CLERMONT RAG FRIDAY, 2 OCTOBER 2020

CALLING ALL CREATIVE TEEN WRITERS FOR REGIONAL THINKTANK A novel idea to create a thinktank for teenage writers has become reality in the Isaac region. Isaac’s Young Writers’ Group is an online forum to connect aspiring authors aged between 13 and 18 years of age to collaborate, be empowered and share their writing dreams. Acting Mayor Kelly Vea Vea said Isaac Regional Council has a strong belief in the creative power of our local youth. “Council is hosting weekly online meet ups to discuss, share and explore how teenagers can extend their passion for writing into the future,” Cr Vea Vea said. “Feel empowered to share your interest in writing with others across the region and learn how to turn your passion for writing into a potential career.” Starting from 27 October 2020 to 17 November 2020, there will be activities to participate in, weekly challenges, information on opportunities to extend your skills, and a special guest speaker,

ISAAC’S NATURAL BEAUTY ON DISPLAY The beauty of the Isaac region will be displayed in a new exhibition going up at the Coalface Art Gallery. The best of the entries in the recent #ourisaac photo competition will grace the gallery walls are on display now. “The beauty and variety of our region has been captured spectacularly by the marvellous photographs entered in the #ourisaac photo competition,” Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said. “Now, the best of these photos will be on display for three weeks at the Coalface Art Gallery. “From coastal pandanus to rugged caves to sweeping vistas, it is all here, and more. Who could view the selection of competition photos on display here and not want to visit our region?” Mayor Baker said that, with international travel suspended and Queenslanders re-discovering domestic holiday destinations, there is no better time to have had a promotion such as this. “While the Isaac is known as home to half the coal mines in the State, and the source of billions of dollars in royalties and other revenue for Queensland, it also attracts a considerable number of tourists. “However, there is still room for more. We are a big region – almost 60,000 square kilometres – with lots of beautiful beaches and bush to explore, and Council wants to see the number of tourist visits increase significantly.

Clermont’s Julie Turner captured this beautiful #ourisaac image

“Already, tourism is the third most valuable industry in the Isaac region, worth more than $190 million a year and directly employing approximately 1,000 people. “However, Council is working hard on a number of fronts to increase tourist visits and to make Queenslanders and interstate visitors aware of the attractions in our region. “Promotions like the photo competition – and this exhibition that has followed – will certainly help us achieve that goal.” The #ourisaac in pictures exhibition runs until Friday, 9 October at the Coalface Art Gallery and will be open during business hours.

ALOE CLERMONT GARDENERS! PUT SPRING IN YOUR STEP WITH DIG IT, ISAAC! Residents in the Isaac region who love gardening from their head tomatoes will have the chance to share in $3700 in prizes. Isaac Regional Council in partnership with generous local businesses have planted the seeds to encourage residents to get back to basics by starting a new garden or completing a project that’s been sitting on the to-do list. Mayor Anne Baker said this is the competition for those who absolutely love their time in their yard and there is a Dig It Isaac! Category for all budgets and abilities. “Let’s put spring in Isaac’s step and take advantage of our incredible weather this time of year,” Mayor Baker said. “Dig It Isaac! is all about getting back to nature, in your own backyard. Winners will share in $3700 worth of Shop Isaac gift cards with the major prize winner walking away with $1000 to spend at Isaac businesses. “So how do you enter? Spend $20 or more at a local Isaac business to help create your very own backyard oasis within the region.

CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE

SCHOLARSHIPS, HONOUR BOARDS AND TE SCORES Were you a ‘brainiac’ at school or an average scholar? Regardless of what type of student you were, you couldn’t escape school exams. School exams often determined your future, whether you would pursue a career in medicine, become a teacher or a successful business person. Today, children automatically go to high school once they’ve completed their primary school education. In the past, students had to sit an exam to determine if they qualified to progress to high school. From 1873 to 1963, generations of primary school students sat the Queensland Scholarship Examination and those who passed, gained a secondary school education at a State High School. Many schools acknowledged their students who passed the Scholarship Examination by writing their names on an Honour Board and displaying the boards in a prominent place. From 1974 to 1991, if you were a Year 12 student in Queensland who aspired to study at university or TAFE you had to sit for Tertiary Entrance Score exams and be rewarded with a three-digit score that dictated whether you would go on to study at tertiary level. The perfect TE Score was 990. The TE Score system was phased out in 1991 and replaced with the Overall Position Ranking System. The perfect OP Rank that a student could achieve was one. The OP Ranking System will be replaced by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank in 2020 and the cycle of determining a student’s future by numbers continues.

ON THIS DAY... 103 YEARS AGO October 1, 1917 - Clermont Court House Protest! Court Houses always seem to attract protests and protesters usually gather to voice their concerns about the actions of other individuals or corporations that they don’t agree with. In October 1917, the citizens of Clermont rallied to protest about their court house. Just 10 months before, Clermont had been hit by an horrific flood that sent a 16-foot wall of water surging through the town, drowning 64 people and almost destroying the town. The residents who survived vowed to rebuild their town but on higher ground. A public meeting was held on the evening of October 1, 1917 for Clermont residents to air their views on the proposed site of the new Clermont Court House. The Government was proposing to build the new court house in Daintree Street but the townsfolk wanted it built further down Capella Street, between Douglas and Mimosa Streets, closer to the police station. People wanted the court house built on their preferred site as it was away from the noise, dust and traffic of Clermont’s business centre and this wouldn’t interfere with court proceedings. They also didn’t want the court house situated in the business area of the new Clermont. The meeting resolved to ask The Minister for Public Instruction, Mr H F Hardacre to use his influence with the Queensland Government and have the court house site changed in the residents’ favour. Mr Hardacre was also the Clermont area’s representative in the Queensland Parliament.

CLERMONT WATER QUALITY RESPONSE PLAN Council has developed a plan to outline what changes and improvements are planned for the Clermont Water Treatment Plant and network. Isaac Regional Council is committed to maintaining, renewing and expanding its water infrastructure to meet the present and future needs of the communities of the region. In partnership with government and industry, Council continues to invest significantly in this essential function as part of a focus on improving water infrastructure and service delivery. Council acknowledges the region’s communities have experienced past issues in relation to water supply, but is working hard to deliver long-term solutions, particularly in the area of drinking water quality. In 2019-20, Council is spending over $1M on maintaining and improving the region’s water infrastructure. In 20/21, over $2.5M has been approved and additional funds are also proposed to be spent specifically on projects relating to the sustainability of the Clermont water supply network. Council is committed to providing regular updates on the progress of the actions outlined in the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan. Regular updates on the progress will be made on Council’s website. Each item outlined in the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan will be updated on the website so the Clermont community can regularly keep track of the progress.

To obtain a copy of the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan, visit Council’s website to download or pick one up from the Clermont Library, Cnr Karmoo and Herschel Streets.
