A garden pond needs care and attention all year round.

Without the right maintenance, algae can spread, water quality can decline, and the health of your fish can suffer. But one simple thing can help you stay on top of it: a handy pond care calendar like this one.

With this season-to-season calendar, you have a straightforward checklist for looking after a garden pond with plants and a few fish.

Spring garden pond care - March, April, May In springtime, as your pond is just waking up for the year, you’ll need to…

• Check and service the pump and filter. How you run your equipment over winter comes down to your pond and your preference - many pond keepers leave the pump and filter running all year, while others switch them off until spring. Either way, early spring is the time to get everything checked and ready for the season. Service the pump, replace or refresh the filter media, and change the UV bulb if your clarifier uses one. Run the system, confirm it’s working properly, and check the flow is right for your pond.

• Inspect the liner and edging for frost damage.

If winter frosts damaged your pond liner or any of your edging, now is the time to get it fixed.

Look for any signs of holes or deterioration.

• Remove any covers, nets, and debris. It’s time to let the sun reach the surface of the water again.

Remove the winter net or cover if you used one, and scoop any debris from the surface using a net or stick. A pond skimmer can help you out here.

• Get gardening. Marginal and submerged plants in your pond are getting ready to grow and bloom again. Now’s the time to add new foliage, trim the old growth, and divide any plants that have spread a little too much.

• Rebalance the water after winter. A winter of rainfall can dilute your pond and lower its carbonate hardness (kH), which keeps pH stable.

• Start tackling algae early. As soon as even slightly warmer weather arrives, so does algae. Treating the pond with a phosphate-binding treatment such as PhosLess Direct removes the nutrients algae feed on, which can reduce or remove the need for algae-killing treatments later. Keep removing blanket weed as soon as it appears, and keep checking the water’s chemistry and temperature.

Summer garden pond care - June, July, August Summertime is when your pond is at its most active. There’s a lot to keep on top of this season, including the following…

• Monitor the water level. Hot weather, active fish, and thirsty wildlife all work to reduce the water level in your pond. Stay vigilant and top the water up whenever necessary.

• Give your fish a feast. Your fish are busy, and they need food to fuel their activity - so give them their maximum amount of food, and maybe even a few nutrient-rich treats.

• Treat algae and blanket weed. Peak pond season means peak algae season.

Use treatments when it starts to get out of hand, check your filter and UV clarifier are running at their best, and keep physically removing blanket weed as often as needed.

• Look out for predators. It isn’t just fish that are active in the summer. If animals like herons, foxes, and neighborhood cats are on the prowl, consider a net cover for your pond, or other deterrents such as decoys and kites.

• Check the oxygen levels. If you see fish gulping at the surface, your pond’s oxygenation is too low.

Fix it by increasing the pump flow and making sure the surface isn’t completely covered by plants. You can also install an aerator, bubbler, or fountain for more movement.

Autumn garden pond care - September, October, November Your garden starts to slow down in autumn, so you’ll need to…

• Net the pond to catch leaves. If the pond is especially close to a tree, be sure to remove leaf fall regularly with a net. You can also install a skimmer to handle small debris.

• Cut back dying marginal plants. Any plants that are done for the year need to be clipped or removed. But make sure to leave some stems - this supports friendly local wildlife such as overwintering insects, and may allow for growth next year too.

• Reduce the fish feast. Fish activity is slowing, and so should their diet. Cut down on how much food you give them, reducing it a little every week. If too much stays uneaten on the surface, reduce it even more.

• Service and adjust your filter. Once the weather cools, it’s time to start switching to a winter routine. Give the filter a clean and reduce the flow on the pump and filter to suit the season. If you installed an aerator for the summer, it’s now safe to switch it off.

• Consider a pond heater or ice preventer.

Winter garden pond care - December, January, February In winter, your pond is largely dormant, but there’s still a little maintenance in order…

• Otherwise, let it be. Beyond the above, the best thing to do with your pond in winter is simply to leave it alone. There’s no need to scrub the walls, treat algae, top up the water, or deep-clean the filter while things are at their most dormant.

Year-round pond care There are a few pond maintenance tasks you’ll need to perform regardless of the season.

They include the following…

• Test the water quality. Check the temperature, and use test strips to check pH, ammonia, and nitrite levels. If something is off, add a treatment or adjust your equipment. Testing the water is recommended at least once a month.

• Perform water changes. Depending on the type of pond, keep the water fresh by removing and replacing around a quarter of the total volume, once every month or two. Never fully drain and refill the whole pond, as this can be harmful.

• Keep a pond diary. A record of your pond care and observations can be invaluable in the years to come. Note how your pond behaves throughout the year, which treatments worked best, how much food your fish are eating, the most effective flow setting on your filter anything that will help you understand how to look after your pond year after year.
