COMMUNITY-MINDED WOMAN STEPS FORWARD AS DIVISION 6 COUNCILLOR A local Clermont business identity has been sworn in as the appointed Division 6 Isaac Regional Councillor at Moranbah Chambers. Cr Carolyn Moriarty read and signed the Declaration of Office in an official ceremony flanked by family members and friends in front of Mayor Anne Baker, fellow Councillors, CEO Jeff Stewart-Harris and senior officers. The position for Division 6 had been vacated following the passing in July of the late Lynette Jones, who was a much-respected Clermont community member. Cr Moriarty is a mother, a former teacher and community-minded person, and has said she is looking forward to representing the region. “I feel truly honoured to be working with Council to help our communities flourish and future-proof our region by attracting new and diverse industry to the area,” Cr Moriarty said.

Mayor Anne Baker said Cr Moriarty was elected after running unopposed in a recent by-election. “We are thrilled to welcome Cr Moriarty to the position of Division 6 Councillor,” Mayor Baker said. “It is wonderful to see Cr Moriarty and her family ready to make a commitment to improving the region through her dedication and work in the community.” Cr Moriarty has a diverse background that includes tourism and education and supports the Clermont community as the secretary of the Clermont Community Business Group and treasurer of the Clermont Bears. She currently works for a business supporting the mining industry in Clermont and the wider region and has a long establishment with the surrounding communities. Isaac Regional Council Division 1 Councillor Greg Austen said the resilient community of Clermont has been hit with grief and tragedy over the last few months. “For active communities like Clermont where everyone knows each other, these dramatic and challenging circumstances can leave the community reeling with despair and grief,” Cr Austen said. “This is why it is important to head out for a date with your mates, check-up on each other, get resources to help and have a laugh.” The evening will be directed by Clermont pharmacist Grant Oswald, and will feature special guest speakers, Leon Christiansen, “The Mind Renovator” and Ros Waters, a columnist for the Clermont Telegraph “The Pursuit of Happiness” with a special video message to

the Clermont community from Ed and Dan at TradeMutt. There will be free nibbles and pizza for all attending and a jumping castle for the kids to enjoy while the grown-ups have some muchneeded time to interact with others and feel the inclusion of a strong and proud community. LEGENDARY LEAGUE JUGGERNAUTS NAMED FOR ISAAC CLASH A plethora of former rugby league juggernauts have been named ahead of a charity match in the Isaac region next month. From a Brisbane Broncos CEO to one of Moranbah’s favourite sons, Isaac Regional Council Acting Mayor Kelly Vea Vea was on hand today with the International Legends of League line-up announcement. Cr Vea Vea said during the launch at Darryl Bourke Oval that the Team of NRL Legends and Isaac Region All Stars will draw league fans from across the region on 18 September. The local All Stars expected to run onto the Moranbah paddock are Travis Norton, Josh Hannay, Jamie McMillan, Michael Eve, Perry Mason, Jay Sabbo, Wayne Sing, Shaun Macklin, Ben Walsh, Joshua Earl, Jimmy Leeder, Craig Baguley, Damian Cavanagh, Pat Prkarier, Mark Finlay, Luke Goodale, Dylan Patteson, Brad

Peterson, Jimmy Ahmat, James Kimber, Dale Bloomfield, Justin McKay, Paul Pyziakos, Luke Reynolds and Joel Hopes. Paul White and Frank Baker have both been named as co-coaches for the Isaac Region All Stars. The exhibition game is set to kick off at 6pm with tickets available at Miners Leagues Club, Moranbah on 18 September as gates open at 1pm featuring various grades between Moranbah, Emerald and Dysart. Legends of League representative Craig Teevan said the highlight for players will be visiting Moranbah, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden,

Clermont and Nebo schools ahead of the exhibition match. “This program is about raising awareness of mental health issues and deliver football coaching clinics,” Mr Teevan said. “They will talk about bullying, the potential dangers of social media, youth suicide, health, exercise and promoting self-confidence and wellbeing through their dream, believe, achieve philosophy.” The event is also proudly supported by Community Mental Wellness Partner, the Queensland Government.

THE NUTS AND (BLUE MOUNTAIN) BOLT OF MIDDLEMOUNT’S 40TH Father’s Day morning is set to scale new heights in the final item of Middlemount’s 40th celebrations program on Sunday, 5 September. The Blue Mountain Bolt is a hill climb challenge for participants of all ages to sprint, jog or walk from the Middlemount Sportsground up to Blue Mountain Park and back. Isaac Regional Council Division 7 Councillor Jane Pickels said the 4.3km course offered some great views, regardless of how quickly it was scaled. “Sport is a huge part of our Isaac culture and being part of the Bolt, as either a competitor or spectator, is not only a fantastic way to start the day but also a wonderful way to celebrate the great Middlemount spirit,” Cr Pickels said. “There will be awards for first, second and third place in Open and Junior Men’s and Open and Junior Women’s categories, with all preregistered entrants taking home a memento of the day. “And if style is more your speed, we’re also awarding a special $100 Shop Isaac gift card to the best-dressed entrant.” Cr Pickels is calling on anyone interested in participating to make a weekend out of visiting Middlemount. “There has never been a better time to make a trip with the family to Middlemount.

