GenGreen Beach Volleyball Community Event Target Group: young adults, BAIS members, volunteers & Budapest's international community

Duration: one-day sport event

community

Theme: youth-led climate action through grassroots sport

Location: Budapest, Hungary outdoor beach volleyball courts

Why it matters? The activity showed how an accessible community sport can become a platform for youth leadership, social connection and environmental awareness. Beach volleyball brought together people from different backgrounds in a positive outdoor setting while linking everyday sport participation with the GenGreen message: young people can shape greener sport communities.

How it works? A youth-led organising team prepares the courts, equipment, teams and event flow. Participants join an inclusive beach-volleyball format designed for mixed experience levels. The GenGreen identity is visible throughout the event and creates a natural entry point for conversations about greener sport and climate action. Volunteers support registration, team coordination, photography and community engagement. Reusable sport equipment and existing BAIS resources are prioritised, helping keep the activity simple, affordable and replicable. The event closes with recognition of participants and a group moment celebrating sport, community and youth-led action.

Communication & Promotion Promotion through BAIS / We Move Budapest community channels and social media, supported by event photography and GenGreen visibility on-site. Strong visual content - action shots, group photos and the GenGreen flag - made the youth-led activity easy to share and replicate.

Tips (Lessons learned)

Keep the format simple: familiar sports lower the barrier to participation. Give young volunteers visible roles before and during the event. Use sustainability messaging in a light, practical way rather than turning the event into a lecture. Plan enough time for team formation and transitions between matches. Capture high-quality photos: they are valuable for dissemination and for inspiring other youth groups.

Cost Snapshot Low-cost grassroots format. Main cost categories: beach-court/venue rental, sport equipment, small prizes or recognition 123 Anywhere St., Any 123-456-7890 GENGREEN INITIATIVE items, refreshments and communication materials. Volunteer support andCity use of existing BAIS equipment helped keep implementation costs manageable.

Quick Results A large, diverse group of community participants took part in the beach-volleyball activity. Young volunteers gained practical experience in organising and communicating a grassroots sport event. GenGreen and BAIS visibility was integrated directly into the activity and final group moments. The event generated a strong set of reusable photos for project communication and dissemination. The format demonstrated a replicable way to combine sport, community-building and climateconscious youth engagement.

Expected Impact short term and long term Short term: stronger social connection among participants; increased confidence and ownership among young organisers; positive exposure to the GenGreen message through an enjoyable sport experience. Long term: a repeatable model for integrating environmental awareness into BAIS grassroots events; more young people encouraged to take leadership roles; and a stronger culture of sustainable, inclusive community sport in Budapest.

“Organizing our 2v2 beach volley afternoons with BAIS is so much fun! Playing on sand already feels super connected to the outdoors, you’re barefoot in the sun, diving around, and just having fun with friends. Through the GenGreen project, we really wanted to make sure we were taking care of the spot we get to play in every week. veryone knows to bring their own refillable water E bottle and snacks in reusable containers instead of grabbing tons of plastic wrappers. Most of us bike or hop on public transit to get to the courts, and we always do a quick five-minute sweep at the end to pick up any stray trash and leave the sand totally clean. hat I love most is that nobody feels like they’re W being lectured about the environment. It’s just a group of people who love volleyball, hanging out, and realizing that keeping things green and looking after our local outdoor spaces is actually super easy to do together.”
