CLERMONT COMMUNITY AND COVID-19 - CORONAVIRUS Contributed by the Clermont 4 Doctors Committee With the very real threat that the Covid-19 Pandemic will impact our community, ‘Clermont for Doctors’ (C4D) committee decided it was important to gather our medical professionals and front line services to meet and discuss the unique needs of the Clermont district and how best to respond to this crisis. On Tuesday 17 March, representatives from Clermont Doctors Surgery, Clermont Country Practice, Qld Ambulance Service, Qld Fire and Emergency Service, Qld Police Service, Isaac Regional Council and Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG), Clermont Pharmacy, Clermont Community Health Action Group, C4D and Clermont Community Business Group met to discuss the unique challenges we may face as a rural community, and together, plan solutions to keep our community safe. Although unable to be present at the meeting, Qld Health, through the Clermont Hospital and Clermont Multi-Purpose Health Service, contributed an up-to-date report on the protocols currently adopted at the hospital with special concerns for MontCler residents, who are some of the most vulnerable in our community.

Clermont Hospital: •

•

Qld Health at the Clermont MPHS has implemented strict updated procedures regarding hygiene/ cleaning/food preparation/social distancing to help prevent and slow the spread. Within the facility, information sessions are held twice daily including Qld Ambulance Service and Isaac Region Local Disaster Management group ( LDMG).

•

There is only one entrance into the hospital via Emergency.

•

Anyone entering the hospital must be screened to determine if they have been exposed to, or have symptoms of the virus. Not everyone experiencing symptoms is eligible for testing for Covid 19.

For more information: •

Ring 1300 Health or 1300 432584

For UP-TO-DATE RELIABLE information on the Corona-virus Contact Clermont MPHS on 4983 4000 to speak with the Nurse Unit Manager – Garth Brewster-Webb Visit Qld Health website: www.health.qld.gov.au/corona-virus Coronavirus hotline 1800 020 080 •

If experiencing symptoms contact your local GP surgery or ring 000.

Home and Community Care services (HACC): Are continuing their current services but with modifications re: personal safety equipment, social distancing to ensure staff and clients are safe. Daily welfare checks via phone for those with symptoms. Same protocols as at the hospital. Before entering the home, clients must be asked the same questionnaire as at the hospital to establish if they have symptoms or have been in contact with anyone who has, to keep HACC staff safe and also minimise risk of spreading virus to other clients.

Qld Ambulance Service, Qld Fire & Emergency Services, Queensland Police Service: Are all fully staffed at present and currently unaffected by virus. Some modifications to procedures have been necessary as per Qld Health directives to ensure safety of workforce and clients/patients. All non-essential services and training have been cancelled until further notice. Receiving daily updates from Queensland Health. Isaac Regional Council, (also Isaac Local Disaster Management Group): Currently working with individual districts to tailor response and management to each community. Take their lead from Qld Health and have daily meetings with Qld Health to keep up-to-date. Will assist with education, information and updates re: Clermont Rag, Noticeboards and Social Media. Are ready to act if the situation changes. Currently on a watching brief.

Clermont Doctors Surgery: There is an isolation procedure at the practice with a designated isolation room/fever clinic. When phoning for an appointment you will be asked a series of questions to see if you need to be isolated from the rest of the patients in the surgery. Tele-health appointments are available; only one locum doctor on duty until early April. Dr Dylan Ferley will be back in the practice from early April fulltime for three months. He will also be credentialed with Qld Health to work in the hospital as well as at the surgery. No supply issues at this stage in preparation for the usual ‘flu season’. A list of people wanting the regular flu vaccine is being compiled.

Clermont Country Practice:

close the season, to slow the spread and minimise risk to our community and a drain on our resources.

Tele-health appointments are available. Both Dr Sarah and Dr Krishna, at the request of Qld Health have agreed to credential so they can assist at the Clermont Hospital in the event of a doctor shortage. Working with patients to develop a plan in the event they need to self-isolate.

Both Doctors’ surgeries are now operating with their own pandemic plans, following Qld Health guidelines.

