Join in NAIDOC Week celebrations There’s still time to take part in 2015 NAIDOC week celebrations in Clermont.

On Friday (July 17) at 9am, join in a free Cultural Safety Workshop with Guest Speaker Richard Frankland and enjoy a performance by the Weirdi Binbi Traditional Owners and Saima Dance Group on at the Civic Centre.

A Community Dinner with live entertainment and DJ is on 6pm Friday night (July 17) and everyone is welcome.

Entry is $10.

If a family day out is more up your alley, come along to Centenary Park on Saturday morning (July 18). A Parade and Cultural Fun Day starts at 9am. There’ll be traditional dance, parade, live entertainment, stalls and a closing ceremony at 1.45pm.

Traditional Owner Elizabeth McAvoy has run a busy program during this week, celebrating indigenous culture

with our community. Traditional Owners, Elders, Mayor Anne Baker, Isaac Region Councillors and community attended an Opening Ceremony on Monday which included a flag raising ceremony, dance, didgeridoo playing and bush tucker samples during morning tea and lunch.

The schools have enjoyed visits and performances from traditional dance troupe the Weirdi Binbi Traditional Owners Group and learnt about this year’s NAIDOC Week Theme ‘We All Stand On Sacred Ground – Learn, Respect and Celebrate’.

Free digital mapping workshops to help CQ landholders in resource negotiations

Developing a property computer map will be the focus of workshops in Central Queensland, to help landholders in negotiations with resource companies.

CSG Project Leader Daniel Phipps said the workshops are important for landholders, not only in relation to property planning but also as a tool in negotiations with CSG or mining companies.

“Our workshops teach landholders how a property map can help in negotiating where and when a resource company conducts their activity on their property, as well as how a map can assist in establishing fair compensation,” Mr Phipps said.

“Resource companies may provide a map of their proposed infrastructure on a landholder’s property. A property map helps define boundaries and puts landholders in the best possible position to negotiate a favourable outcome.”

Not only are property maps a useful tool in negotiations with resource companies, but are also important for landholders wanting to improve property planning, take part in coordinated pest control or achieve Grazing Best Management Practice (BMP) standards.

“Property computer mapping allows landholders to explore their property from an aerial viewpoint, which helps with property planning, grazing strategies or even improving productivity,” Mr Phipps said.

“Specifically landholders can plot property boundaries, create buffer zones around watering points to reduce grazing pressure or manage vegetation. A comprehensive property map can help landholders achieve so much in regards to improving property management.”

Landholders will have the opportunity at the workshop to start on their own property maps and take their work home on USB along with a trial version of Phoenix Mapping to help them get started on comprehensively mapping their property.

Health Matters contributed by Jackie Martin One of the great things about living in a community like Clermont is that when it comes to health care and health prevention, all service providers are willing and able to work together to provide the best, and most holistic support for an individual’s health journey. The Clermont MPHS, including the Community Health team and HACC service, are very fortunate to have a great health collaborator in our local pharmacist, Grant Oswald. He is part of the team that looks after you. On top of that, he is a big supporter of looking after your ‘being well’ journey.

The Clermont Amcal Pharmacy (like them on facebook) will often share messages or ideas regarding health and beauty.

Making decisions and your health and happiness Did you know that it is now less than 6 months to go until Christmas? I know that you didn’t want to hear that and probably half of you have stopped reading already but rest assured this week is not about the festive season, I just thought it would be an eye opener for us all.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Our lives just seem to be filled with a constant stream of decisions. A study from the Columbia University found that we actually make an average of 70 decisions a day. From simple ones like what to wear or what to eat to more complex ones like moving to a new town or should we have a 3rd child (that’s a definite NO sorry Jen). With so many decisions to make each and every day, learning to prioritise them and make them effectively is essential to our health and happiness.

