O jardim em frente à Biblioteca é um local apetecível para usufruir e relaxar e tem albergado exposições que permitem estender, para o exterior, o espaço expositivo interior, criando uma ainda maior proximidade com o campus e a comunidade.

“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.“ (Genesis 2:7) The garden in front of the library is a pleasant place to take a break and relax, and has been hosting exhibits that allow the extension, to the outside, of the exhibition space inside, creating an even greater proximity to the campus and the community. 

A exposição intitulada objeto : terra, conduzida por Isabelle Catucci, apresenta a terra como objeto interrogativo, reunindo, neste espaço, blocos em terra crua que servem de suporte e enquadramento a peças de cerâmica e intervenções múltiplas.

A natureza é um contínuo circular que não tem princípio nem fim. Neste contexto e num figurado bíblico, a presença do homem — ser criado do pó da terra e insuflado de forças anímicas— representa um acontecimento efémero.

A terra como objeto, e como Isabelle Catucci tão bem explica, é um elemento de suporte omnipresente que quase passa despercebido, mas que exige uma reflexão, enquanto material e conceito que interage diariamente com (e no) ecossistema, numa coexistência com a arte, a ciência, a vida... 

The exhibit entitled object : earth, conducted by Isabelle Catucci, presents the earth as an interrogative object, gathering, in this space, blocks of raw earth that serve as a support and a frame for ceramic pieces and multiple interventions.

Nature is a cyclical continuum without beginning or end. In this context, and with a biblical image, the presence of man — being created from the dust of the ground and infused with a soul — represents an ephemeral event.

The earth, as an object, as it is so well explained

by Isabelle Catucci, is an omnipresent element of support that almost goes unnoticed, but requires a reflection, while material and concept that routinely interacts with (and in) the ecosystem, in coexistence with art, science and life…

O tema de investigação de Isabelle Catucci, a preparar um doutoramento em escultura na Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, integra esta exposição como “uma parte experimental” de todo o corpo teórico em desenvolvimento, questionando a apreciação e a perenidade da matéria inerte, conectando-a com conceitos de linguagem, emoção e forma.

Isabelle Catucci’s topic of investigation integrates this exhibit as an “experimental part” of the whole body of theory in development in her ongoing PhD in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, questioning the appreciation and perpetuity of the inert matter, connecting it to concepts of language, emotion and form.

A exposição junta um percurso e uma instalação central, composta por quatro púlpitos em terra crua, que é um verdadeiro átrio para nos sentarmos e refletirmos sobre o objeto (terra).

The exhibit consists of a course and a central installation, constituted of four pulpits of raw earth, which is a true atrium for us to sit down and reflect upon the object (earth).

“Objecto : Terra” é uma expressão intrigante, pois não esclarece de modo imediato a correlação existente entre os dois termos.

Comecemos por objecto. Do latim objectus*, que significa “acção de pôr diante, oposição, barreira, obstáculo, coisa que se oferece aos olhares”, objecto designa comumente uma “coisa”, pode também expressar a ideia de assunto ou matéria de algo, fim ou escopo, e, ainda, definir-se por uma relação com um sujeito, normalmente sob a forma de exterioridade.

Terra, por sua vez, é uma matéria natural 

“Object : Earth” is an intriguing expression, as it doesn’t immediately clarify the correlation between the two terms.

Let’s start with object.

From the Latin word objectus*, meaning “put in front of, before, towards; opposition, barrier, obstacle; what offers itself to be seen”, object commonly designates a “thing”, and also expresses the idea of topic or matter, scope or goal, and establishes a relation with subject, usually in the form of exteriority.

Earth, in turn, is a natural matter 

(neste caso, matéria para esculturas), mas também o nome de um planeta, o nosso planeta, o lugar onde o homem surgiu enquanto espécie, num processo no qual o acto de inumar, isto é, de introduzir o corpo morto no interior da terra, foi fundamental.

(in this case, material for sculptures), but also the name of a planet, our planet, the place where we appeared as a species, in a process in which the act of inhuming, that is, burying the dead bodies in the earth, was fundamental.

O planeta Terra é o lugar onde o humano, feito de terra (húmus, terra húmida e arável que faz ressoar a origem da palavra homem), e os demais seres nascem, vivem e morrem. A noção de terra tem, por isso, um alcance muito amplo pois liga-se a todos os domínios instituídos pelo humano.

