LIBRARIES GO CRACKERS OVER ALPACAS WITH MARACAS Isaac Libraries will be saving the dramas for the llamas as alpacas with maracas set to shake up a national page-turning escapade this month. Children from Dysart, Clermont, Glenden, Middlemount, Nebo, Moranbah and St Lawrence will join many across Australia and New Zealand for a picture book giggle-fest. Matt Cosgrove’s Alpacas with Maracas will bring together thousands of children across the country for National Simultaneous Storytime from May 2124. Mayor Anne Baker said the region is excited to be part of this national occasion. “It’s such a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores ageappropriate themes,” Mayor Baker said. “It also addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

CLERMONT SHOW LIFE MEMBERS - TAKE 2 contributed by Margaret Henn

The Clermont Show has always enjoyed continuity of family support in its operation, with responsibility passing from generation to generation throughout its 151 years of existence. Never was this more obvious than the crowning of third generation supporter Lyndal Tuttle to the role of Miss Show Girl

2019 last Saturday. Lyndal’s mother Barbara Tuttle (nee Lawrence) has been a backstop of the pavilion for many years and was heavily involved in Rural Youth and its role in the construction of the Rural Youth Pavilion at the showgrounds. Before that, both her father and her uncle were Life Members of the organisation. Her father, Roy Lawrence, was awarded life membership in1981 after a lifetime of involvement. He joined the Committee in the early 1960s and was always to the fore in any working bees and seldom missed a meeting. He was a keen exhibitor in the Show, winning prizes with cattle and sheep. In the pavilion, for many years he was a successful exhibitor of fruit, vegetables and home-made butter, and his wife Muir’s sponge cakes and bread were prominent. Roy had a particular interest in the poultry pavilion, where his white leghorns were often champions. In his last year, in failing health, Roy could not gather his usual entries for the Show, but he did not want to fail to be an exhibitor. He took along a walking stick which he had made in Borneo during his war service, at that time using bits and pieces of broken glass to shape it painstakingly. This interesting item attracted a great deal of attention and also received an award. Roy was satisfied that he had made some contribution to the Show. Roy’s older brother, Les, was also honoured with life membership in 1981. Les had been a staunch supporter of the Clermont Show over a period of some twenty years, serving in many and varied ways, particularly taking the responsibility of gatekeeper. Another family with generational involvement is the Burnett family of Bendemeer. Stephen Burnett served as President of the Rodeo and Show for many years and was awarded life membership in 1978. His wife Laura was also a supporter and was honoured with the task of opening the Heritage Building at the Showgrounds in 1995. Both their son John and daughter in law Jan have also been honoured for their contribution with life membership.

John worked in many sections of the Show, even working a short time in the pavilion with Andrea Moller and assisting Gordon Weckertt in the poultry and bird section, although he admits he still doesn’t know “the difference between a soft feathered hen from an Indian game bird.” But John’s main interest has always been the Cattle Sections and he served for several years as a Beef Cattle Steward. During his time with the Beef Cattle many new innovations were introduced. One was the carcass competition at Borthwicks in Mackay, including a hoof and hook class. Another was the Belyando Grain fed competition at Barmount feedlot and the meatworks in 1991, one of the first of this type of competition in Australia. John served as President for several years and was awarded life membership in 2002. He continues to exhibit cattle but his main interest these days is growing giant pumpkins (without much notable success). Jan was honoured in 2010 for her contribution over many years and she currently serves as President of the Clermont Rodeo and Show Society. The next generation of the family continues the tradition both as exhibitors and workers at the Show. Son Doug is currently Vice President and his wife Amanda has organised the Beef Dinner for many years, one time while juggling a new born member of still another generation on her hip. The Pownall family are another who have been strong supporters of the Show with brothers Alan and Ian and Ian’s wife Pam all being honoured for their contributions. As a husband and wife team, Ian and Pam’s contribution extended over many years. Their dedication was recognized in 1990 when life memberships were bestowed on both of them. Ian was Rodeo Committee Chairman for three years, Show Committee Chairman for three years and President of the Clermont Rodeo and Show Society from 1982 – 1984. Pam remembers it all began for her sometime in the 1970s. She and Jan Faint were wandering past the pavilion when a harassed Kevin Fogarty asked for help to fill out entries for the pavilion. Thus began a close involvement with the Show Committee that lasted many years, firstly helping Rob and Margaret Whelan in the main ring. Following this Pam became Show Secretary and spent many years working in the secretary’s box. More memories of Life Members next week.

