MAGICAL CHRISTMAS FUN IS COMING TO TOWN Isaac Libraries are set to come alive with the sound of stories, laughter and fun as the delightful tradition of hosting end of year celebrations continues across Isaac this December. The special First 5 Forever Story Time sessions will feature fun and festive activities including singing, dancing, reading and craft across six local towns. Held at a traditionally joyous and family-oriented time of year, Mayor Anne Baker is encouraging parents, grandparents or carers to bring their little ones along to enjoy one of the interactive sessions on offer. “These special festive Story Time sessions are a much-anticipated annual event at our libraries, and I would encourage all families to come and join in the fun,” Mayor Baker said. “Isaac Libraries are a great space to enjoy at any time of the year providing a unique opportunity to connect with others in the community and engage

FROM THE PAST Contributed by Clermont Historical Centre Volunteers

WHAT IS A MEMORY TICKLER? DO YOU NEED ONE? This very simple device is on display at the Clermont Historical Centre. It was used years ago to maintain stock level. A little metal tab was ‘flipped’ to remind the homemaker that items such as starch, tapioca, lard or perhaps soda needed to be purchased in the next shopping trip. Reference: Clermont Historical Centre Presents 100 Objects, 2019, page 47.

WHAT IS AN HONOUR BOARD? ARE YOU RELATED TO ONE OF THESE PEOPLE? A school honour board lists high achieving students and /or students who have received scholarships. Honour boards such as the one pictured are on display in the Masonic Lodge building at the Clermont Historical Centre. There are some notable identities on these boards. Are you related to one of these people? For examples, Arthur Wehlow a victim of the 1916 floods. Margaret Southgate, the daughter of the town’s renowned builder William Southgate, who served as a nurse at the Peak Downs Hospital for over 50 years. Gordon Pullar Snr, a Clermont business owner and a renowned photographer who took many of the extraordinary 1916 flood photographs. His son Gordon Pullar Jnr was mentioned. References: O’Donnell, D. (1989). A History of Clermont & District. Australia: Belyando Shire Council.

ON THIS DAY...120 YEAR AGO - 29 NOVEMBER 1899 The air in the town of Clermont was reported to be thick with grasshoppers on 29 November 1899. These grasshoppers came from the east caused significant damage to the town. Reference: Queensland Times Ipswich Herald & General Advertiser, (1899), 30 November Thursday.

ON THIS DAY...60 YEARS AGO - NOVEMBER 1959 The Clermont Secondary Department was officially opened in November 1959. The Director – General of Education at the time, Mr Herbert Watkin officiated the Secondary Department by ribbons cutting in the school’s colours of maroon and gold. The Secondary Department enabled local children to continue their education from Year 7 to Year 10. In 1984, the first Year 11 class commenced. Not until 1989, when the Clermont Secondary Department ceased, that Clermont State High School was officially born.
