Island School is the only accredited independent nonprofit college preparatory school for grades PreKindergarten - 12 on the island of Kaua‘i. Founded in 1977 by 7 women, our school continues to provide a challenging curriculum that integrates deeper-learning and social-emotional-learning with traditional practices and Hawaiian values. Island School students are equipped to be independent thinkers, confident learners, curious and creative explorers and are ready to make a positive impact on their environment.

Island School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and is accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The Point of the Compass A Letter to the Island School Community Aloha Island School ‘Ohana and Friends,

The 2019-2020 school year was certainly one for the history books. Our motivated and talented faculty and staff led our engaged and eager students through unique experiences and to great successes. When the school had to pivot quickly to distance learning after Spring Break 2020, our teachers kept up the caliber of an Island School education and our students continued their studies and their progress. We were even able to share some of their accomplishments with a wider audience thanks to our move to virtual platforms. Thank you for your part in making it all possible!

This 2019-2020 Annual Report recognizes and celebrates the dedicated donors, partners, and foundations that support our school and our mission of “Educating the mind, inspiring the heart. Preparing Kaua‘i’s youth to lead lives of significance.”

We also celebrate the vibrant faculty, staff, and students who live the mission each day, and we share some of their many accomplishments with you below and in this report.

Highlights from 2019-2020 include: • Concluding year 1 of the Kamehameha partnership with an increase of Native Hawaiians attending Island School beginning year 2 • Continuing our Kaua‘i Community College partnership, and working together to support one another in our Early Childhood Program • Launching The Learning Voyage (see article on page 18) • Pivoting to successful distance learning for the 4th quarter • Presenting Academic Awards via video in May • Holding a socially-distanced in-person 2020 Graduation Ceremony in June for 24 Seniors • SAT scores: 637 Reading and 640 Math • Presenting Senior Capstone presentations live, online, and open to the community: students presented their theses and projects and took questions from the audience • Presenting Sophomore Projects live and online, including student debates on a variety of local and statewide issues • 7th-9th Grades participating in National History Day around the theme of Breaking Barriers in History »» 7 students qualified to participate in the first ever Virtual State History Day with one student advancing all the way to have his work shown and judged at the National History Day Competition in Washington DC. • Two students commended by National Merit Scholars • Model UN traveling to Vancouver for International Model United Nations • Middle School winning Kaua‘i County Science Olympiad (States were canceled) • Chorus traveling to ‘Oahu for State Honor Choir • Participating in the First Tech Challenge (FTC) at the high school level

The Voyage Ahead

On June 25, 2020, Island School broke ground

on a grading project to create a new baseball field and to begin the foundation work for future expansion of our campus. Building pads for a new classroom building as well as a robotics arena were formed on the space once occupied by practice sports fields. Kumu Kauka, Island School’s Hawaiian Studies leader and Kaua‘i cultural icon, presided over the blessing of the construction site. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance at the blessing was limited. Guests enjoyed speeches from our new Head of School, Kate Conway, Board President, Kathy Richardson, Board Vice President and President of the project contractor, Cushnie Construction Company, Inc., Laura Cushnie, as well as the honorable Mayor of the County of Kaua‘i, Derek Kawakami. Beginning this project signals a major milestone in Island School’s history and brings us closer to fulfilling our long-term goals of serving a greater number of students on island, improving the quality of education and campus experience for all Voyagers, and strengthening our capabilities as a resource to the entire Kaua‘i community.

Another project to add a portable classroom building to our Middle School and High School is well underway along with minor projects in process and planning for expansion of outdoor learning and community spaces throughout campus. As Island School continues to innovate and evolve in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, we greatly appreciate the hard work and dedication of the volunteer members of our Buildings & Grounds Committee, Board of Directors, and the leadership of Board President, Kathy Richardson, and Vice President and Development Committee Chair, David W. Pratt. We owe endless gratitude to our many donors and supporters who allow Island School to continue to serve the community of Kaua‘i.

