New date set for Council’s plant and fleet auction It’s back on - the new date is now set for Isaac Regional Council’s Fleet and Plant auction in Clermont - Wednesday October 7 – from 10am. Roads, Fleet and Depot Activities Committee Chair Geoff Bethel said there’s now something for everyone from pallets of spare parts and handy materials to heavy equipment. “Council undertook a complete review of its fleet and plant across the region and after the significant interest found more items to add to the auction.” “As part of a review to ensure our fleet and plant pool is cost-effective and

efficient in delivering core programs and services, surplus items were identified,” he said. “Council decided to host the auction in the region so our residents, local businesses, community groups, organisations and producers would have the opportunity to buy and benefit.” “Everything is expected to sell on the day with the auction proceeds to be reinvested back into Council services.” “More than 100 items from cars, boats and trailers to loaders, rollers and mowers, some with reserves below cost, will be auctioned by NASCO Auctioneers.”

Isaac welcomes proven local government leader Isaac Regional Council has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), highly experienced and proven local government leader, Rod Ferguson. Mayor Anne Baker said Council warmly welcomes Rod, who has demonstrated his ability to lead diverse teams to new levels of accomplishment in results driven, ever-changing and customer focused environments. “With more than two decades experience as CEO across three local governments, (Kolan Shire, Warwick Shire and Southern Downs Regional Councils) Rod is a well-known, proven and capable local government leader. “Council selected a candidate with strong, proven leadership skills and the right qualities, experience and attributes to meet the needs of the organisation and Isaac communities.

“Rod brings a strong knowledge of regional local government in Queensland along with a passion for strong governance, financial stability and accountability.” “With the recent adoption of our 20 Year Community Strategic Plan, 5 Year Corporate Plan and 2015-16 Budget, Rod joins Council at an ideal time to drive the delivery of Council programs and services across the region,” Mayor Baker said. “Council acknowledges the hard work and achievements of Graham Webb, who has been Acting Chief Executive Officer since January this year.” New CEO Rod Ferguson said he was looking forward to working with Council and staff of the Isaac region in continuing to provide a high level of services to the community.

Regional arts grant funding opens Isaac Regional Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants are now open with young and emerging artists encouraged to apply. The RADF grants aim to increase arts and cultural opportunities for regional young people, and to support emerging artists and cultural workers. Mayor Anne Baker said the RADF supported all arts and cultural disciplines.

“Over 30 RADF grants were funded last year spanning across photography, writing, singing, professional development, community festivals and workshops,” she said. “This year we are encouraging youth and emerging artists to apply, especially those living in rural areas.” The Isaac RADF grants will be offered in two rounds this financial year. Round One is open now until September 18.

Round Two will open from March 21 to April 18, 2016. New RADF application forms and guidelines apply, available on Council’s website at www.isaac.qld.gov.au or by visiting a Council Office or library. RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. AgForce Projects workshops to help graziers achieve best management practice standards AgForce Projects will deliver property computer mapping workshops in Central Queensland, aimed at helping graziers improve on-property outcomes and assist those wishing to achieve above industry standards. AgForce Projects GIS technical officer Noel Brinsmead said not only will the workshops help graziers wanting to improve their on-farm practice but the workshops will be of benefit to all experience levels. “Our workshops walk graziers through from the basics of using the program up to setting up a computer map that can be as comprehensive as the user wants it to be. Any farmer that already has a property map is still encouraged to attend, as regularly updating your map and understanding the tools involved ensures your maps ongoing usefulness for you and your property.” Mr Brinsmead said the workshops were not only important for graziers involved in Grazing BMP, but mapping is important for all graziers interested in improving productivity and sustainability outcomes. “The more comprehensive the map, the more it can assist with improve productivity and profitability. Maps can even be used to set carrying capacities, planning infrastructure, vegetation management, or managing weeds and pest animals. Comprehensive property maps are an indispensable tool, not just for graziers but all producers,” Mr Brinsmead said. “To achieve recognition as being above industry stand in the Grazing BMP program a grazier must be using computer mapping to achieve above industry standards.

I encourage graziers within the Fitzroy Basin Association (FBA) area to take advantage of the opportunity to attend one of our nationally accredited workshops while the opportunity is still available to claim back up to 70% of the cost of the workshop back through the Fitzroy Basin Association.” Attendees who complete the workshop will also receive a statement of attainment for unit ‘Produce maps for land management purposes’ which can be put towards a Certificate IV in Conservation and Land Management. We’re flying into fox season It’s that time of year when little red flying foxes set flight for the Isaac region in search of food and a shady tree, sometimes in the tens of thousands.

“I encourage residents to come along to our information sessions; it’s helpful for both children and adults to know what to do during flying fox season,” said Mayor Baker.

Isaac Regional Council is inviting the community to know what to do if flying foxes camp-up in residential areas.

Council’s information sessions will run from September 15 to 30 at local libraries, and will include both a day and evening session in Moranbah and Middlemount.

Council’s Environmental Team is holding free information sessions ‘Flying Foxes – My Children, My Pets, My Livestock’ in all Isaac Libraries during September with residents encouraged to attend. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the community played an important role in flying fox management. “Flying foxes are a necessary part of our landscape and the best way to manage them is in a coordinated approach,” she said. “If you see them, contact our Environmental Services Team and let them rest, do not disrupt them.”