São exemplos disso as esferas da política, em que o território é um aspecto central, do social, no qual se pode pensar a propriedade; a esfera económica se a tomarmos como recurso, passando pela elaboração do pensamento filosófico, antropológico, científico e artístico. No extremo, a ligação entre o homem e a terra , coincide com o próprio limite do humano, 

Planet Earth is the place where humans, made of earth (humus, humid and arable earth, which resembles the origin of the word human), and the other beings are born, live and die.

Thus, the notion of earth has a much wider reach, as it is linked to all the domains instituted by the human. Examples of this are the spheres of the politics, where territory is a central aspect, the social, where property can be considered, the economic, if it is seen as resource, going through the elaboration of the philosophical, anthropological, scientific and artistic thought.

Ultimately, the link between man and the earth coincides with the human limit itself, 

pois o homem pertence à terra, a ela regressa quando morre, e com ela partilha a fertilidade e a plasticidade que lhe são próprias.

A terra é um conceito diverso e múltiplo, difícil de definir na sua amplitude, mas um dos objectivos de Isabelle é precisamente delinear os contornos pluridisciplinares desse termo.

Tentando antecipar leituras possíveis entre o objecto e a terra de Isabelle Catucci, é possível entender que terra é o objecto, o assunto ou tema essencial do seu trabalho.

Enquanto objecto, a terra é uma coisa, mas mais do que algo que se justapõe ou se opõe a um sujeito, é antes algo que propõe uma problematização filosófica e antropológica do estatuto do objecto, como algo externo e distinto do homem, que toca necessariamente na funesta e suposta separação entre homem e natureza.

A questão do objecto: terra também aponta para a questão da objectualidade da arte, sem tomar uma posição definitiva, pois nem o objecto nem a sua desmaterialização são descartados. O objecto é a 

Earth is a diverse and multiple concept, hard to be defined in its vastness, but it is one of Isabelle’s goals to precisely outline this multidisciplinary term.

Attempting to anticipate Isabelle’s possible readings between the object and the earth, it can be understood that the earth is the object, the topic, the essential matter of her work. As an object, the earth is a thing, but more than something that juxtaposes or opposes to a subject, it proposes a philosophic and anthropologic problematization of the status of the object as something external and distinct of man, which touches the supposed and dismal separation between man and nature.

The matter of the object : earth also points to the question of objectuality in art, without taking a definitive position, as neither the object or its dematerialization are disregarded. The object is



forma visível do pensamento e da sensibilidade, e, feito de terra, carrega consigo o indício da transitoriedade, que é um dado incorporado e assumido, uma vez que a terra volta à terra.

No que diz respeito à exposição no jardim em frente à Biblioteca da Faculdade de Ciência e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, a terra assume dois lugares distintos. Por um lado, toma a forma de suportes instáveis, friáveis, que com a sua imponência elevam placas, azulejos e esculturas/livros em cerâmica cuja linguagem traz à tona mapas e marcas de um território vivo, duplamente resistente e frágil. 

the visible form of thought and sensibility, and, made of earth, it carries the trace of transience that is an incorporated and given fact, once the earth returns to the earth.

Concerning the exhibit at the garden in front of the NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) library, the earth takes two distinct places. On the one hand it takes the shape of instable, frail supports which, with their size, elevate plates, tiles and sculptures/books in ceramics, whose language brings forth maps and marks of a living territory, both resistant and fragile.



Estes elementos, assentes sobre volumes prismáticos de terra comprimida, estão sedentos de proximidade e envolvimento dos espectadores, necessariamente activos, e que façam uso do toque e sintam a terra nas suas mãos. De outro modo, a terra, sob a forma de quatro púlpitos, assume o lugar de uma assembleia que suscita o debate político de intervenção no mundo.

Nesta obra, o corpo do espectador é convocado para um plenário onde a terra é tema central e essencial, pois, como Isabelle Catucci parece dizer, esse debate não pode deixar de se fazer. 

These elements, placed on prismatic volumes of rammed earth, are eager for proximity and involvement of the spectators, necessarily active, for them to use the touch and feel the earth with their hands. On the other hand, the earth, in the shape of four pulpits, takes the place of a conference that evokes the political debate of intervention in the world. In this work, the body of the spectator is called upon to a meeting where the earth is the central and essential topic, as Isabelle Catucci would say, this debate can’t be left undone. 

