2016-17 Budget focus: Vibrant places to connect Isaac Regional Council’s Budget, themed ‘Connecting Our Communities’ will see $3 million invested in parks, landcare and community facilities. Mayor Anne Baker said Council has approved nine new parks and landcare projects to ensure residents have great places to connect with friends and family. “Over the next twelve months Council will contribute to a hard court replacement project that will see some netball and tennis courts replaced across Isaac.” “We have listened to the community and have committed to build a new playground in Glenden’s Town Square, to replace the ageing Lions Park.

“Clermont skate enthusiasts will be pleased to hear Council will build a hard shade cover over the skate park, in line with the covers in Moranbah, Dysart and Middlemount. “Meanwhile, Isaac coast camping sites will get a boost, with stage one works to rehabilitate beach access walkways and fencing.” Mayor Baker said community facilities such as pools are also set for refurbishment. “Dysart, Clermont, St Lawrence, Flaggy Rock and Nebo pools will have works to replace loose or cracked tiles and grout, drainage and pipe works, to name a few. “Council understands how

Isaac 2016-17 Budget focus: Essential road and water connections Isaac roads and water infrastructure are key priorities in the 2016-17 Budget, themed ‘Connecting Our Communities.’ Mayor Anne Baker said Council is working to deliver essential connections injecting $20.2 million into Isaac roads. “More than $8.8 million will be invested in essential maintenance including resealing, grading and gravel re-sheeting across the region. “Council has approved 22 new road projects to bolster the safety and growth of our communities, industry and business. “A project of significance for the region is to upgrade the dangerous Cherwell Creek Bridge. “The project will raise the deck height of Cherwell Creek Bridge on the Peak Downs Mine Access Road, south of Moranbah, to increase flood immunity. “Council will contribute to this project with matched federal funding received from Round Two of the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Programme (BRP). “Popular agricultural route Lou Lou Park Road, north west of Clermont, will see gravel road improvements, to cater for the high volume of road train and rural traffic. “This budget recognises roads are vital to our agricultural and mining industry’s development.” “School student safety is also on Council’s radar, with the approval of road seal projects that will improve the Valkyrie and Kilcummin school bus routes. “Meanwhile, school crossings in Glenden and

Moranbah will also receive welcome safety improvements. Mayor Anne Baker said water infrastructure was the second highest spend in this year’s budget including $4.3 million in new capital works. Flood immunity boost: Cherwell Creek Bridge will receive a much needed upgrade to prevent future flood events like the one experienced in February this year.

Clermont Work Camp Advisory Committee - call for members Isaac Regional Council is calling for expressions of interest from persons interested in serving as members of the Community Advisory Committee for the Clermont Work Camp – Queensland Corrective Services. The Committee membership is honorary and members participate on a voluntary basis. The Community Advisory Committee’s role is to: • Provide information and advice with respect to the local community views and concerns.

• Promote effective and supportive relationships between communities and corrective service facilities, and thus facilitate the reintegration of offenders to the community. • Provide links to the community, which will assist in developing opportunities for prisoners in their rehabilitation and reparations. • Identify, assess and priorities community service projects.

Council calls on community to ‘Be Extraordinary’ In an Isaac-first initiative, Isaac Regional Council is driving a region-wide State Emergency Services (SES) recruitment campaign, calling on residents to ‘Be Extraordinary’. Launched this month with a television commercial featuring Isaac SES members, Council is hoping to boost the number of ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things’ across the Isaac. Mayor Anne Baker, Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, said Council is excited to deliver the ‘Be Extraordinary’ campaign. “This is the first time Council has led an SES recruitment drive,” she said. “Our goal is to grow the membership base of this vital volunteer organisation from 105 to 150 members and build community resilience. “Isaac SES desperately needs people who are willing to help their communities in times of emergency and disaster.

