Clermont’s Centenary Park is set to receive an extensive upgrade and Isaac Regional Council is seeking community feedback on the concept design.

Feedback sought on Centenary Park revamp One of Clermont’s most valued community spaces, Centenary Park, is set to receive an extensive upgrade and redesign. Council is proposing to redevelop Centenary Park and is seeking community feedback on the facilities and features residents would like to see included in the design. Local Clermont Councillor Barbara Stranks said the upgrades would be a welcome improvement to one of the town’s most frequented outdoor spaces. “The proposed changes are focused on improving facilities and amenities to create a vibrant and inviting recreational area for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

“Noteworthy improvements include establishing a series of picnic and barbeque settings, installing casual seating and improving walkways and lighting, to name just a few.” “Our community thrives on an active outdoor lifestyle, so it’s very important that we take care of our open spaces to improve the quality of life for both existing and future residents,” Cr Stranks said. A standout feature of the redevelopment includes demolishing the existing, dated toilet block and replacing it with a new, centrally positioned concrete stage. The stage will be surrounded by new lawns, with expansive views of Hoods Lagoon providing a stunning backdrop for community events.

Residents are encouraged to view the full proposal online at www.isaac.qld. gov.au/hoods-lagoon, or join Council for a free sausage sizzle in Centenary Park from 3pm to 5pm on Friday May 1 to review and submit feedback on the plans. Feedback can also be emailed to jessica.blackburn@isaac.qld.gov. au with the subject ‘Centenary Park Feedback’, or provided at any Council office, up until 12pm Friday, May 8. For further information about the Centenary Park Redevelopment or the please contact Council, Monday to Friday during business hours on 1300 472 227 or visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/ hoods-lagoon

Blair Athol Bush Sports celebrates 70 years 1st – 3rd May Second excerpt from History of Blair Athol Bush Sports written by Ron Scott) ……….. With funds low, some suggested a concert to raise money. About that time, others wanted money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. They and our mob got the Bar 20 going. There were a lot of willing actors and singers, so the whole thing was arranged: a play of Gabby Hayes, Hop-a-long Cassidy and Indians and so on. Our vocalists came as a travelling show and it went off well. I wouldn’t be able to name everyone, but there was a lot of really good talent. I would only be guessing if I said how much each party made, but it was so good the Blair Athol Bush Sports said that they would run another one. It was so good that we were asked to show it in Clermont! All up I think we made about £300 and that put us in front again. They called it the “Golden Nugget”. All this took place in 1953. Jim Scott played the part of a sheriff. Ivan Bettridge and Joan and Bill Harrison were extra good to us with music and charged nothing. From then on, the flutters were gradually phased out. The program for the next five years was just the usual flutters, bullock riding, and the odd buckjumper. One time, Mick Basham rode a horse called the Dawson Valley horse. We just ran him in off the reserve.

Mick rode him, but he got away with the saddle for a few days. Another year, Mick’s brother John rode him and he did the same thing. On the 1957 programme we had a buckjump ride and the riders rode in their own saddles. I think Johnno McGuinness won; Reg Russell placed 2nd, and Bill James 3rd. I may be wrong, but I think that’s the way it went. In 1958, again buckjumping was included, but they had to have their own horses and saddles. There was nearly always an open bullock ride. That started well back in the years. Bill Appleton and Steve Burnett were always good supporters. Over the years Arthur Scott always gave the poddies for the kid’s poddy ride. In 1959 the flutters were stopped and campdrafting came in. From then on, with nominations from campdrafting we got our noses in front financially with better programmes, bigger prize money and so on. But of course, expenses got bigger for the cartage of buckjumpers and cattle. There again, with the support of all the carriers we got a good cut, and always put in a donation from whoever. Don Kleier at the time always had a load of horses for us and our old mates Bill Appleton, Bill Faint, Col Dennis and Steve Burnett always, at some time had cattle for us. The first maiden campdraft was won by Eric Day. My wife, June, and I donated the prize, a cutlery set valued

at £22.10.00. The year after that Noel Scott won. Again we donated the prize as before. I would like to point out as well as the activity of the sports, there was always a ball on Saturday night. That took a fair bit of organisation - judges for ‘The Belle of the Ball’, supper, music, doorkeepers, raffles and so on.………… I remember weeks of work: days and late nights getting ready for the May weekend, not only for the men, but the women connected with the committee. From the Sixties and Seventies, as well as a ball on Saturday night, a dance was held on Sunday and Monday nights. ………… to be continued next week. MARK THIS WEEKEND ON YOUR CALENDAR Friday 1st May - Campdrafting, Heritage Dinner (All tickets to be pre-booked @ 38 Jellico St or contact Prue: prue.lonergan@riotinto.com; Adult $30, Child $15 (5 & under 15), Toddler $5 (under 5) Saturday 2nd May–Gymkhana, Campdrafting, Rodeo, School Boys’ Rodeo, Mutton Busters, Calf Scruffing, Bush Sports Sunday 3rd May - Campdraft. Who will be 2015 Rural Ambassador for the Isaac region? Clermont Show - The Isaac Region’s Show Monday May 25 - Wednesday May 27 Are you a young person with a strong commitment to the rural industries in your area? Are you between twenty and thirty years of age? Are you passionate about the agricultural show movement? Are you living in the Isaac region? Would you like to become involved in your local show? If you answered ‘Yes’ to some or all of these questions, you will be eligible for the 2015 MARSH Rural Ambassador Awards which is run in conjunction with your local Clermont Show – The Isaac Region’s Show. The aim of the MARSH Rural Ambassador Awards is to highlight the importance of young people in rural and regional Queensland, in particular those associated with the agricultural show movement. The award identifies those people actively involved in their local show, who have a sound knowledge of current rural issues affecting their local areas, Queensland and Australia and have a strong affiliation with agriculture. The award seeks young people who symbolise

