CLERMONT RAG FRIDAY, 24 MAY 2019
CROWDS TO SHOW UP FOR ICONIC EVENT It’s showtime for the Isaac region with the countdown on to next week’s 2019 Clermont Show - the Isaac Region’s Show. The Isaac Region’s Show will be stocked full of fun as thousands of local and visiting showgoers herd in for the three-day event. Mayor Anne Baker said Council was, once again, pleased to be a major sponsor of the iconic annual event which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2018. “The long history of the Clermont Show traces back to the very origins of agricultural exhibitions in Queensland and it even pre-dates Brisbane’s famed Ekka,” she said. “The proud tradition of the ‘local show’ remains a focal point for country life in regional Australia. “It brings together travelling showmen and their attractions, local business and industry, graziers and growers, hobbyists of all pursuits, cooks and creative artists.

It is a melting pot of fun, excitement and adventure for people of all ages.” Mayor Baker said the Clermont Show continued to be a fantastic showcase of the enviable lifestyle and pure people power which drives the Isaac region. “From cattle sales to wood chopping, a petting zoo to pavilion displays, the Clermont Show Society Committee always delivers a fabulous event, so don’t miss out on great entertainment,” she said. The Clermont Show – Isaac Region’s Show will be held Monday 27 May to Wednesday 29 May 2019. Admission prices are: Adults $10, Pensioners/High School Students $5, Children under 12 free and Tuesday’s ticket can be re-used for free entry on Wednesday. For more information on the Clermont Show visit their website www.clermontshow.com.au or find them on Facebook.
CLERMONT SHOW LIFE MEMBERS - TAKE 3 contributed by Margaret Henn The histories of Life Members of the Clermont Show so far illustrate how many and varied are the sections of the Show in which to be involved. The trend continues. Rob Whelan was Vice-President for several years, then President from 1985 – 1988. He and wife Margaret were Ring Stewards for many years. However, it is for his role in the move from the old grounds to the new that he is most remembered. Rob, along with fellow Belyando Shire Councillor Bill Faint, was a key figure in the changeover from the old Rodeo grounds on the flat to the present Rodeo and Show Grounds on Wattle Hill. A flood swept through the old grounds in 1977, buckling the fencing around the arena and also causing serious damage to the cattle yards. Two possible new sites were suggested. Emotions ran high in the community. Ties to the old ground were very strong and heated debates took place, both verbally and in the local press, on the wisdom of this proposition. Eventually, the decision to move to Wattle Hill was endorsed. The first show was held on the new site in 1982, a bare gravelly ridge. Grumbles were still coming from those who were reluctant to leave the shady trees and familiarity of the old grounds. Each year from then on saw improvements; trees planted, areas grassed, pavilions and facilities established. Blair Athol Coal contributed generously to this development and Clermont’s grounds are now recognised as one of the best. Another who became involved at the old grounds was Brian Sporne. He initially worked on the Show Committee as Marshalling Steward and as on offsider to Les Flohr. After a year of the dramas associated with being a Marshalling Steward, Brian thought it was time to move on to experience a different aspect of the Show. He soon realised that it would be helpful for the committee to have someone with practical ‘repair and maintain’ skills, someone who could fix a light, repair a broken board on a grandstand, drive a semi, or a crane. Before long, Brian to some extent became ‘Mr Fix–it’ on the Committee. Brian went on to become Chairman of the Show Committee and later President of the Rodeo and Show Society. He was awarded life membership in 2003. One who also gravitated to different sections of the Show was Alan ‘Doey’ Hicks. Doey began competing in the wood chopping events at the Clermont Show with his brother Ray. Doey encouraged the Finger lads from Hillview to also become involved, so began a wonderful wood chopping tradition for the families.
Memories tell of larrikinism and pranks during the wood chopping competitions. The woodchoppers were always up for the challenge of Tug a War and arm wrestling strength tests. The choppers would also join the contests in Sideshow Alley to find the strongest man. During the time the Clermont Show was held down at the flat, boxers from the travelling boxing tent often challenged the locals to take on their fighters. Doey, representing the woodchoppers, occasionally took the challenge. Over time he fought the renowned Maori fighter and others who were willing. A secret that Doey held was that he had done some boxing during national service with the army, so he often came out a winner! In time Doey began exhibiting his beef cattle and he was immensely proud of his achievements there. Wynyard won many champion awards, the most successful exhibitor for the beef cattle and often the heaviest cow and bullock of the show. He served as Beef Cattle Steward for several years and then became Stud Steward following the move to the new grounds. Recognition of Doey’s contribution to the Rodeo and Show Society came in 1995, when he was honoured with Life Membership. Another worthy recipient is Jean Bridgeman who followed Doey as Stud Cattle Steward. During the period of Jean’s stewardship, the Stud Section at Clermont Show continued to improve and expand. Jean organised and planned the new Stud shed and loading ramp adjacent to the Stud section and she was instrumental in having the stud ring moved to its present location. Jean instigated many new ideas and made positive changes to keep the stud cattle area active. The Junior Judging, Individual and Teams of Three, Junior Paraders, Herdsman and Led Steer Competitions were all introduced by Jean after she had observed these working successfully at larger shows. There are so many past and present Life Members who deserve mention here for their contribution to the Show over many years but space precludes. As another Show approaches, the words of Life Member Sue Struss are appropriate. “Take a pat on the back, past and present committee members and enjoy.”

