CLOCK IS TICKING FOR AUSTRALIA DAY AWARD NOMINATIONS Time is running out for residents in the Isaac region to nominate a mate, local community champion or quiet achiever for the 2020 Isaac Australia Day Awards.

Nominations close on Saturday, 30 November with winners to be announced at local Australia Day celebrations on Sunday, 26 January 2020.

Mayor Anne Baker is encouraging residents to act now to ensure they don’t miss the upcoming deadline and opportunity to acknowledge and say thanks to some of the region’s most deserving residents.

“The pure people power which drives the Isaac region provides an abundance of worthy nominees in our communities,” she said.

“Our annual Australia Day Awards are a celebration of the people, clubs, groups and organisations who have made a significant social, civic, sporting or cultural contribution within or on behalf of our region.

IN REMEMBRANCE Contributed by Melody Cole - Clermont Historical Centre Coordinator

Edward William Thomas Croft - Regimental no. 7210 Edward William Thomas Croft was born in 1893 at The Venus, the son of Frederick and Gertrude Croft.

He enlisted at the age of 23, on November 8 1916, and was assigned to the 15th Battalion.

While serving in France he contracted trench fever andwas hospitalised in England as a result.

He was awarded the Military Medal in October 1917, an award given to

personnel of the British Army and other arms of the ranked forces for bravery in the battlefield.

After rejoining the battalion in June, following another poorly timed bout of sickness, he was killed in action in France on August 8 1918, and was buried in the Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery, Cerisy, Picardie, France.

His country called. He answered.

We will remember them.

Ernest Gordon Bettridge - Regimental No. 5981 Ernest Gordon Bettridge, the son of George Bettridge and Annie Mary Bettridge was born in Theresa Creek, December 17, 1890.

He was also admitted to hospital for sickness on several accounts, his service being put on hold until his eventual recovery.

At the age of 25, Ernest was working as a cook, enlisting on February 21 1916. He was assigned to the 15th Infantry Battalion (1-20 reinforcements).

Ernest Bettridge was eventually discharged and returned to Australia on August 22 1919, where he spent the remainder of his life in Queensland with his wife until his death on August 24 1965, at 74 years of age.

Private Bettridge embarked on the HMAT ‘Itonus’ A50 on August 8 1916, arriving in France for active service.

Ernest met his wife Emiline Radcliffe of Hudderfield, while undertaking active service in England. The two were married at the Highfield Congregational Church on the December 21 1918.

While serving in the war Ernest suffered a multitude of injuries on the battlefield, miraculously surviving a gunshot wound to the head, a shot in the right arm and a shot in the right foot.

Ernest was awarded a British War Medal and a Victory Medal in recognition of service to his country.

The British War Medal was awarded to officers and men of British and imperial forces who served in World War I and the Victory medal was awarded to commemorate the victory of Allied Forces over the Central Powers.

SENIOR CITIZENS CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON Contributed by Danny McKay

It is with great pleasure that we announce the Clermont Gold and Coal Festival Committee will again host this year’s Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon.

Last year’s event was fully sponsored by local Business, Organisations, with community individuals in turn funding a beautiful luncheon for 110 of our local and district Senior Citizens.

To help fund this year’s event we once again invite businesses, organisations and individuals to sponsor a plate.

This will entail the sponsor contributing $25.00 per plate to fund the meal and contribute to the hall hire and drinks.

All sponsors will have a plaque attached to the place setting with information about the sponsor and best

wishes for the festive season.

The proposed date for the event is Sunday, 8 December at 11am at the Anglican Hall.

We would encourage sponsors to direct deposit their moneys to the Committees bank account: ANZ - Account No 460620104 - BSB: 014-550 or cheque or moneys to PO BOX 570 Clermont.

CLERMONT COMMUNITY NEWS Clermont Junior Bears Presentation day The Clermont Junior Bears recently held their Presentation day after a cracker of a season. Mick Charles went along for the day to help congratulate the juniors.

Bush Pigs Ladies day The ladies of the Bush Pigs Rugby Union Club with the help of a Smarty Grant from Clermont Coal put together a wonderful day for the Ladies of Clermont and surrounds to come together, socialise and watch a cracker game of Rugby. They hope that the success of this year’s event will make this weekend a “must do” on the social calendar for the region. Funds raised on the day will be split between the club and a local charity.

Clermont HR team Recently our Clermont HR Team attended three different events in the area of career pathways and employment for High School Students.   

Sandra Thompson carried out Mock Interviews at the Clermont State High School for Grade 11 & 12; Shari Barwick was interviewed by Grade 10 about 21 Century Skills and employability skills. This was a panel approach where the group interviewed Shari and could ask questions relating to resume building and interviewing skills.; and, Sandra and Anna Dennis attended the Moranbah Education and Career Pathways Expo

Battle of the mines The Clermont Senior Bear Rugby League club once again hosted the annual Battles of the Mines at the end of August. Competition was fierce with a full day of footy enjoyed by several men’s and ladies teams. Fleetco Peak eventually took on the Proud Miners in the final, with a win of 26-10. The Clermont Huntresses brought home the ladies competition with a win of 46-6 over the BMA Maidens.

The Smiling for Smiddy crew cycled into town on 25th August on day 2 of their cycle down to Brisbane as part of the Mater Foundation cancer research fundraising. Clermont Coal Operations proudly sponsored the community dinner to welcome the cyclists and crew to Clermont. This annual event is always greeted with excitement by the Clermont kids and their parents.

