CLERMONT RAG Community Newsletter Friday August 5, 2016

Residents to have say on Isaac’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan Isaac residents are invited to have their say on Isaac Regional Council’s (IRC) draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan (WRRP). Mayor Anne Baker said the plan, developed to address the need for a waste management and resource recovery strategy for the region, seeks to reduce waste going to landfill. “It’s been drafted in line with community expectations as well as legislative requirements, risk, safety and commercial approach. “Over the course of the WRRP development, Council has gained a greater understanding of what’s required to guide programs and assist contract and investment decisions about future waste operation services, infrastructure needs and management.

“With a strong focus on financial sustainability, Council is committed to providing solutions for the reduction, collection, resource recovery and disposal of waste,” Mayor Baker said. Water, Sewerage and Waste Advisory Committee Chair Cr Peter Freeleagus said the plan essentially provides a framework for the development, management and rationalisation of Council’s resource recovery functions across the region over the next ten years. He said it was expected that Council’s long-term plan to close some landfills and convert the operations to Refuse Transfer Stations, as well as upgrading existing facilities, was consistent with Council’s aim to maintain and operate these assets.

“At the same time we will continue to encourage the community to reduce waste going to landfills and support recycling programs. “The WRRP is designed to be flexible and implemented in stages with the ability to adjust to changing financial situations. “It offers significant potential cost savings through operational efficiencies and will help achieve improvements in amenity and health and safety while improving residual waste disposal and recycling ratios. “We encourage residents to help shape our future waste management strategy by providing their views and feedback.” To have your say visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au Feedback is to be provided by Monday August 29.

Not a great deal again to go in this weeks column. First of all welcome back to Jan from her holidays and with that normal operations resume at the front counter of the Police Station. There have been price increases across the board for government fees which is common at the change of the financial year. Remember we only accept cash or cheque, there are no EFTPOS or credit card facilities. For correct pricing give the station a call before visiting the bank to save a return visit. The weekend again saw a pretty steady crowd around the pubs. One bloke pulled the old disgusting act of walking out onto the street and decided to pee in the gutter. This was in front of everybody else and quite a shameful thing to watch. When spotted by police, he quickly high-tailed it back into the pub, out the other door and raced up the street. Needless to say after a good run around the streets, being followed by the police car he decided to return to the scene of the crime. A $345 fine later he was still denying it was him, only to have some local girls and boys yelling out ‘bull***’ Sarge that was him! Nobody else had racing stripes like him. Not only fees have increased, but fines have to with a general rise of about 5% across the board. Hue and cry all you like about this but remember it is voluntary, if you don’t do the stupid stuff you don’t pay the fines.

New laws were introduced from July 1 about alcohol served after midnight. Rapid intoxication drinks are not allowed to be sold. Basically rule of thumb is nothing premixed over 5% alcohol, no jelly shots etc can be served. To have a look at the list go to the Liquor Licensing website. This also applies to sporting clubs and the like when serving after midnight on a permit. Finally another mention about scams. Please do not throw away hard earned money on a deal that sounds too good to be true. Scammers work on the vulnerable as easy targets. They do not live just up the road, but probably live somewhere overseas where police can’t get to them. Do not rush into any deals and if a company says they are going to fine you because of something then this is a scam. Companies can not fine you - only the government can. Companies will administer fees but never will they threaten you or offer discounts for you to pay into a shonky account or by money orders or redeeming itune cards. So beware! If in doubt ring me and we can go through it. Until next time Sarge

Council sets policy to support domestic violence victims A new Council policy provides support for domestic violence victims and their families.

“This is an unacceptable level of domestic violence against both women and men.

Mayor Anne Baker said the policy puts in place a confidential set of support services for employees.

“Based on these figures, with 400 employees, 200 of those women, we know some of our workforce would be victims of abuse.

“Isaac Regional Council recognises our employees are not immune to this national issue. “The Queensland Government’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Strategy show the disturbing statistics.” “We know one in six Australian women has experienced physical abuse at the hands of a current or former partner.” “One in 19 Australian men has experienced physical abuse at the hands of a partner,” said Mayor Baker. “One in four Australian women has experienced emotional abuse at the hands of a partner.

“Council through this policy is demonstrating its commitment to supporting those living with violence. “Serious impacts of domestic violence include physical, emotional and psychological harm.” Mayor Baker said the policy will help those in need by providing more leave and individual support. “Through the Employee Assistance Program, they will also have free access to trained professionals.” “With support, employees can continue their contribution to both council and the community.”
