MESSAGES ABOUT ANTIQUE BOTTLES TO UNFOLD An antique bottle collector will share his passion on the history of Central Queensland bottles at the Clermont Historical Centre next month.
“After more than 50 years of collecting, Dad and I amassed an extremely large collection of gems, minerals, old bottles, Australian pottery and a myriad of other collectables.”
Steve Petterson has been a competitive bottle collector and avid collectables show organiser for many years, following a fascination that began when he was only six years old.
Division 6 Councillor Lyn Jones said Mr Petterson’s visit will encourage people to look through their old boxes and maybe spark an interest in antique collecting.
Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the event comes off the back of the successful 100-Objects exhibition in the historic Masonic Lodge.
“Our Clermont Historical Centre is proud to host visiting guest speaker Steve Petterson,” Cr Jones said.
“The Clermont Historical Centre and events such as this allow us to capture a moment in time and preserve it for generations to come,” Mayor Baker said. “By having someone as passionate as Steve Petterson guest talk, we get a chance to experience the interesting history and story behind a seemingly ordinary object we might take for granted every day.” Mr Petterson, a former Vice President of the Queensland Historical Bottle and Collectables Club Inc., said much of his spare time was spent digging or hunting for old bottles. “I would drive to far-flung regional towns both in Queensland and interstate chasing them,” Mr Petterson said.

RAISED FUNDS TO CREATE A BETTER MIND SPACE FOR ISAAC A total of $25,000 has been raised by a charity led by the Isaac Regional Council Mayor to support on-the-ground mental health initiatives for residents in the region. Mayor Anne Baker, who is the Isaac Regional Charity Fund chairperson, said the focus of the 2019 Mayor’s Charity Ball was to create accessibility for those who suffer from the challenges of mental illness. “Since 2014, the wonderful generosity of our Isaac community and event sponsors has helped the Isaac Regional Charity Fund raise more than $330,000 for worthwhile causes, particularly mental health initiatives,” Mayor Baker said. “This has been a fantastic result and is one that makes our board very proud. We once again had a generous 330-strong sell out crowd in August this year, who helped make this happen. “We are proud to be part of enabling a real grassroots difference and contributing to those in need in our community. This support demonstrates the difference pure people power can make in the lives of others. “Many people at the top of their field - from sporting champions to business leaders and celebrities are increasingly prepared to speak openly of their challenges with mental illness.
“And it is not from a position of failure and fear, but from one of strength, understanding and empathy. I think that sends a positive message to us all. “As a region, we continue to face our share of tragedy and adversity. But it is evident from the community to the coalface that there is a willingness to engage in a genuine conversation about our state of mind. “It is no longer simply a case of harden up, move on or deal with it. It is unhealthy and unsafe to have people shielding their pain, grief, anxiety and fear behind a strained smile or a ‘stiff upper lip’. We need to talk and engage in genuine self-reflection. Mayor Baker said a heartfelt thank you deserved to go to all the supporters and sponsors of the event. “We all have a level of responsibility to be aware of our own mental health and that of family members, work mates and community members,” she said. “Let us all continue to empower the conservation about mental health.” The Isaac Regional Charity Fund is a deductible gift recipient, which means it can receive tax-deductible gifts.
PUBLIC NOTICES CLERMONT SPORTSGROUND EASTERN TOILET BLOCK CLOSURE Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents and sportsground users the eastern toilet block between the netball courts and main football field is closed until further notice. Council officers are evaluating the structural condition assessment advice recently received and will ensure the community is updated on any future actions associated with the facility. CLERMONT SPORTSGROUND GRANDSTAND CLOSED Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents the sportsground grandstand on Rubyvale Road is closed until further notice. The grandstand will be undergoing a refurbishment,
which will see the existing facility reconstructed to a compliant standard. Council apologises for any inconvenience and thanks the community for their patience.

Please check with your financial institution to ensure your payment is received by Council in time to secure discount.
Ratepayers who make prompt payment on or before 30 October will receive a 10 per cent discount on general rates.
Ratepayers who have encountered delays with the postal service in their area can register their email address with Council for an additional rates notice to be issued electronically.
Council rates and charges that remain unpaid after 30 October will incur 9.83 per cent interest per annum, compounded daily.
If you have not received your rates notice please contact Council.
Some financial institutions take up to three days to process electronic payments.
UPDATE #1, FLYING FOX COLONY, CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council advises that the western public access gate to Centenary Park has been partially closed as from:
Thursday, 26 September Until further notice Part of the park will be surrounded by temporary fencing that is being constructed to isolate a roost of up to 5,000 little red flying foxes that have recently arrived. The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets). This site is considered a protected roost, under State legislation, as flying foxes have used this site for breeding and rearing young, which has impacted on the potential
vegetation management. Considerations have also been made that trimming the trees in the park would encourage flying foxes to venture into residential backyards. For the first time, community feedback which helped inform a Statement of Management Intent (SOMI) for managing flying foxes is now in action. The SOMI outlines the principle of ownership of land and where the responsibilities are on state, privately owned and Council land while acknowledging that all management actions undertaken at flying fox roosts would comply with prescribed methods. This is outlined in the Code of Practice – Ecologically Sustainable Management of Flying-fox Roosts
and within the legislative frame work of the Nature Conservation Act 1992.
It increases their susceptibility to disease and reduces their ability to migrate on from townships.
Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions on flying fox roosts can impact on you, your neighbours and your community.
Council recommends that residents undertake proactive vegetation management at properties to deter flying foxes from camping in their backyards, before it happens.
This includes self-dispersing, destroying or modifying a tree once a roost is established. Disturbing flying foxes that are resting during the day stresses the flying foxes and can fragment the roost, causing more issues in the community.
The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees, commonly mature mango, fig, or poinciana. Little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalypts, palm and other trees. Visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/flying-foxes for comprehensive information on flying foxes.

Without mains electricity or water on the island, and with little else to do, Cleeves took up writing. In 2006, Cleeves was the inaugural winner of the prestigious Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award for the Crime Writer’s Association for Rave Black, the first volume in her Shetland series. In 2017 she was presented with the Diamond Dagger of the Crime Writers’ Association, the highest honour in British crime writing.
