INTRODUCTION

As an aspiring interior designer, my mission is to transform interior spaces into environments that enhance the lives of their users. Given how much of our lives are spent indoors, it’s essential that these spaces not only accommodate user needs but also support well-being by connecting users to the natural world. I believe that interior environments should be restorative, offering opportunities for growth rather than creating limitations. Whether at home, work, or school, people deserve spaces that stimulate creativity, focus, and potential.

Interior design has the power to evoke strong emotions and shape experiences. I am driven by the joy of stepping into a space that captivates curiosity and invites exploration. My goal is to create designs that inspire others in the same way.

01 ACCRESCENT COMMUNITY

Located on Long Island, NY, this 75,000 SF building currently houses the Suffolk County Community College Resource Center.

My fourth-year capstone project reimagines this building as a community center in a suburban area lacking other third places for residents to grow social ties in the community.

Concept Development Accrescent is the basis for creating a community center that amplifies the voice of each individual who uses the space. Each voice is represented by sound waves that move through the space and interact with each other. Accrescence describes the continuous growth of these sound waves as they interact. The waves ripple and create a butterfly effect that grows with time. In Accrescent Community, the interactions between sound waves cause them to grow and merge into something even louder. There is power in social interactions, and the concept of Accrescence promotes the continuous growth of social ties throughout the community.

02 NEXT OFFICE

The NEXT office was created as a third-year studio project according to the Steelcase NEXT Student Design Competition. The 11,000 SF office space hosts an Architecture and Design firm in Dallas, TX. The final design solution represents the Dallas context and the goals of NEXT as an organization. A majority of furniture selections are Steelcase, and programmed spaces are included according to the Steelcase competition requirements.

Concept Sculpting is the process of creating and refining a project. The NEXT workers do this every day, along with the artists of Dallas. This creative process of starting with a rough idea and refining it will be embedded in the space. Rough, angular sculptural forms exemplify the beginning stages of creativity, while organic, smooth, sculptural forms will represent the refined projects after they have been sculpted.

There will be a creative workshop dedicated to sparking creativity that will host local artists to expose the workers of NEXT to many different creative works of art. This is a chance to get connected to the local Dallas community and continue thinking creatively.

The logo at left takes the organization name, NEXT, and transforms it to represent the concept of sculpt. Moving from left to right, each letter becomes smoother and more refined.

Evidence-Based Design Adequate daylight in offices improves worker wellbeing. All areas along the windows are open to allow light further into the space. Light shelves in the work cafe and workstations prevent glare for people directly against windows.

Workers in open-plan offices report that unwanted noise makes them prefer to work elsewhere, so it is important to have acoustic solutions in offices.

V.I.A glass walls and Everwall partitions provide acoustic privacy for offices.

In addition to carpet and upholstered chairs, acoustic panels absorb noise in the workstation areas.

03 TRANSFORMATIVE TIDES RESORT

Located in Uluwatu, Bali, the Transformative Tides resort takes inspiration from the changing energy present in both the ocean and the minds of users. This was created as a third-year studio project. Provided with only the plot of land on an Uluwatu cliff, the main challenge of this project was creating the site to include the required spaces in a way that would encourage users to go through a transformation while moving through the resort. The final design fulfills this goal by strongly relying on conceptual zoning and diagrams to create the site, and it includes inspiration from local Bali precedents.

The Transformative Tides Resort is based on the cycle of energy in the ocean. There are periods of high energy in contrast with periods of stillness, and a period of transformation in between. In the design, this concept is called Surge to Still. The Balinese phrase Mengalami Perubahan means to experience changes, and combined with Surge to Still, serves as the conceptual inspiration for the resort.

Users of the resort experience this cycle of energy within their minds. The resort consists of different zones for these different states of energy. Users will enter the resort in a state of high energy, and as they move through, will emerge with a still mind after immersing themselves in the resort.

04 AGING IN PLACE APARTMENT

Located in Fort Collins, CO, this new community development will house multiple apartment styles for older adults to transition to as their support needs increase. The development also features a community center. The focus of the following two-bedroom apartment for this community is to facilitate a connection to nature in older adults. Being connected to nature can greatly improve the lives of this aging population.

Concept and Final Design

This home for aging adults will facilitate a connection to nature which can greatly improve their health. As aging adults move into this space, they will be starting a new phase of their lives, and putting down new roots. This space is all about cultivating those roots. Openings will bring light in, and there will be greenery throughout the space. The patio offers an opportunity to directly experience nature and the outdoors. Earthy colors and natural materials like wood and stone bring nature indoors.

The space will be warm as well as bright and energizing.

The final floor plan includes a smooth transition from the open areas of the kitchen, dining, and living room as one moves from the entrance of the apartment through the rest of the space.

In putting the dining room and office into zones of the open living room, the apartment remains airy with increased light flow throughout. In order to denote these as separate spaces, material selection reinforces the different functions. The dining table is centered on a stone accent wall, and the back wall of the office niche has a dark green paint color.
