nicole Miller returned home to San Antonio, Texas, to complete a practicum with the public library system that first sparked her interest in library and information science. When Miller was a teenager, she logged over 450 hours of community service with the teen program at the San Antonio Public Library. After completing her BA in literary studies from The University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson, she volunteered again at the library while finishing applications for master’s degree programs.

“My practicum manager at the Parman Branch Library at Stone Oak was the ex-teen librarian who had known me since I was 16,” Miller said. “She trusted me to help with projects that she might not have done if I was just some random intern, and she gave me more freedom to learn what I was interested in learning.”

In addition, since the manager had known her for so long, she was familiar with Miller’s occasional need to use a wheelchair, crutches, or a cane since she was a teen. According to Miller, this understanding “meant that I was really comfortable telling her when I couldn’t do something or needed help.”

When she wasn’t working directly with her manager, Miller worked mainly with the children’s and teen librarians. Her practicum experience included responsibilities such as signing up patrons for the summer reading program, assisting with teen time, and helping to plan and run the library’s end-of-summer event—a Harry Potter festival.

“I helped make over 400 wands out of chopsticks, hot glue, and spray paint, helped plan a scavenger hunt across the library, and wrote over 250 questions for our trivia contest. It was so much fun! Seeing everything come together was amazing. We had a huge number of attendees, and everyone was so excited about it. I loved being a part of making that happen,” she said.

As an undergraduate, Miller wrote an optional honors thesis on parenting roles and gender in Harry Potter, so the library’s event was, as she described it, “right up my alley.”

At the iSchool, Miller is interested in the area of youth services, particularly relating to teens. She hopes to apply to the PhD program for admission in Fall 2020.

Get to know Lauren Camarillo, MS student After completing her MS/LIS degree, Lauren Camarillo would like to work in an academic library with first-year and/or first-generation students. She recently was selected to participate in the 2019-2021 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Kaleidoscope Diversity Scholars Program, which offers financial support as well as professional development opportunities.

Why did you decide to pursue an LIS degree?

As a double major in English and Spanish at Texas A&M University, I worked for two and a half years in one of the University’s libraries, first as a student worker and later as a student coordinator. During this time, I gained invaluable reference experience and came to the realization that as an academic librarian, I would not only be able to tangibly help people at the reference desk but also to pursue my own interests through research and conference attendance; the balance between the two was really appealing to me.

My supervisor was always very supportive of me, especially as I began to explore librarianship as a career—she’s still a wonderful mentor to me today. She took the time to demonstrate the impact that librarians can have in students’ lives. As I learned more about librarianship, I also became very interested in the role libraries have in providing access to information.

Why did you choose the iSchool at Illinois?

I decided to attend the iSchool at Illinois because it seemed to invest in its students, especially when compared to the other schools that I considered. Not only did the iSchool provide extensive career advising and a wide variety of classes (giving me room to develop my many interests), it also provided the most opportunities to gain hands-on experience as a librarian-in-training, including the many assistantships that are offered.

Research Park recognizes iSchool students for outstanding work

T

On campus I am a graduate assistant at the Undergraduate Library and electronic theses and dissertations assistant in the Scholarly Communications and Publishing department in the Main Library. This summer I have an internship in Boston at the Biogen Library and Information Center, a corporate pharmaceutical library, where I am researching how to facilitate text mining as a library service, helping manage library communications on their library blog and social media platform (Yammer), and working with the library to create more educational materials for users.

What particular LIS topics interest you the most?

I’m interested in the role libraries play in providing equitable access to users and how the library can further support first-generation college students.

What do you do in your free time?

If I have free time outside of my jobs and school, I enjoy exploring the community/city wherever I am, primarily by eating at local restaurants. I’m from Dallas, so when I’m home, I love to visit the restaurants in my neighborhood. I also really love to read— mostly fiction, but I’m always willing to try something new. I also enjoy watching TV, and the two shows I love right now are “Jane the Virgin” and “La Casa de Papel.”

Saurav Yadav was named “Most Outstanding Graduate Intern” for his work at the COUNTRY Financial DigitaLab, and Harshit Gupta received the award for “Best Technological Innovation” for his work as a data scientist technology intern at Syngenta.

Yadav worked as a data scientist intern at the DigitaLab in the spring and as a project manager for the data team this summer.

“Through my internship, I not only gained valuable hands-on experience in various machine learning techniques and technologies like Tableau, Docker, and AWS but also polished my leadership, teamwork, and communication skills,” he said. “The best part about working at the company was the opportunity to use the latest technologies and the ease of working with Julia Hart, the site director, who has created an environment that focuses on the growth of every individual and constantly encourages innovative and creative ideas from all the interns.”

