COUNCILLOR JONES’ COLUMN Morning or afternoon to everyone (depending on when you read the Rag) hope everyone is well. I have just come back from Toowoomba after visiting my kids. Gosh it was lovely to see them after almost seven months. The weather was as predicted, fairly cold with drizzles of rain just to make it that bit colder. Must say, didn’t really care as it was lovely inside and to be able to catch up. Travelling back on Sunday I have to say that I have never seen so many caravans on the highway. Plenty of people taking the opportunity to enter Queensland and enjoy our wonderful winter. However, it remains for everyone travelling or not, to be aware of the many restrictions that are still in place so that we do not have any incidences in not just our Clermont, but in our state. It would be absolutely dreadful if we got any cases here that may be attributed to the touring public. I realise that the travellers play a very important role in the economy of our town, but let’s all continue to do the right thing and don’t be afraid to speak up if you see anyone not playing by the rules. Had morning tea out at the dam last week. What a great place to visit, have something to eat and be so

thoroughly welcomed by Steve and Maryanne. No wonder it is one of the most frequented places for people to visit in our shire. Almost felt like throwing in a fishing line. It’s ok, the feeling didn’t last long so all the fish in the dam are safe for a while longer. Axel stayed with Marg and Nicky while I was away and Marg sent frequent pictures of him doing what he does best. NOTHING. Still not sure if he missed me or not but I want to believe he did. How great is it though that family steps in and I didn’t have to feel guilty about leaving him behind. An update on his diet for those that are interested is that it’s not good. I really am ashamed of myself that I cannot deprive him of all of his treats. Oh well, better luck next week. Water restriction are now in place so let’s all learn our days and the times so that we conserve as much of our water as possible. That’s about it for this fortnight. Until next time …. Lyn

A HEALTHY SENSE OF HUMOUR It’s no secret that Clermont needs more doctors. I think we would all agree that, regardless of where we live, good health services are imperative because it can be, literally, the difference between life and death. On my recent trip I was lucky enough to catch up with the infamous Dr Gerome. Congratulations to Clermont4Doctors for this great initiative to help increase community support for their campaign for more doctors. I have been fighting for better healthcare throughout the electorate and, although, the federal government has committed extra funding to the Clermont area, there is still work to do. Campaigns like Dr Gerome provide a unique way of sharing the message and, if you follow either my page or the Clermont4Doctors page on Facebook, you will know that I have used this campaign to give my federal counterparts a “gentle reminder”. You have my commitment that I will continue to work with whoever I need to in order to get this issue fixed as soon as possible. I am in Brisbane for a parliamentary sitting and, after this sitting there will only be another two sittings before the election. That means limited time to debate quite a lot of important legislation, some of which has been on the backburner for months now. I guess we shall see which legislation the government prioritizes between now and then, but I am hopeful we can address some of the important issues that deserve attention. JOBS ON THE WAY! We are now starting to see the benefits of the Carmichael Mine project. The awarding of the latest contracts is great news for all of Queensland. To have over $1 Billion worth of real work on the ground in Queensland will make a huge difference, especially as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The knockers of the Carmichael Mine claimed there would be very few jobs created yet, here we are, with one contract providing 600 much needed jobs. In addition to the jobs, Australian companies are supplying over 26,000 tonnes of steel and over 300,000 sleepers; that’s jobs throughout the state and the nation.

The people of Clermont have every right to claim credit for getting this project happening. I will never forget the community support shown back in April last year. From the people on the street in their Start Adani shirts to people like young Jack Lawrence who reminded us all of the role that our resources industry plays in our communities. I’m proud to have supported this project from the very beginning and I’m proud of the role I’ve played in proving the knockers wrong. Most of all, though, I’m proud of each and every person in Clermont who stood up for the jobs this project will provide and stood up for the community. It is indeed an honour to represent an electorate that stands together when we need to in order to get our fair share of the pie. It’s amazing what we can do when we work together! If we can capture that spirit again when it comes to our healthcare needs, I’m confident it’s another issue we can overcome. Until next time, stay safe and well. Dale Last, Member for Burdekin
