Be the Hero, be the Villain at Isaac Libraries this summer! Isaac Libraries invites children and families to discover heroes, villains, sidekicks and more in the Summer Reading Club (SRC) this school holidays.

The SRC is a free online and in-library holiday program run from December 1, 2016 to January 31, 2017. Mayor Anne Baker said children aged four years and up can register for the program. “Young readers will be encouraged to engage with a variety of traditional and non-traditional heroes and heroines by exploring a variety of genres. “Get in touch with your creative side in craft, coding and recycled art workshops. “The fun continues online with plenty of opportunities to keep young readers inspired and win great prizes! “Blog with Australian Children’s Laureate, Leigh Hobbs and popular children’s author, Deborah Abela, search for answers to Encyclopaedia Britannica’s sponsored quiz, craft an ending to Mick Elliot’s story starter and lots more. “SRC Club members can also meet 21 new Australian authors and illustrators online and preview their newly released titles.”
The SRC is delivered nationally, giving participants the opportunity to connect with reader’s right across the country. The program is run in partnership with State Library of Queensland, the Australian Library and Information Association, and the Australian Public Library Alliance. Last year over 48,000 Australian children registered for the SRC and collectively read more than 333,000 books. Children can join in the fun at Isaac Libraries or online from 1 December 2016 to 31 January 2017 at www.summerreadingclub.org.au Highlights of the Summer Reading Club at Isaac Libraries include: •
Free activity book and a SRC pack which includes bookmark, tattoo, stickers, and SRC trading cards.

Wanton, Wild & Unimagined Invading your imagination Moranbah Coalface Art Gallery is the first stop on the national tour of Wanton, Wild & Unimagined, a playful exhibition that stirs the imagination and evokes reflection. Townsville environmental artist, Alison McDonald has spent many hours manipulating the humble plastic bottle. Collecting thousands of lids, McDonald makes a variety of creations of sculptured recycled plastics. “My inspiration is plants, oceans and John Wyndham’s 1951 post-apocalyptic science fiction novel, The Day of the Triffids,” she said. “Humans have long had a love affair with plastic, believing it to be the answer to our eco-prayers. “My artworks reuse plastic materials to raise questions about the relationship we have with plastic and its sustainability.”
“The highly anticipated exhibition will be shown in 12 galleries throughout Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria,” Dr McBurnie, Director of Umbrella Studio, said. “It’s bound to fascinate adults and children alike. It invites close encounters with the work, which is kooky, imaginative and, most of all, fun.”

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said it’s a major coup to have an exhibition of this calibre make Isaac its first stop on national tour. “Alison McDonald is an outstanding artist, sharing an important message and we are proud to be hosting her exhibition launch in the Coalface Art Gallery.” Curator Ross Searle said McDonald is greatly influenced by her location in the tropical north of Queensland. “Plastic makes up the majority of marine debris not only seen on northern shorelines but floating in oceans worldwide. “The work draws attention to cynical and apathetic consumer culture. There is also great humour in the way these playful transformations engage our senses.”

Don’t play with fire Isaac residents are being urged to be vigilant with a high and very high fire danger rating across the region. Isaac Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Isaac Mayor Anne Baker said November has been dry and warm and temperatures have been reaching high thirties. “Don’t play with fire; the risks are too high under these conditions. “Unattended or mismanaged fires may create sparks and cause fires to spread quickly. “I urge residents to be alert and report any vegetation fires to Triple Zero (000) immediately.” There has been an increase in fire activity in parts of the region with a vegetation fire currently near Suttor Development Road being monitored by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES). Residents should take time to prepare their properties for bushfires by: •
finalising Bushfire Survival Plans.

removing leaf litter from yards
•
clearing gutters
•
staying up to date with bushfire warnings
“Do not wait for the worst to happen. Lower the risk to your family and community,” Mayor Baker said. “Bushfires can threaten anyone not just bushfire prone areas. QCOAL Foundation QCoal Foundation Scholarship QCoal Foundation is proud to partner with James Cook University (JCU) to provide the QCoal Foundation Scholarship. Established in 2015, the Scholarship aims to support students who intend to commence study at JCU, with preference given to those from rural and remote communities in Queensland. Students preparing to study geology or science at JCU are encouraged to apply for a QCoal Foundation Scholarship to help them with their studies. Recipients will receive $10,000 each year to help them through three years of study. To be eligible, students: •

need to have completed Year 12 within two years prior to studying at JCU and preference will be given to geology or science (excluding marine biology) students. must be starting their first year of study in a Bachelor’s degree at a campus or study centre of JCU (excluding Brisbane and Singapore).

must be currently living in, or have relocated from, an outer regional, remote or very remote area of Queensland (check website for details)
•
be an Australian citizen or holder of an Australian Permanent visa.
A new scholarship is awarded each year and applications opened on 1 October 2016. Further information is available at www.jcu.edu.au with applications due by 31 January 2017. First Five Forever
Summer arrives next week….and so does the Summer Reading Club (SRC)!
Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.
Isaac Libraries will hold the Summer Reading Club program, for schoolage children, from Friday December 1, 2016 to Tuesday January 31, 2017.
The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books.
Summer Reading Club 2016 theme is ‘Heroes and Villains’ and to join in the SRC fun, children must register.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families? The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children. Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs. Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age. CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training. Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-
intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness. XT - Thump boxing It’s a nice way to start your day. This class incorporates 10mins of circuit cardio, 10mins strength training and 20mins thump boxing. A fully functional total body workout that burns, burns, burns. 80’s Night This will be a quick 30mins aerobic workout inspired by the ‘Greats’ of the 80’s. It will incorporate acerbic movement, 80’s Step Aerobics and some of the old time chain dances. It’s fitness and fun in one! Metafit This is a 30mins bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire! Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45mins whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.