Hart was likewise impressed with Yadav’s leadership and technical skills during his time at the company.

“Saurav continually strives to improve processes and encourages collaboration,” she said. “He wants the best for the company and has built excellent relationships with other staff members to take project requests from ideas to products.”

What career plans or goals do you have?

In the future, I hope to work in an academic library with first-year and/or first-generation students. After I graduate in May 2020, regardless of where I am, I hope that I will always contribute to fostering an inclusive and diverse workspace.

Gupta’s project involved creating a cloudbased data science solution from scratch for the data scientists working at Syngenta.

“What made this a challenging task was the time and budget constraints placed on me, since the company already had a negative experience with a third-party provider for this solution. This made the project exciting as well as rewarding for me,” he said.

Gupta enjoyed the startup environment at the Syngenta Digital Innovation Lab. “The focus at the lab is not only getting things done but also making sure that you are taking an innovative approach toward your work,” he said. “I was given complete freedom and the opportunity to do the best work I can do, which I believe added immense value to my overall experience at the company.”

According to John Capozzo, Gupta’s supervisor and a data scientist on Syngenta’s Global Data Science Team, “We wanted a proof of concept in eight weeks with a few bells and whistles, and Harshit ended up giving us a full-blown proof of concept with things we couldn’t imagine in four weeks.

He exceeded expectations in every way.”

Of the 800+ interns working within the Research Park, less than 30 became finalists for the awards, and only 5 individuals and 1 group were awarded the winning prizes. The winners and finalists were determined from a pool of nominees by a team of Research Park professionals. Awards were presented on July 25.

Spectrum Scholars Class of 2012-2013

This issue highlights the accomplishments of iSchool alumni who were members of the ALA Spectrum Scholars Class of 2012-2013. For the past nine years, the iSchool has welcomed fifty ALA Spectrum scholars to the MS/LIS degree program, which is the second most among ALA programs.

Of the fifty ALA Spectrum Scholars enrolled at the iSchool, forty have earned their degree and the remaining ten are making progress toward their degree completion.

I am currently an assistant professor of instructional design and librarian at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY). I have been in this role since the spring 2017 semester.

Spectrum provided me with access to a network of people who shared a similar career path and aspirations. The biggest benefit I have gotten from and still get from Spectrum is the sense of pride it instilled in me. Being a librarian of color and a Spectrum scholar has been a badge of honor that has propelled me to heights in both my professional and personal life that I could not have achieved without it. The organization does an excellent job of maintaining contact with all of the Spectrum scholars. Spectrum is truly a family.

I am a user experience analyst within the Leadership Computing Facility at Argonne National Laboratory, where I provide users with access to our supercomputers and analyze our access processes and tools based on user needs. I’m also an Argonne education volunteer and a member of Women in Science and Technology (WIST), and I actively volunteer for a wide range of outreach initiatives, including Hour of Code, CodeGirls, Summer Coding Camp, and Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Through the iSchool and Spectrum scholarship, I obtained the assistance that I needed in order to continue my graduate studies without the ongoing worry of covering the full amount of tuition each semester. It also provided me with the opportunity to attend the American Library Association (ALA) annual meeting where I was able to learn more about the areas of focus within librarianship and information science, as well as connect with librarians of color that are breaking barriers within the industry.

I am currently a general librarian in teen services for the Long Beach (CA) Public Library system. I work with an amazing staff and provide teen-specific programming, supervise teen and adult volunteers, and work within a diverse community. I recently went to Cambodia for a book buying trip to purchase new materials for our robust Khmerbilingual collection. Long Beach has the largest circulating public Khmer collection in the United States. Thanks to a grant from the Library Services and Technology Act, the library is currently completing a Khmer Cataloging Project that will make books in the collection searchable in Khmer script in the Library’s online catalog.

The iSchool was a great experience for me! I was part of the Leep program. The iSchool and Spectrum Scholarship enabled me to network and make friends and has prepared me to give back to both communities by continuing to attend conferences and join committees, as well as to encourage and inform future library students about these opportunities.

I am currently a practitioner researcher in residence at OCLC Research and visiting digital research services librarian at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Much of my work is focused on the development of a library community research agenda (to be published by OCLC early December 2019) that charts responsible engagement with data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Running alongside that, I serve as principal investigator for an Andrew W. Mellon funded project, “Collections as Data: Part to Whole,” an effort that aims to catalyze development of models that support production and use of machine actionable cultural heritage collections.