Sustainable Studies With Patrick Gegen Like many of our phenomenal faculty members, Pat Gegen first fell in love with Island School as a parent, then found his calling by joining the team as a full time teacher. After relocating to Kaua‘i from Minnesota, Pat met and married his wife Marghee who already had a daughter who was a Voyager, Dr. Chia Granda (IS ʻ94). Once their daughter Olivia (IS ‘19) reached middle school age, it seemed only natural that she too would attend Island School. “The atmosphere on campus was wonderful,” he said and it was easy to find camaraderie and care in our community. So when an opportunity presented itself to join the social studies department, Pat was eager to apply. Pat previously studied psychology and political science during his graduate and undergraduate studies where he also was a teaching assistant. Following his studies, Pat returned to Minnesota where he became a training manager for an energy company and also a certified SCUBA instructor. When Pat was finally able to relocate to Hawai‘i, he worked as a counselor at Kapa‘a Middle and Kapa‘a High School then was able to spend time caring for his family, even becoming Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) President at Kalaheo School, before coming to join the team at Island School.

Pat has taught Social Studies at the middle school and high school level here at Island School including World History, Economics, American Government, and will add Hawaiian History in the 2020-2021 school year. He also introduced the Sustainability and Global Issues course to the curriculum. “In Sustainability and Global Issues, we focus on the anthropogenic period or the most recent time period in earth’s history in which human beings started to have an impact on life as we know it on the planet.” The class looks at the various processes of human evolution including consumerism, the relationships between society, the economy, and the environment, waste management, food and water management, energy production, and global climate change. Throughout the year, Pat seeks to weave in the Native Hawaiian Culture and encourages his students to find ways to improve our current sustainability practices on campus and at home with Hawaiian resources. Through critical thinking, problem solving, and participation in class discussion, debates, and presentations, Voyagers learn how to be informed citizens of the world, participate in civic life, and become aware of current issues facing our communities.

Pat’s classes also get to experience real world application to concepts taught in the classroom.

Students actively compost on campus, using waste from the Main Hall. During the school year, students visit various on-island resources including field trips to Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) to experience the energy process, Gather Federal Credit Union to learn about an important aspect of the economy and consumer behavior, and plan to visit the Green Energy biomass facility when COVID-19 restrictions allow. The highlight of the 2019 -2020 school year for Pat was a visit to the Wailua Wastewater Treatment Plant where students were able to see the actual processing of our waste and gain understanding of the county’s efforts to reduce the discharge of raw waste water into the ground in our community. These enriching experiences differentiate the Voyager experience and encourage our students to become lifelong learners and explorers of possibilities.

In addition to the amazing resources on island that allow our students to learn from their businesses, Social Studies is in a unique position to utilize current events as course material. We are living through a series of major events in history. While the global pandemic unfolds along with a presidential election, and issues of social justice come into focus, our teachers have a wealth of material to utilize in their classrooms. In Pat’s classroom, students engage in discussions about the current interactions of county, state, and federal government entities and how they exemplify American federalism.

Voyagers explore the role of committees in the House of Representatives and the Senate, including their impact on other branches of the government like the judiciary system. Interacting with government leaders, news outlets and other forms of media, students learn how to distinguish fact from opinion and how to identify political processes, behavior, and their consequences.

When Island School transitioned to distance learning due to COVID-19, Pat, along with many teachers, was faced with the task of taking the energy and engagement from the classroom and recreate the experience in a virtual platform. Pat secured grants from a local bank as well as KIUC to help facilitate the move to distance learning. Digital course materials, virtual facilitation tools such as screencastify, and video equipment helped bring the classroom space to Voyagers’ homes. Engagement with the material was Pat’s main focus during distance learning. While our social studies department is working on recreating events like the Geography Bee and History Day, which are important co-curricular activities that enrich the Voyager Experience, teachers like Pat have sought out tools like Kahoots, which takes course material and test study questions and presents the information to students in a game format. Kahoots served as an effective learning system for middle school students and increased participation in the class. “Distance learning was an opportunity” says Pat and, like the many changes he has experienced through life, Pat has taken this opportunity to expand his skill set and find ways to inspire the hearts of our Voyagers.

“The students are the true inspiration. I am so inspired when a student comes up to me excited to share a new history fact or learning tool. I know a connection was made and that makes all the difference.”

