IN STEP WITH COMMUNITY ON CAPELLA ST FOOTPATH Improvements to the footpath between Herschel and Sirius streets are planned as part of Council’s 2018-19 Capital Works program, funded under the State Government’s Works For Queensland program. Mayor Anne Baker said the footpath upgrade would help Isaac Regional Council improve pedestrian safety in Capella St.
“We want to have a conversation with Capella St business operators and the community to ensure we capture and address, as much as possible, any concerns they may have,” she said. “This is Clermont’s town centre and we want community buy-in on the proposed outcomes, including issues such as the type of finish applied to new sections of footpath, within the limitations of the project budget.”

PUBLIC NOTICES DOG RENEWAL NOTICES WITH 50 PER CENT DISCOUNT OUT NOW Renew your ruff friend’s rego and claim your 50 per cent discount before September 7, 2018. It’s not a far-fetched idea to register man’s best friend now and then you’ll be able to claim the discount next year. The great thing about registering is that if Council picks up your dog, rangers return them for free for the first time. If the dog is unregistered – owners will be up for an impoundment and registration fee before they’re released home. To avoid this, harness pure puppy power and register,
microchip and make sure your yard is secure and safe. When you’ve got your dog registered, anything is paw-sible as the fees will also help fund essential services in the region’s animal management. Please note: Council is experiencing some technical issues with dog renewal registrations via BPay. Please call 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227) or visit your local Council office for assistance. Council apologises for any inconvenience caused.

People are urged to avoid the immediate area. Those considering visiting the locality, which is popular with prospectors and trail riders, are advised to exercise caution as sinkholes can occur without warning. COAL, GOLD AND GROWING OLD CONTRIBUTED BY JOHN BURNETT, PRESIDENT ON BEHALF OF BELYANDO ENTERPRISE NETWORK INC
Belyando Enterprise Network (BENI), together with Wall Planning and Environment, continued promotion of the Seniors’ Living survey at the Clermont Gold and Coal Festival last weekend. Some interesting trends are beginning to emerge. As well as many locals attending the festival, BENI representatives were able to talk with visitors from as far away as Melbourne, including some who are considering leaving the city to move north in their twilight years. Their survey responses will help to identify the key reasons why towns like Clermont may be attractive to them. BENI is greatly appreciative to everyone who spent time on Saturday discussing this important issue. Thank you to all who have completed their survey and returned it to Wall Planning Office or Clermont Pharmacy. Almost 40 completed surveys have been received so far. Your information and thoughts on your future retirement plans are crucial for the success of this survey. The importance of retirement opportunities for those in the 50 to 60 year age group has come to prominence, as the ageing of rural populations in Queensland is recognised. Demographic work commissioned by BENI in 2017, indicates that the over 65 population in rural Queensland may increase by 89% in the next 20 years. John Burnett, spokesman for the BENI Group explained, “This figure may be much higher in Isaac Region, where younger towns like Moranbah, Dysart, Tieri and Middlemount are just reaching maturity, with the first residents born in those towns approaching retirement age.” With the new Queensland Health High-Care home being ready for residents in the next few weeks, BENI is investigating the opportunity for Clermont to become the ‘Retirement Hub’ for the Central Highlands. This may incorporate development of supported living options at the soon to be vacant Monash Lodge building, and further development of a ‘Seniors Lifestyle Village’ in the heart of town. The construction of suitable units for residents to live in comfort and with companionship of other like-minded seniors in Clermont would provide an option not presently available.
“The small scale of development has been mooted as a major impediment for the commercial viability of this type of village,” John Burnett admits. “However, communities like Blackall, Theodore and Yeppoon have successfully launched this type of seniors’ project. It simply requires a new way of viewing ‘what is the ideal community’ for a specific locality?” Thoughts raised so far include the concept of a ‘Seniors Village’ being an integral part of the Clermont community. BENI Committee member, Jenny Cruickshank commented, “With 60 additional retirees living in the community to volunteer for groups like Meals on Wheels, supporting the residents in the new high-care facility, reading and other support in the schools, increased membership for local clubs and community organisations, increased demand for medical and allied health services and stimulation for the Clermont businesses, holds some appeal and would be a significant boost to the town. This concept must be seen as a ‘rural hybrid’ where the limits of an urban ‘Retirement Village’ can be overcome!” This can only be achieved with the support, commitment, and ‘Idea Input’ from our local community. BENI urges all members of the community to contribute their thoughts through the current survey. Copies are available from the Wall Planning Office in the Arcade, on line, or from Clermont Pharmacy. All survey results will be analysed to establish the strength of support for this type of development. If your group or committee would like to further discuss this opportunity for Clermont, please contact Renee Wall to arrange timing. Please mark next Tuesday, August 28 on your calendar if you wish to attend the ‘Community Drop-In Session’, anytime from 3pm-6pm at the Wall Planning Office in Turner’s Arcade. BENI will further develop the concept of a Virtual Village, which is gaining popularity in America, in the next contribution to the Clermont Rag.
