A day in their shoes at Isaac Libraries Isaac kids explored what it would be like living with a disability during special Story Time sessions, September 12 to 16. Isaac Libraries invited children and parents to join in Disability Action Week activities, featuring braille text books, audio stories and sensory activities. The aim of Disability Action Week is to empower people with disabilities, raise awareness of disability issues and to improve access and inclusion throughout our communities.

Library activities were designed to give children an insight into what it might be like living with a disability. Events were held at Carmila, Clermont, Dysart, Glenden, Nebo, Middlemount, Moranbah and St Lawrence libraries. One in five Queenslanders has a disability, or has disability touch their lives in some way. Just a quick note today for the people of Clermont. It is with great sadness we have seen another one of our characters in Joan Grant pass on. Joan was a lovely lady whom I immensely enjoyed stirring up at any opportunity. The one thing about Joan is she could bite back and I suppose it is that tenacity for life that saw one of the bigger innings seen out in the town. My sympathies to all her family and to anyone that loses a loved one, it is not any easy time. On the town front it has been a few busy weekends with the men’s league, ladies league and the men’s union teams all having their finals for the season. Some shenanigans were had by all and some especially unattractive outfits were worn. But that’s Australia for you, if you can’t get dressed up in drag and drink a few beers with your mates while on display to the whole town, then life would be dull. An enterprising young bloke decided to get a fake ID online and tried his luck at the pub. But 730 reasons later, I don’t know if he will be so eager in the future. Kids wait until your 18 to go to the pubs and races and footy etc to buy alcohol. It’s a different story if it is a private function, it is up to the organisers of the events as to their stance on young people drinking alcohol and who will supervise for the evening.

With the roadworks south of town I have noticed a few more cars using the Cheeseborough Road entrance to town to avoid the delays at the lights. I tested both runs and it is probably just as quick to sit at the lights. Anybody using Cheeseborough please be mindful of the horses, gravel and anything else that will put you into the bush and cause grief while driving. On that note the behaviour of drivers has been okay but could be better around the streets of Clermont. A spike in drink drivers was noticed but has since tapered off. The disturbing part was that many are local drivers getting caught who should know better. I have gone over your chances of getting caught before and it is much more likely to get caught here than the big city. Some people lately coming forward about drug issues in town. Please provide any information whether to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or police link on 131 444 or simply ring the station on 4983 4444. Drugs are a community responsibility not just the police. If you have an issue there are many ways to deal with it, including the overuse of alcohol, seek help. Anyway that’s it for now, The Sarge.

Monash Lodge Inc - Presidents report 2015/2016 contributed by Christine Marteene

As another year passes we look back and might think that not much has been achieved but this would be incorrect. A small but dedicated committee, in a country town has, in my opinion, achieved a great deal for the year. The major achievement of the year has been the purchase of the new bus for the residents of Monash lodge and the wider community. This has made it easier for the staff to take the residents on outings and has resulted on multiple trips. Some of these include the dam, the fire station and down to Penny’s to take part in the community through the simple act of having smoko. The feedback from the residents, through the coordinator, has been positive with all looking forward to the outings and enjoying getting back into the community that they love. This committee assisted Julie Schumaker in her role as coordinator by funding the excursions as well as allocating funds to allow gifts to be purchased for the resident’s birthdays as well as the day to day luxuries that make their life a little more comfortable. Julie has been a great help and I think she is attuned to the requirements of the residents. We have finally managed to get the shed built down at Lagoona! After 3 years of waiting for Queensland Health we took the bit between our teeth and made the executive decision on where it was to go and had it erected. Finally it is up and being used. Renovations were still ongoing until Queensland Health indicated that the Lodge was not supportable into the future due to aged care regulations and the prohibitive cost of bringing the building up to meet those regulations. At this stage the committee tried to get some commitment to maintaining the Lodge for the future but unfortunately we have been unsuccessful.

To this end we have given input to the design of a new facility to be built at the hospital to house the residents and maintain some level of aged care in Clermont. This has been a difficult process and while no one is completely happy, we have a commitment of funds to try and replicate the relaxed atmosphere that is Monash Lodge. The year has also been a sad one with the passing of some of the characters that lived and breathed life into the Lodge. They all will be missed for what they offered to the Lodge and the Clermont community. As unfortunate as it is we fail to appreciate what we have sometimes until it is gone. Hopefully those that are no longer here have left the community a better place for their time in it. The committee has also lost someone lately with the passing of Joan Grant a long time committee member and contributor to all that has been built. We pass on our condolences to her family and friends. All this would not have happened without the time and the support of the committee. So I thank you all very much. I also would like to thank Frances and Chris as without them my job would be a lot harder. They help me with a lot of work behind the scenes in order to keep things running smoothly and I thank them for their continued support. I also thank Frances for her time in going to the CHANT meetings with me which has assisted in trying to understand how Queensland Health works and that is not easy. I have enjoyed my time as President and I would like to wish the new committee all the best for next year. Thank you, Christine Marteene.

All stars created will be on display at Isaac Libraries until July 2017 before being added to the display for the Commonwealth Games. XT - THUMP boxing It’s a nice way to start your day. This class incorporates 10mins of circuit cardio, 10mins strength training and 20mins thump boxing. A fully functional total body workout that burns, burns, burns. 80’s Night This will be a quick 30mins aerobic workout inspired by the ‘Greats’ of the 80’s. It will incorporate acerbic movement, 80’s Step Aerobics and some of the old time chain dances. It’s fitness and fun in one! Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training. Metafit This is a 30mins bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire!

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45mins whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy.

We will be holding our AGM on Sunday September 25 after the Sunday shoot.

It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.