•

Concern was expressed about the capacity of the hospital and medical services to manage an outbreak in our community. Isaac Regional Council and Local Disaster Management group will continue to liaise with Qld Health daily.

•

Importance for families to have an action plan as to how they will cope with patients who are selfisolating at home? Difficulty getting medical supplies, groceries etc. It was considered there will be a need or opportunity to establish a ‘home delivery service’. An information brochure regarding essential services being offered by existing local businesses in the community is being compiled. This will be mail dropped as soon as possible.

•

Flu vaccinations are not yet available this season. Advice is flu shots will be available for the most vulnerable in early April.

HELP SLOW THE SPREAD, PHONE AHEAD. Clermont Pharmacy: Grant reported business as usual – with modifications to practice to ensure safety of staff and customers. Stock is in supply at wholesalers. Some stock shortages can be overcome working with the hospital supply.

Priority will be given to people meeting criteria: any one suffering a chronic health condition, chest infections and >70 years. Contact surgeries as waiting lists are currently operating.

As a ‘one pharmacy town’ Clermont Pharmacy is guaranteed supply. Anyone with flu-like symptoms please phone ahead. Doctors will email scripts for anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms so medication and purchases can be delivered to them while they are in their car, or picked up by a third party.

CONCERNS RAISED THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED •

•

Concern was raised over the impact that the usual influx of ‘grey nomads’ may have on our already stretched health and medical services. Clermont Community Business Group representatives are currently working with the appropriate authorities to look at delaying the start or

•

Isaac Regional Council has already responded to the Federal Government’s guidelines for social distancing and some upcoming events in the region have been either postponed or cancelled.

CLERMONT MEALS ON WHEELS Contributed by the Clermont Meals on Wheels Committee Clermont Meals on Wheels was incorporated on 27 June, 1988 and is a not-for-profit organisation. It is a vital part of our community and has been delivering meals since that time. Over the years many changes have been made. At present we have fifty delivery volunteers and we are very grateful to have them. Meals are prepared at our local hospital by the kitchens staff five days a week. Frozen meals are available on weekends if you require meals seven days a week. These meals are delivered by our band of local volunteers to approximately 18 clients. These numbers vary from week to week depending on daily needs of our clients. For some of our clients this in the only daily contact that they have with others. No doctors referral is required if you wish to receive meals. A telephone call to one of our committee members by your self or the community nurse is all that is required. There is no specific age group that can receive these meals. If you have been unwell, recently released from hospital or have had an accident and can’t cook for yourself then we are only to pleased to assist.

Each daily meal consists of soup, hot main meal and dessert. Juice is also available on Mondays with your daily delivery. All meals are required to be placed in approved packaging and then placed in individual eskies for delivery, for which our Association pays for. Cost of these meals is $9.00 per meal and monthly accounts are issued to each client. Our Association is charged by Mackay District Health Service for each meal that leaves the hospital. We do not receive any government funding for these services. As we know, nothing is free these days and at present the Meals on Wheels car travels approximately 125 kilometres per week. Our Association owns this vehicle and we have the cost of the upkeep of fuel, tyres, registration, insurance and regular servicing of the vehicle. If you come across a fundraiser around town being held on behalf of Meals on Wheels please take the time to support us and your local community. If you require our assistance during the corona virus phase we are entering, then please do not hesitate to contact any on the following: Chris Robertson on 0429 490 102, Marg Daniels on 0437 835 272 or Barb Lambert on 0467 280 493.

POSTPONEMENT OF THE 2020 CLERMONT SHOW Contributed by the Clermont Show Committee The Clermont Show Committee have had to make the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Clermont Show that was to be held on the 25, 26 and 27 May, due to the current recommendations from the Australian Government. At this point in time, the Show Committee will still be going ahead with the Cattlemen’s Challenge, Giant Pumpkin and Big Tomato competitions.

an unfair pressure to our already stretched hospital, doctors and nurses. We are also aware of what impact a potential COVID-19 case could mean to our aged care facility and elderly community and we don’t want to risk potentially jeopardising our community. To our committee, the health of our community is of paramount importance.

These competitions commenced prior to this decision being made however judging will take place privately and therefore, won’t breach the current public health restrictions imposed by the Government and should not compromise community safety.

