SOUTHERN CHAPTER ISA • WINTER 2022

Message from the President Greetings fellow ISA Southern members and Happy New Year. As we turn another page and 2021 falls behind us, I wanted to encourage fellow ISA Southern members to think about those colleagues, mentors, and individuals who have impacted you and/or your career in arboriculture. I often think back to how I got to where I am in my career and those who positively impacted my career along the way. I think about the college professors who introduced me to urban forestry and offered me my first internship or my first supervisor who pushed me to become an ISA Certified Arborist. I also think about those researchers and educators who not only shared key research but were able to provide the information in ways easily understood and which could be applied to everyday tasks or projects. What about those fellow colleagues who take the extra step to make your job easier or more successful? All of us have those individuals who have positively impacted our careers, and I want to encourage you to consider taking five minutes out of your day to nominate them for an award in the field of arboriculture.

by Kasey Krouse

ISA Southern offers seven different award opportunities, including awards such as the John G. Martin Award, often awarded to a production arborist who exemplifies the backbone and soul of our profession, or the Award for Arboricultural Research for an individual or organization that has contributed information valuable to arboriculture. The list of awards and nomination form can be found here: isasouthern. org/awards. The electronic form can easily be electronically filled, edited, and emailed back to the Chapter office for consideration. ISA and most component chapters have awards for those who have impacted us and/or the industry. Even if that individual may not qualify for nomination within the Southern Chapter, reach out to another component chapter or local organization and get that person important to your career in Arboriculture recognized. I hope to see you all in March at the 2022 ISA Southern Annual Conference in Winston Salem, North Carolina, to get an opportunity to recognize that important individual who impacted you and your career in the field of arboriculture.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Laurie Reid

State: North Carolina Position: City Arborist for Charlotte Southern Chapter member for 6 years.

Primary Responsibilities Management and regulation of public trees in the City of Charlotte by ensuring the best practices of arboriculture and urban tree management are utilized; working with the Urban Forestry workgroup to develop and interpret tree ordinance regulation; and community outreach and education.

Why did you join the ISA Southern Chapter? I joined ISA Southern Chapter for networking, collaboration, and to advance my arboriculture education.

How has the ISA Southern Chapter impacted your career? I have been able to learn from and coordinate with amazing arborists and researchers to keep informed of new advances and research in the arboriculture industry.

What is your favorite thing about the Southern Chapter? I enjoy attending conferences to learn from the best in our industry!

How did you discover that the field of arboriculture was right for you? When I was the entomologist for the South Carolina Forestry Commission, I worked with Jimmy Walters (former ISA Southern Chapter president) while diagnosing entomological and pathological issues with municipal trees in several cities. When Jimmy suggested I take the ISA certified arborist exam, I didn’t know much about the arboriculture industry. After I became certified, he encouraged me to become a Certified Tree Risk Assessor through the Pacific Northwest Chapter of ISA in 2011 (before TRAQ was a qualification with ISA!). I owe so much to Jimmy for his encouragement and for leading me into the arboriculture field.

Do you have any tips or advice that you think other arborists should know? Stay curious, stay involved, ask questions, and always keep learning! There is so much to learn and so many talented arborists in the Southern Chapter. I have learned so much working with other arborists. I have been fortunate to meet and work with amazing people such as Tom Smiley (Bartlett Tree Experts); he has helped me connect with other arborists and help me to become a member of several ISA committees.

Please share an interesting fact about yourself. My work office is my library of insects, mushrooms, and tree parts that I use while teaching. I love when people bring me new things to add to my collection! PAGE 6

WRRQ comes to Southern Chapter by David Vandergriff, CoR Representative

The Southern Chapter is excited to announce that we will begin offering a new credential for certified arborists: the Wildfire Risk Reduction Qualification (WRRQ) developed by the Texas A&M Forest Service and successfully launched by the ISA Texas Chapter. The credential materials are now being shared with other ISA chapters that will offer this additional tool for arborists to provide expert services for clients who live in areas threatened by wildfire. The credential combines the expertise employed by wildland fire specialists and certified arborists. Watch for training dates to be announced by the Southern Chapter soon. The WRRQ credential will address the impacts of climate extremes and a growing number of people choosing to live in suburban wooded areas, the wildland urban interface, and forested rural areas. These areas have fewer resources available such as full-time fire departments, fire hydrants, and credentialed arborists, making proactive risk management a high priority. The USDA Forest Service and the Southern Group of State Foresters, through a Landscape Scale Restoration (LSR) grant, provided funding for expansion to all their 13 states for WRRQ beta training. These states are located in the ISA Midwest, Southern, Florida, MidAtlantic, Kentucky, and Georgia Arborist Association chapters, with Southern having the largest number of states.

