Your natural swimming pool seasonal maintenance checklist
Every pool is different. Use this guide as a starting point and adapt the advice to your local climate and the exact needs of your pool. Regular temperature checks and water quality tests will help you get it right.
Spring
• Add bacteria to the biological part of the filter system if the water temperature is above 10 °C
• Get your pool running again: restart pumps and filtration systems
• Switch on UV clarifier
• Clean equipment and replace filter media and UV bulbs.
• Scoop out debris
• Use a pond vacuum to remove sludge
• Thoroughly clean pond walls (approximately every 5 years)
• Add new aquatic plants (if needed)
• Weed, prune, and re-pot existing pond plants
• Check water parameters
Summer
• Run features (e.g. waterfalls, fountains)
• Increase UV clarifier and/or filter capacity if necessary
• Remove string algae and blanket weed manually as needed – balanced water and low phosphates minimise growth, but some filamentous algae in shallow or sunlit areas is normal
Autumn
• Clear out sludge, skim debris, vacuum bottom of pool and plant zone, and cut back water plants
• Arrange professional deep clean and service if needed
• Remove fallen leaves from the water surface every day
• Check water parameters
• Empty skimmers daily
• Check water levels and top up if needed
• Empty out pond skimmers every day
• Remove all dead plant material from water
• Switch off water features (e.g. fountains) ready for winter storage
Winter
• Consider putting features and removable equipment into storage
• Add an ice preventer or floating heater to maintain a small opening in the ice (so gases can escape)
• Remove dead plant matter