We have also considered our committee, volunteers, competitors and exhibitors. These people work tirelessly for months in the lead up to the Show and are the back bone to our event. Without them, our Show is impossible to stage.

The Beef Cattle section is yet to be decided as there are a number of considerations still to be determined. Once this decision has been made, we will make the announcement.

A huge shout out to our amazing Sponsors. Those who have backed us through the hard times and have supported us in so many ways. Now it is our turn to back them and support them through, what will be, a challenging time. We hope that you will support us by supporting them.

The decision to postpone the Show has not been made lightly as we understand the importance of our event to the local community and businesses. However, the Committee feel that it is in our community’s best interest to not move ahead with the planning. The Show sees a large number of additional people travel into the community and we feel that this will add

We hope all our patrons stay safe and healthy through these challenging times and we look forward to seeing everyone for our next Clermont Show. If you have any concerns, please email us at admin@clermontshow.com.au.

PUBLIC NOTICE CLERMONT POOL SERVICE INTERRUPTION Council is closely monitoring the current COVID-19 pandemic and implementing responses in accordance with Federal and State Government guidelines. It is the intent of Council to take reasonable precaution in a reasonable manner to ensure that the potential and actual risks relating to the transmission of the COVID-19 virus are managed effectively, efficiently and transparently. It has been determined that general operations of the Clermont Swimming Pool present sufficient risk to

CVS Client Corona Virus Policy 24/3/2020 Version 2 At the Clermont Veterinary Surgery, we are taking the COVID-19 threat very seriously and are doing all we can to minimise the risk of infection to our staff, our clients and the community. The Clermont Veterinary Surgery provides an essential service to the community and rural sector and will continue to provide normal full veterinary services as long as possible. The measures we are implementing effective immediately include: Dr Brendan is working remotely from the clinic basing himself at home so he can minimise his social contact and risk of infection, and still service our valuable property clients. Amanda our practice manager will be working from home. Our equine vets will not be seeing clients face-to-face. Instead horses can be dropped off for them to examine at the clinic and the equine vets will consult by telephone with the owner before and then after with a treatment plan. Amanda, Brendan, Max and Caroline can still be contacted through the clinic on (07)49831172. Our phones have been playing up a little, so if you can’t get through please ring the after hours phone on 0438 718 802. Our monthly runs to Middlemount and Alpha will be suspended until further notice. Our surgery will remain open however, in addition to the extra containment plans put in place we will be implementing the following directives: 1. Only 1 person will be admitted to consultation rooms during your visit. Please do not bring children or other family members to your appointment. This is to ensure appropriate social distancing and reduce inadvertent contamination by close contact. 2. No visits for hospitalised patients – we can keep you up to date with photos and videos. 3. Please wait in your car with your animal until we are ready for your appointment. Appointments are necessary to help us run efficiently - you are welcome to drop off your animal for treatment if we can’t find a good time for you. Your animals will be treated and we will fit everyone in. 4. Please ring and order all medication and food before your visit. We can bring it out to the car for you or drop it to your house. We accept credit card payment over the phone. 5. Where applicable consultations may be carried out in the car such as Routine weekly injections. Please do not come into the clinic if you are unwell, or if you require a property visit, give us plenty of warning you are unwell so we can take appropriate action. Housekeeping: Regular cleansing with virucidal disinfectant of all common contact areas (door handles, toilets) is carried out at least three times daily. We ask you to please observe personal hygiene for coughs, sneezes etc. There is hand sanitizer at the front counter for your use. Thank you to our wonderful clients for your patience and understanding at this challenging time.

As we get updates, we will continue to keep the community and our supporters informed. The patience and resilience of our town and our team are unquestionable so there is no doubt that the start of the season will be eagerly anticipated by players and supporters alike. This delay in proceedings allows the committee to dream up some really big exciting events for our club and our supporters. Stay tuned.

Jacko McDonald was the mens winner with Rohan Barnes runnner up.

The delay also allows us to organise polo shirts for supporters and have them here before the season starts. If you would like to purchase a polo, please send through your size to clermontbears@gmail.com
