TECH-SAVVY KIDS GET READY TO RUMBLE AT TECH FEST A team of technically-minded children from Clermont are set to show off their coding skills and knowledge in the ultimate robotics challenge on Saturday, September 8.

“STEM-related skills are highly sought after in a growing range of occupations globally and the Isaac Libraries Tech Fest gives children a solid foundation for future learning.”

Now in its third year, the 2018 Tech Fest being held at the Dysart Civic Centre is expected to attract a large crowd to witness six teams of children compete in the annual Lego Robotics Challenge.

Division 2 Councillor Nick Wheeler said Dysart is proud to host the Tech Fest for a third year. “We are excited to bring the teams together once again in Dysart to be part of this exciting challenge,” Cr Wheeler said.

Mayor Anne Baker said innovation and fun was at the mechanical heart of the challenge which has seen “This program could potentially provide the more than 40 children from the Isaac region take part launching pad for a future innovator, or spark the in a 10 week program leading up to the event. desire in a child to follow a career path in the field of “Council strongly supports opportunities for children robotics and digital technologies. to engage in innovative programs such as this that “We hope all the participants, volunteers and provide an interactive, educational experience that is spectators enjoy the event on September 8.” also a lot of fun,” she said. IN STEP WITH COMMUNITY ON CAPELLA ST FOOTPATH Improvements to the footpath between Herschel and Sirius streets are planned as part of Council’s 2018-19 Capital Works program, funded under the State Government’s Works For Queensland program. Mayor Anne Baker said the footpath upgrade would help Isaac Regional Council improve pedestrian safety in Capella St.

“We want to have a conversation with Capella St business operators and the community to ensure we capture and address, as much as possible, any concerns they may have,” she said. “This is Clermont’s town centre and we want community buy-in on the proposed outcomes, including issues such as the type of finish applied to new sections of footpath, within the limitations of the project budget.”

“Capella St is the commercial centre of Clermont. Upgrading the condition of the footpath will enhance A community information session about the project the amenity of this precinct and reduce the likelihood was held on Thursday, August 30 for business of slips, trips and falls,” she said. operators and residents. “We are also committed to minimising disruption and maintaining access to Capella St businesses while these planned improvements occur.” Mayor Baker said she encouraged the Clermont community to have a say on the project by providing feedback over the coming weeks.

CR LYN’S COLUMN Once again there has been a fair bit of activity within and around our town. I have always thought that if there were plenty of people eating out in our pubs and motels then maybe things are not too bad. Plenty of our grey nomads are still around and helping the economy of Clermont with their spending. A lot of small towns that look forward to the winter months so that they can benefit from our southern tourists. Our Gold and Coal Festival was a great hit with many, many stalls selling a lot of their wares and foods.

Friday saw some of the residents from Monash Lodge visit “Viviann’s” for morning tea and Sam was kind enough to give us all a lesson on how to arrange flowers. Thanks Sam, I can tell you, we all thoroughly enjoyed your hospitality and knowledge. Apparently, there is a great deal more to flower arranging than just sticking what flowers fit into a vase.

Big thank you to all of the organisers. It is a big job but I think when you see the number of people that turned up and had a great time, it must be very heartwarming to all concerned. We had a change of venue and meal option this year for our Senior’s Luncheon and it turned out very well. We celebrated Seniors Week at the Grand Hotel and many, many thanks to Leanne, her staff, and of course the cooks who provided the delicious luncheon. Big thank you to Hayley, and everyone else who made things go smoothly. I had the greatest time just catching up with everyone.

Axel had to stay home for this visit as Sam has a little dog called Jane that stays at the shop with her. I know that Axel would have loved to play with her, but he would be about 10 times her size so I am pretty sure the outing would not end well. By now, I am fairly certain that everyone that had an opinion about the removal of a few of our big trees from Karmoo and Douglass Street, should have done so. I had a look at the damage that these trees have done to the guttering, roads and footpaths and the encroachment of their roots on to people properties and I was taken aback. These trees would have been planted long before a lot of the infrastructure was done and probably no-one thought what damage they would do down the track. There are a number of these around our town that will have to be seriously looked at as they are also creating numerous problems. Wouldn’t it be lovely to see a few days of drenching rain that would benefit everyone. Don’t forget your dog registrations! Get in early and get a discount. That’s about it until next time .... Lyn

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY MAKES VIRTUAL SENSE CONTRIBUTED BY JOHN BURNETT, PRESIDENT ON BEHALF OF BELYANDO ENTERPRISE NETWORK INC

The Belyando Enterprise Network ‘Ideal Seniors Living Survey’ continues to encourage conversation in the Clermont community, with further group discussions and a ‘drop in’ session at the Wall Planning Office held this week. Renee Wall, coordinating the survey, is enthused by the number of surveys and diversity of ideas expressed so far. “We are now over halfway to our target for responses, and there is a mix of thoughts being expressed on whether to stay or leave our community in our senior years. One of the prominent concerns is access to appropriate medical care as we age, and the concept of a “Virtual Community” still needs further exploration,” advises Renee. The following is part of an article (from the Internet) ‘Village Model Fills Seniors’ Aging in Place Needs’ written in 2011 by Alyssa Gerace: The United States is facing the issue of a rapidly aging population that some say it is not prepared for in terms of housing and care, prompting a grassroots organization to start an initiative that allows seniors to remain in their communities and age in place. Beacon Hill Village sprouted up ten years ago, founded by local seniors who preferred staying at home and getting their needs met through their community as they aged, rather than going to alternatives such as nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Since then, the concept has caught on in dozens of states, with 55 villages and another 120 in development connected under the umbrella of the Village to Village Network, launched in 2010. This network rose out of Beacon Hill’s partnership with NCB Capital Impact, a non-profit investment organization that strives to provide access to longterm supports initiatives for seniors, among other programs. The villages typically have about 100 members and are generally small, non-profit, member driven organizations, usually run with just a few staff members and a lot of volunteer.