The Southern Chapter recently hosted a beta course in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, that included Chapter board members, Tennessee fire officials, and a few local arborists. The purpose of this dry run was to solicit input from state officials and arborists about the content and logistics of the credential. It was an honor for us to launch this effort in Southern Chapter with lead trainer Kari Hines and Buster Robinson from Texas A&M Forest Service. Participants were from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry, credentialed arborists from private companies, University of Tennessee AgResearch, and Herbert College of Agriculture. Attendees representing Southern Chapter included Executive Director Skip Kincaid; President Kasey Krouse; Vice President Matthew Searels; President Elect Jeff Morgan; CoR Representative David Vandergriff; State Directors Sarah Hollar and Christian Torres Santana; and ISASC members Jimmy Walters and Tom Simpson. Next steps include identifying partnership opportunities with state forestry professionals and partners in additional Southern Chapter states, with North Carolina already underway. Revisions to the participant handbook and educational materials are in progress to remove the remaining Texas-specific Continued on page 12

NW Arkansas tree initiatives

by Patti Erwin, Arkansas Director As part of its efforts to increase and enrich the region’s tree canopy, the Walton Family Foundation provided more than $1.3 million to plant 1,239 new trees and gave away 5,375 trees to northwest Arkansas residents in 2021. Since 2015, the Foundation has provided more than 23,000 trees. Carroll Electric was honored to collaborate with the Walton Family Foundation and a few of the cities during their recent tree giveaway events. Carroll Electric’s crews assisted the cities of Gravette, Lowell, and Bella Vista with loading of trees for their residents. There were a total of 13 communities participating. Each crew also had at least one certified arborist present who could answer questions from residents about planting or the general care of the trees, including the risks created when trees grow too close to power lines. The Cooperative is hoping to assist other cities with their tree giveaways in the future. Community commitment is just one of the many principles embraced by Carroll Electric Cooperative’s mission. Mississippi report

WRRQ

Professional Arborist Association of MS (PAAM) is holding its annual meeting in late January. News from the organization includes the election of Stephen Grado, professor of forestry at Mississippi State University, to the office of president for 2022. PAAM recently produced 10 new videos highlighting arborists and their work in MS. These videos were sponsored by the MS Forestry Commission through an urban and community forestry grant.

information and replace with Southern Chapter information. Instructors will be identified and trained to present the qualification workshops, which will be offered following the completion of these and other tasks. The Wildfire Risk Reduction Qualification is based on the same structural details of the existing Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ). Participants must be Certified Arborists and will attend a twoday training including a written and field-assessment test that must be completed satisfactorily to earn the qualification. Requalification will take place every five years, with credential holders attending a short review and re-testing session. Why should you consider adding this credential to your professional resume? Differentiating yourself from peers, displaying competence in a broader area of practice, opening the door to new customers, and professional development, just to name a few reasons. The interest in being informed and managing risk is a growing trend in our industry, and wildfire risk reduction can be a valuable addition to your business. If you have any questions or would like more information, please reach out to any of your board member participants or your state director.

Planting on private property in Nashville by Meg Morgan, Cumberland River Compact

It’s no secret that cities across the country are losing trees. The Root Nashville campaign, led by the nonprofit the Cumberland River Compact and the City of Nashville, seeks to restore the canopy in Nashville, Tennessee, by planting 500,000 trees by 2050. Root Nashville is unique in that it is structured as a public-private campaign, with dayto-day operations headquartered at a nonprofit working together with

