Theme: Unique events, Sustainability & Street Culture
Location: Anywhere; varies by event
Why it matters? The GAME x GenGreen event format makes sustainability engaging, social and relevant by connecting green themes with activities young people already enjoy at GAME. What makes the format unique is that there is no fixed activity. Each event can take a different form depending on the local community, sustainability theme and GAME house. One event might combine a clothes swap and upcycling workshop, while another could use street sports, games or creative activities to explore waste, circularity or climate action. The recurring element is the GenGreen twist — taking a familiar activity and adding a green dimension.
How it works? The format starts with an existing GAME activity, event or community space. A sustainability theme is then integrated through a challenge, rule, material, workshop or story. For example, a clothes-swapping event can introduce young people to circular consumption, while an upcycling workshop allows them to repair and customise existing clothes. Other events might combine waste sorting with parkour or basketball, create sports equipment from reused materials, or use creativity to create an escape room to explore climate issues. The events can also combine several activities, such as sports, creative workshops, communal cooking and social activities. This allows young people to engage with sustainability in different ways and makes each event different.
Communication & Promotion
Events are promoted through GAME’s existing communication channels, social media and youth communities, with the focus on the specific activity rather than sustainability alone. Local partnerships can help reach new audiences and add knowledge or activities. The clothes-swapping event, for example, was developed together with The Green Youth Movement Aalborg.
Tips (Lessons learned) Create an event rather than a lesson. Sustainability can be the theme without becoming the entire focus. A clothes swap, sports challenge or creative workshop gives young people a reason to participate while the green perspective is integrated into the experience. Start with what young people already enjoy. Building on GAME’s existing sports, street culture and communities makes sustainability more accessible and relevant. Keep the format flexible. There is no single recipe. Change the activity, theme and partners from event to event to keep the format fresh and locally relevant. Make sustainability tangible. Swapping clothes, repairing an item, sorting waste or creating something from reused materials makes abstract topics easier to understand. Combine sustainability with social activities. Food, sports, creativity and informal social spaces can make sustainability part of a broader community experience. Give young people ownership. Invite young people to contribute ideas, develop activities and eventually lead parts of the events.
Cost Snapshot
Costs depend on the event and can range from small activities integrated into existing sessions to larger community events. Many 123 Anywhere St., Any City 123-456-7890 GENGREEN INITIATIVE formats require limited additional resources because they build on GAME’s existing facilities, equipment, staff and communities. Additional costs may include workshop materials, food, communication and external facilitators. Donated, second-hand and discarded materials can often be used for creative activities, helping keep costs low.
Quick Results GenGreen events provide an immediate and accessible way for the youth to engage with sustainability through social, active and creative experiences. Participants gain practical experiences with topics such as reuse, circular consumption, waste and sustainable living. A clothes swap, for example, provides a concrete alternative to buying new, while an upcycling workshop demonstrates how existing items can be given new life. Combining these activities with GAME’s existing sports and cultural activities also helps sustainability reach young people who might not otherwise seek out climate-related activities. Expected Impact short term and long term Short term: Young people gain practical knowledge and awareness of sustainability while participating in activities that are social, active and enjoyable. They experience concrete alternatives related to consumption, reuse and waste and can experiment with these ideas themselves. Long term: The ambition is to make sustainability a natural part of GAME’s youth communities. By repeatedly introducing new green themes through different activities, young people can develop greater awareness and confidence around climate action. Over time, participants can move from taking part in GenGreen events to contributing ideas and developing or leading their own activities, creating a flexible platform for continued youth-led climate action.
Testimony from Kristian
Name
“I found it super cool to help find a new owner for used clothes or to give it new life, rather than just have it collect dust in my wardrobe. Three of my least used tshirts was swapped or given away, and I got to decorate two of my most 'boring' shirts. The event helped me and the other participants reduce textile waste and find new love for old clothes”
Testimony from Claire “Organising a clothes-swapping market with GAME and GenGreen was a great experience. It sparked conversations about consumption, sustainability, and how we can make greener choices together. The positive feedback from participants motivated us to keep creating more engaging green events in the future”