More than 90% of village members were aged 65 or older in 2010, and 87% owned their own homes, according to research from the University of California, Berkeley. Each village compiles a list of trusted local service providers according to needs dictated by village members, and members pay entrance fees, which can range from $25 to $1200 a year with an average of $350, in order to have access to that list, along with other membership perks, including social events and activities. John Burnett, BENI President, further explains this concept. “We are blessed in Clermont to have access to the excellent services already established for our elderly. Meals on Wheels, HACC, ‘Lagoona’, Senior Citizens and the Community Bus all contribute greatly to the quality of life for seniors. However, this new thinking around a ‘virtual village’ may be targeted specifically for our community by our community. As the number of seniors continues to grow in our region, there will be a greater need for our community to take control of their own destiny. access to electricians, plumbers, gardeners, carpenters and other necessary support services could all be available through one contact point. As we age, the loss of driving capacity creates its own isolation. It may also be possible to coordinate a transport system.” With over 70 people attending the Isaac region Seniors Luncheon at the Grand Hotel last week, it would seem the viability of such a group is achievable within our community. BENI would like to hear your thoughts on this concept through completion of the Ideal Seniors Living Survey, available from Wall Planning and Environment office, online, on at Clermont Pharmacy. If you would like to discuss this concept further or you would like more information, please contact Renee Wall 0488 552 530 or John Burnett 0438 588 581.

HISTORY OF THE ANGLICAN SPRINGTIME FAIR CONTRIBUTED BY MARGARET HENN

When the Anglican Springtime Fair and Cent Sale is held this Saturday, September 8 at the Anglican Hall, it will be the continuation of a lengthy tradition. A function of similar purpose and style has been organised at this time of year for over a century, although the details have been altered and adapted over the years. Originally the function was the Spring Flower Show and Fete held in early September to celebrate the end of winter, provide an opportunity for a friendly afternoon outing (and raise funds for the Church).

This continued for many years, altering and adapting as lifestyles and interests changed. Over the years, the number of stalls and the number of competitors dwindled but the event continued in roughly its original form for 100 years. It culminated in the Centenary Flower Show in 2007 which was a great occasion and strongly supported. Following this it was decided that the format needed to change to keep up with the times and Springtime Cent Sale and Fair was created. However the name and the format may have changed but the original intention of celebrating the end of winter, providing a friendly enjoyable afternoon outing and raising church funds continues. The afternoon tea will be as delicious and the atmosphere as friendly as it was in 1907.

For many years the Cut Flower competition was the focus of the event, although there was strong competition in other sections, Cookery, Jams, Sweets, Sewing, Art, Schoolwork and, most notably Vegetables. The vegetable section was strongly contested between the men of the community and Doors open at 1.30 and the range and quality of the judging usually ended with great hilarity in an prizes are excellent, so the organisers hope the 111 auction of the exhibits. As well as the competitions year old tradition is continued for yet another year. there were stalls selling similar products.

SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP CREATES CHAPPY SPACE CONTRIBUTED BY CLERMONT HIGH SCHOOL WORKPLACE PRACTICES STUDENTS, STUDENT LEADERS AND THE CLERMONT CHAPLAINCY

In Term 3 the fruit of much labour has finally been seen in what can be described as a collaborative venture between a group of Clermont High School students and Chaplain Helen Farrell, affectionately known as Chappy. Commencing in Term 2 with the help of Sharon Jansen who Co-ordinates the Certificate II Workplace Practices students, they teamed up to convert the space beside Chappy’s office. The project began as part of the student’s assignment in undertaking their Cert II, but has become more than just an assessment piece. Year 12 students Reece Messer, Cameron Zahl, Billie Pickering, Aiden Jeffrey and Lane Saal helped design the space which they appropriately named “Our Oasis”. The space was painted white with blue as an accent colour, then further lifted through the brilliant colours extended throughout the plants, mats and bean bags adding to the décor. Paint for the project was supplied by the School and furnishings and board games were then funded through the Local Chaplaincy Committee. Ms Jansen and Chappy Helen together came up with the idea, “wanting a central space for all students to feel welcome” Ms Jansen said. Mrs Allen-Ankins, Local Chaplaincy Committee Chair said, “this space reflects so much of what Chaplaincy is about – providing a place of inclusion where conversations are positive and encouraging, and where students can find support from Chappy for their social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing”. The area is to be used as a safe and pleasant place where students can chill out, play board games and chat with Chappy.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. OPEN GYM: This is your opportunity to use the gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training. LET’S LIFT: This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

PROGRAM METAPWR: MetaPWR is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body, involving your upper and lower body and core muscles.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.