Take in your washing at night Park your car underneath shelter to avoid flying-fox droppings Consider lights under trees in your yard Keep children away ‘do not touch’ Keep pets under shelter at night Ensure your horses are appropriately vaccinated

Flying foxes are a protected species vital for the pollination of our region’s native ecosystem. Disrupting flying foxes without a permit is illegal. August marks the start of the flying fox migration through the Isaac landscape and up until December flying foxes can take up camp in townships. In the unlikely event you are scratched or bitten by a flying fox seek medical attention immediately. You should apply about one teaspoon per limb, one each for the front and back of the torso, and one for the face and neck. That’s a total of seven teaspoons.

Skimping on sunscreen sells your skin short

But very few of us take a teaspoon to the beach.

Sunscreen is sold in containers of all different shapes and sizes, but the 110 ml tube is a popular choice. So, how long should a 110 ml tube of sunscreen last you? If you’ve used it more than three times to cover your whole body say, at the beach, then you haven’t been using enough for proper protection.

Like painting a brick wall

If you think sunscreen doesn’t work as well as it should, it might be that you’re not using enough.

It is helpful to think of applying sunscreen well to trying to paint a brick wall, where the mortar between the bricks sits at a lower level.

The SPFs, acronym refers to the length of time it takes for your skin to burn when you are in the sun while wearing sunscreen, however it assumes that you are applying the correct amount. Research shows people typically use only 25 to 75 per cent of the amount used by testers in the process that determines the SPF number on the container. Since the protection factor varies with the amount of sunscreen applied, that means most users probably achieve a level of protection 20 to 50 per cent of that expected from the SPF on the label. So your SPF50 might really giving be you as little as SPF10. Teaspoon at the beach? Advice given by health experts about how much sunscreen to use is often given in ‘teaspoons’.

To understand why the amount of sunscreen matters, you need to recognise the surface of skin is not smooth but has lots of tiny dips and grooves on it. You need to apply enough sunscreen to fill those dips.

Two coats of paint are almost always needed for satisfactory coverage. With the first coat, the dips between the bricks where the mortar is can still be seen. It’s often only with a further application that the mortar lines are covered and the surface becomes more featureless. In an ideal world, this would mean applying a second sunscreen coat 15 to 20 minutes after the first coat has been applied, allowing “time for the first coat to bind to the skin and dry a little and penetrate slightly deeper into the skin. Further reapplication of sunscreen is needed after vigorous activity that could remove sunscreen, such as swimming, towelling, excessive sweating and rubbing.

Dads and granddads are also good role models to encourage children to read as Dads and Granddads who Read are Legends. Dads Read is a State Library of Queensland program which the Isaac Libraries support and aims to raise the importance and benefits to fathers and families of reading with their children, particularly in their early developmental years. Reading to children for 10 minutes makes a difference. For more information about the ‘Dads Read’ program, visit the website at http://dadsread.org.au Get into in2Era In2Era is a free library e-resource available through the Isaac Libraries link on the Isaac Regional Council’s webpage. In2Era is a database of picture and Early Literacy Books online, aimed at children aged three to 10 years. In2Era has more than 200 titles with Australian narration and children can listen to the story, read along with the narrator and create storyboard pictures using the books own characters and themes. You don’t need a personal account to access in2Era, just follow the links to in2Era via the council’s website: www.issac.qld.gov.au/e-resources. Digi-bingo draws a crowd Clermont Library’s Seniors Week Digi-bingo and Morning Tea, held recently during Seniors Week, was an outstanding success with 23 seniors attending, including five Capella ladies. The guests had fun playing several rounds of Digibingo and learning about Information Technology symbols. Digi-bingo is like ordinary bingo but uses pictures of Information Technology symbols, such as Windows, Wi-Fi, Google Chrome and Podcast instead of numbers.

QCWA News

Rhymetime is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

A very enjoyable morning was held at our recent Seniors Citizens Hoy Morning tea. For some it was the first time playing hoy but all found it a lot of fun. Thanks to Betty Murphy for helping with the calling again and our members for supplying a delicious Devonshire tea.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years.

Plans are well underway for our 90th birthday celebrations on Saturday September. 12 Tickets are available at Ornabellas. We are hoping all of Clermont will support us by purchasing a ticket or organising a table. Tickets are $40 each. Time Laps and Danny McKay are supplying the music and Coast2Coast are catering with a two course meal. A great night is assured. A bar will be operating as well.

Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

Playgroup If you have children under 5 and would like to get out and meet other mums and children, you are always welcome at playgroup on Wednesday mornings (during the school term) at 9.15am in the Clermont State School Hall. On the night we hope to acknowledge all former presidents by displaying photos of these ladies so we are looking for photos of these ladies to display. We would appreciate if any members of the public who know if their mother, grandmother or great grandmother was involved with our local branch that they will contact us with a photo. We are also holding an auction and would appreciate any donations or items to auction. All proceeds from our night will go to two worthy charities, Monty’s Foundation (a charity set up to support families in rural areas that have a child with a terminal illness access respite care at home) and Blaze Aid (an organisation which supports rural families with fencing etc after a natural disaster).

Fifteen vets played a stroke competition and the winner was Olly Faros with run downs to Lee Gordon, Bill Moller and Glenda Rieck. Least putts 14 to Bill Moller and Alan McGuiness. Vets hit off at 2pm every Thursday and visitors are welcome. Vets please note we will be competing for the Roy McKewin Memorial Shield on Thursday September 24. This will be a 12 hole competition at 9am with BBQ lunch to follow.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. Workout Of the Day (WOD) This is a board based program, working TO the principles of H.I.I.T where you can come in and complete the workout in your own time. What is H.I.I.T? High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open Gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets Lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRIT This is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development. THUMP Boxing is a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.