the rural spirit – young people with vitality who are forward thinking and have a passion for the land and local agricultural shows. The competition is run on four levels: The winner at the Clermont Show progresses to a Sub-Chamber final which will also be held in Clermont this year; the winner of the Central Highlands Agricultural Shows SubChamber (CHASS) contest will compete in the State Final held during the Royal Queensland Show (EKKA) in August; the winner of the State Final competes in the National Final which is held at one of the State Royal Shows. Initial judging is held prior to the 2015 Clermont Show, with the winner announced at the Commonwealth Bank Greet With Meat function on the evening of Monday May 25. In 2014, local veterinarian Zoe Rickertt nominated for the Rural Ambassador Awards. Zoe enjoyed a week at the Brisbane Exhibition and commented, “We all had a fabulous time down at the EKKA, with the State Parliament visit, interviews and presentation dinner all highlights. The Rural Ambassador

program is one I am grateful to have been a part of. It was an experience from which I have obtained some great new friends and contacts within the agricultural industry, while allowing me to gain further insight into the show movement. While addressing some of the issues at the heart of the agricultural industry, a lot of fun was had along the way, and I strongly encourage any young person with a passion for our industry to seriously consider giving it a go.” Some exceptional opportunities are available to the state winner. In the past, State Rural Ambassadors have received as their major prize, trips to New Zealand, Edinburgh, and Zambia to attend the Biennial Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth conferences. These overseas experiences for the winners of the state Marsh Rural Ambassador Awards have provided a stimulating and inspirational networking opportunity along with some interesting and exciting touring of other agricultural nations in the world. Health Matters ANZAC DAY – 100 years later One of the many lessons that we have learned from events such as WWI is to be considerate of the serving impact on the physical and emotional wellbeing of our soldiers and defence personnel. Consequently, several support groups and resources have been developed by the armed services, many of which are as useful to our non-service population as well. Veterans associations The Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans’ Association provides a comprehensive service to current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force in all aspects of military compensation. The Returned and Services League (RSL) aims to serve the interests of its members, veterans, the ex-service community and members of the Australian Defence Force. The RSL can provide a wide range of support resources to RSL members and their families. Young Diggers provides services like compensation, welfare, military to civilian transition and family advice for all serving and ex-serving personnel of the Australian or New Zealand Defence Forces. The Returned and Services League of Australia, the RSL and Services Clubs Association and the Department of Defence have joined forces to establish Operation CARE. The scheme provides up to one weeks ‘Rest and recuperation’ at sites throughout the country for selected Defence personnel and their immediate family, where the Defence member has been repatriated to Australia as a consequence of wounds received in combat operations. Legacy is a voluntary organisation supported by veterans, servicement and women, and volunteers drawn from all walks of life. The organisation support and services now extend to include the dependents of members of today’s Australian Defence Force who lose their lives as a result of their military service Department of Veterans Affairs links The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) provides a range of benefits and services to veterans and their

dependants for injury, disease or death which is related to service with the Australian Defence Force. Eligibility for benefits depends on where and when a veteran served. At Ease helps veterans, ADF personnel, and family members identify the symptoms of not coping. At Ease can provide tips, treatment options & resources and has clinical resources for health professionals who may be treating members of the veteran & defence community. Civilian charity links Soldier On is about Australians coming together to show their support for our physically and psychologically wounded; we will always have their backs. The organisation enhances recovery, inspire communities and empower Australia’s wounded, giving those who have served our country the dignity they deserve and the chance to do and be whatever they choose. Mates4Mates is a not for profit organisation set up by RSL (Queensland Branch) to provide support to wounded, injured or ill members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and their families. Mental health links Mood gym - Self help cognitive behaviour therapy skills for preventing and coping with depression. Ecouch - Self help information and exercises to assist with depression and anxiety This way up - Self help courses for depression and anxiety based on cognitive behaviour therapy and other resources. ReachOut.com (for a range of topics), Mood Disorders (for depression) - Fact sheets, stories and videos on a wide range of mental health and wellbeing topics including depression. Aimed at a youth to young adult audience but applicable to all. Smiling Mind - Modern meditation and mindfulness. Aimed at a youth to young adult audience but applicable to all. DVA You Tube Channel - Videos aimed at educating people about various mental health difficulties including depression.

Assistive technology Dragon Naturally Speaking Speech recognition software is ‘Speaker Dependent’ speech recognition meaning that a small training text needs to be read to initially improve accuracy. This program can benefit those who may not be able to use a computer keyboard due to a disability. Quantum Technology specialises in creating and distributing technology for people who have a print disability (those who are blind, vision impaired or have a learning disability). The ‘ON TRACK with The Right Mix’ An app that encourages users to think about the impact of drinking on their lifestyle, wellbeing, fitness and the people around them. It also provides information on standard drinks, how much exercise is needed to burn off alcohol calories and, when a personal profile is added including gender, height and weight, gives a wellbeing score as the user continues to record their drinking. It is a self-help tool, and particularly useful as a brief intervention resource. The app also provides links to professional help and other information For information on any of these support services or technologies, please go to: http://www.army.gov.au/Army-life/Healthand-welfare
