NEARLY $20M INJECTED INTO THE ISAAC REGION FROM NDRRA WORKS After two years of work, damage caused to Isaac roads and waterways by Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie has been restored through works jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). Tropical Cyclone Debbie and other weather events had placed a huge strain on 205 roads, which led to 706km across 4457 sites needing restoration and resilience works. Mayor Anne Baker said it takes a long time to bring roads and other infrastructure back to a high quality in the aftermath of excessive rainfall. “Eighty-five per-cent of Isaac’s road network was damaged after Debbie,” Mayor Baker said. “After an extensive amount of work, pure people power helped to rebuild the roads as part of a $50.1M works program.” Mayor Anne Baker said the restoration of Isaac’s essential public assets was crucial to ensuring the region’s economic lifeblood continues to beat, benefiting the communities by upgrading and restoring a large number of the roads. “The repaired and upgraded infrastructure will lead to safer roads, reduced travel time, increased resilience to weather damage and improved freight efficiency,” she said. “In addition to better roads, the Isaac region saw an economic boost of almost $20 million.

“More than 150 employees and subcontractors were involved in the delivery of the contracted work and the spend within the Isaac region came to a staggering 40 per cent of the total value from the works.” Mayor Baker wanted to thank the contractors who worked on the projects for their conscious choices to choose local. “The contractors used materials and hired plant from Isaac businesses. Moranbah, Clairview, Clermont, Dysart, Carmila, Middlemount, Nebo, St Lawrence and other regional Isaac regions have economically benefited from the value of subcontractor works.” The funding was made possible through the NDRRA joint funding initiative of the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments which aims to provide disaster relief and recovery payments and infrastructure restoration to help communities recover from the impacts of natural disasters. “Quality and safe roads are an important part of any community, and natural disasters can place a massive burden on ratepayers,” Mayor Baker said. “The extent of the works that were needed across the region would not have been made possible without the financial assistance from the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments.”

CLERMONT STATE SCHOOL CLASS OF THE WEEK 5/6P

CR JONES’ COLUMN Today’s Saturday and I am writing this out at the truck depot watching the rain turn the yard into a bit of a bog patch. Once again rain has washed out another event that I was going to attend. I was going to be on my way out to Mistake Creek for their annual fundraising event. It has only been postponed so I will get out there another time. Our annual show is once again done and dusted. Thank goodness the weather stayed kind to us and it only turned cold after the event. What a great show we had, there was something for all ages and interests and from what I have been told it was a definite success. Big thanks to Andy and the team for having the grounds look and function so well and thank you to the Isaac Regional Council for being able to provide such a wonderful venue. It takes a lot of work to get things to look so good. (Bit like some of us I guess). Friday night saw Marg S and I attend the first Blue Light Disco that Clermont has had for a long, long time. Can’t actually remember when the last one would have been held. Thank you so much to our local police, fire brigade and ambulance services who provided the entertainment and provided the BBQ sausages and drinks. Tell you what, some of our emergency services sure know their dance moves. The kids just loved it. Think Marg and I might be just a little bit past some of the moves. We had a great time as volunteers and most certainly will be shaking it up at the next one if the Sarge invites us. Clermont Hospital once again hosted their biggest morning tea last Friday morning. The event was held on the deck at Montcler and was wonderfully supported by the community. Judy and others once again outdid

themselves on catering for the morning. The diet just got blown out the window. Think I will just have to give up and enjoy the food that people have taken such a lot of time and effort to prepare. One event that still went ahead over the weekend was the Clermont Pony Club Draft. Let’s hope the rain didn’t deter people from going and having a great time. Have done the usual trips to Moranbah for meetings plus the ones that I chair in Clermont. Our doctor situation in Clermont is still not good but there are a couple of proposals that are being looked at to try and overcome this problem. Something for everyone to keep in mind is that it is not the responsibility of the Clermont Hospital to find doctors to fill positions at the surgery. Queensland Health are responsible to make sure we have a doctor at the hospital and these doctors also then have the right to private practice at the surgery. So to complain to the hospital about the lack of appointments at the surgery is fairly futile. Axel is looking absolutely bored at the moment, but I have told him that there is no way I am going to walk him in this weather. Times like this I wish I still had my treadmill. He could walk all day on that and not pester us. Probably not the same thing though. Well that’s about all for now. Until next time....Lyn