“The Blue Mountain Bolt is the last activity in a long list of festivities for Middlemount’s 40th birthday weekend, from Friday, 3 September to Sunday, 5 September, for every member of the family.” The Blue Mountain Bolt is being presented in conjunction with Move It NQ and is kicking off at 8am on Sunday, 5 September. Check-in for participants is open from 7am to 7.40am at the Middlemount Sportsground. Participants are encouraged to pre-register at speakup.isaac. qld.gov.au/bluemountainbolt. Following the event, a BBQ breakfast will be available back at the Middlemount Sportsground for all participants and their cheerleaders. Cr Pickels said events like the Bolt help our communities to thrive. “We are so lucky to have such energetic communities and the people that make them amazing. “Events like this and the Middlemount 40th celebrations require a lot of planning and preparation and a great deal of people power to bring to life. DEMOLITION OF OLD AMENITY BLOCK, CLERMONT SPORTING FIELDS Isaac Regional Council advises the demolition of the old amenity block at Clermont Sporting Fields will begin on: Wednesday, 1 September 2021 Expected to be completed in three days Weather permitting This will involve the demolition and removal of the structurally damaged, concrete toilet block adjacent to the newly constructed block. Public safety around this demolition is a Council priority with barricades and signage being constructed. Every effort is being made to minimise disruptions to the community and key user groups.

The newly constructed Clermont Sporting Fields amenity block is completed and open for use by authorised local sporting clubs. This is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program in association with Isaac Regional Council. CATTLE DROVING ON GREGORY DEVELOPMENT ROAD, CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council wishes to advise residents and motorists that a drover has been permitted under the Stock Route Management Act 2002 to be droving 1,500 head of stock: Starting at Belyando Crossing, heading down Gregory Developmental Road towards Clermont, through Fleurs Lane to Gregory Highway towards Capella From 3 September to 1 October 2021 All traffic travelling these roads are advised to be aware of the signage, slow down and take care around the cattle.

The Stock Route Network within the Isaac Region is a valuable asset. The network is utilised for moving large herds of cattle on foot across Queensland and provides a valuable feed asset during times of drought. With much of the state still in drought, both graziers from within the Isaac region and from other areas are seeking much needed feed for their cattle to survive. STORY TIME CRAFT IS BACK! Story Time Craft is back but in a COVID-19 safe way. Clermont Library staff will prepare individual craft packs for each session to minimise sharing of craft resources. A craft pack will be given to every child attending Story Time and they and their parent/ caregiver can either do the craft activity at the library or take it home. Another change to Story Time is that there will now be one session a week due to low or nil attendance for the second session. But there is good news – this will allow Story Time to be extended to one hour and include craft again. Story Time and Craft will now be held on Fridays from 9.30am to 10.30am, starting today. Bookings are still essential due to Covid-19 restrictions.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers and men who are ‘father figures. If Dad or Granddad are history buffs, they might like a copy of Behold Nebo by George A Mayes which traces the history of the settlement and growth of the township of Nebo and the former Nebo Shire. Send dad or granddad on a time warp to colonial Queensland through the pages of Lyall Ford’s A Photographic Record of Colonial Queensland. A Photographic Record of Colonial Queensland features the work of professional photographer, John Henry Mills. John Henry Mills was a gold miner at Mount Britton, near Nebo, and captured the birth of the Mount Britton township. Photos of the early years of the Nebo district are also featured. The Clermont Library has copies of both books for sale.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT – PAMELA HART Pamela Hart started her writing career as a children’s scriptwriter for ABC Kids. She wrote children’s stories but also wanted to tell stories for adults. Hart developed an interest in historical fiction when she wrote ‘The Black Dress’, a fictional account of Saint Mary MacKillop’s childhood in Australia from the 1840s to 1860s. ‘The Black Dress’ won the NSW Premier’s History Prize in 2006. Hart has also written children’s fiction, epic fantasy, crime fiction and children’s poetry under the name Pamela Freeman. She has a Doctor of Creative Arts in Writing from the University of Technology, Sydney and teaches writing at the Australian Writers’ Centre.

SPORTS NEWS CLERMONT BEARS Clermont Bears went down to the Bluff Rabbitohs in the grand final at the weekend with a final score of 40-18. The boys put up a great fight but unfortunately didn’t come away with the win. Try scorers for Clermont Trent White, Jesse Johnson and Josh Wilkinson. Year 1: Digby Charles - The enthusiastic attitude you show towards your learning each and every day. Miss O’Leary loves the way you come in every morning with a wonderful smile on your face ready to start the day. Thank you for always shining bright in Year One. Charlie Church - Your enthusiasm you have demonstrated towards your verse speaking poems this week Your use of expression during rehearsals has blown Miss O’Leary and Mrs Hutton away. You are a superstar Charlie! Year 2: Summer McCormack - The wonderful effort you put into our mathematics lessons this week. Miss Kelly loved your participation in class discussions about fact families. You made wonderful connections between addition and subtractions sums and could confidently solve missing numbers of problems. Keep shining bright! Year 3: Layla Gouge - Your enthusiasm during English this week. You have worked well in your group and demonstrated your skills when hunting the text for your information report.
