To accomplish the school’s goals, it takes the support of the entire community-parents, Board of Directors, alumni, faculty, staff, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends. Through their contributions, they have ensured the continuing excellence of the education that our students, faculty, and parents come to expect.

Aloha Island School ‘Ohana & Friends,

I am delighted to write that the 2017-18 school year was another successful time for Island School.

Our energetic and talented students are led by accomplished and motivated faculty who excel in helping children discover and acknowledge their unique voices.

Our small class sizes and studentcentered learning approach foster success in our graduates and prepare them for college and beyond. In June we held a beautiful ceremony at Wilcox Gym to celebrate our 22nd graduating class, the largest in Island School history. Incredible speeches and presentations were given by our 35 seniors, which is just one of the many traditions that makes our school distinctive. Our students earned over 2 million dollars in scholarships and merit aid with acceptances from 115 universities.

Island School strives to provide an unrivaled education while serving local families in an ever-changing world. Over the past two years, our Board of Directors revisited our mission, purpose, and value system through a Strategic Plan Process.

As a result of this dedication, the generosity of our parents, faculty, students, alumni, and the hard work of Chris Ing, our new mission statement was launched last school year: Educating the mind, inspiring the heart. Preparing Kaua`i’s youth to lead lives of significance.

The progress Island School has made in the past few years motivates us to strive for another level.Our Board of Directors acknowledges that a critical part of their stewardship is to ensure the current success of Island School continues to progress for decades in the future. A capital campaign is underway that will refresh and expand our campus with a two 3

Development Report

I

often find myself reflecting on where we live: on this beautiful island, in the middle of the Pacific, surrounded by ocean. During my moments of reflection, I find myself amazed at the courage of the Native Hawaiians who navigated such vastness with only a double hull canoe, sail, and stars. The amount of courage needed to begin such a journey, with no visible destination, is difficult to comprehend or measure.

Interestingly, I believe we find ourselves in a similar plight when talking about education. We look to begin a journey together — parent, child, and educator — and aspire to seek a desired destination. We believe we know where the voyage will lead, but often we are mistaken. Our life experiences have a fascinating way of shaping our perceptions of the world we live in, and often determine what our role might be.

Every evening the legendary navigator, Mao Piailug, watched the setting sun to discern what weather awaited his crew the next day by analyzing the color of the sky and cloud formations. Similar to how a crew trusts their navigator, we trust that our teachers know their way. We in the Development Office seek to support our teachers and staff in their efforts to inspire and teach our children.

So how can we help our children on their journey? How do we guide them to reach their destination? How do we make a difference in their lives? The answer is YOU. You are the difference in supporting our children who are voyaging through their varied learning experiences. Through monetary donations, in-kind donations, and other support systems we make our children’s experiences more diverse and filled with richness.

Thank you for navigating with us, as we look ahead to our children’s future. Mahalo nui loa.

The Voyager Fund...Join the Club!

We are honored to recognize all who make Island School’s Annual Giving campaign a part of their yearly charitable giving through Gift Clubs.

The goal of the Voyager Fund is to raise funds to support the students and mission of Island School.

Tuition alone does not provide enough to cover our yearly expenses. The Voyager Fund makes up the additional 17-20% we need to meet our operating budget each year. Full support from the Island School community speaks volumes to future donors, prospective parents, and foundations.

Membership is open to individuals and couples, businesses, and foundations who give one or more gifts to the Annual Giving campaign during the fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Corporate matching gifts may be applied to qualify for membership.

The Chairman’s Circle CHAMPIONING ISLAND SCHOOL

The Chairman’s Circle recognizes Island School’s most generous contributors, those who exemplify and inspire leadership in giving. $5,000 or more qualify donors for membership.

The Cornerstone Club THE INDISPENSABLE FOUNDATION OF AN ENDEAVOR

The Cornerstone Club honors those who help to establish the foundation of financial support necessary to sustain the school’s commitment to academic excellence. Gifts of $2,500-$4,999 qualify donors for membership.

The Challenge Club COMMENDING SPECIAL EFFORT

The Challenge Club reflects the special effort displayed by Island School students, teachers, and parents throughout the year. Gifts of $1,000-$2,499 qualify donors for membership.

The Chapter Club SUPPORT STUDENTS DURING THEIR EDUCATIONAL YEARS

The Chapter Club acknowledges that each student’s experience at Island School marks an important chapter in his or her life. Gifts of $500-$999 qualify donors for membership.

At Island School, Morning Circle is a tradition where students gather to welcome visitors, make announcements, celebrate achievements, and join in song. Gifts of $100-$499 qualify donors for membership.

