Plaque unveiled to remember lives lost The Clermont community gathered at Ivan Bettridge Park over the weekend to remember the lives lost in the devastating 1916 Flood.
Council will mark the 100th anniversary of the flood during the Graveside Memorial at the Clermont Cemetery on December 28.

Mayor Anne Baker expressed the importance of remembering the more than 60 flood victims, along with family and community members. “I could not begin to imagine the heartache and devastation the community felt in the wake of the flood. “Families were forever changed with mothers, fathers and children taken so suddenly. “The community showed enormous courage and determination to pick up the pieces after a horrific disaster of that proportion. “That’s why it’s so important we remember not only the flood victims, but also the heroes who saved lives and helped rebuild Clermont. “Thank you to everyone involved in the ceremony and to Chris Marteene, President of Monash Lodge and its residents for contributing to the instalment of the commemorative plaque.”

1916 - When I was only six written by Adelaide Bryant At the unveiling of the Commemorative Plaque to remember the lives lost in the 1916 flood, Olivia Gillies read a poem written by her Grandmother, Adelaide Bryant, called ‘1916 – When I Was Only Six’. The poem recounts what her great great Grandfather witnessed as a six year old boy during the 1916 Flood.
Lower and lower came the darkening clouds,
The night wore on, the creek roared,
Days we waited to cross the creek,
The winds increased their fury,
But high above that sound we heard the sounds of people screaming.
People missing, people dead,
The rain came down in buckets, My hear beat fast, my reason fled, Because I was only six. Mother and Elizabeth finally came home, Drenched and apprehensive. They’d bought flour and treacle. Mum said the deluge might last And that the creek was running fast, When I was only six. Night came on with abatement. “Go to bed and say your prayers” Was my mothers only statement. The rain pounded on our tin roof, The goats ba’hd in the yard.
The town was isolated. Courageous people carrying on, Sharing what they had,
I crept out to where my mother knelt in prayer,
taking in the homeless, burying the dead,
A lantern fitfully burning. The tears streamed down her face, “I fear people are drowning” And I was only six. In the morning a watery sky, And utter devastation.

Water rushed across the flat,
A testament to the height of the flood.
No town was left.
Miles away stock and bodies found,

Isaac Regional Council is urging residents to consider their ‘what-if’ plan and get prepared during RACQ Get Ready Week, October 10-16. Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Mayor Anne Baker said Queensland is at increased risk of natural disasters during November to April. “Isaac is susceptible to bushfires, flooding, tropical cyclones, road closures and service outages to name a few,” she said. “In recent years we have seen how quickly natural disasters can arise, and how devastating and widespread their impacts can be. “RACQ Get Ready Week is an important reminder to get prepared now by tidying up gardens, cleaning gutters and making sure insurances are up to date.

One Million Stars to End Violence Isaac Libraries will host star weaving work stations between August 2016 - July 2017. Everyone from individuals to community groups are invited to join the project and help weave stars. Help Isaac Libraries reach their goal of 10,000 stars
August 2016 - July 2017 One Million Stars to End Violence is a love and peace filled community project started by Brisbane artist Maryann Talia Pau and supported by Queensland State Government. The goal is to weave one million stars to display at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018.

Phase two Isaac asset management launches Isaac Regional Council assets are going under the microscope as part of a long term Asset Management Plan.

Mayor Anne Baker said consultants from Assetic will travel the region over the next six weeks collecting data. “Residents can expect to see the consultants taking photos of everything from parks, pools and playgrounds, to Council Offices and Resource Recovery Centres. “The data they capture will give us a better understanding of the condition of our assets. “It will help Council distribute funding and projects where it will be needed into the future. “The Assetic consultants have started the audit in Moranbah this week and will visit all Isaac communities over the next six weeks.” The asset data collection is phase two of a long term Asset Management Plan for Isaac. It follows the Isaac road survey, which was carried out earlier this year. The plan will include an extensive audit of roads, water and sewerage network, parks and gardens as well as council buildings, vehicles and machinery.