The flexibility of the iSchool curriculum and the opportunities for research projects and work experience with the University of Illinois Library were integral to getting me on the path to where I am now. In particular, I want to give a shout out to Jana Diesner, Kyle Rimkus, Harriett Green, and Sarah Shreeves. Without the Spectrum scholarship and the corresponding financial support it initiated from the iSchool, I would not have been able to attend library school, and I am grateful for that.

I am the scholarly communications librarian at the University of San Francisco. I manage the institutional repository, copyright advisory, library publishing program, open education resources (OER) program, and open access policy. I am also the vice chair of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Research and Scholarly Environment Committee this year and remain engaged with the Asian Pacific American Libraries Association (APALA) through their mentoring program.

I really could not have made it through my graduate program without the Spectrum Scholarship offered by the iSchool and the community of Spectrum Scholars. I met so many great people through Spectrum and felt so supported, in a very material way, by the School.

I’m currently the community information coordinator at Skokie Public Library, a wonderful north suburb of Chicago. As a member of our Community Engagement Department, I develop research and information services for community partners and promote access to information and resources. I create, curate, and share community information internally and externally, synthesizing community information for deeper internal understanding of community aspirations and needs.

The iSchool provided a breadth of opportunities to pursue the areas of information science that interested me the most. I was able to curate my professional path and partner with faculty to develop my research skills and comprehension of the field. The Spectrum Scholarship, in turn, opened opportunities to build community and network with professionals who shared similar lived experiences as myself, and who looked like me. The relationships I built allowed, and continue to allow, me to persevere in my chosen profession.

2019 ISAA award recipients recognized The iSchool Alumni Association (ISAA) honored its 2019 award recipients at the ISAA annual meeting and reception, which was held during the annual meeting of the American Library Association in Washington, DC.

Scott Burgh (MS ’86) is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Each year this award is given to an alum who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of library and information science.

Burgh served as the chief law librarian for the city of Chicago for almost 28 years until his retirement in 2017. Throughout his career, he made important contributions to the Chicago and Illinois law library communities, including his efforts to standardize and improve state and local court rules and ordinances. He also contributed to the field of historic legal document preservation, working on digitization projects to, among other things, scan the opinions of the Corporation Counsel of the City of Chicago and the 1974 House Judiciary Committee hearings on Richard Nixon’s impeachment. His professional achievements include having his original primary research cited by Justice Breyer’s dissent in the United States Supreme Court case of McDonald v. City of Chicago. Beyond his professional contributions, Burgh is a humanitarian who has worked with LexisNexis and Reed Cares to obtain books for Madagascar and has served as volunteer, board member, and president of the Gerber-Hart Library, a Midwest gay and lesbian resource center. He also has helped build a collection of government documents on the AIDS epidemic and anti-gay violence that marked the ’80s.

Betty Bush is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Each year this award is given to an individual who has served ISAA or the School in an exceptional way.

Bush has served as a reviewer for The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books since 1993, an adjunct instructor for the iSchool since 2002, and a mentor for countless numbers of youth services students. As a teacher, she is nothing short of legendary. Year after year, Bush is included on the University’s List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent. Her pragmatism, irreverence, and years of frontline experience as a school librarian inspire her students not only about the course topics but also about the profession. One of her nominators, Deborah Stevenson, writes, “Her example and legacy will be with those students for their professional lives and will doubtless be passed on to their colleagues and staffers in turn.”

Kevin Kelley (MS ’19) is the recipient of the Student Award, which recognizes a student who “caught the spirit” of the library and information science profession while employed in a library setting and chose to enter the iSchool’s master’s program. This student must have a strong commitment to return to a professional position in a library setting.

Kelley worked as a young adult library assistant in the teen space in Evanston, Illinois, where, combined with his strong arts and social justice background, he found his motivation for working with young people “without there being a paywall for services.” He is now a children’s librarian at New York Public Library (NYPL), contributor to Public Libraries Online, and member of the NYPL’s Best Books for Kids committee and the Stonewall Youth and YA awards committee. He “caught the spirit” by working in a library setting and demonstrating a deep commitment to those he works with and serves.

Soraya Silverman-Montoya (MS ’11) is the recipient of the Leadership Award, which is given to an alum who has graduated in the past ten years and shown leadership in the field.

Silverman-Montoya is head of Youth Services at the Las VegasClark County Library District.