Reunirmo-nos perante a terra e tendo a terra como objecto do qual fazemos parte e no qual estamos implicados, é pensar a humanidade naquilo que tem de mais humilde e impetuoso é fazer um exercício que exige um esforço para reestabelecer uma relação de equilíbrio e sustentabilidade face à natureza e a todos os seres, humanos ou não humanos. O trabalho de Isabelle convida-nos precisamente a essa reflexão inesgotável, tão urgente quanto necessária.

Meeting before the earth and having the earth as the object that we integrate and in which we are involved is to think of most humble and impetuous aspect, to make an effort to reestablish the balance and sustainability towards nature and all beings, human or not human.

Isabelle’s work invites us precisely to this endless reflection, as urgent as it is necessary.

Palavras e sensações derivadas das observações sobre o conceito terra.

A terra é objeto de desejo, exploração e domínio, no entanto, permeia nossa percepção de mundo, compõe nosso vocabulário.

A Terra em sua faceta planetária ecossistêmica retoma a ação do sujeito, sem com isto, aterrar-nos a voz e o interesse em tomar parte.

Words and sensations derived from the observations about the concept earth.

The earth is an object of desire, exploration and dominance, though it permeates our perception of the world and constitutes our vocabulary.

Earth, in its planetary, ecosystemic facet, resumes the action of the subject, without smothering our voice and the interest in taking part.

The exhibit object : earth requires a reading of reciprocity, inversions 

sões e sobreposições. Os trabalhos artísticos no jardim da biblioteca permitem o diálogo entre o discurso e o sentimento, ao considerarmos os materiais, as formas e as dimensões.

As relações entre a terra e as palavras, as imagens, as texturas e os volumes são elencadas nos trabalhos artísticos que solicitam a atenção dos visitantes para os múltiplos sentidos de acepção do tema.

Sentir-se em relação com a terra é também um processo de construção de linguagem.

A expressão deste sentimento permite-nos contornos de mundos, redesenhados nos discursos científicos, nas histórias de vida, nas relações sociais.

A exposição Objeto : terra foi realizada como um exercício artístico, iniciada em 2019, na investigação sobre as tecnologias de emprego da terra crua e cozida, com a preocupação de observar e analisar a recorrência das palavras relacionadas a este fazer, quer seja na escultura, na cerâmica ou na arquitetura de terra. 

and overlaps. The artworks at the library garden allow the dialogue between speech and emotions, when we consider the materials, shapes and dimensions. The relations between the earth and the words, images, textures and volumes are listed in artworks that require attention from the visitor to the multiple senses of the topic.

Feeling related to the earth is also a process of construction of language.

The expression of this feeling allows us to outline worlds, reshaped in scientific discourses, life stories and social relations. The exhibit was developed as an artistic exercise, started in 2019, during a research about the technologies of use of raw and baked earth, with the consideration to observe and analyze the recurrence of words related to this practice, be it in sculpture, ceramics or earth architecture.



A reflexão sobre a matéria em suas especificidades químico-físicas conduziu ao tema central desta pesquisa, da terra enquanto noção que supera a condição objetual – primeiramente abordada como uma substância inerte, 

The reflections on matter, in its physical and chemical specificities, led to the central topic of this research, earth as a notion that surpasses the objectual condition — at first approached as an inert, 

manipulável, posteriormente, como um modo de significar, haja vista a multiplicidade semântica na descrição dos processos e do uso da palavra nos diversos contextos estudados.

A observação sobre os estados da terra enquanto dimensão de vivência, conduz, neste sentido, para a problematização da palavra-conceito terra presente nas diversas manifestações artísticas, mas também em diálogo com as teorias científicas que analisam as relações com a natureza, o lugar e o território, ou ainda no aspecto simbólico presente desde as culturas ancestrais, nas fronteiras entre as disciplinas, enredada em um processo contínuo de significação cosmológica.

A exposição apresentada sobre o relvado em frente ao prédio da Biblioteca FCT NOVA foi projetada considerando o modo de circulação das pessoas no local, assim como a paisagem e

manipulable substance, and later as a way of signification, considering the vast semantic multiplicity in the description of the processes and the use of the word in the various contexts analyzed. The observation about the states of the earth as a dimension of life experience leads to the problematization of the word-concept earth, present in many artistic manifestations, but also in dialogue with scientific theories that analyze the relations with nature, setting and territory, or even in the symbolic aspect present since the ancient cultures, on the frontiers between disciplines, entangled in a continuous process of cosmologic signification.