CR JONE’S COLUMN Meetings, meetings and yet more meetings. Someone asked me if we actually get anything done at these meetings or do I just attend meetings for the sake of attending. Had to say that if I couldn’t achieve something at these meetings, I would sooner be sitting on a beach in the warm somewhere so yes, they really are necessary. Decisions are made that affect nearly everyone in Clermont at some time. It is very important that I do attend not only meetings but just about every event that is on in town. Not only as a representative of Council but as a member of our community. BA Rodeo has been and gone and wouldn’t you know it, the event that the council sponsored was actually washed out with rain. I say who cares – as Mr Bettridge from Montcler always says to me – “Lyn – you never wish the rain away.” How true, when we get it we embrace it. Penny once again catered and all I can say is food, food and yet more food. Thanks for that Penny. Jules from Montcler took some of the ressies to the park on May 10 and dare I say it – the CWA ladies provided the morning tea in combination with an event that they were doing. The choc chip biscuits and the outback slice were absolutely not to be missed. Thank you to all the ladies and particularly to the two ladies who were such good sports with regards to their cooking. You know who you are, so thank you. In between these events I have been to Moranbah several times. Yep you guessed it. Meetings. The week-end saw me participating in the Judging of the Clermont Show Girls and gents. Thank goodness Andrea and Jake were there as well so the decisions are made just that little easier. Congratulations to the winners and to all the entrants.

It’s not easy to sit in front of judges and answer questions but you all did amazing. I just wish everyone could be a winner and in some ways you all are, as you all stepped up and gave it a shot. The Museum hosted an afternoon tea where the entrants had to face another round of questions. Once again they all did so well. Michael Rodda our local officer in charge of police stepped in and did the afternoon session of judging as Jake had another commitments. Got to say he also did a great job. Once again Penny catered and did an absolute fantastic job. Thanks yet again to not only Penny but her whole staff. What a fabulous place to hold an event. The gardens and yard looked immaculate and the backdrop of the old buildings made a picture perfect opportunity. Axel is starting to be a latch door kid. We don’t seem to be home much at the moment but this will change when we bring down the budget and most of the events start to slow down. As I have told him – suck it up sunshine you will soon be sick of me hanging around. He has the TV on and wanders around the house by himself normally pulling the stuffing out of all his toys. I never know what exactly I am going to walk into. Wish he could cook and do the washing, but don’t think that is going to happen somehow. That’s about all for now so until next time.....Lyn.

BANQUETS, BEEF OR BOOKS - ON SHOW AT THE SHOW! contributed by Jessie Appleton - GW3 The Ideas to Enterprise Forum at this year’s Clermont Show is shaping up to be an interesting addition to the program for Show Wednesday following the Grand Parade. With about a dozen local start-up or expanding businesses joining together to showcase the exciting emerging business talent in our community. This Small Business Week function, Ideas to Enterprise Forum, is one not to be missed, and will be both informative and entertaining. Following an address from keynote speaker, Lachie Smart, the youngest person to fly solo around the world, these new and emerging businesses will present to those attending. The business owners will have an opportunity to explain and promote their new business ventures, and there will be time to discuss how our community will benefit from their services. John Burnett, from BENI, highlighted that the businesses on show in the speed profiles will be from a range of industries. All these businesses have demonstrated ways where they have turned an idea into an enterprise. These businesses include: Erin Kennedy, The Cake and Platter Co, who will provide a range of her delectable treats to feed the crowd, will be just one of the recent start-ups on show. Alec McConnell from Clermont Country Care will outline the services his business can provide, while Nic Fordyce, Nic Dyer, Elisha Parker, and Leonie Keune have developed unique online marketing opportunities. Ash Fairbrother has also moved to using electronic media to supply ‘the right stock horse to the right client’,
and Donna Fitzgerald has developed office management and bookwork support systems. John Burnett stated “there are also major developments happening in our rural industries, with Martin Laffer updating all on the progress of a cutting edge beef processing technology, and Blair and Josie Angus - Angus Pastoral Co, reporting on the progress with their Signature Beef branded product and the development of a boutique beef processing plant on their Clermont property, Sondella”. “This is just a cross section of the opportunities on display,” John explained. “We will then move to a rather unusual discussion, led by Garnett Hollier on ‘entrepreneurial idea development’. This session will include a panel of those who have ‘been there, done that’!” The panel will include Phil Reid, Nic Dyer, Josie Angus, Lachie Smart, and Deborah Mead. This discussion will provide understanding, support and inspiration for those who would like to take an Idea to an Enterprise! GW3 also have an announcement to make about a unique grant opportunity for small business start-ups, to be presented by Adani. “If you have a question or would like help to get a business venture up and running, or would even just like to hear what others are doing to create opportunity in our community, then the Ideas to Enterprise Forum on Wednesday at the Clermont Show is the place to be. See you there!” John concluded. Tickets are on sale now for this event and admission includes a light supper.