Experience the Magic of Camelot Island School’s 39th Annual Gala Auction Knights and maidens alike journeyed from mauka to makai for this noble cause. This legendary evening was full of festivities and magic where the noblest and galant gave gifts of grandeur. Patrons were treated to a jubilant selection of live, almost live, and silent auction items ranging from lavish trips to unique jewelry and art. Proceeds from this grand event went to tuition aid at Island School and this year raised $188,000.

Auction Co-Chairs Alan King and Laura Ryan, and Acquisitions Co-Chairs Yen Upson and Debbie Edgerton worked tirelessly along with their exceptional volunteers to turn this gala into a unique and memorable evening. Fun Funding

In the first trimester of 2017, all of our high school Economics students participated in American Savings Bank’s biennial KeikiCo Contest, a business plan competition where students can showcase their best ideas for a chance to win $25,000 or more for their school. Mackenzie (Kenz) Hubbard and Julia Massaro, two of our senior girls, won second place in the state of Hawai‘i. Their entry was for Paws on Wheels, a business idea for a company that promotes happiness and health in the people of Kaua‘i by providing access to stress-relieving dogs. Based on their success and Island School’s high participation rate, Island School was awarded $25,000.

The elementary school 2018 Jog-a-thon was a huge success! This surpassed their fundraising goal of $3,000 and raised $3,901.50! This annual fundraiser is to raise money for P.E. and playground equipment. K-5th grade students raise money by securing sponsorships for a 20 minute fun run at Poipu Beach park. The event takes place once a year during the month of February. All elementary students attend, and in addition to participating in the 20 minute fun run, students also enjoy water relay events, an inflatable water slide and a picnic lunch for all their hard work and support for their school.

National Competition News

Mock Trial Reno, NV Island School’s mock trial team has consistently competed well, placing second the past two years running.

This year, our voyagers won the 2018 Hawai‘i High School Mock Trial Competition for the first time in school history. This is a remarkable accomplishment for a team from one of the outer islands. To win the Hawai‘i State Championship, the team first had to win the Kaua‘i island competition against a well-coached and veteran Kaua‘i High School team.

The team then traveled to Oahu for the state competition, where they beat Hawai‘i Baptist Academy in the semi-finals and Punahou in the finals to advance to the national competition in Reno, NV. Island School was proud to represent Hawai‘i and the Island of Kaua‘i at the National High School Mock Trial Competition. Each year approximately 30,000 students participate in local high school mock trial competitions throughout the

United States, Guam, South Korea, and the Northern Mariana Islands and this event highlights the best teams competing for the championship title. Approximately 500 high school students participated in the national competition in Reno this year.

Our mock trial team had informal scrimmages against Korea International School, Utah, Texas, and Indiana. The team’s four official trials were against Florida, Delaware, Alabama, and Arkansas. With the exception of the Delaware team, Island School competed against schools 10 times its size and represented Hawai‘i well.

While Island School did not earn a team trophy (awarded to top ten only), we had two students place in the top ten for witnesses - seniors Ethan Jeal and Sydney Agudong.

There were about 120 witnesses in the competition, and no other school had two winners in any category (witness

or attorney). For fun, the team attended a Reno Aces minor league baseball game, went rock climbing at the largest indoor climbing wall, and saw a Cirque Paris show (similar to Cirque-du-Soleil).

Is this the first time Island School has competed at the National History Day State Competition?

First time at Nationals?

Hawai‘i History Day has been around for 29 years.

Island School has competed in the state competition in previous years, but this year was the first time that Island School, or any Kaua‘i team, has competed in Nationals.

Who did you compete against to get to Nationals?

There were hundreds of kids who participated across the State of Hawai‘i. We placed 2nd overall for Best Scoring Exhibition Group.

What were the winning topics/projects?

Our winning project was on the topic of The Mexican Repatriation.

Why did you pick that topic?

We picked that topic after learning about “DREAMers” —young, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children— in our Spanish class.

How many students compete at Nationals?

There were approximately 3,000 students who compete at Nationals, but more than half a million students compete around the world. There are students representing the 50 states and Washington D.C., China, Korea, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and South Asia.

Did you win any awards?

In the state competition we won the Hawai‘i Labor Heritage Council Award for outstanding projects in labor history.

What fun events did you attend while at Nationals?

We went to the Smithsonian Museum, Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Hill, and attended a Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox baseball game.

As you researched, what surprised you the most?

During our research, we were most surprised that this event has happened before. We thought that since we [the United States] have made this mistake once that we wouldn’t repeat it. But obviously that is not the case because people are being separated from their families today.

