NEW CITIZENS WELCOMED TO ISAAC Isaac Regional Council welcomed five new citizens last Thursday at a special ceremony held in Clermont. Rogelio Biona and Mary Eseo from the Philippines, Amy Duggan from England, Himani Kansara from India and Rosemary Kulu from Papua New Guinea took their Australian citizenship pledges in front of friends and family.
“Our ceremony recognises that citizenship is a common bond made meaningful because it embraces an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of all people in a public recognition of your commitment to Australia and your family.” Mayor Baker said that choosing to embrace Australian values publicly was a substantial decision made by the new citizens.
Mayor Anne Baker, Cr Greg Austen and Cr Lyn Jones with Isaac Regional Council CEO Gary Stevenson presented the new citizens with their certificates and an Australian Citizenship coin.
“Our new citizens are ABCs; Australians By Choice. This is not something most Australians get to choose and makes your decision much more special,” Mayor Baker said.
During the ceremony Mayor Baker outlined the duties and responsibilities of the new citizens as they took a pledge to uphold Australian values.
“The importance of holding this ceremony is to celebrate our multiculturalism, which makes us more aware and resilient as a community.
“I am proud to be authorised as a person who may conduct this citizenship ceremony on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. This is a very significant honour in the role of a Mayor,” Mayor Baker said.
“In the words of our Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, The Hon David Coleman, ‘it’s now your responsibility to join us in building an even stronger nation’.”

COUNCIL AT COAL FACE OF RESOURCES DEBATE Isaac Regional Council’s position on mining and its support for the resources sector remains firmly in step with the community, Mayor Anne Baker has affirmed.
“We absolutely support responsible, planned development in the resource industry. This means ensuring environmental, social and economic are considered, conditioned and monitored by government.”
“We are a proud resources region, our communities are home to proud mining families and we are absolutely proud of the role our region is playing in helping to energise the world,” she said.
“We also have a strong record of fighting for such development to contribute positively to the social and economic sustainabilities of the communities that surround them.
Mayor Baker said Council continued to advocate passionately for the opening of the Galilee Basin. “As part of our Federal Election advocacy platform we are calling for a commitment from all parties and candidates to open the Galilee Basin for development,” she said. Mayor Baker said Council recently provided testimony before a parliamentary inquiry into the Mineral Resources (Galilee Basin) Amendment Bill 2018, which sought to bring down the shutters on future mining in the Galilee. “We argued against this Bill and last week the inquiry committee recommended it not be passed by the Queensland Parliament. Make no mistake, this was a significant win for the region.

“To be clear, we don’t talk about the Galilee Basin in the context of any one particular project or company. What we are focused on is ensuring the vast wealth of mineral resources within the Galilee are sustainably managed for the benefit of future generations Mayor Baker said mining in the Isaac generated almost half of the State’s royalties revenue. “Those royalties fund schools, hospitals, roads and public transport in our cities. Services and infrastructure people take for granted,” she said. “The question is not how important is mining to Isaac but how important is mining to Queensland. We continue to communicate this message to the Federal and State Government in the strongest of terms.”

PUBLIC NOTICES UPDATE - RESTORATION OF COOMBURRAGEE HUT Isaac Regional Council advises residents and visitors that the Coomburragee Hut currently located at the entrance of Clermont Historical Centre, Gregory Highway will undergo a restoration project.
During these two days the centre’s access road will be closed.
The project will include dismantling and rebuilding the hut at a different location at the centre.
As Council will be rebuilding the hut as historically accurate as possible a date of completion has not been set.
The project has been delayed due to availability of equipment and will now begin on:

GET IN NOW BEFORE DISCOUNT ENDS Isaac Regional Council would like to remind residents there is two weeks left to take advantage of the rates discount period. Ratepayers who make prompt payment on or before May 1, will receive a 10 per cent discount on general rates. Council rates and charges that remain unpaid after May 1 will incur 11 per cent interest per annum, compounded daily. Some financial institutions take up to three days to process electronic payments. Please check with financial institution to ensure your
payment is received by Council in time to secure discount. Ratepayers who have encountered delays with the postal service in their area can register their email address with Council for an additional rates notice to be issued electronically. If you have not received your rates notice please contact Council. Ratepayers can register their details and speak to Council’s Rates Team by phoning 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227) or emailing records@isaac.qld.gov.au between 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
CLERMONT WASTE WATER MAINS MANHOLE EXCAVATION COMMENCING APRIL 29 TO JUNE 30 Clermont residents are advised Council will be locating and excavating the concrete waste water manhole lids situated in some residents’ yards. This is in preparation of re-commencement of the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection throughout the township, as part of IRC commitment to improve waste water service quality and delivery. WHAT ARE WE DOING? Council has engaged contractor Relining Solutions to undertake the location and exposure of the waste water manholes. The Relining Solutions teams will require entry to some residents yards to conduct these works. Only some properties will be affected. For these properties a formal notice will be issued by an IRC liaison officer 2 days prior to requiring access to an individual property. If excavation is required, all excavations will be barricaded and made safe until it can be back filled. All efforts will be made to ensure backfilling is completed on same day.
WHEN IS IT HAPPENING? To minimise disruption to households these works will be undertaken:

BABY BOUNCE, STORY TIME AND CRAFT BORROWBOX APP UPDATE BorrowBox is an online service for Isaac Libraries members to borrow eBooks and eAudiobooks. The BorrowBox App now synchronises your reading/ listening progress for each eBook and eAudiobook via the cloud. This is done automatically. The BorrowBox App is now available with Amazon Appstore and can also be installed on Kindle Fire devices. If you haven’t already signed up for BorrowBox, inquire with the friendly staff at the Clermont Library.
SPOTLIGHT ON MARY BALOGH Mary Balogh is a Welsh-Canadian writer of historical romance novels. Mary wanted to be an author while growing up in Wales. She obtained a teaching degree and moved to Canada on a two-year contract. Mary met her husband Robert soon after moving to Canada and they married a year later. Mary wrote her first novel A Masked Deception in longhand at the kitchen table during the evening. A Masked Deception was published in 1985 and won Mary the Romantic Times Award for Best New Regency Writer. Mary retired from teaching in 1988 to pursue writing novels full-time.
ANIMALIA DIGITAL E-RESOURCE Animalia Digital is one of many e-resources that can be accessed through the libraries’ link on the council website. Based on Graeme Base’s well-loved picture books adventures, Animalia Digital is an interactive digital program focusing on literacy and language for children aged five to 12 years. Your account for Animalia Digital can be set up on the device of your choice.
The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a great way to connect with other parents with young children. BABY BOUNCE (0-2 years) Come along on Thursdays from 9.30am to 10am. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. STORY TIME AND CRAFT (0-5 years) This is held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 10.30am. Bright, vibrant picture book tales come alive when read by library staff along with a simple craft activity which helps enhance fine motor skill development.
