Our Editorial 8th March By Carla Last week, the world stopped for a good reason. Women of different religions, ways of thinking, races, etc. join for demand their rights. Those that they had never had. During the history, women had been silenced, maybe because their husbands or parents did not want them to be better than they were or just maybe because they were only women. Only a few women could be remembered. It is the case of Olypme de Gouges who wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen or Marie Curie who was the first woman that won a Nobel Prize. You may not realise about this, but I think that during your life, either you are a man or a woman, you have seen any inequality or any kind of machismo. And that is because we live in a society where women haven’t got the same fundamental rights as men. There are a lot of arguments for defending feminism. Because I think that women want to put up with the injustices which surround us. Because they want to wake up every day, without fear. Without fear to sexual harassment. Without fear to be killed. Because they don’t want to be one of the 44 women killed last year in our country by men. Because they don’t want to increase that list. Because they don’t want to be silenced. Because they want to be respected. Because they want to be women without fear. And more or less, that is feminism. The fight of women to achieve the equality between men and women. When 8th March was getting closer, I heard a lot of people saying that that day was a completely silly thing. That those inequalities don’t really exist. But the figures don’t tell the same. Men earn 14,2% more than women; this is known as wage gap. Since 2003, more than 900 women have been killed victims of gender violence. 66% of the companies don’t have any director (woman) and women continue being a minority in management positions… All these data have made feminist associations called a general strike. The main was to show that if women stop, the world will stop. And the result was completely successful. According to some unions, 6 million of people stopped their work to join the strike. The next day, the newspapers of the most important cities of the world said that in Spain, something huge had happened. And I agree with them. How women from small villages to big cities joined was the evidence of the power of women.
On 8th March 2018, women started something that surely would change the world.