What fundraisers did you do to support this trip?

The road to Nationals was a challenging one due to lack of funding for travel, so we had to come up with our own ways to raise support money. We put together a “Lucky Drawing” with different prizes that were generously donated from hotels and shops around the island. We also sold Sudz car wash tickets. ischool.org

Peter King was born on Oahu, raised on Kaua‘i, and attended Island School from 1978-1982. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of the Pacific and a Master of Science in Geography from the University of Nevada, Reno.

After graduating, Peter found his purpose in teaching environmental education. “Many of the scientific principles and theories I was introduced to in high school, I failed to connect with and didn’t see the importance of until I began teaching kids. I gravitated naturally to environmental education and began teaching elementary school students about Natural History of the oceans and forests.” He has been involved in the field of Environmental Education since 1992 and has taught Geographic Information Science at Kauai Community College. Peter is also a SCUBA instructor and works with the Makana O Kauai community SCUBA club, sharing his passion for the underwater world.

Though he is a new faculty member to our Technology Department, he has been an active part of the Island School community since 2010 as an alumnus, parent, and former Board member. This year he is teaching Middle School Digital Media, Yearbook and Principles of Engineering.

Peter recently attended training in Seattle, WA to implement the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum into his classes. According to the PLTW course outline:

The program leverages the success of the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) and Project Lead the Way’s applied learning programs.”

“The first element of the program is a set of college and career pathways in three fields - engineering, biomedical science, and computer science - that incorporate both AP and PLTW courses. Peter’s class, Principles of Engineering, is a foundation course of the high school engineering pathway. This survey course exposes students to some of the major concepts that they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering course of study. Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of materials and structures, automation, and kinematics. The course applies and concurrently develops secondary level knowledge and skills in mathematics, science, and technology.” Peter and PLTW are leading the way in ensuring that students are receiving the necessary guidance, instruction, and information in order to be better prepared for the potential opportunities that lie ahead.

Since graduating from high school, Noah Randolph-Flagg has been rocking it. Island School spoke with this alum and dug deep into his journey before, during, and after attending Island School.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THIS ISLAND SCHOOL ALUMNUSNASA OR STANFORD?

F

or Noah’s family, moving to Kaua‘i seemed like the ultimate adventure and would be among the first of many to come. His parents moved their family from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Kaua‘i after receiving the news that they had obtained employment from Kaua‘i Community College and from Island School. After packing up their belongings, they embarked to Kaua‘i and never looked back.

While reflecting upon his first year at Island School, Noah states, “I remember being so intimidated. I felt like I was behind academically and socially and needed to work as hard as I could to catch up.” He recalls Joan Shaw’s organizational skills and how she helped him establish a more efficient way to organize his class and homework materials. Peggy Ellenburg’s contagious excitement for theatre helped Noah come out of his shell after being cast in the 7th grade play, Robin Hood. “It was a great introduction to Island School and the supportive community there. I still channel the things I learned from Peggy whenever I teach or give a conference talk.” He also reminisced about Kathy Jones’ boundless curiosity and optimism for science saying, “I know of several classmates at Island School who have been hugely affected by Kathy’s teaching and mentorship and I remain very grateful to Island School and her.” With the

The summer after 10th grade was full of new experiences for Noah. He attended Harvard University and took classes in government and science.

The students that were also a part of the program shared a mutual excitement about the prospect of attending college. Noah came back to Kaua‘i following that experience with excitement mixed with island fever. This motivated him to finish school early and after applying to multiple colleges he decided to attend Carleton College. With the only long pair of pants he owned he jetted off to start school in frigid Northfield, MN. Noah felt Carleton had a similar community environment as Island School and after being convinced by his college roommate to take an Introduction to Geology course, he decided to major in Geology.

a geologist seemed like a dream job particularly coming from Kaua’i, rambling outside, and learning about the world around me after spending a full term camping in New Zealand.”

During his second year at Carleton, he applied for and received a geology research grant and proceeded to email someone at the US Geological Survey (USGS) regarding a possible research excursion to Cameroon, Africa.

Unfortunately, they were no longer doing research in Africa but they were able to offer him an opportunity in the Pacific Northwest. Noah accepted and was excited to start acquiring research experience with the USGS. However, 23

he was quickly dismayed by the fact that the only “experience” they would allow him to acquire was to transport equipment (sledge hammers) up and down volcanoes. Fortunately, that opportunity paid off and he recently finished working at the USGS for the past 10 years helping to develop their monitoring program for volcanic eruption warnings using hot springs while simultaneously giving a whole new meaning to the phrase, “Started from the bottom”.