“No matter who you are or what you do, there’s an SES task to suit everyone. “With a region two-thirds the size of Tasmania, severe flood events earlier this year proved how vital SES are to the safety of our region, our communities and our people. “We are thrilled to also have the support of key industry employers in this campaign, and I would like to thank Anglo American, BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal (BMC), Civeo and Rio Tinto who are supporting SES volunteers at work and in the community.” ‘Be Extraordinary’ is funded by RACQ Get Ready Queensland and will feature across television, print, radio, digital and social media platforms from July 10. Fuzzbook contributed by The Sarge A very sad week for law enforcement around the world with the shooting of police officers in a sniper attack in Dallas. The police officers killed were making sure a demonstration against police shootings of African American people ran smoothly and unimpeded through the streets. The lone gunman allegedly had the intent to kill as many white police officers as possible. In a state where the average citizen can walk down the street carrying a loaded assault rifle it beggars belief that these incidents do not happen all the time. The mere fact that Americans collectively own an estimated 300 million guns, more than one per person, that’s man, woman and child, lends itself to the mindset that if every person is armed then its a level playing field in your own defense. The same as if nobody had guns. The happy medium I believe is somewhere for philosophers to find and the solution would be more confusing to work out than the American Constitution. However I do not believe the founding fathers of that Constitution would agree with the carnage seen time and time again in this modern age. Hundreds of guns in Australia are stolen every year making the availability of weapons to fall in the wrong hands a real possibility. For everyone’s safety make sure the guns you own are locked away in a gun safe, secured to a building and unable to be easily removed. What is said to have sparked the events in Dallas is police shootings of African American persons in traffic stops and interactions with police. Every 60 or so hours in the USA a police officer is killed in the line of duty. The average police officer in the USA has to deal with the rampant gun culture constantly. The question they must ask themselves is not whether that bloke they’re pulling over has a gun, but how many guns does he have, do

his buddies have guns and will I get to see my wife and kids again? Please everyone avoid the quick reporting media that sometimes sensationalizes everything to make a great story and wait for all the facts to come out in every situation. On a brighter note the low crime rate in Clermont continues. The incidence of drink drivers seems to have steadied of late with people opting to walk or take courtesy buses more. The incidence of very high speeds on our highways continues with the highest speed this week recorded at 144kph on the Charters Towers road in the 100 zone. That is a near $1200 fine, 8 points and 6 months suspension of your license. Would have been cheaper for the bloke to fly, in a plane that is. The Pokemon craze has hit the streets of Clermont. This is sad for a number of reasons, 1 I cannot believe people are overlaying reality with virtual reality, is this even a possibility? 2 Apparently grown adults are even hunting the streets of Clermont for Pokemon and lastly 3 people are driving and snapping the pokemon on the move with their phones. That’s a $360 fine if you’re the driver - it’s called a distraction offence now. It also takes 3 points off your license. Go to youtube and look up the accident in America caused by some idiot pulling up on a freeway to snap a pokemon, expensive! This craze, and that’s all it is a craze, like Justin BIEBER, will be over soon even though the kids are finally out of the house exercising apparently. Bit like all the golfers and their buggies! That’s all from me. Remember to ring the police station before heading down to have things done. I will be opening the counter on Monday the 18th of July for anyone desperately needing a license. It was pleasing to see a large attendance at workshops held by indigenous artist, Lloyd Hornsby at the Clermont Library on 4 July.

Babybounce (0-2 years), held Thursdays, 9.30am – 10am;

Storytime and Craft, held Fridays, 9.30am – 10.30am.

Two of the workshops were especially for children and the children painted either a boomerang or cap using traditional-looking designs. A general workshop for adults was also held and participants produced an aboriginal art-inspired painting to take home. Mr Hornsby held art workshops at Isaac Libraries and the Clermont Historical Centre during NAIDOC week. There is still an opportunity to attend a workshop with Lloyd Hornsby as he will hold a Master Class workshop for adults at the Clermont Historical Centre on Saturday, 23 July from 10am to 12pm and will cost $20 per participant. This workshop is limited to 15 participants and payment must be made at time of booking. History books for sale The Clermont Library has some history books relating to the Isaac Region, for sale. If you have an interest in local history, these books would be great to add to your book collection or make a nice gift for someone who likes reading books on ‘Australiana’. The books for sale are: ‘Below These Mountains’ by Lyall Ford ($15), ‘Behold Nebo: A History of Nebo Shire’ by George A. Mayes ($20) and ‘A Photographic Record of Colonial Queensland’ by Lyall Ford ($20). Both books by Lyall Ford relate to his great grandfather - pioneer photographer and miner, John Henry Mills, who lived in Mount Britton. Bag a book bargain If you love books and a bargain, come and check out the Clermont Library Book Sale. Most of the books and items on sale are preloved library books in good condition and paperbacks, magazines and CDs are priced at $2, hardbacks and DVDs cost $3 or buy a bag of books for $12. First Five Forever The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes. Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child. The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families? The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children. Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs. Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age. CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/ low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire! Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.