Please help if you can I have had an inquiry regarding the plaque that was placed near the tree that was planted by Lady May Abel Smith and a representative of the Girl Guides in 1962 at the main Lime Street entrance to the Centenary Park. Does anyone know what the occasion was? It could have been either (1) Queensland as a separate State or (2) Clermont as a township. Also if anyone might know where the original plaque ended up and if anyone knows what date this happened. If you have any information I would love to hear from you either in person or by email. Dog owners are encouraged to renew registrations before October 14 to receive a generous 50% fee reduction. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said roaming and unregistered dogs are a region-wide concern. “If you own a dog please be responsible and make sure it’s registered, micro-chipped, properly fenced and cared for.” Unregistered dogs and first-time registrations will not receive a renewal notice and do not qualify for a discount.
Residents can visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/dog-registration or their local Council office to fill out the registration form and make payment. Council advises if unregistered dogs are impounded, their owners will pay an impoundment fee and registration fee before their dog is released home. If you find someone else’s pet roaming the streets, phone 1300 ISAACS (47 22 27) and notify the local laws officer of its description and location.

Be prepared for flying fox season With flying foxes migrating through Isaac from now through to January, Isaac Regional Council is advising residents to take the time now to prepare.

Not disturb flying foxes resting during the day as this stresses the bats and reduces their ability to migrate away from town.
With colonies taking roost in Moranbah, Middlemount and Clermont last season, Mayor Anne Baker said preparation is vital.
Council will prepare and monitor public spaces, and will continue to work with the community to help manage flying fox populations.
“A reminder that nighttime feeding activity is normal but daytime activity may be a sign of a roost.
In the unlikely event you are scratched or bitten by a flying fox seek medical attention immediately.
“If you spot flying foxes roosting in your trees during the daytime, contact Council immediately, and our environmental team will investigate.”

“Please remember disturbing, hurting or causing nuisance to flying foxes without a permit is illegal.” To minimise the impacts of flying fox migrations, Council advises residents to: •
Make trees near houses less attractive to flying-foxes by clearing the under-storey and removing some branches of the trees.

Planting low, dense trees and shrubs around fence lines to form a barrier that flying foxes are unlikely to roost in.

See the garden grow Have you seen the Children’s Flower Garden at the Clermont Library? Children planted the pretty petunia patch during a recent Storytime session.
First Five Forever The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes.
The garden was formerly a water feature, and now has a new life with the pot filled and planted with flowers.
Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.
Children are eagerly waiting for the garden to be in full bloom.
The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books.
National Water Week colouring-in competition Hey kids! Get your brightest pencils or felt pens out and enter the National Water Week colouring-in competition. Entry forms can be collected from the Clermont Library and completed entries need to be returned to the library by 4pm, Friday October 21. The competition is open to children aged up to 13 yearsold and is divided into four age categories. National Water Week will be celebrated from October 16-22. Gather friends and weave a star Get a group of friends together or come on your own to the Clermont Library and join in the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ star weaving project. We have a star weaving station set up for people to drop in anytime during opening hours to weave a star from ribbon.

Isaac’s goal is to weave 10,000 stars to contribute to the display at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. All stars created will be on display at Isaac Libraries until July 2017 before being added to the display for the Commonwealth Games.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS TRX Suspension Training Every Suspension training exercise builds true functional strength and improves flexibility, balance and core stability all at once, as is required on the playing fields of sport and in life. Intermediate sessions are higher intensity workouts as basics should be well ingrained in participants. Monday, and Saturdays, Wednesday 30mins Flexibility focus Rip Group Rx A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light weights. 45-1 hour in duration. Bring towel and water bottle! $16.50 casual/ free for members. Rip Express is a 45min major muscle group workout. THUMP boxing for fitness 1 hour free for members. CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.
XT - THUMP boxing It’s a nice way to start your day. This class incorporates 10mins of circuit cardio, 10mins strength training and 20mins thump boxing. A fully functional total body workout that burns, burns, burns. 80’s Night This will be a quick 30mins aerobic workout inspired by the ‘Greats’ of the 80’s. It will incorporate acerbic movement, 80’s Step Aerobics and some of the old time chain dances. It’s fitness and fun in one! Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training. Metafit This is a 30mins bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire! Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45mins whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

Netball fans rejoice! Mixed netball is starting soon. We are now taking nominations for Clermont Senior Netball Association’s mixed netball competition. The season will commence on November 1 and run through to March 14 2017 (with a three week break over the Christmas / New Year period). It is cheap to play - just $5 per player per game. All levels of netball experience are encouraged to join in our friendly competition. If you don’t have a team but still want to play, we are happy to find a team for you.