Within two years of earning her master’s degree, Silverman-Montoya became one of the Joint Chiefs of Storytime Underground, a highly respected early literacy training resource for youth services librarians. Her honors include being selected as one of the 50 participants for ALA’s Emerging Leaders in 2014 and being named the 2016 Nevada Librarian of the Year by the Nevada Library Association (NLA), of which she is a past president. Since 2013, she has served on six different Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) committees. She has mentored other youth services librarians through ALSC and NLA and participated in the Bill Morris Seminar, which prepares librarians to evaluate books in order to serve on book award committees. Silverman-Montoya also serves on her library district’s Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce.

Recent graduate develops new open-access journal for anime and manga studies

D

uring his time at the iSchool, recent graduate Billy Tringali (MS ’19) established and launched the Journal of Anime and Manga Studies (JAMS), an open-access publication dedicated to providing an ethical, peer-reviewed space for academics, students, and independent researchers to share their research in the field of anime, manga, cosplay, and fandom studies. A fan himself, Tringali has been drawn to popular culture scholarship since he was an undergraduate studying English and anthropology at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, under the professor who first sparked his interest in popular culture scholarship, Dr. Leora Lev. ”She’s the first person who really inspired me, and mentored me in pursuing popular culture.”

“When I got into the University of Illinois, I was interested in looking at anime critically but found that so many anime studies papers are spread across dozens of academic journals—literature journals, technology journals, tourism journals, even library journals,” Tringali said. “From an information science perspective, I realized that the level of information literacy one needed to have to locate and truly dig into all these amazing pieces would be too high for someone interested in starting research on anime, manga, cosplay, or their fandoms.”

—Billy Tringali “My ultimate goal in founding JAMS was to have a home for interdisciplinary anime and manga studies scholarship that would be accessible to those outside higher ed, beginning researchers first looking into anime and manga studies, and those attending universities whose libraries might not have the budget to invest in popular culture resources.”

JAMS is an interdisciplinary publication that accepts articles from a variety of disciplines. According to Tringali, the journal is interested in the scholarly analysis of anime through any number of theoretical lenses but also interested in the qualitative and quantitative research surrounding anime.

Scholarly book reviews of texts concerning anime, manga, cosplay, and related fandom culture are also considered for publication.

and publishing, serving as his advisor for the JAMS project.

“I’m grateful to Dr. Bonn for being so generous with her time and support,” he said.

Tringali, who worked as a graduate assistant in the Scholarly Commons within the University Library, is currently the Law Librarian for Outreach at the Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library at Emory University.

“I’m fortunate enough to be working with such a fantastic team in the Access Services Department and at the Hugh F. MacMillan Library! I get the opportunity to investigate and address students’ information needs, promote library resources, and build connections and better communication with groups at Emory Law School and beyond. Though my day-to-day work doesn’t often overlap with anime and manga,” Tringali jokes, “the organizational, communication, and workflows skills I have gained and continue to gain as the editorin-chief of JAMS have made me a better librarian, and a better communicator.”

The Journal of Anime and Manga Studies aims to have its first issue released in early 2020.

Sherlock receives travel grant to present at Charleston Conference

iSchool alumnus honors Linda C. Smith with gift to School

A

travel grant provided by the iSchool will allow MS/LIS student Morgan Sherlock to present her research with Laurel Post (MS ’19) and Affiliate Professor Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe (MS ’94) at the Charleston Conference without the extra financial stress. In the paper they will be presenting, “Behind the Gate: Early Career Researchers’ Motivations for Using ResearchGate,” the coauthors examine the motivations behind why early career researchers use the academic social network site ResearchGate and how publishers and librarians can use these findings to better understand and support their user communities.

“This travel grant is key to jump-starting my career in librarianship, and this conference will provide an opportunity to meet leaders in the LIS field, bring back industry takeaways, and share my research,” Sherlock said.

According to Sherlock, the most valuable part of her graduate education has been the opportunity to get hands-on work experience at one of the best library systems in the country. She is currently employed at both the Undergraduate Library and the Illinois Early Intervention Clearinghouse, the latter of which is operated by the Early Childhood Collective at the University.

After graduation, Sherlock hopes to work in “either a public or academic space—anything that involves engagement, outreach, people . . . and of course some good books!”

rofessor and Executive Associate Dean Linda C. Smith was the first person that Richard Pearce-Moses (MS ’01) contacted after discovering that Illinois offered an ALA-accredited library and information science program online. He was interested in pursuing his MS/LIS degree through the School’s Leep program but had missed the application deadline by a few days.

“Fortunately, there was a note that applications would be accepted as long as there was room in the program,” he recalled. “I immediately sent a note asking if space was available. It was in the evening—late evening in Illinois—and I had an answer from Linda in minutes. Her responses were always so quick that I teased her that she had a T-1 connection wired into her head.”