SMALL BUSINESS TO BE EMPOWERED THROUGH FREE WORKSHOPS Crunching numbers and thinking social media will see Isaac region’s local businesses empowered during Small Business Week this year. Isaac Regional Council together with the Local Buying Foundation and the Bowen Basin Business Development Initiative in conjunction with the Greater Whitsunday Alliance will see some of the region’s influential presenters share their expert knowledge across a series of events. Mayor Anne Baker said Council is committed to supporting and being a strong advocate for small businesses in our region. “Our small business owners are real people, who work hard daily and I am excited to see these tailor-made programs come to fruition,” she said. “They are part of the backbone in feeding, powering and building our unique communities. “The sessions on offer will focus on improving digital strategies, payroll and tendering tips, and identifying better ways to connect and communicate to customers.” Chair of the Local Buying Foundation Kristy Marks said the Foundation continues to support organisations including Isaac Regional Council, Moranbah Traders Association and GW3 to offer business development workshops and training opportunities which support the business skills development activities identified in the Bowen Basin Business Development Initiative Strategy. “The recently provided Foundation funding supports the delivery of business development workshops for local businesses throughout the Isaac and Central Highlands regions,” she said. “Workshops like these are incredibly important for businesses and to help them as they build on, grow and develop sustainably, which in turn helps enhance our broader communities.” Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) CEO Garry Scanlan said it was vital for small business owners to have the opportunity to learn new skills that will help propel their businesses into the future. Mr Scanlan said GW3, with the support of the Local Buying Foundation have established the Isaac Business Support Program (IBSP) which assists businesses in the western rural and resource communities to be successful and sustainable. Part of IBSP is that it provides a Business Support Officer based in the Isaac region. “Small business owners in the Isaac region know how important it is to undertake professional development and to evolve their business as conditions change,” he said.

“These events will help build business resilience and help business owners connect, find their purpose and build confidence to create new ideas,” he said. These engaging workshops will equip small businesses with invaluable skills. Small Business Week is a great opportunity for local businesses to listen to new ideas, network with others and learn how to make their business more successful. The events will be held from May 27 to June 1 at Clermont, Dysart, Glenden, Nebo, Middlemount, St Lawrence and Moranbah. There are limited spots available, so make sure you RSVP before Friday, 17 May to secure your place. For more information on the Isaac Region and Local Buying Foundation’s 2019 Small Business Week workshops on Social Media Trends, Business Basics and Start-ups, Digital Marketing, Tendering Tips, Human Resources and Legal Basics for Business, Staff Retention and Attraction and Single Touch Payroll visit Council’s website to register. Greater Whitsunday Alliance in conjunction with Moranbah Traders Association, Belyando Enterprise Network Incorporated, the Clermont Community Business Group and the Dysart Business Group Inc will host networking events in Clermont, Moranbah, Middlemount and Nebo. The week aims to celebrate the vital contribution small business makes to Queensland’s vibrant economy. CLERMONT MEN’S SHED NEWS contributed by Allan Ufer Carrying over from our story in April. I won’t bore you with a blow by blow account of everything that the Men’s Shed has achieved. One of the first things that we did at the old powerhouse was to establish a garden and citrus trees. The garden beds are raised up about 900mm or on the old ruler 3 feet. A good idea for the old blokes we have as members. Dan Collins has had success with a variety of vegetables as well as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, banana grapes, apples, passionfruit and weeds. Dan loves his gardens and would welcome help from anyone to participate in some gardening. It does not have to be vegetable gardening as Dan has an ambitious plan to grow plants and shrubs etc in pots as well. A project the Shed has undertaken is a nursery type of seedlings to grow out area. A project the Shed has undertaken is a nursery type with seedlings to grow out side. We have obtained 3 structures of 6 metres x 3 metres and joined them up to a structure of 6 metres by 9 metres. We have applied for some grant money to install a reticulated water system and shelving. The water will come from a rain water tank system and be recycled. We already have the shade cloth, so fingers crossed in being successful with the grant to be able to finish this project. Men’s Sheds are not just building furniture and making toys, they are helping men build communities. See ya Allan
