CLERMONT RAG FRIDAY APRIL 20, 2018

HONOUR THE ANZAC’S SPIRIT IN THE ISAAC REGION Standing shoulder-to-shoulder from the coast to the outback, Isaac residents will honour the nation’s most revered commemorative services this month.

This year marks the centenary of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux. Throughout early April, in 1918, Australian units helped defend Villers-Bretonneux from this onslaught, but at dawn on the 24 the Germans attacked and captured the town.

Residents are encouraged to attend dawn and morning services across nine towns in Isaac for Anzac Day services on Wednesday, April 25.

Leading the British counter attack, the Australian 13 and 15 Brigades successfully cleared it of Germans on April 25.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker, who will be attending the dawn service in Moranbah and the morning service in Dysart, said the Isaac region will pay tribute to the sacrifices of diggers past and present.

This year, services will commemorate this action which effectively ended the German offensive launched a month prior and also marking the 103rd anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli.

“We will remember the tenacity, resilience and heroism our soldiers have done for us,” Mayor Baker said. “We will honour the strong sense of solidarity, sentiment and pride as we come together to remember the Anzacs and all those who fought for our country. “I encourage residents in the Isaac region to come together, not to glorify war, but to acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who contributed so much in shaping the identity of this proud nation, and those who continue to serve.”

LITTLE SHAVE contributed by Leigh Dargin There are supporters big and small for The Big Shave for Leukaemia Foundation. Clermont has a great little supporter in Llandyn Dargin.

Llando and his family are asking the community to support him by coming along to the Leo Hotel and support the raffles for Llando and the Leukaemia Foundation being held at 6:30pm on Friday April 27.

Young Llando, as his mates call him, has put his hand up to shave his head at the Leo Hotel on Friday April 27. Llando’s mum said “He wasn’t coerced into it. The decision was his alone.” Llando is a great junior league player, loves the Cowboys and adores Johnathon Thurston. He goes into various footy tipping competitions in town and is good at picking winning teams. The kids at school see him as a pretty good mate and support his decision to shave his head for leukaemia.

CR LYN’S COLUMN Rates notices are falling due and I acknowledge the cost of living pressures households are experiencing, particularly those on fixed incomes such as pensions. There are a range of payment options offered by Council and this includes paying your rates in instalments throughout the year, rather than waiting for the twice yearly notices to arrive, which can help with household budgeting. If anyone wants to know more about this, I’m more than willing to assist. Roadside litter along Copperfield Road is becoming an issue and I’m encouraging motorists to do the right thing and bin it. Let’s work together to keep Clermont beautiful. Littering is an offence with State penalties starting at $220. If you observe someone littering or throwing rubbish from a vehicle, you can report the incident to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection online at https://report-littering-dumping.ehp.qld.gov.au/

At the end of the day, it’s not hard to keep a bag in your car and put the rubbish into it. Last Friday saw me go to the football and barrack for the Clermont Bears. It has been a very long time since I watched my last game and I must admit to enjoying it thoroughly. Probably helped that Clermont won. Saw a lot of faces that I have not seen for a long time and it was a good to catch up. Next home game is this Friday night so I will be out and about again. Don’t forget next Wednesday is Anzac Day. This day is a special day when all of us are given the opportunity to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in the many wars and to pay thanks for those who have served and are still serving to make sure we still live in the luckiest country on earth.

YOUNG ONES DANCE THEIR HEARTS OUT contributed by Mim Rodda Every Monday morning if you wander down Capella Street you may hear the faint echoes of children’s music. If you’ve always wondered, it’s the Mainly Music Group. Mainly Music is a fun music group for parents or care givers and their young children aimed for kids aged 0 - 5yrs.

$5 per week for 1 adult and 1 child, $2 per week for additional children (over 1 yr old). Each session includes 30 minutes of directed music time followed by playtime and morning tea provided for both adults and children.

Throughout the session, children are introduced to music, creativity and much more as they develop gross and fine motor skills, language and imagination. A great opportunity to socialise with others for both the adults and kids! Come and join us, 9.15am every Monday (during school terms) at Life Church (formerly Sonrise), 58 Capella Street.

SUPER AFTERNOON AT KIDS CLUB contributed by Mim Rodda The Clermont Kids Club had a Super afternoon with a Superhero theme. Kids and leaders came dressed up in a range of costumes to fight the bad guys and learn about the real hero of Easter. Games included feeding a hungry Hulk and using Captain America’s shield to knock down the villains. The next Kids Club is today Friday April 20 and in honour of the Commonwealth Games we will be holding our own Kids Club Mini-Games. The games will run from 4:00 - 5:30 at Life Church (formerly Sonrise), 58 Capella St for kids in prep to Grade 6.

ANZAC DAY

CLERMONT SERVICES

Coordinated by the Clermont RSL Sub-Branch with support of Isaac Regional Council STORY OF ANZAC DAY Anzac Day commemorates the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. On 25 April 1915, soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed on the Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli. They met fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders and what had been planned as a bold move to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate. The campaign dragged on for eight months at a cost of more than 8000 Australian lives. But while the military objectives of the Gallipoli campaign were not achieved, it represented a defining moment in the history of a young nation. And the heroism, mateship and determination of Gallipoli’s Anzacs became legendary. War correspondent and historian Charles Bean described it thus: “Anzac stood, and still stands, for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship, and endurance that will never own defeat.” On 25 April, we remember the service and sacrifice of all Australians in wars and conflicts.
