DIG IT, ISAAC GARDENING COMPETITION WINNERS ARE GRINNERS A garden-loving, green thumb in Clermont has taken home the major prize for this year’s Dig It, Isaac Gardening competition.

Elizabeth Slattery of Clermont won the Best Overall Garden prize, a $1000 Shop Isaac gift card, proudly sponsored by Middlemount Rural.

Following a successful debut last year, Isaac Regional Council again partnered with generous local businesses across the Isaac region to encourage residents to make the most of spring and get out in the garden.

Mayor Anne Baker, who was on the judging panel, said she was delighted to see a variety of entries from across our region get involved in this year’s competition.

“Congratulations to Elizabeth Slattery for winning the best overall garden section, who walks away with $1000 to spend at local businesses through our Shop Isaac program,” she said.

This is the second year running that a Clermont resident has taken home the major prize.

The Best Lawn category was a new addition to the bill this year following feedback from last

year’s event, which had two winners tie and claim the winning title.

“I’d like to say thank you to our communities for rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty to bring this year’s competition to life,” Mayor Baker said.

“I would like to acknowledge the amazing support from our local sponsors. We could not have done this without their incredible help.”

PUBLIC NOTICES RATES DUE 27 OCTOBER - PAY NOW BEFORE RATES DISCOUNT ENDS Isaac Regional Council would like to remind residents there is two weeks left to take advantage of the rates discount period.

Ratepayers who make prompt payment on or before Wednesday, 27 October 2021 will receive a 10 per cent discount on general rates.

Some financial institutions take up to three days to process electronic payments. Please check with financial institution to ensure your payment is received by Council in time to secure discount.

Ratepayers who have encountered delays with the postal service in their area can register their email address with Council for an additional rates notice to be issued electronically.

If you have not received your rates notice, please contact Council.

After Thursday, 28 October 2021, unpaid rates have incurred 8.03 per cent interest per annum, compounded daily.

Council stood up last year in the face of COVID-19 uncertainty and froze rates and levies for residential and rural ratepayers while continuing to support the local economy through tough economic times.

Council have reduced the cent in the dollar for general rates to offset some big increases to land values, in particular agricultural land values, as a result of Queensland Government land valuations.

ISAAC RESIDENTS INVITED TO TAKE PART IN WATER NIGHT IN OCTOBER Isaac Regional Council is inviting Isaac households to sign up to Water Night on Thursday, 21 October, as part of National Water Week.

Households are being challenged not to use taps, showers and running water for one night only, from midday to midnight on Thursday, 21 October.

The use of water for hand hygiene and religious reasons is exempt.

Just by registering, Isaac residents will go in the draw to WIN a $50 Shop Isaac gift card.

Registrations can also be submitted by visiting your local library or calling 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227) and a team member can offer assistance.

During Water Night, Council is encouraging residents to practice ‘water mindfulness’ and to

Council will use the opportunity to monitor water consumption by tracking and comparing water usage differences on the night through Council’s free water monitoring service, MiWater. These results will be shared with our communities following Water Week.

The Australian Water Association organises National Water Week, which this year runs from Monday, 18 October to 24 October, to build awareness around the value of water.

Seniors Month is being celebrated throughout Queensland during October and to mark the occasion, the Clermont Historical Centre is offering free entry to anyone holding a Seniors Card.

TAKE HOME SOME F5F MAGIC! During October, our littlest library patrons will be able to take home some First 5 Forever magic to treasure forever.

Isaac families who attend a First 5 Forever session at their local library or special Pop Up event will be able to take home a F5F Rhyme Time booklet to keep.

Only one copy will be given per child for the month so if you have more than one child attending a F5F session, all children in the family can take a copy of the booklet.

TAKE YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO! Remember the days of the old school yard when your best friend suddenly became ‘the enemy’ because they were in a different Sports House to you?

You both argued that your team was the better team and would win the interhouse swimming or athletics carnival.

If you both competed in the same event, did you try to beat your friend across the finish line?

Interhouse sports events have long been important highlights of the school year calendar.

Clermont State School’s tradition of interhouse sports began back in the 1940s when the school was divided into House Teams for interhouse and inter-school competitions.

Three House Teams were created, and a colour was allocated to each team Students competed for either the Cerise, Light Blue or Dark Blue team.

The House colours were later changed to Red, White and Blue.

Students wore starched white cotton uniforms for sports – shorts and collared shirt for the boys and mid-thigh dresses for the girls.

Satin ribbons in team colours were sewn on the uniforms but had to be removed before being washed as the colours in the ribbons ran.

When the Clermont Secondary Department was added to Clermont State School in 1959, two teams were created for the ‘high top’.

One team was named Yarro, meaning lightning, and had yellow as it’s colour.

The other team was Biturro, meaning thunder, and red was its colour.

In 1970, the Primary Department changed its House names to Collins and Armstrong in honour of Michael Collins and Neil Armstrong who, along with Buzz Aldrin, were the first humans to land on the moon.

Collins didn’t get to walk on the moon as he stayed in orbit while Armstrong and Aldrin did set foot on the moon.

Sports uniforms changed too over the years and by the 1980s, a yellow T-shirt with the school emblem emblazoned in black on the front was part of the sports uniform for both primary and secondary students.

Boys wore black shorts, and most girls wore a black pleated netball skirt. Every pleat had to be ironed back in shape after washing.

The t-shirts have long been replaced by polo shirts in House colours and girls now wear shorts or skorts Sports equipment in the past would be considered ‘primitive’ by today’s students.

Jumping pits for long, high and triple jump were made from sawdust, obtained from local sawmills.

Sand replaced sawdust in the pits for long and triple jump and large foam mats were used for high jump. 1 War chants also changed over the years and are more politically correct these days.

Who remembers ‘Biturro had a little rowboat with a silver bell’ ‘Yarro had a submarine and blew them all to….’

ON THIS DAY……124 YEARS AGO Thursday, 28 October 1897 Gallery collapses during Town Hall ball Whenever a ball was held in Clermont, it would attract a very large crowd.

Ladies would dress up in evening gowns and men were spruced up in suits.

Balls were very much a social gathering and people came from all around the district for a social evening of dancing to the tunes of a live orchestra.

Balls were often held at the Clermont Town Hall.

When the old Clermont township occupied the flat land between Hood’s Lagoon and Sandy Creek, the Town Hall was built on the southern

side of the lagoon on the corner of Capella and Lime Streets, about where the children’s playground stands today.

The Town Hall was a large, double storey wooden building.

On Thursday, 28 October 1897 a dance was underway at the Clermont Town Hall when the gallery collapsed.

One hundred and fifty people had been standing on the gallery and many received minor injuries.

However, one man had his back broken, a girl injured her spine and head, a lady sustained a broken collarbone, and a man fractured his leg as a result of the gallery collapse. 2
