JUGS AND JOCKS

Grant Oswald - organiser of Jugs & Jocks, with guest speakers David Shillington and Garry Mills contributed by Grant Oswald

Jugs and Jocks 2019 has been run and was a fantastic success according to all of the feedback that I have received so far. Another sell out crowd of over 100 men turned up on the night of Thursday, November 15. There was a fantastic mixed group of men of all ages, from a 15 year old who came with his dad, right through to 80 year old men who had come along for the second running of Jugs & Jocks. Jake Passfield, as the Master of Ceremonies, got us underway with some very thought provoking statistics that as men in Australia, 1 in 2 men: • • •

have experienced a mental health problem have a chronic disease and do not get enough exercise.

The guest speakers that we had were Mr Garry Mills who was once a bodyguard for Prime Minister John Howard and ex-NRL, Queensland and Australian prop forward David Shillington. The speakers enthralled the crowd with their personal stories of adversity and triumph and shared some of their secrets from the dressing room and hotels of the world that have made them the men that they are today. After a short break, I joined Garry and David in a panel discussion that answered questions from the audience. The men of Clermont made the most of this opportunity and asked some very pertinent questions not just around the topic of mental health, but how to cope with life in general. The biggest message from the night was that it is okay to feel down, it is okay to not be yourself at all times, but the important thing for blokes to do is to have conversations that matter. By having conversations that matter, it is about opening up to your mates, your wife, your dad, your son and not only telling them how you are feeling, but also asking them how they are feeling. As blokes in the past, we have always been told to toughen up, get over things and not cry in public. This stigma is slowly changing and the way to a happy and healthy life is now to use some different life skills that weren’t ‘blokey’ in the past.

If David Shillington, a 115kg prop forward who gets tackled all day and tackles others for fun, can meditate, practice gratitude and empathy, then I am sure the rest of us mere mortals can too. I would like to share a couple of comments with you that were told to me since Jugs & Jocks version two. One gentleman came up to me and told me that on Wednesday night he had decided that he wasn’t coming. He was too busy, couldn’t be bothered and didn’t suffer from depression anyway. After his wife had told him in no uncertain terms that he was going, and after listening to the speakers and having a beer with his mates, he wanted to know where he could buy a ticket for next year’s event. Then a wife came into me the next day and said that as she was lying in bed listening to her son and husband come home, she overheard her 15 year old thank his dad for taking him along to his “best night ever”. It is comments like these which is why Jugs & Jocks was started in the first place and why it will belong on the Clermont calendar for some time yet. I would like to say a big thank you to our partners in this years event, Tie up the Black Dog, The Queensland Government, Clermont Community Housing and Other Services and Blokepedia for organising Garry and Dave to come to Clermont. Without these partners, Jugs & Jocks wouldn’t be possible. To all of those who attended, thank you for making it another memorable event and please remember to continue to have the conversations that matter!

PUBLIC NOTICES PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT - UPDATE #3 Isaac Regional Council advises that the temporary fencing to isolate the flying fox roost will remain partially closed until further notice. This means that a pedestrian gate on the corner of Capella and Lime streets will be partially closed. Alternative access is available since majority of the park, including the shade structure and toilets, is unaffected by this temporary closure. The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets). The flying fox roost has decreased substantially in the past week however Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost in case the number increases over the coming weeks.

Council workers had trimmed some trees in the park to try and discourage more roosting in the area last month. Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community. Council recommends that residents undertake proactive vegetation management at properties to prevent flying foxes from camping in their backyards. The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees, commonly mature mango, fig, or poinciana, little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalyptus, palm and other trees. Council thanks residents for their understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

CLERMONT TELEPHONE GUIDE 2019 Isaac Regional Council wish to advise any business or organisation that would like to advertise in the Clermont Telephone Guide 2019 that closure date is:

Friday, December 14 Please email therag@isaac.qld.gov.au or call into the Clermont Council Office to complete the necessary paperwork.

LET’S LIFT: this program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

All classes and open gym are $15. GUT AND BUTT BLAST: is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. METAPWR: is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body, involving your upper and lower body and core muscles. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn. The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat.

CIRCUIT TRAINING: this is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness. METAFIT: this is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