Transitioning The Arts With Penny Nichols

Penny Nichols never intended on being an

artist, let alone a teacher of the visual arts. She was raised in Honolulu as the daughter of gallery owners who wanted nothing more than to have Penny join the family business. But growing up in the artistic tribe taught Penny two things: 1) that she was going to leave Honolulu, never to live their again, and 2) that she was never going to be an artist. So, Penny worked hard to put herself through college majoring in English with dreams of being a journalist. At 28, Penny made her first trip to Kaua‘i, and at 30 she found herself living on island as a single mother of three. Art became her therapy at first and then her livelihood. She found herself making her living just as her parents dreamed, as a freelance artist selling her works from their gallery in Honolulu and throughout Hawai‘i. Penny got into teaching art serendipitously by doing community service at the Alternative Learning Center in Anahola, teaching art to at-promise students. “It was the hardest work I have ever done, but it was a true joy and I absolutely loved it,” said Penny. She had found her true passion. For the next 10 years, Penny worked for the Department of Education in their Artists in the Schools program visiting public high schools as a guest artist alongside art teachers. She supplement this work hosting adult art workshops out of her studio.

After enrolling her youngest son in Island School, another fortuitous opportunity presented itself when former Business Manager, Mike Goto, offered Penny a parttime position teaching Art here at Island School. Eventually this part-time position turned into 21 years of joy.

“Teaching is meaningful. If you make a slight difference in another human being’s life trajectory, how amazing is that! Our job as teachers is meaningful, and interesting, and even on the worst day, I’m never bored. I am so appreciative of the deep, rewarding experience that is teaching. It is a privilege and I have become a better artist because of it.”

When COVID-19 restrictions required Island School to switch from in-person learning to a virtual format and teachers were asked to pivot their entire curriculum to distance learning, our Visual Arts department had to quickly learn how to digitize. Penny credits her success with the change to support from our technology team of Dean of Students, Nathaniel Evslin and then Technology Coordinator, Janet Powell along with the leadership of Department Head, Philip Steinbacher.

After teaching at Island School for 20 years, Penny thought she was relatively adept with technology, but nothing could have prepared her for the challenges that the 16 VOYAGER Fall 2020

corona-virus pandemic would bring. “It was the learning curve of learning curves, but Nathaniel and Janet provided support sessions and walked me through the Google tools and helped develop virtual portfolios for our middle school and high school students.” Students’ needs of technology in their daily lives turned out to be very different than what was asked of them in the distance learning format. Many students struggled to learn this language of technology, but Island School Voyagers are resilient, and their openminded approach to these new tools and the incredible work that they shared made the 12 hour days worth it for Penny.

Many of Penny’s students over the years have won awards and accolades, been featured in major publications, and she herself is an accomplished artist. She beams with pride and amazement as she speaks about the talents of Island School Voyagers.

“I learn so much from my students. They take their assignments and do things that I would never have dreamed of doing.

Reflecting on the last quarter of the year, Penny shared the blessings that distance learning brought to her teaching career. Having to create Virtual Portfolios to share their work, students are now able to share their art pieces with loved ones near and far. With creations in a digital space, works of art can last a lifetime and can be added to, re-purposed, reprinted, and revisited as many times as desired. Students are required to recreate their works of art in a digital space by photographing their pieces and editing the photos, another new teaching tool brought about by the digital conversion. Penny was also introduced to more digital art programs by her students who had difficulties with finding art supplies at home. She plans

on focusing on more digital art which is increasing in today’s art world. Digital Art has the added advantage in that it doesn’t require paper, paint, pencils, or brushes and the work isn’t very different from using traditional tools. Students are increasingly aware of the foot print they leave on the planet and are conscious of the resources they use with many preferring digital over printed ink on paper. As empowered artists, our students take pride in their virtual masterpieces and have the opportunity to enjoy them well into the future.

While many families struggled through distance learning and adjusting to working from home and increased pressure on the household bandwidth, many students were able to pivot along with our teachers. Both were able to tackle the immense task of quickly adjusting to one of the greatest changes that we have experienced in this lifetime. As many students were not able to see the final products of the works they had created during the school year, Penny filmed iMovies and provided a digital gallery to her students. Field trips that would normally be unthinkable due to distance and availability, now are a reality in the digital space. Art galleries are as close as the nearest TV or computer screen. Students who normally would not be able to pay attention to an in-person experience, seem to be able to focus better through the screen. Students missing school due to travel, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances can now be easily accommodated so as to not miss a learning opportunity. Penny has also experienced a general increase in the feeling of genuine appreciation and gratitude from her students for their teachers, for school, and for each other. “I am taking away a lot of new skills from this experience, skills that I will carry with me for the rest of my teaching career.”

Learning Voyage 2020 During the 2019-2020 school year, Island School students, faculty, and staff embarked on a new journey with an innovative program called the Learning Voyage. Dean of Students, Nathaniel Evslin, shared his insight on this new Voyager tradition.

