Get involved in your Community Car Boot Sale this Saturday, October 20,at Centenary Park, Lime Street, from 9am to 12pm.

Staged as part of the nationwide Garage Sale Trail, it’s a unique opportunity for residents to clear out their pre-loved items, find treasure, meet new people and have some fun.

The award-winning not-for-profit event exists to create positive social and environmental change in communities across Australia.

Bookings and registrations are not required for the Clemont event, simply turn up on the day with your second-hand items to sell and you can be part of the recycle and reuse movement.

It is expected that this year’s weekend long event will involve more Australians than ever before, who will choose to reuse at over 15,000 garage sale events throughout Australia.

Mayor Anne Baker said the events being hosted in communities in the Isaac region present a fun and social way for Council to encourage residents to recycle and reuse.

“Reusing and recycling is good for the community and good for the planet too,” Mayor Baker said.

Garage Sale Trail events across Isaac offer a unique opportunity for residents to clear out their pre-loved items, find treasure and have some fun.

“It also provides a way meet your neighbours and connect with the community whilst decluttering and making a few extra dollars on your unwanted goods.

“Council is really pleased to be involved in this great community initiative for the second year.”

PUBLIC NOTICES WATER RESTRICTIONS ADVISORY LEVEL 2, CLERMONT EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 5 Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents that Level 2 Water Restrictions have come into effect as from Friday, 5 October 2018.

Current storage in Theresa Creek Dam, which supplies the local water treatment plant, is presently more than 1.25 metres below spillway level, which is the trigger for Level 2 water restrictions.

LEVEL 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS No watering on any day between 9am and 5pm.

Automated Irrigation System (garden beds only, no grassed areas).

Watering permitted 5am to 9am and 5pm to 9pm on watering days (as below) using a: hand-held hose.

Watering Days Odd numbered houses water on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Even numbered houses water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Properties without a street number on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Water Tankers Mobile water tankers, other than tankers directly used for firefighting purposes, must not be filled with water from the water supply system except by way of exemption from Isaac Regional Council. Filling must occur via a metered standpipe only used on designated watering days in the specific time period as per residential use.

Applications for an exemption must describe use and volumes required. Exemption approval will be based on social, health, environmental or economic considerations.

No water to be used for dust suppression.

PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council advises that Centenary Park will be partially closed from:

Tuesday, October 9 Until further notice Part of the park is surrounded by temporary fencing to isolate a roost of up to 4,000 little red flying foxes that have recently arrived.

The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets).

Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost and will provide the community with updates once a course of action is established.

Earlier this year Council trimmed some trees in the park to try and discourage flying foxes from roosting in the area. We are currently reviewing whether this has had any effect on the current flying fox colony.

We are also seeking feedback to help develop a Statement of Management Intent for managing flying foxes.

WATER RESTRICTIONS ADVISORY FOR MOBILE TANKER USAGE AT CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council advises residents in Clermont that water restrictions are in place and that mobile tankers require an exemption to fill from a standpipe.

If you see a tanker filling from a standpipe please note the registration number of the vehicle and report it to Council for investigation.

At present, there are only two exemptions are in effect for the purposes of providing domestic water for residential and accommodation use only. No exemptions are in effect for other uses.

Applications for an exemption must describe use and volumes required.

Tankers have the same restriction for days and times as residential users •

CR LYN’S COLUMN Well, last Friday the 5th October saw the residents have their last outing/drive/smoko from Monash Lodge.

Monday saw the start of the move for some of the residents to their new home at Montcler - either to Blair Athol or Copperfield wing.

Summer has certainly hit with a sledge hammer hasn’t it.

One thing about all this is that we don’t have to worry about having too many seasons.

You have winter, then you have summer. Makes knowing what to wear so much easier now that it is summer. Dress for the heat I say and you just can’t go wrong. Poor old Axel is starting to feel it and he just loves having a swim in the laggy whenever he can. Can’t say I am impressed with the way he smells afterwards but that’s the beauty of having two showers at home. He has his bath in the one that I don’t use so that’s okay by me.

