Festival to commemorate centenary of Clermont’s devastating flood Clermont’s Gold and Coal Festival is set to mix arts and culture with a touch of history when it kicks off this month.

“The festival is in its 18th year and will kick off with twilight markets and local performances on Friday (August 19) from 5pm.

The festival will be held across two days, from Friday August 19, at Centenary Park Clermont.

“It continues on Saturday with the return of the ‘Pimp Yo Pan’ Art Competition judging, followed by a jewellery raffle to wrap things up in the afternoon.

Mayor Anne Baker said this year the Festival would commemorate 100 years since the devastating Clermont flood. “In 1916 a flood raged through the old town of Clermont tragically killing more than 60 people and destroying everything from family homes to businesses. “A moving feature of the Gold and Coal Festival will be the Floating Lantern Ceremony. “Some 300 lanterns will be released onto Hoods Lagoon to commemorate the flood, while lotus flower lanterns will also be released to honor those who lost their lives.”

The Floating Lantern Ceremony will take place 8pm on Friday evening. “If you wish to take part in the ceremony please come to one of the Lantern Embellishing Workshops that will be held this month by myself and local artist Marcia Braxton,” said Mrs Zordan. “We would love to have as many decorated lanterns as possible to help commemorate the flood centenary.” Floating Lantern Workshops and Pimp Yo Pan Art Competition are proudly supported through Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Grants.

The Gold and Coal Festival is an annual event organised by Clermont Artslink, which celebrates local arts and culture, while promoting Clermont’s rich history.

The RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Festival organiser and local artist Erin Zordan said the festival will host a unique line up of performances, live music, bush poetry and a second ‘unplugged’ stage.

For a full line up of entertainment and more information about the Gold and Coal Festival visit www.clermontartslink.com or contact Danny McKay on 4983 1880. Isaac... helping to energise the world

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

On the Shelf

Science is awesome National Science Week will be celebrated Australia-wide from Saturday August 13 to Sunday August 21. National Science Week is a celebration of science and technology and celebrating science is for everyone, not just school children. Here’s an awesome science experiment parents can supervise for you do at home – writing in ‘invisible’ ink. You will need lemon juice, toothpicks, paper and an iron. Dip the toothpick in lemon juice and write or draw on the paper with the lemon juice. Allow the paper to dry, and then iron over the paper until your secret drawing or message is revealed. So what’s going on? Lemon juice is acidic and the acid breaks down the cellulose of the paper into sugars. When heat is applied to the paper, the sugars caramelise and brown, making the secret message or drawing visible. Science experiments are fun for all ages so why not turn off the TV and ditch the Ipads or Ipods for a few hours and have some family fun together experimenting with science? Isaac Libraries have plenty of books on science experiments as well as other areas of science such as space, weather, rocks and minerals. Meet Stick Dog Stick Dog is a new character that has found a home in the junior fiction collection at the Clermont Library. Stick Dog and his canine friends are always on some crazy adventure…like trying to stop a moving truck, outwitting a man on a telephone pole and rescuing a friend from a squirrel while stealing donuts for breakfast. Read about Stick Dog and his adventures in: Stick Dog tries to Take the Donuts; Stick Dog Chases a Pizza; Stick Dog Wants a Hot Dog and Stick Dog Dreams of Ice Cream, all written by Tom Watson. History books for sale The Clermont Library has some history books relating to Isaac, for sale. If you have an interest in local history, these books would be great to add to your book collection or make a nice gift for someone who likes reading books on ‘Australiana’. The books for sale are: ‘Below These Mountains’ by Lyall Ford ($15), ‘Behold Nebo: A History of Nebo Shire’ by George A. Mayes ($20) and ‘A Photographic Record of Colonial Queensland’ by Lyall Ford ($20). Both books by Lyall Ford relate to his great grandfather pioneer photographer and miner, John Henry Mills, who lived in Mount Britton. Bag a book bargain If you love books and a bargain, come and check out the Clermont Library Book Sale. Most of the books and items on sale are preloved library books in good condition and paperbacks, magazines and CDs are

priced at $2, hardbacks and DVDs cost $3 or buy a bag of books for $12. Stock is constantly being added to the sale shelves. First Five Forever The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes. Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child. The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books. Library program/event bookings Bookings for all library programs are essential. To book call the Clermont Library on 4846 3746. Until next time, see you at the Library. Sue and Laura

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families? Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs. Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.
