CLERMONT RAG FRIDAY, 6 NOVEMBER 2020
ENERGY OF CLERMONT’S YOUTH TO POWER UP LOCAL PROGRAM The power of generating ideas and creating the Youth Week program is now in the hands of Isaac’s young people aged 12 to 25. An expression of interest has been released by Isaac Regional Council to encourage Clermont youth to collaborate, be empowered and share their skills and talent. Mayor Anne Baker said Council strongly and genuinely believes in the creative power of Isaac’s local youth. “Youth Week is an event for our youth and who better to help shape the creative activities and events for the region?” Mayor Baker said. “We are calling young crafters, creators, tinkers and big thinkers who would be interested in helping us build a Youth Week program for 2021. “Those interested will have the chance to

build their resume and expand their skill sets by providing art works for gallery displays, performing at events or running art/creative/ manual skills workshops for other young people. “Or have the chance to learn how you can turn your creative passion into a sustainable business career plus assist with event planning and logistics. “Your work will be recognised with a letter outlining your participation efforts for you to keep and add to your resume.” Isaac’s very own version of Queensland Youth Week – a free initiative - is being launched in April next year. Expressions of interest, which end on 20 November, are being encouraged through Council’s new online engagement platform at speakup.isaac.qld.gov.au or call 1300 ISAACS.
CLOSE TO $750,000 INJECTED INTO ISAAC REGION’S LOCAL COMMUNITIES Small to medium businesses and community groups have been given a local cash injection of nearly $750,000 to help get back on their feet in the face of COVID-19. Isaac Regional Council’s local economic response has helped 70 small to medium businesses and 25 community groups that have genuinely demonstrated hardship. Mayor Anne Baker said Council is committed to supporting its local communities during the pandemic and the ongoing economic instability. “We’re a diverse and fiercely independent region that has risen to this once-in-a-lifetime social and economic challenge,” she said. “Through these incredibly tough times, your hard work in the Isaac region has been vital in maintaining both the Queensland and Australian economies. “Some of our own small businesses, families and individuals have faced hardship and we will continue to support our communities as and when needed. “Our Council officers have been providing oneon-one business and community group health checks as we continue to support our mum-anddad enterprises through these difficult times.” The Isaac Community Chest Fund – made possible through Anglo American BHP, Civeo and Aquila Resources/South32 – has already distributed almost $500,000 to 70 small to medium businesses across Isaac. More than 25 payments totalling nearly $100,000 have been approved from the Special Emergency Community Grants. These initiatives make up Council’s Road to COVID-19 Recovery Stimulus Packages program. Close to $150,000 has also been injected into the community economy, by waiving rents on all not-for-profit community leases, partially waiving development fees for 12 months and the development of the Shop Isaac program. Mayor Baker said in addition to helping businesses remain on their feet, a push to build stronger community and business connection had been launched through Shop Isaac.
“This promotion is really taking off and redirecting spend into the region. More than 100 businesses across retail, hospitality, automotive and tourism are currently registered,” she said. “Moranbah Discount Tyres & Mechanical, Stanmore Coal and Anglo American are major supporters, each purchasing 500 or more cards which are loaded with cash for spending at Isaac businesses, and we look forward to more industry partners coming on board. Council has also issued 430 cards to staff. “The program will be promoted strongly in Small Business Month activities throughout October.” Mayor Baker said in addition to supporting business members facing hardship and not-forprofit organisations, Council has now completed its Pandemic and Tactical Response Framework which has been in motion since March. “A total of 56 have been fully implemented through the Community Support and Wellbeing Package, Business Support and Stimulus Package and the Business and Community Support Compliance Response Package,” she said. “We have addressed and managed our own business continuity, our disaster management structure, identifying the community support and our business community support.” Mayor Baker said Council had extended rate concessions to Not-for-Profit organisations under the existing policy to provide 100 per cent relief on all charges effective 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020. “We have continued to freeze on charging rents for community leases to not-for-profit community groups under stress for the 2020-21 financial year,” she said. Mayor Baker said Council is well advanced in developing its Strategic COVID Recovery Plan which is scheduled for adoption in late October. “This plan will lead on from the earlier Tactical COVID Response Framework and will focus on the recovery themes of community resilience, economic and business resilience, ongoing disaster recovery and ongoing Council sustainability to support this work long into the future,” Mayor Baker said.
ISAAC INTRODUCES MY COMMUNITY DIRECTORY Isaac Regional Council has partnered with My Community Directory and Diary, an Australiawide online searchable directory to help locals find hobbies, volunteer opportunities, health information and community events. Mayor Baker said the initiative will help Isaac residents better connect by finding up to date data on businesses, services and events in their local communities. “There are hundreds of local community groups and services on the website, which receives thousands of hits each month,” Mayor Baker said. Mayor Baker encouraged local community groups to list their details with the directory to take advantage of all the platform has to offer. “If you’re a local service, non-profit organisation or a community group, I encourage you to sign up to reach more Isaac residents, find volunteers and promote upcoming events and activities.” “The service is free and provides another avenue to market our many wonderful services,
community groups and events we host across our region,” Mayor Baker said. As part of Council’s partnership launch, Council hosted a free My Directory and Diary informational event in Clermont on Thursday 15 October. Clermont residents are encouraged to keep up to date with information and upcoming events about this service at www.mycommunitydirectory. com.au/queensland/isaac or call Council’s 24/7 Customer Service Centre on 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227).
NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR THE 2020 ISAAC REGION AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS Nominations for those who truly embody Isaac’s mantra of pure people power are now open for the 2021 Isaac Region Australia Day Awards. Residents are encouraged to nominate their community champion, the quiet go-getter or perhaps the humble hero by Sunday, 30 November 2020. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the annual awards are an opportunity to acknowledge and say thanks to some of the region’s most noteworthy residents. “We are region rich in resources, but we are also blessed with the greatest resource of all - our people,” Mayor Baker said. “The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that even though we have to stay apart at times, human connection in communities is ever so important. “We continue to show that our pure people power is helping our communities to thrive as we continue to help energise the world. In Isaac, we’re used to meeting new people and no-one stays a stranger for long. “We enjoy sharing our enthusiasm and pride of our region with each other and this is the chance to celebrate that person we all think highly of.” Mayor Baker said the awards are a chance to honour those individuals, groups and organisations who have made a significant contribution to our social, civic, sporting and cultural life locally, nationally and internationally.
“Nominees can be from all walks of life from youth, to community groups, to senior citizens,” she said. “We want to shine a light on the outstanding achievements of everyday people who make us proud to be Australian.” Nominations for the 2021 Isaac Australia Day Awards are now open until Sunday, 30 November, 2020. Regional Awards: o Citizen of the Year (age 27+) o Young Citizen of the Year (aged 16-26) o Community Event of the Year o Corporate Community Contribution of the Year Local Awards - Individual or Group Achievement Medallions: o Sport o Achievement o Culture/Arts o Community Business Medallion To nominate a deserving local, go to speakup.isaac.qld.gov.au or visit any Council office for a nomination form. PUBLIC NOTICES 2020-21 FLYING FOX SEASON UPDATE #1, ISAAC REGION - 7 OCTOBER Isaac Regional Council advises it is monitoring several flying fox roost locations across the Isaac region.
We have adopted a Statement of Management Intent to guide its management of flying foxes in the Isaac region.
Flying foxes migrate into the Isaac region townships between September and April each year which is a part of a greater yearly migration across the Australian eastern coast.
Since its adoption, Council has saved ratepayers over $200,000 per annum in costs associated with management of flying fox roosts.
Flying foxes are protected wildlife in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, with some species classified as endangered. It’s important to note that Australian flying foxes DO NOT carry COVID-19 following several enquiries made to Council this season. Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community. If your property has been a popular roosting site for flying foxes in the past, and they haven’t yet arrived in 2020, we recommend taking proactive vegetation management activities to deter flying foxes from roosting in your backyard. The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees prior to arrival of the flying foxes, commonly mature Mango, Fig, or Poinciana species. Little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalypts, palm and other trees. Flying fox roost management needs to be undertaken in accordance with the Queensland Government’s Department of Environment and Science (DES) guidelines and codes of practice. Information is available on the below link: https://bit.ly/374liXs
Dispersal activities have no guarantee of success, and potentially spread roosts over a larger area or shift roosts from public lands into private backyards. CLERMONT Little Red flying foxes have roosted at Centenary Park on 21 September 2020. Current numbers are estimated at around 1500 animals, with fluctuations in numbers experienced over the previous week. The Centenary Park roost is protected as it is used by the Little Red flying foxes for breeding and the rearing of their young. This brings additional considerations and responsibilities for management of the roost. Initial approved vegetation trimming recently occurred within Centenary Park to improve park amenity and to manage risks of falling tree limbs associated with highdensity roost. Further works are scheduled in coming weeks to undertake additional vegetation management activities within Queensland Government’s DES guidelines. Council’s vegetation management activities of roost trees are capped at 10 per cent of the canopy, per annum, in accordance with the DES Code of Practice for low impact activities affecting flying-fox roosts.
BIN COLLECTION INFORMATION STICKERS LIFT THE LID ON WASTE Isaac Regional Council would like to encourage residents across the Isaac region to Lift the Lid on Waste and know what items can go in red or yellow lidded bins to ensure bin collection. Council’s Waste Management Services is introducing Bin Information stickers which will help the Waste Collection Truck drivers notify residents if there was an issue with emptying their bin. To ensure bins are emptied on the dedicated day in your street, residents are asked to ensure their bin: •
isn’t too heavy (contents under 75kg)
•
isn’t overfilled (lid must be closed)
•
doesn’t contain non-recyclable waste
•
is an authorised Council bin (contact Council for info)
If the Waste Collection Truck is unable to empty a bin for any of the above reasons, residents will receive a Bin Collection Information sticker on the bin with details included from the driver. Residents are encouraged to get in touch with Council to arrange another suitable bin collection time. For more information on Council’s Waste Management Services, including tips on what items go in which bin, and recycling and waste kurbside collection days for your town, visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/wastemanagement-facilities or call 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227)
PUBLIC NOTICES WATER RESTRICTIONS ADVISORY - LEVEL 2, CLERMONT, EFFECTIVE FROM 14 SEPTEMBER 2020 Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents that Level 2 water restrictions came into effect from Monday, 14 September 2020. This is the trigger for Level 2 water restrictions. Residents will be notified through Council’s website, Facebook page, next edition of the Clermont Rag and a letterbox drop to reaffirm these restrictions. We encourage residents to share this important message with their families, friends, workmates and neighbours. LEVEL 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS For residential users •

Applications for an exemption must describe use and volumes required. Exemption approval will be based on social, health, environmental or economic considerations. Standpipes will not be accessible without an exemption from Monday, 14 September 2020. An application for exemption for mobile water tankers in water restrictions is available for download at Council’s website.