I can’t prattle on too much this week or I won’t have enough room for Mr Bettridge’s poem or some photos.

Good bye Monash Lodge contributed by Bernie Bettridge Back about 1990 I was asked if I could write something for the opening of Monash Lodge. This was to be a home for the aged, a very welcome addition to our old town of Clermont.

The old ones would be able to come here instead of going miles and miles away.

The process was going to be over four days with the assistance of Mick Austen and the offer of his truck, however, the move ended up being done with the help from the Work Camp boys and Brent’s Rent truck in two very long days. Big, big thank you to everyone who assisted in any way. I think you could say that the residents are adjusting slowly to the change but it will take some time.

I said to my wife Jeanette, what do you write about a bloody brick building. Why not compare how some of the old pensioners lived, just an old hut made from scraps of iron and bag, to what they would have at Monash Lodge. So I came up with this poem.

Mr Bernie Bettridge one of our locals has written a poem about Monash Lodge which I was honoured to read out on our last Friday at the Lodge. I am including his poem in my column with Mr Bettridge’s approval. His words moved us all and made us think of past residents and loved ones who are no longer with us.

And an old man sitting by that fire with its billys and pots all black,

Yep, we have bats. So far council is isolating them in one area in the park by putting up the fence. As long as we can try and contain them to that area, then with any luck they will leave schools, other public places and your back yards alone. Here’s hoping anyway.

HOW CAN WE COMPARE I see a campfire burning bright outside an old tin shack

A folded bag on a rusty tin he uses for a seat.

As he sits there by his lonely camp with his old dog by his feet, He thinks about tomorrow, what will his future be.

No one to share his loneliness in these last years of his life, No family there to care for him no fond and loving wife.

His home a humble humpy on the bank of Sandy Creek Built from scraps of iron and bag just a place to live and sleep.

He had no modern comforts, no fridge or electric light, And some glowing coals in a blackened drum Warmed his camp on those winter nights.

And stored in kerosene tins in the shade of his old tin shack.

Well, Monash Lodge has done its job for about 30 years, but now it looks like her days are done, but I’m sure there will be some who will shed a tear as they see her doors close for the last time.

And his butter wrapped in wet rag,

Old Monash Lodge you’ve done your job

And the welcome mat by his huts front door was a torn and tattered bag.

and I’ll say you have done it well.

Yes, I see that old man sitting there,

the tears begin to well,

His water carted in two small drums on a pole across his back

Watching the flames from a burning log And it’s then I think of the difference at Clermont’s Monash lodge.

Yes, now we have this Monash Lodge where the old ones come to stay, Where they have each other’s company and are cared for night and day.

Their meals set on a table for breakfast lunch and tea, And an air conditioned sitting room where to sit and watch TV.

And as I sit here now with pen in hand As I think of all the old ones who have passed through your tender care, From the staff and all those volunteers.

Yes! There was always someone there, To pick up something you may have dropped Or to wheel you in your chair, To set you at the table for breakfast lunch and tea.

Oh! Yes I’m sure old Monash Lodge You’ll live on in our memories.

Yes, those old ones live in comfort now with thanks to a gallant few, Those people who have worked so hard to make it all come true.

PURE PEOPLE POWER ISAAC REGIONAL ARTS DEVELOPMENT FUND Calling all local artists, arts workers and community groups in the Isaac region! Round One of the RADF grants program is now open.

RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

We’re investing in creative and cultural experiences through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which strengthens regional communities, boosts cultural tourism, and enhances the quality of life in rural and remote towns and cities.

MONASH LODGE PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017/2018 contributed by Christine Marteene Where has 2018 disappeared to? It seems not that long ago that we were completing the 201617 year and celebrating the success that is the new bus.

We continue to struggle to get the committee together as regularly as we would like but we have managed to get together enough to maintain our role in Monash Lodge.

In the coming year that role will undertake a significant change as the residents move from the existing building to the new facility at the hospital.