The Environment and Community team recently hosted the near neighbours of Clermont Coal Operations. As always there was much interest in the mining operations with the birds eye view of the pit, instead of the ‘big pile of dirt’ they drive past every day. They also viewed the ongoing rehabilitation efforts and received an update on happenings on the mine.

There was cuteness overload the day that the kiddies from the Clermont C&K Community Kindergarten.

These visits are so important as it gives the little ones a better understanding of where Mum and Dad go to every day.

Gold & Coal Festival The Gold & Coal festival is held on the 3rd week of August every year and this year was the 21st celebration of the event celebrating Clermont’s rich history of mining and support of local businesses. This year there were some amazing raffles, entertainment, the big inflatable, stalls and food as well as the “Paint a pan” competition which is a hotly contested competition of Clermont’s Artists.

DOES CLERMONT HAVE A FRENCH CONNECTION? Clermont is named after Clermont-Ferrand, a city in the Avergne region of France. Clermont-Ferrand was the ancestral home of Oscar de Satge who was one of the first European men to take up grazing in our area.

He established ‘Wolfang’ as prime sheep country, named the place because of the peak’s resemblance to a dog’s tooth. ‘Cheeseborough’ was also named by de Satge in the honour of Cheeseborough Macdonald who owned ‘Logan Downs’ and was reported to be de Satge’s ‘nearest and best neighbour’.

Cheesebourough was then consolidated into ‘Logan Downs’ in 1876. However, it is interesting to note that de Satge makes no note to confirm his naming of both Clermont and Cheeseborough in his book, ‘Pages from the Journal of a Queensland Squatter’.

ON THIS DAY....104 YEARS AGO - 12 NOVEMBER, 1915 On 12 November 1915, Constable A. Neill opened the first Police Station at Blair Athol. It was only a portable structure and it was not until April 1919 that a permanent Police Station was opened.

ON THIS DAY....101 YEARS AGO - 15 NOVEMBER, 1918 On November 14th, 1918 a tragedy occurred at Mount Coolan, a small mining centre near Clermont. Thomas Coolan had discovered the place and had worked hard to develop his mines in the area.

A miner named Bernard Thompson applied for forfeiture of the Mt Coolan Reward Claim owned by Coolan.

The case was heard in the Clermont Court House and Thompson won. Coolan appealed this decision unsuccessfully and on November 7 1918, the mine was taken from Coolan and given to Thompson.

Obviously unhappy with the decision, Coolan a week later went to the claim where Thompson was working and shot him dead. Coolan also shot another man at the scene who attempted to escape. Coolan then walked about two miles to a battery and shot another two miners.

After the four murders, Coolan then killed himself.

This was a terrible tragedy in our area’s history.

REMEDY NEEDED FOR DOCTOR SHORTAGE Contributed by Dale Last MP

As I recently said in parliament, all communities deserve access to first world medical services but, the truth is, we are not getting that right now in many areas, including Clermont.

Fixing this problem is one of my highest priorities and it should be a priority for all levels of government.

Both towns are welcoming and boast hard-working families that have a passion for their community and both towns have a need for, and deserve, quality medical care. The only real difference is that Home Hill is on the coast.

Quite frankly, I am fed up with hearing that Clermont residents are being forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to see a doctor because of a doctor shortage in the community.

I wish I could say that there was an easy fix but, this is a problem that is affecting many areas in regional Australia and the current system is clearly broken.

I have written to both the Queensland and the Federal Health Ministers to let them know that we need to work together to find a solution and that the current situation is just not good enough. Long term, neither level of government can solve this problem alone and there are also other groups that need to play their part.

Population wise, Home Hill and Clermont are very similar and with Ayr just 15 minutes away, there is a lot more choice for the residents of Home Hill.

In the short term, the responsibility for covering the medical needs of Clermont rests with the State Government but, like I said before, the Federal Government also has their part to play.

You have my commitment that I will work cooperatively with whoever I need to in order to find both a short and a long term solution. I will not give up this fight until it’s solved.

We need to look at the entire system from when a doctor starts training right through to recruitment, support and retention in regional areas. We need the input of industry bodies and medical schools as well because we need to identify where the problems are now, find solutions and ensure that this does not happen again.

There is absolutely no reason why Clermont should be overlooked by a doctor. In fact, there are small centres in my electorate where doctors are increasing the size of their practice and the services they offer.

For example, in Home Hill the local doctor has expanded from a single doctor practice to now having 3 fulltime

If you are interested in travel or planning a trip overseas, you may find World Trade Press helpful as it has travel guides, information about health and safety, phone and modem plugs, world time zones, clothing size guides and more.

The new system, Libero, commenced this week in Isaac Libraries and will provide improved online library services.

Click onto World Food to explore recipes and food culture by country.

Library patrons who use the online library services such as the online catalogue and digital collections will need to reset their password from 4 November.

Other sub links to explore in World Trade Press include, World Culture, Lingo Lite, Global Road Warrior, MapsOnline, World Business, A to A the USA and Food America.

Patrons will need to update their birth date details at their local library as it will be their default password when moving to Libero.

CLERMONT CLAY TARGET

We shoot on the first and third Sunday of every month. Arrive at the range at 9.30am to commence shooting at 10am. Anyone who is interested in shooting rifles or pistols are welcome to attend.

Clermont Clay Target shoot the 4th Sunday of the month.