The exhibit presented on the lawn in front of the FCT NOVA Library building was projected considering the circulation of people, as well as the landscape 

No primeiro grupo de trabalhos a instalação efémera Glossário de terra é composta por blocos de terra crua em diversos formatos e organiza um caminho sinuoso que atravessa diagonalmente o relvado. A aparência de cada um dos blocos por vezes lembra-nos o sentido de palavras como esboroar, fender e romper, ilustradas em aquarela e descritas no painel de apresentação da exposição na fachada do prédio da Biblioteca. Sobre os blocos de terra deste caminho irregular estão dispostos os livros-objeto, manipuláveis e desdobráveis. 

and the relevance of the library as a space of reading and study.

The two sets of works that visually constitute the exhibit highlight the importance of the appearance of the earth, a trace element unfolded in the possibilities of reading about the conceptual dimension of the topic.

In the first group of works, the ephemeral installation Glossary of earth, composed of blocks of raw earth in various shapes, organizes a sinuous path that diagonally crosses the lawn.

The appearance of each block sometimes resembles the sense of words like crumble, split and break, illustrated and described in the introduction panel of the exhibit on the front of the building. The object books, manipulable and unfoldable, are placed on the earth blocks of this irregular path. 

Nos livros-objeto realizados em cerâmica, as leituras sobre a noção de objeto e sujeito, da terra enquanto substância, superfície e planeta ecossistêmico, continua a ser retomada de modo subtil, em composições que transitam entre as dimensões de proximidade com o conceito. 

In the object books, made in ceramics, the readings about the notion of object and subject, of earth as substance, surface and ecosystemic planet, are continually resumed in a subtle manner, in compositions that transit between the notions of proximity with the concept. 

No livro Casa- caverna, duas placas de grés a 1200 ºC com imagens gravadas com óxido de manganês, remetem a tijolos em uma das páginas e na outra a uma gruta; ou ainda, da terra quando imaginada a partir de um ponto de vista distanciado, apresentada na representação do planeta em transformação, na série de azulejos Estudos sobre Gaia.

No segundo conjunto, os quatro púlpitos em taipa formam a instalação intitulada Plataforma. Os blocos de terra são semelhantes enquanto forma e superfície, dispostos no terreno sinuoso com níveis diferenciados. Os púlpitos, colocados nas quatro direções cardeais, voltados para o centro, evocam tanto a imaginação sobre o discurso e a comunicação, pela semelhança com a topologia específica do módulo, quanto o caráter contextual — do espaço, na observação dos materiais, do tempo e do ambiente. 

In the book Cave house, two 1200 °C sandstone plates and images engraved with manganese oxide, resembling bricks in one of the pages and a cave in the other.

Or even Earth when imagined from a distant perspective, represented as planet in transformation, in the series of tiles Studies of Gaia.

In the second set, the four pulpits of rammed earth make up the installation Platform. The earth blocks, similar in shape and surface, are disposed on the sinuous terrain on different levels.

The pulpits, arranged on the four cardinal directions, facing the center, evoke both the imagination about speech and communication, by the similarity with the specific topology of the module, and the contextual character of the space, on the observation of the materials, of the time and the setting. 

A instabilidade, força e fragilidade da terra nestes blocos é condição assente para todos os que imaginam o próprio corpo nesta posição, em cima do degrau do púlpito, em diálogo com outros corpos possíveis. A polifonia dos diferentes pontos de vista continua a ecoar a cada observação, seja nos insetos que passaram a usufruir da terra que compõe o púlpito, seja nos pássaros do jardim, interessados nestas novas paragens.

The instability, strength and frailty of the earth in these blocks is the basic condition for all that imagine their own body in this position, on the step of the pulpit, in dialogue with other possible bodies. The polyphony of the many points of view still echoes with each observation, whether it is in the insects that came to enjoy the earth that constitutes the pulpit or in the birds of the garden, interested in this new haven.

Agradecimentos Esta exposição ocupou cerca de cem metros quadrados, foi realizada com aproximadamente três metros cúbicos de terra e condensou mais de dois anos de trabalho para a realização dos livros de cerâmica. Neste ritmo quantitativo, a lista de pessoas que auxiliaram neste processo é extensa, afetivamente e operacionalmente.

O trabalho conjunto e a confiança nesta proposta foram fundamentais para o desenvolvimento do projeto, que por suas dimensões, exigiu esforços — mesmo com poucos recursos em uma época com diversas restrições causadas pela pandemia. Destas parcerias nascem os objetos de terra e os sujeitos de terra, assim como uma terra ativa, modeladora de universos e interações.