We will move from a committee who has had to fund raise for maintenance and building expenses, to one who can concentrate on supplying a few luxury items to enhance our seniors lives as well as maintain the community bus.

The new Monash Lodge at the hospital has come together relatively quickly and appears to be very nice building. The rooms are well fitted out and quite large laying to rest the fears of some that the residents might be having to downsize personal living space. From my point of view, I have found the building very big.

I would like to take this chance to thank the committee, the hospital staff and the architects for their efforts in trying to reduce the residents’ levels of worry.

This has been achieved by a pretty good level of allowed input from all parties and information sessions for the residents. Time will tell if we have been successful, but we have received some feedback already that most of the residents are happy with their new surrounds.

As those who still have some fears, move in and utilise the new building we can only hope that they come to see the benefits that it might offer. I hope for the future that the community is able to get the number of beds increased to cater for the people who don’t wish to leave the area.

As I have stated previously, the role of the committee will now change. We have decisions to make about what that role will be and what the committee will look like in the coming years, how we interact with Queensland Health and what are the ownership guidelines for any equipment that we might raise funds for.

We also say goodbye to the old Monash that has served us so well over the last 28 so years. It will be a decision for council and the community what they want to do with the building. Personally, I hope that it is able to be utilised in some way for the benefit of the town and area.

To the committee, I would like to pass on my thanks for your time and support in what has been a trying year.

I would like to thank Frances for her efforts in coming with me to the Chant meetings. To Chris, I would like to thank you for your support and dedication as the treasurer. Chris will be stepping down from this position as she moves on to a new part of her life. I wish her and Dan all the best for their next adventure. You will be sorely missed.

I have enjoyed my time as president and take this opportunity to wish the new committee all the best for the coming year.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps.

This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

METAPWR: is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body, involving your upper and lower body and core muscles.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn.

The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat.

LET’S LIFT: this program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout.

This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights.

This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

CIRCUIT TRAINING: this is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program.

It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

METAFIT: this is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train.

Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.

CLERMONT JUNIOR CRICKET Results from last Saturday Three teams of Under 11’s played a cluster carnival to familiarise new players and parents to the new format of junior cricket.

A great morning was had by all.

Under 13’s played Magpies White at Epic and lost by five runs. Great game of cricket.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art specialising in submission grappling.

It is a non-striking sport that promotes fitness, self-confidence, respect, flexibility and teaches self defence strategies.

Match ball went to Clayton M.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes have now started for Adults and Kids (8+).

Darcie M took 2 wickets for seven runs off three overs.

Both Gi and no-Gi classes are being offered.

Kangatrainers are also trained in babywearing best practices and can help mums ensure the safest and most comfortable carrying positions for their babies.

TRX FLEX/STRETCH TRX flex incorporates strength through training, this class is capped at 6 people. 30-45 minutes.

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS Functional fitness trains your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports.

While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasise core stability.

STRETCH CLASS Improve the flexibility of your joints and muscles with our stretch classes. Stretching is a vital component in any fitness regime, whether you’re a fitness newbie or a professional level athlete, it can boost the effectiveness of your workout routine.

THUMP A 1 hour boxing for fitness class, boxing equipment is provided (gloved, focus pads, kickshields, etc). Inners must be work, these can be purchased from reception for $5 previous to beginning the session.

VIRTUAL RIP A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light dumbbell weights. 45 minutes – 1 hour in duration.

VIRTUAL CYCLE CHALLENGE Revolution by group Rx is a cycling program that brings the outdoor ride – inside. Interval bases cadence training takes your classes through sprints, hill and mountains, to achieve results and personal goals.

Revolution is a 60-minute cycling program tailor-made for anyone who can ride a bike. This class is capped at 10 participants.

KANGA TRAINING Kanga training is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular endurance/flexibility and muscular capacity/strength are enhanced. Unlike traditional exercise classes, new mums need not worry about finding a babysitter or minding an unsettled baby during class because the babies are worn on them and get to be part of the action!