PAGE 14

SOUTHERN CHAPTER ISA • WINTER 2022

our local government. Nashville’s water department, Metro Water Services, acts as the lead government partner of Root Nashville. Launched in October 2018, now more than 20,000 trees have been planted by campaign leads and additional planting partners. No matter who plants the trees, they can all count towards the citywide goal. Replanting efforts are often focused on public property, but much of Nashville’s urban canopy loss is taking place on private property. We quickly realized that efforts would need to target private property in order to meet the Root Nashville campaign goal; then, a tornado and derecho in 2020 made the need even more urgent. In support of the Root Nashville campaign, the Cumberland River Compact, as the “private” side of the public-private partnership, created the Neighborhood Planting Captain program. In this program, interested community members apply to become a Neighborhood Planting Captain, and if accepted they are awarded approximately 50 1-1.5”-caliper trees for their neighborhood, 100% free. The planting captains’ job is to spread the word about this opportunity to their neighbors – by knocking on doors, sharing flyers, posting in neighborhood Facebook groups or NextDoor, or whatever grassroots method works best for their community. We tell our captains that they don’t need to be tree experts; they just need to be enthusiastic and willing to talk to their neighbors. Once the trees are claimed, the Cumberland River Compact delivers them directly to the tree recipients’ yards. The Cumberland River Compact has worked with four cohorts of Neighborhood Planting Captains so far, getting 2,000 trees in the ground each planting season. And what have we learned along the way? We can resoundingly report that efforts are significantly more successful with a planting captain leading outreach for their own communities, as trusted and known individuals in their neighborhoods. In terms of species, the understory, smaller trees almost always get claimed first and sometimes the larger canopy choices are a tougher sell – especially the oaks, unfortunately! Our Neighborhood Planting Captains also tell us that some neighbors are a bit skeptical about the opportunity, but then when the large trees start arriving on their block, the opportunity becomes more real. (We add these lateadopters to a waitlist.) In order to bring more trees into residential yards, these key questions popped up repeatedly: What exactly do people love about trees? And what are the top barriers to accepting them? As a capstone project for an Urban Forestry Graduate Certificate at Oregon State University, a program led by Dr. Paul Ries, Dr. Ries and I conducted research on this topic. We hope to publish this research in an academic journal, to inform future efforts.

News from Louisiana by Hallie Dozier, Louisiana State Director

Happy New Year from Louisiana! Last fall, I opened “News from Louisiana” with a hearty welcome to cooler and drier conditions, but that really hasn’t manifested. Other than a short cold snap or two, warmer and moister conditions have dominated for this Louisiana “winter,” keeping the mosquitoes happy and the firewood unburned. Unseasonably warm weather did not keep us from finishing up the 2021 LSU AgCenter Arborist CEU programs and getting the 2022 calendar published. The scramble to sort out how to best serve our audiences has settled down to a less-bumpy and more familiar ride for education providers and arborists alike. In 2021, the LSU AgCenter offered 19 separate in-person CEU events for the Louisiana Arborist License and ISA Certification. We also offered nine virtual classes – trying different delivery formats including day-long online events and multi-session evening classes to give arborists ample opportunity to earn state-required 6.5 content hours to meet CEU obligations. Whew! But, given hurricanes and COVID, it’s a good thing we had such a full calendar; between climate- and public health-related disasters, we needed every opportunity we had. As it turns out, we seated 582 people over the course of the year and expect to seat even more in 2022. We will continue to offer high-quality pre-recorded content online and in person during the first half of 2022. These programs include storm recovery sawing (produced by North American Training Solutions) and a program called “Field Encounters” that covers everything from invasive species to managing urban trees for wildlife. We expect to return to having live presentations later in 2022 (that we will concurrently stream to virtual audiences), beginning in August with a program on tree risk evaluation and management. Should COVID or Mother Nature once again make offering live presentations difficult, we are ready to get those presentations filmed for presentation flexibility. The 2022 program calendar has 12 opportunities for CEUs. A few sessions will be online-only and some will be in-persononly (depending on wifi coverage), with the balance of the dates offering either/or options. Please visit www.lsuagcenter.com/arborist for programs and schedule updates. Classes are open to anyone, and the registration is $140/$100 (early). On a final note, I have thrown my hat in the ring for the Southern Chapter ISA executive board, and I will step-down from my role as Louisiana State Director this spring. We have excellent candidates vying to fill the State Director position ... so, please VOTE!
