SOUTHERN CHAPTER ISA • SPRING 2021

Message from the President The Southern Chapter 2021 Conference and Tradeshow are off to a great start! Thanks to everyone who joined us during the first day of the fourday conference during each week of April (more information here). We enjoyed some outstanding presentations, including an excellent interview between our Executive Director Skip Kinkaid and Chuck “Treeman” Leavell. Mr. Leavell –famous for playing with the Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and others– highlighted his respect for arborists and their role in caring for trees. You can watch a trailer of Mr. Leavell’s video, The Tree Man, by clicking here. As we head into the summer, you will be seeing some changes in Southern Chapter. We will have some new enthusiastic board members who will offer great ideas on fully realizing our strategic plan which was completed in early 2021. Based on their ideas, we will begin implementing activities to address members services, advocacy for the profession, engagement with professionals and the public, educational opportunities, and the organizational health of the Chapter. Your input in the 2020 survey was crucial to addressing these issues.

by Jason Gordon

We’ll also get a new slate of officers on the Executive Committee. As I become Past President, Kasey Krouse, city forester from Knoxville, TN, will move into the president position. Kasey has been active in Southern Chapter for several years, he cares deeply about the Chapter, and I can assure you that he will excel as president. He’ll work closely with Skip and the rest of the Board to operationalize our strategic plan. Our upcoming elections will determine the other new officers and board members, so please make your voice heard and vote when the ballot is distributed shortly after the Annual Conference. The rest of 2021 is full of educational opportunities. We have several TRAQ courses coming up as well as collaborations with state and local partners. These opportunities and other activities in the strategic plan depend on partnerships which are vital to any profession’s strength and long-term sustainability. As Benjamin Franklin said, “We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.” Southern Chapter and the rest of the tree-care community have a great future ahead when we work together towards that future. Two final reminders. Please pass along word of the Chapter’s scholarship. The application is currently available on our website. Also, please send in your newsletter articles to newsletter@ isasouthern.org. Don’t worry too much about your writing skills; our amazing editor Sarah Mitchell will make it look great! As always, stay safe and healthy.

Southern Chapter Update & Report by Skip Kincaid, Southern Chapter Executive Director

ISA

S UTHERN

Spring is beginning to bust out all over. Everyone loves to see nature wake up and provide an awesome display. But soon enough we will be wondering how we get through these summer temperatures! As we begin to see an uptick in the time we spend outdoors, I’m hopeful that you will keep safety paramount and continue to develop a culture of safety in your days. Speaking of safety … I also hope that you’ve had a chance to enjoy the informative Tuesday mornings in April that have been presented as part of the Southern Chapter Conference and Trade Show. Albeit a virtual event, we’re excited to bring you the great information and entertainment that our annual conferences provide. Believe it or not, we are already underway with plans for next year’s event and beyond. If we continue to see the COVID situation improve, we are very hopeful to have a live event next March 2022. What a great time it will be to see everyone and share our stories! We’ll announce the location soon, as we are in the final stages of securing the convention and hotel space. Some groups are already holding live events and I encourage you to take part in those while keeping everyone’s safety in mind. As always, you can check out a full list of live and virtual events here in the newsletter, and on the Chapter website. The BiWeekly Branch continues to have a strong following and you can also see a current list of events there as well.

Wood with a Purpose

by Michael P. Murphy, BCMA, NJ-0146B In the course of every arborist’s career, there will be many instances where they will stand in awe at the inner beauty of a tree that they are removing or otherwise working on. That arborist might wonder whether something productive could be done with the wood beyond just turning it into firewood. Many a winter splitting wood in New Jersey I felt those same feelings and it was there that seeds of my present pastime of woodturning on a lathe were sown. Woodturning is a small-scale version of truly diverting large amounts of wood from the landfill or firewood pile and repurposing it into usable furniture. On one hand, it does not have as much of a sustainable footprint but, on the other hand, it presents a unique opportunity to better personalize the items made. More than repurposing wood, it is creating wood with a purpose. I ran Preservation Tree Care, Inc., here in Beaufort, SC, for 16 years. During that time, we would often need to remove a tree that held great sentimental value to the owners. One day, we were approached by a local bowl turner who asked us to drop off some chunks of interesting or distinctive wood from trees that we might be taking down. I immediately recognized this as an opportunity to somewhat appease a grieving tree owner by having a bowl made for them so that they could always have a part of their tree with them. The people loved it. Every time we did it, it turned in into an emotional and sometimes tearful handoff. The woodturner eventually moved away and that is when I bought my first lathe. I have been mesmerized by the craft ever since. Now retired from the commercial field, I try to turn pieces that have a special meaning or backstory. I’d like you all to check out my website, not so much to promote my bowls but more so to share with you some of beauty that I have found in different wood species as well as showcasing the backstories associated with some of the more prominent ones. In his book, The Man Who Made Things Out of Wood, Robert Penn wrote, “The pleasure that we take from things made from natural materials is an extension of the pleasure that we take from nature itself.” All arborists have felt that pleasure during their professions. These repurposing crafts are a way of expanding and enhancing that pleasure beyond your career. PAGE 6

ANY DEVICE. ANY WORKFLOW. Clearion’s field software provides functionality for arborists, inspectors, designers, planners, and auditors to build and manage detailed work plans and seamlessly communicate with crews. “Using the new mobile vegetation management system has increased the accuracy of the information captured on-site and reduced the amount of data entry for WEL Network’s vegetation crews. We’re able to create detailed work plans, automate maintenance cycles, issue electronic work orders, track post-work inspections, and re-work, calculate estimated and actual costs, and manage schedules and budgets,” says WEL Network’s Field Delivery Manager Mark Keller.

