By the time everyone reads this snippet the holidays will be over and the dreaded school bells will start ringing once more. I would like to report that the holidays, touch wood, has been somewhat uneventful with a majority of people behaving themselves. At this time however we have not had the Clermont Races. I expect that they will be more than well behaved due to the fact that nobody wants to spoil their finery, yeah right!! Twin Hills was a delight except for the more than ever present dust that seemed to permeate every nook and cranny no matter where you were Rodeo, Races or Campdraft. I would suggest the committee in future order about 2 inches of rain a week before the event to settle it all down. I understand the order would involve a very traditional dance in the middle of a big clearing to the satisfaction of the heavens above to open up. Of course the more vigorous the dance the more rain you would get. Now something like that would be worth watching and uploading to Youtube. Jokes aside everyone seemed to have fun and with these sorts of events replacing the old B&S Balls, mums and dads can’t complain too loud. Remember the old B&S’s, no not many would. Clermont Police have taken part in active armed offender training in response to mass lone wolf shootings that seem to populate our news feeds frequently. The training was dynamic and well received and has given police another tool to combat these events.

With Police shootings in America seemingly out of control and our police brothers and sisters under intense scrutiny no matter what happens I would like to remind everyone it was Police Remembrance Day on September 29. There has been 42 police shot and killed in the USA this year alone with many more wounded. That country has issues with firearms which I sincerely hope does not spread to our shores. It is reported in the weekend papers that not only is there hundreds of millions of guns in America but the population, in anticipation of gun control being introduced, has stockpiled over one trillion rounds of ammunition. To put that in perspective that’s about 3000 rounds for every man, woman and child in the USA. On a lighter note I hope everyone has had a good holiday and see you all at the races or on the road, whichever one. The station counter has been going gangbusters but that means the computer sometimes has hiccups when doing licenses. I would like to remind everyone it is not the Queensland Police Services equipment, and we deal with it as best we can. Jan has become somewhat of techie and has learnt all the good phrases, like turn it off and turn it back on again, which some of our more helpful locals also mention to do. The Sarge.

Meals on Wheels - Presidents report 2015/2016 contributed by Caroline Gillies

It gives me great pleasure to present my President’s report for 2015/16. Firstly I would like to thank Jenny Wilby for chairing our Annual General Meeting. I would also like to thank our committee, Vice President Bronwyn Talbot, Secretary Chris Eassie, Chant rep Les Bones, Sandra Strohfeldt, Marg Henn, Julie Warren, Fay Harrison, Susie Tyler and Marcella Clancy. Your attendance at our meetings and your contribution are most appreciated. Thanks you also to our generous volunteers who have once again stepped up and delivered 2780 meals for the last year. This number is down on previous years, but we seem to have ebbs and flows. We held our 30th Anniversary on October 25, 2015, at the Leo Hotel with an afternoon tea. We were entertained by Rosemarie Hawke and Judy Ann Dalrymple as our guest speakers. There were many past and present volunteers in attendance. Joan Grant and Fay Harrison cut our celebration cake. Our founding president, Jean Robertson, who could not be with us due to ill health provided some very interesting information on the struggles with bureaucracy getting our service up and going.

We are confident that we can manage to run independently and with this in mind we held a raffle over the two show days which was very successful with the community supporting us very generously. We provided our clients with a traditional Christmas on December 21. They each received a small gift and we purchased a hamper for the kitchen staff at the hospital to show our gratitude for their help in providing meals for our clients. Chris and I met with the Director of Nursing and the Business Manager at the hospital to draw up an m.o.u. with Queensland Health to continue providing our meals. They agreed that all was in order and it would be business as usual. In May Karen Butler, our Regional Support Officer resigned her position. Rachel Speachly is her replacement. Chris and I have met with her and she seems to be enthusiastic and easy going. As I look back on 10 years of being President/ Co-ordinator of Clermont Meals on Wheels, I think we can be proud of a job well done. As we receive many positive and grateful remarks from our clients on the care shown by our volunteers, I am certain we will continue to grow as a vital service in our town.

In November 2015 we decided to decline the funding from the Department of Social Services, as the work load involved was too great for such a small financial gain.

Please help if you can I have had an inquiry regarding the plaque that was placed near the tree that was planted by Lady May Abel Smith and a representative of the Girl Guides in 1962 at the main Lime Street entrance to the Centenary Park. Does anyone know what the occasion was? It could have been either (1) Queensland as a separate State or (2) Clermont as a township. Also if anyone might know where the original plaque ended up and if anyone knows what date this happened. If you have any information I would love to hear from you either in person or by email. My email address is: Lynette.Jones@isaac.qld.gov.au and the office address is Shop 3, 42 Daintree Street, Clermont, Qld, 4721.

National Water Week colouring-in competition

First Five Forever

Hey kids! Get your brightest pencils or felt pens out and enter the Isaac Regional Council’s National Water Week colouring-in competition.

The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes.

Entry forms can be collected from the Clermont Library and completed entries need to be returned to the library by 4pm, Friday October 21. The competition is open to children aged up to 13 years-old and is divided into four age categories.

Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.

National Water Week will be celebrated from 16 – 22 October.

The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books.