Noah had studied abroad in China during college and by his senior year at Carleton he desperately wanted to go back because he felt that he was consistently surprised and constantly learning. He proceeded to apply for a Fulbright Research grant to study water scarcity and climate change in China which not only gave him the opportunity to live in central China for almost a year but also provided many learning opportunities, “including how to deal with research projects that don’t totally work.” Noah attributes his love for the Chinese language to Catharine Barale at Island School.

“Catharine has such a systematic way of thinking about language and it influenced how I learned to speak Chinese as well as how I think about science problems.” Noah also has experience teaching and was recently awarded with the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award and states that he still channels the lessons he learned at Island School.

So what is this sharp scientist up to now? Well, he deferred starting a PhD at UC Berkeley in order to gain the experience required for the degree first. He worked for several years and received invaluable support from his advisor, Michael Manga who reminds Noah of his Island School teacher, Kathy Jones. How earthquakes and volcanoes operate are his main focal points.

He’s won awards for conference presentations at the American Geophysical Union, he appeared in a PBS NOVA documentary, made a video with his good friend from Island School, Dianna Cowern, (also with PBS), and has worked for several months in Taiwan on a research award.

erhaps the most important part to me of my time at Island School are the friendships and community I had there. I remain really close friends with several people at Island School. Dianna Cowern and I collaborated to make a video about the geophysics of Kaua‘i. Kim Mayfield and I hang out at science conferences. I just got off the phone with my good friend, Erik Talvi...”

The stars are aligning for this Voyager as he has also been looking at wedding venues with his fiancé, Alexandra Long who also went to

Carleton and is finishing her PhD at the University of San Francisco. Her research seeks to understand how cells divide and what goes wrong to cause them to divide badly and form cancer. These two trailblazers will be married in the spring of next year in the San Francisco area.

Noah has defended his thesis and has recently been offered two amazing job opportunities to ponder over. The first is a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Stanford University looking at how volcanoes build up pressure to erupt. The second is a Postdoctoral Fellowship with NASA searching for evidence of life in space.

So what is next for this Island School Alumnus? NASA! Noah will spend 2-3 years at the Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. Island School could not be more proud of his accomplishments and the grit that it took to get to where he is today. The sky’s the limit!

People were concerned about the geothermal power plant which is now covered in lava.

The reason is that the eruptions begin (almost always) when water boils. When that water boils it can explode...It’s important to understand how water boils underground and what determines whether it explodes or not.

2. How volcanic gas can impact the crater where the lava comes from.

The crater where the lava comes from goes up and down almost everyday. This is probably due to gas building up at the top of the magma chamber. Where does that gas go? What sets the cycle?

3. How VOG impacts the environment.

The VOG is an example of how volcanic eruptions keep sunlight from reaching the ground. This reflects sunlight back into space and can cause damage to crops.

Stephanie Achuara is a woman with a mission: Island School’s mission. “Educating the mind, inspiring the heart.

Preparing Kaua`i’s youth to lead lives of significance.”

Stephanie, our current Middle School Department Head, knows what it takes to equip our students for success, and it’s not just about academics.

Island School recognizes that Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a driving force in student learning, academic achievements, and emotional health. It is the process of developing students’ and adults’ social and emotional competencies — the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that individuals need to make successful choices. Research has shown that social and emotional development can be fostered, and Stephanie is using Hawaiian values to do it.

“Teachers are naturally integrating SEL into their academic curriculum such as language arts, math, social studies, or health as we promote a caring culture. Island School has implemented organizational strategies that promote SEL as a school-wide initiative that creates a climate and culture conducive to learning. We use Hawaiian Values to guide the attitudes and behaviors of the students, faculty, and staff throughout the school year.”

THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR ISLAND SCHOOL

Forty-one years have passed since our seven Founding Mothers opened the doors of Island School on the shores of Kealia Beach with only 12 students. Since that day, Island School has grown to a 38 acre campus centrally located in Lihue and serves 416 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Our children live in a world that is in constant change and Island School is changing as well - the capital campaign will be beneficial for the future of Island School and Kaua‘i.

The goal is simple: give our faculty, students, staff and community the space and tools needed to be leaders in education. Expansion is necessary in order to meet our students’ needs and satisfy our desire to further grow our student body.

The capital campaign will raise $5.2 million over two years to complete a new classroom building with a multifaceted makerspace. This building will benefit both Island School and the entire Kaua‘i community.

The new building will create dynamic learning environments that will accommodate for our expanding student body and community groups.