What do you enjoy most about being part of Southern Chapter?

I am a second-generation owner. My father was co-founder of our company in 1948. I had a passion to be in this industry and, more specifically, I wanted to own our company. This was my dream from my childhood.

I have been a member since I became certified 2003. I have met many of my colleagues over the years through Southern ISA, ISA, and other industry associations, and these relationships have been very valuable to me and my career. I can always count on the people in the Southern Chapter and others to be there for me with an answer for a challenging situation or guidance when needed. The comradery has been a constant throughout my professional career and there is comfort knowing that there is group of professionals always present and ready to assist. What is an interesting fact about you that others may not know?

My husband and I co authored the book, Don’t Be A Cow!. It is a fun metaphor about following your path and not following the herd to find your own path to happiness. It is all about being who you are. It was fun writing it together. Our hope is to help people discover their true potential and to live a more successful and fulfilling life. How did you become interested in trees/tree work industry?

My first industry position was City Horticulturist at the City of Opelika. I quickly began to understand that all the City’s trees came under my care as well as landscaping, right of way maintenance, and beautification. I became enamored with all things “trees”! I saw the benefit that trees provide to us all and especially in a city setting … from the human health perspective to the many environmental benefits they provide us. Trees must be managed. Through my experience in Public Works and storm response, I became more and more interested in how to manage trees to limit risk to the public and property, all the while creating a robust and healthy urban canopy. My interest has grown and changed over the years. Trees provide us with a sense of permanence and a sense of place. I like to be a part of ensuring they are managed and cared for. How have things changed since you started in the industry?

There are more and more women in the industry. I am happy to see it. When I started, there were not many of us around. Now when I am at a conference (when we are at conferences face-to-face!), I see many in the audience like me. It is comforting to know that our industry welcomes a diverse perspective and diversity in the workplace. I have always felt at home in our industry. PAGE 8

What do you enjoy most about being part of Southern Chapter?

How did you become interested in trees/tree work industry?

What is an interesting fact about you that others may not know?

My wife and I have developed a great interest in camping and hiking. We are traveling to parks as often as possible, especially the ones with great hiking trails. How have things changed since you started in the industry?

- Chainsaws are lighter and stronger. - I climbed on grass rope for several years before synthetic fibers were introduced. - Rigging systems are more complex and efficient. - Safety awareness is 100 times greater. - Th e caliber of individuals interested in the industry has changed from the chain smoker to the college graduate. - Lifts take an employee to much greater heights. - Th e average productive life of a climber has increased by twenty percent due to the increase in technology, safety, gear design, and more. - Th e climbers gear is more ergonomic than what was used forty years ago. -C hippers eat more wood today in thirty seconds than chippers could eat in two minutes.

Regional Plant Appraisal Committee by David Vandergriff, Southern Chapter CoR Representative

The Southern Chapter is looking for regional professionals to serve on the Regional Plant Appraisal Committee (RPAC). This committee is tasked with developing a Regional Plant Appraisal Guide which will supplement the Guide for Plant Appraisal 10th Edition, 2019. This committee has been long recommended to provide guidance for plant appraisers and other professionals, applicable to specific regions. The last Tree Species Rating Guide was published by Southern Chapter in 2005. The Regional Guide is no longer just a “Species Rating” publication, and will be developed with broader information including: n

n

n

Identification of the largest nursery grown tree (LCANT) size and its cost;

S pecies characteristics information for depreciation Functional Limitations; and S pecies rating numbers for iTree and applications that use the 9th Edition formulas (optional).

Keeping NC Communities Green by Leslie Moorman, North Carolina Director

As North Carolina continues to develop and urbanize, many of our communities struggle to find ways to plant trees to maintain a green urban canopy. With tightened city budgets, many communities don’t have a budget for planting trees and depend on donations, grants, and grassroots organizations in their community. The NC Urban Forest Council is trying to answer that need through their Legacy Tree Fund Program. The program, 100% funded by donations and grants, focuses on projects with an outreach component that engages the local community where the trees are being planted. The LTF program was created in 2010. Over the years and with the help of the NC Forest Service’s Urban & Community Forestry Program, the Legacy Tree Fund has funded 28 tree planting projects across the state, helping to plant more than 8,300 trees. With the 2021 grant cycle open until mid-May, the program has set its sights on reaching a goal of planting 10,000 trees. The Legacy Tree Fund Program has worked with group such as the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees, the City of Shelby, and Greenville ReLeaf. The groups, with the help of the neighboring communities, have planted trees along streets, around schools, and in parks where trees were noticeably absent. Those trees will create shade, allowing for more comfortable outdoor activity during our hot summers. With some additional funding from the Duke Energy Foundation, the program has also started to assist communities with storm-recovery planting efforts. When Hurricanes Florence and Michael whipped through North Carolina back in 2018, many communities suffered from significant tree loss due to high winds and flooding. Trees play a critical role in buffering the impact of storm events, so it is important to keep trees in our coastal communities. The NC Legacy Tree Fund Program is accepting applications for planting projects until May 14. If you are interested is supporting this program, please contact Leslie Moorman.