Pearce-Moses, who also holds a master’s in American studies, had been employed as an archivist for almost twenty years when he applied to the Leep program. When he started his MS/LIS studies, he was working at the Heard Museum but by graduation had moved to the Arizona State Library and Archives. His last position before retiring was as director of the Master of Archival Studies program at Clayton State University.

Smith’s dedication to LIS education includes establishing an endowed fund, the Harold Ladd Smith Jr. and Flora Lancaster Smith Endowment Fund for Student Travel, in honor of her parents.

Inspired by Smith’s generosity, PearceMoses and his husband, Frank Loulan, created an endowed scholarship for students

in the Master of Archival Studies program at Clayton.

“I wanted to acknowledge Linda’s contributions to the profession by supporting her efforts to provide opportunities for people to join the field,” he said.

Pearce-Moses has made a commitment to donate $5k to the Harold Ladd Smith Jr. and Flora Lancaster Smith Endowment Fund. He challenges fellow alumni to match his contribution, as a way of congratulating Smith on her retirement from the iSchool at the end of June.

“I believe that being a professional is a lot more than just having knowledge and skills to do a job. Being a professional means being committed to more than yourself, being committed to the larger community—participating in and supporting the work of professional organizations, working with others to use our expertise to make the world a better place, and building relationships with others that enrich our lives and the lives of others. All professionals can give time and energy,” said Pearce-Moses.

“I hope that those who are able will also contribute money to foster the next generation of professionals.”

onna Bessant (MS ’70) wants today’s library and information science students to succeed in their chosen profession and experience the “joyful rewards” of working with young people, as she did during her career. To lend them a hand, she has directed a portion of her estate to establish scholarships for iSchool students in need.

The scholarships will support everyday expenses and advance the short- and longterm goals for students who plan to work with children and young adult services in libraries.

Bessant earned a BS in education from Illinois State University, an MS/LIS from Illinois, and a Certificate of Educational Administration from the University of San Francisco. She began her career as a classroom teacher in a Chicago suburb. Following two years of experience, she joined the Overseas Dependents Schools and taught children from military families in Okinawa and Germany. While in Germany, Bessant began to consider an advanced degree in a field connected to education and ultimately

decided, “what better connection could there be than school libraries?”

Bessant started her LIS coursework while still teaching overseas, coming to the University only in the summers of 1966 through 1969. After completing her master’s degree, she worked in librarianship and administration in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District in California. She also taught courses in information science, literacy, and children’s literature for master’s programs in various educational institutions.

Bessant retired from the district as director of instructional materials and school libraries in 2000, but she continues to work on literacy projects with the Monterey County Office of Education. She is also involved in additional book and reading projects, including Reading Is Fundamental and the International Board on Books for Young People.

Lynne M. Thomas (MS ’99) received her eighth Hugo Award during a ceremony at the 77th World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.

Decade: 1980s Alayna Davies-Smith (MS ’81), accepted the branch manager position of Lahaina Public Library on the island of Maui, one of 51 branches in the Hawaii State Public Library System.

She also serves on the Hawaii Library Association Board of Directors.

Jennifer L. Marill (MS ’88), chief of the Technical Services Division at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), received the 2019 NIH Director’s Award for leadership in building the NLM digital collection and providing access to biomedical resources.

Beth McNeil (MS ’89) was appointed dean of Libraries and School of Information Studies and professor at Purdue University on July 1.

Kathryn Harris (MS ’71) has been appointed to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Board of Directors. She served as the director of library services at the library and museum until her retirement in 2015.

Nancy Arthur McDaniels (MS ’70) retired eight years ago from the St. Paul Public Library.

She volunteers several hours each week.

David Pilachowski (MS ’73) spoke on a panel at the 2019 National ACRL Conference about lessons learned from the ALA/AIA winning Williams College library building. He retired in 2017 after serving as director of libraries at Williams College but continues to consult on space planning.

Decade: 1960s Julie Kuenzel Kwan (MS ’68), 2018-2019 president of the UCLA Faculty Center Board of Governors, continues to serve on the board of the UCLA Emeriti Association. She retired in 2016 as librarian emerita with 36 years at the UCLA Library. She also served 12 years with the University of Southern California Libraries.

Guy St. Clair (MS ’65) has received the John Cotton Dana Award, the Special Libraries Association’s top honor, which recognizes a lifetime of achievement as well as exceptional service to the association and profession.

Decade: 1950s Patricia Fitzgerald Stenstrom (MS ’57) passed away on July 2, 2019, in Woodlands, Texas. She worked for thirty years at the University of Illinois Library, concluding her career as the library and information science librarian.
