ISAAC REGION’S 2020 AUSTRALIA DAY AMBASSADOR - SCOTT STIDSTON OAM

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said it was an honour to have Mr Stidston as the Isaac region’s Australia Day Ambassador.

“Scott is a great advocate for improving the quality of life for people with a disability,” Mayor Baker said.

“Scott has increased awareness of spinal injury, promotes inclusive communities and has seen significant improvements in infrastructure and services through his continued advocacy.

“His own motorcycle injury that left him a quadriplegic has never stopped him contributing to the community and campaigning for those with a disability.

Mr Stidston said he was looking forward to visiting Nebo, Moranbah and Clermont on Australia Day. “Australia Day is such a special community day and a chance to showcase what’s great about Australia and the Isaac region,” Mr Stidston said.

“Central Queensland communities are some of the most resilient in the world; withstanding cyclones, floods, fire and drought.

“My own experience has made me resilient, and even though we all have different stories to share, this Australia Day I am honoured to have the opportunity to share my story of the power of the human spirit to overcome even the most challenging obstacles.”

CLERMONT WILL CELEBRATE AUSTRALIA DAY AT CENTENARY PARK 5pm to 9pm

There will be a street parade, official ceremony with Australia Day Awards and Australia Day Ambassador Scott Stidston.

Activities include free sausage sizzle, horse carriage and pony rides, jumping castles, kid’s activities, rock climbing and mechanical bull ride.

PUBLIC NOTICES WATER RESTRICTIONS ADVISORY LEVEL 2, CLERMONT EFFECTIVE FRIDAY, 17 JANUARY 2020 Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents that Level 2 water restrictions have come into effect from 4pm Friday, 17 January 2020. Current storage in Theresa Creek Dam, which supplies the local water treatment plant, is presently more than 1.25 metres below spillway level, which is the trigger for Level 2 water restrictions.

Residents will be notified through Council’s website, Facebook page and a letterbox drop to reconfirm the restrictions. We encourage residents to share this important message with their families, friends, workmates and neighbours given the drought conditions the Isaac region is facing.

LEVEL 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS

For residential users No watering on any day between 9am and 5pm Watering permitted 5am to 9am and 5pm to 9pm on watering days (as below) using a: • Hand-held hose • Automated Irrigation System (garden beds only, no grassed areas) Watering Days • Odd numbered houses water on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday • Even numbered houses water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday • Properties without a street number on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday

Commercial users No watering between 9am and 5pm when connected to the potable reticulation network and using potable water.

• Top up of pools, ponds and spas only – no filling • No topping up of tanks/dams unless for firefighting purposes

Water Tankers Mobile water tankers, other than tankers directly used for firefighting purposes, must not be filled with water from the water supply system except by way of exemption from Isaac Regional Council. Filling must occur via a metered standpipe only used on designated watering days in the specific time period as per residential use. Applications for an exemption must describe use and volumes required. Exemption approval will be based on social, health, environmental or economic considerations. AUSTRALIA DAY CLOSURE - CLERMONT WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITY Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents that the Clermont Waste Management Facility will be closed on:

MONDAY 27 JANUARY 2020 The Clermont Waste Management Facility will reopen as per normal operating hours on Tuesday, 28 January 2020.

ISAAC REGIONAL COUNCIL AUSTRALIA DAY CLOSURES Isaac Regional Council wishes to advise Isaac community members of the following Council closures for the Australia Day public holiday.

All Council Offices, Depots, Libraries, Community Halls and Recreation Centres will be closed on Monday, 27 January 2020.

Normal operating hours will resume on Tuesday, 28 January 2020.

CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE - ANNUAL CLOSURE

Isaac Regional Council advises residents and visitors that Clermont Historical Centre will be closed from: 3pm FRIDAY 20 DECEMBER 2019 Clermont Historical Centre will reopen on: WEDNESDAY 4 MARCH 2020 This annual closure enables Council to proceed with preservation work, digitisation, research and development of the upcoming exhibitions.

1080 WILD DOG AND FERAL PIG BAITING PROGRAM 2020

Isaac Regional Council would like to advise all graziers that the baiting program for 2020 is scheduled as per the dates set out below.

Round 1 – Monday, 09 March to Friday, 03 April A second round of baiting will be conducted to provide landholders with an opportunity to undertake further control of wild dog and feral pig populations. Currently this baiting period is scheduled for the dates below.

Round 2 – Monday, 24 August to Friday, 18 September ‘Doggone’ factory baits are available outside of these times, orders must be made in advance and delivery is approximately three weeks from order date.

‘Doggone’ baits are supplied ‘at cost’. Factory baits are available for purchase through Council.

contributed by Clermont Historical Centre Volunteers WHAT IS THIS? The first cordial factory in Clermont was established in 1876 by E Clearderone. Olsson and Campbell acquired the business in 1877. By 1881, the business was owned wholly by Peter Olsson.

He retailed cordial, aerated water-commonly known as soft drink, wine and spirits.

The modern two storey factory built by Olsson on Drummond Street in 1902 was tragically swept away in the 1916 flood, taking the lives of Peter, his daughter Evelyn and factory employee Richard Hooper.

It was recorded that Olsson’s most popular production lines were kola and khedivial club and other flavours included raspberry vinegar, koola champagne, horehound beer and ginger ale.

The pictured bottle (right) was marked with Peter Olsson’s logo and patent number 14207. It was dated approximately between the 1881 and 1916 period. The bottle has a Codd-neck marble shape, designed specifically for fizzy drinks to retain carbonation.

To achieve this, a marble and a washer were enclosed in the neck of the bottle at the time of manufacture. The soft drink was bottled upside down for the marble to fall against the washer in the neck where the carbonated gas pressure held the marble in its place. To open the bottle, a wooden plunger was pressed down onto the marble to release the pressure, making a popping sound. When the bottle was tipped, the marble rolled to the bottom of the bottle, creating a small channel for the soft drink to flow out. Bottles such as these were rare as children would often smash the bottles to get to the colourful marble.

WHO IS SHE? Evelyn Olsson, the daughter of Peter Olsson, who manufactured and traded cordials and soft drinks in Clermont from 1881 to 1916.

Evelyn was a secretary of the Girls’ Friendly Society in connection with the All Saints Anglican Church.

On 28 December, 1916 morning, Clermont was hit with a catastrophic flood which claimed the lives of over 60 people.

As the flood waters rose, Evelyn, her father Peter Olsson and a factory employee Richard Hooper sought refuge on the second story of the Cordial Factory.

According to an eye witness account, it was unfortunate that the factory collapsed at three o’clock in the afternoon, drowning the Olsson’s, Mr Hooper and possibly others.

Evelyn was aged 14 years.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALYS CLARE Alys Clare is the pen name of British historical mystery author, Elizabeth Harris. Clare grew up in Kent, where her Hawkenlye novels are set and studied archaeology at the University of Kent.

She has also written the Aelf Fen series, the Gabriel Taverner Mystery series.

Her most recent book published, The Woman Who Spoke to Spirits, is a Victorian mystery.

CLERMONT JUNIOR MOTORCYCLE CLUB

Clermont Clay Target shoot the fourth Sunday of the month.

Clermont Junior Motorcycle Club provides a safe, controlled and legal venue for riders of all forms dirt bikes (from the age of four years old) to enjoy their sport. Bikes and safety gear must meet Motorcycling Australia scrutineering standards.