Why Learning Voyages? Where did the idea come from?

The idea for the Learning Voyage came from a book the faculty and administration read as part of a faculty book club called “Deeper Learning” by Monica R. Martinez and Dennis McGrath. In the book, the authors discuss learning outside of school walls and different ways that schools have accomplished this. This idea really resonated with us as an Island School team, and we started to look at ways that we could implement this with our students. That was the beginning of the process that would eventually unfold as the Learning Voyage.

What does the Learning Voyage have to do with “deeper learning” and how does this relate to each of the other Island School Values?

The deeper learning competencies are: Master Core Academic Content, Think Critically and Solve Complex Problems, Work Collaboratively, Communicate Effectively, Learn How to Learn and Develop Academic Mindsets.

I think that the Learning Voyage allows our students to do all of these competencies in some form. They learned astronomy, how to program, worked together to clean and restore areas on Kaua‘i, planned trips together, and learned that learning is all part of the journey. These all touch our values of: • Personal Excellence • Dignity and Respect • Meaningful Connections • Perseverance • Purposeful Life What are the goals the Learning Voyage seek to accomplish?

The goal of the Learning Voyage is to get our students outside of the classroom and interact with our Island, State, Country and the world in ways that aren’t possible by sitting in the classroom. We were also hoping to help foster meaningful relationships among peers and between the students and the teachers. As we move forward with the Learning Voyages we would also like to incorporate more community involvement and service. We want to see these journeys as a way to give something back to the community that has given our school so much.

Describe the implementation process and major persons involved in the program design and execution.

The idea was for teachers to take the lead on planning their voyage. We didn’t want to assign something that they weren’t excited about. The teachers then worked individually or in small groups to come up with all the amazing experiences that our students were able to have. I oversaw the program and worked on logistics and sign-ups but the big part of the planning work was on the teachers to create these experiences for our students and I can’t say enough about what an amazing job the faculty did.

What can we look forward to seeing in Learning Voyages of the future?

We are still working on how we can implement the Learning Voyage in a COVID world. Once we are able to travel again, we are planning to offer a Surf and Service trip to Fiji!

What are the measures of success for the program?

For me, the measure of success is all the positive feedback from our students and teachers. I heard about amazing trips and activities where the students and faculty all really felt that connections were made. The survey data showed an overwhelming positive view on their Learning Voyage. Caring for Our Community

At the end of Spring Break in March of 2020, our Head of School announced that Island School would shift from in-

person learning to distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the remainder of the 4th quarter, our teachers and students connected virtually through online lessons, projects, presentations, conference calls, chat, and email, in hopes of safely continuing in-person learning on campus as soon as feasible. During the school closure, Island School invested in supporting the health, safety, and well-being of our ‘ohana. Deep cleaning spaces, building outdoor areas, setting up temporary outdoor spaces, and adding safety glass, creating safe routes, and other processes and procedures ensure our students, staff, faculty, and extended ‘ohana get to enjoy our campus once again. Please support our Voyager Fund, which provides funding for faculty, staff, programs, and facilities as well as our COVID-19 response which includes, but is not limited to, the following: Personal protective equipment for students and teachers Masks Temperature scanners Signage Increased covered outdoor spaces & structures Supplies to support more outdoor learning Increased technology for students and teachers Additional staffing Additional financial aid Training for flexibility and distance learning Training in promoting executive functioning, organizational skills, technology skills, and social emotional support (skills will benefit students regardless and especially in distance learning) Increased Hygiene Measures Student training on washing and sanitizing Increased janitorial procedures & cleaning supplies (especially for high-touch surfaces) Increased hand sanitizing stations Hospital grade disinfectants for classrooms Disinfecting of shared classroom equipment Physical Distancing Measures & Masks At least 3’ of physical distancing with students seated and facing forward All persons maintain 6’ of physical distancing

On February 29th 2020, Dorothy, Toto, and guests followed the Yellow Brick Road to The Emerald City for Island School’s 41st Annual Gala Auction. Tornadoes and hot air balloons landed in Oz via the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club for magical delights of food & dance & auctions, OH MY! Proceeds from the auction benefit Island School students’ Tuition Aid Fund and provide much needed enhancements to on-campus programs. Through the generosity of our sponsors, donors and attendees, this year we were able to raise $197,780 for our school. Thank you for the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and our Auction Committee who made the journey to Oz possible.
