PUP POWER CHECKLIST WITH …

Being a pet owner also brings responsibilities. Isaac Regional Council is here to help guide you through your legal requirements. Registration – All dogs MUST be registered with Council from 12 weeks of age. Registration is due annually in September.* Microchipping – All dogs MUST be microchipped from 12 weeks of age. This can be arranged through your local vet. A microchip is an implanted chip that stores the dog’s (and owner’s) details on a national data base. This is not the same as having your dog registered with Council.* De-sexing – This is highly recommended to avoid unwanted animals and can be done from 6 months of age through your local vet. De-sexed dogs also receive reduced registration fees with Council. Vaccinations, worm and flea treatment – Visit your local vet to find out what’s best. Identification – Recommended to be attached to your dog’s collar with their name and your contact details. Two bowls – One for water and one for food. Food – Visit your local vet to get advice on what will suit your dog the best. For puppies, they have a lot of growing to do in the first two years and nutrition is very important for a healthy pup.

Grooming – Depending on their coat such as shampoo, ear cleaner, comb and nail clippers.

Enclosure – Enclosures must be secure and an acceptable size in relation to the animal housed. They must be kept clean and sanitary with food scraps collected daily. Waste and waste water from the enclosure must not impact on adjoining premises.* Keeping of greyhounds – Greyhound owners must ensure that dogs are kept without nuisance, and a code of practice has been approved by the Greyhound Racing Authority of QLD in accordance with these requirements. * Breeding dogs – In Queensland, if you breed a dog on or after 26 May 2017 you must be registered as a breeder - even if your dog has an unplanned litter or you only breed puppies for family and friends (primary producers breeding working dogs are exempt). Visit the Queensland Dog Breeder Register website at qdbr.daf.qld.gov.au to register as a breeder. * Barking nuisance – The person responsible for the dog must take all reasonable measures to prevent the animal from making a disturbance or noise causing a nuisance to occupants of adjoining premises or in the vicinity of which the animal is kept. * Impoundment – The fee for each impoundment differs. Check out Council’s Annual Schedule of Fees and Charges on our website.

Paws from the Pound – Why not consider adopting a dog from Paws from the Pound. Council often have dogs looking for their new fur-ever homes. Any dog from Paws from the Pound come registered with Council, microchipped and de-sexed. They have also been assessed for their suitability to enter a new home. Call 1300 ISAACS (1300 47 22 27) for more information.

* Penalties apply Pursuant to Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and Isaac Regional Council Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011. Correct as at July 2019.