Here’s some tips and pointers that may make that decision making process a little easier for you: Turn small decisions into routines Decision making works like a muscle: as you use it more and more, it gets too exhausted to function effectively. One of the ways that people get around this is to turn smaller decisions into routine. Steve Jobs (Apple founder) wore a black turtleneck to work every day and Barack Obama has said “You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing because I have too many other decisions to make” So ladies deciding what to wear each day is not the biggest decision of your day!

Make big decisions in the morning Save small decisions for after work and tackle complex decisions in the morning. A similar strategy is to do some of the smaller things the night before to get a head start on the next day. For instance, lay out your outfit at night so you don’t even have to think about it when you wake up.

Pay attention to your emotions There is an old saying: “Don’t make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions.” Successful people recognise and understand their emotions so that they are able to look at decisions as objectively and rationally as possible.

I guess what I am saying here is don’t make a decision to go to the pub just after you’ve had a fight with your wife – the repercussions could be major!

Use exercise to recharge The stress of a major decision naturally produces cortisone, the chemical that triggers the fight-or-flight response.

Cortisone clouds your ability to think clearly and rationally.

When you find yourself stressing about a decision, try exercising. As little as 30 minutes is all it takes to get a good endorphin-fueled buzz and return to mental clarity.

Always go back to your moral compass Successful people know the importance of sticking to their morals when making an important decision. Morals serve as trusted guides when your emotions are pulling you in a different direction.

Bringing it all together With repercussions that can last days, weeks and even years, making great decisions is an effort that worth every bit of your time and energy.

I hope that this gives you a few tips to help that decision making process a little easier and your lives a little happier. I guess to summarise, don’t sweat the small stuff and rely on your moral compass when it really matters.

Now, for my big decision of the day – should I have a beer tonight or would a red wine go better with that Lamb curry that we’re having for dinner?

Raising Dust and DollarsTM – The Great Endeavour Rally The Great Endeavour Rally has been raising dust, dollars and disability awareness for more than 28 years and is set to roll into Clermont on July 20 – 21.

A community fundraising event ‘The Buffalo Show’ is on Monday July 20 from 6.30pm at the Rodeo Arena. It’s set to be a great night for a good cause, with young local talent performing and Clermont ‘superstars’ attempting the famous ‘Buffalo Mount’. There’s a small entry donation of $5 for adults. Isaac Regional Council is a proud sponsor of the event and invites the community to come along and show their support.

The 28th Queensland Rally is on from 17-25 July and will tour from Redcliffe to Rockhampton via the Whitsundays. Its aim is to raise vital funds to support the needs of individuals along the rally route. To date, more than $8.5 million has been raised making a real difference to the lives of people with a disability.

Public notice Landscaping and tree felling works, Clermont

Council is pleased to be undertaking a series of landscaping and tree felling works across Clermont starting Monday July 13 and extending throughout August.

The Clermont Entrance Precinct Roundabout will be greatly enhanced with the planting of large shrubs and bottle trees, feature boulders and landscaped gardens, scheduled to occur over a number of weeks.

Garden beautification works around Clermont will heighten appeal along Capella Street, at the Clermont Library, Mural Train and around the shelter at Hoods Lagoon.

Council has engaged contractors to undertake tree felling in areas around town to minimise impact to overhead power lines and remove dead branches.

Residents are advised that there may be minor impacts to traffic while some works are underway.

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions and these sessions are a good way to connect with parents and young children. THUMP Boxing is a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane.

While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

We shoot on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. Arrive at range at 9.30am and commence shooting at 10am. Anyone who is interested in shooting rifles or pistols are welcome to attend.

Workout Of the Day (WOD) This is a board based program, working TO the principles of H.I.I.T where you can come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T? High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Twenty-seven holes of the Club Championships have been completed and leading the A Grade is Stephen Maguire closely followed by Jamie Beale. Leading the B Grade is Kym Williams and Peter Bleakley is the leader in the C Grade.

27 hole nett event was won by Stephen Maguire with runners up Jamie Beale and George Olzard.

Open pin shot went to Harry Waerea and approach shots to John Anderson, Gary Manion and Steve Dargin.
