Clermont Historical Centre triggers ‘A Flood of Memories’ Relive stories of courage, heroism and tragedy during the Clermont Historical Centre’s ‘A Flood of Memories’ Exhibition.
Clermont Historical Centre Co-ordinator Deb Alvoen said the exhibition will feature photography by Clermont resident Gordon Pullar.
The exhibition, commemorating the centenary of the devastating 1916 Clermont Flood, opens Wednesday, August 31 and runs until December 2017.
“Mr Pullar captured some amazing images from the height of the flood and destruction, through to the eventual rebuilding of the town.
Mayor Anne Baker said the exhibition is a collection of local stories, photos and memorabilia from one of the deadliest floods in Australian history.
“Another highlight of the exhibition, which can be found in the grounds of the Clermont Historical Centre, is the highly revered Aveling and Porter traction steam engine that relocated numerous buildings after the flood.
“In the early hours of December 28, 1916 a wall of water laid ruin to the old town of Clermont after a cyclone crossed the Queensland coast. “More than 60 lives were tragically lost, 10 homes destroyed, 50 buildings damaged and 10,000 head of livestock killed.