PUBLIC NOTICES CLERMONT WASTE WATER MAINS CLEANING AND CCTV RECOMMENCED Clermont residents are advised Council have recommenced waste water mains cleaning and CCTV inspection throughout the township as part of its commitment to improve waste water removal service quality and delivery. WHAT ARE WE DOING? • Council has engaged contractor Relining Solutions to undertake specialised cleaning of waste water mains in Clermont and conduct CCTV inspection of all waste water mains in the township. • The Relining Solutions cleaning process involves cleaning waste water mains using steam cleaning technology. Once the mains are clean a CCTV camera will be used to conduct inspections of all waste water mains. WHEN IS IT HAPPENING? To minimise disruption to households these works will be undertaken:

between 8.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Saturday from Tuesday, June 4 to Friday, July 12

WHAT TO EXPECT • Council will be working closely with our contractor to minimise any impacts of this work on your daily routine. • There is a possibility that there may be some water escape from the bowl of your toilet. It is advised that a 5 to 10 kg weight be placed on top of your toilet lid to minimise any affects. • A hand delivered notice of when your street will be done will be issued 2 days prior to any cleaning activity this will also include if any vehicle access to your property may be required. • To ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, appropriate signage will be in place, where necessary. REPORT A PROBLEM We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding as this important work is carried out to maintain the quality of your waste water removal and treatment network.

WATER METER READS ACROSS ISAAC - JUNE AND JULY Isaac Regional Council’s water meter readers will begin in June to record the water consumption for upcoming water notices. To help ensure the charges are accurate, efficient and reliable, the manual water meter read project will take place across Isaac between the hours of:

6am to 6pm Monday, June 17 to Friday, July 12 The program will not be operating during public holidays and weekends. This is in preparation for the water notices to be issued for the period of January 15, 2019 to June 30, 2019. This notice is expected to be sent to ratepayers in August.

All meter-reading contractors will carry official Council identification. Authorisation to undertake the water meter reads is under Section 37 of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008. Council has MiWater, a website where residents can sign up to receive water consumption information. Residents can set email and SMS alerts and be notified of water leaks and high consumption within days of occurrence, see www.isaac.qld.gov.au/miwater. For comprehensive information on different property types, localities and associated water charges, visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/water-charges or Council’s Revenue Statement which is available via www.isaac.qld.gov.au/budget.

WORKS ON LAGOONA HOUSE - CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents of works on Lagoona House from:

The works form part of the planned 2018/19 renewal program.

Monday, 10 June to Monday, 24 June

Council apologises for any inconvenience or disruption these works may cause.

QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT WASTE LEVY - ISAAC REGION COMMERCIAL USERS The Queensland Government is introducing the waste levy from July 1 as part of its waste strategy for the state.

Isaac region’s businesses produced about 18,000 tonnes of waste which was landfilled last year.

The levy zone includes 39 out of 77 local government areas and the Queensland Government has determined this includes the Isaac region.

Business and industry are encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle more, only sending waste that cannot be recovered to landfill.

The levy is part of a state government waste strategy for Queensland to increase recycling, resource recovery and reduce waste.

In relation to the waste levy in 2019-20, there is no plan to charge residents to use their local Isaac Regional Council waste management facilities, but commercial users are required by State Government to pay the levy.

One of the reasons for this is that Queensland is the only mainland state without a waste levy — resulting in Queensland becoming a hotspot for interstate rubbish. This means that all landfill operators, including Isaac Regional Council, will be required to pay the Queensland Government the levy of $75 per tonne sent to landfill in 2019-20. Regulated wastes will attract higher levy amounts. Council will have to recover the costs from gate fees and charges to its waste management facilities to pay the Queensland Government levy. Council is in the process of determining its fees and charges for 2019-20 and from 1 July, 2019, commercial waste customers will be charged higher fees to cover the waste levy.

Around 50,000 tonnes of waste was produced in 201718 throughout the Isaac region. The amount of waste we produce is growing. Only 35% of that waste was recycled or diverted from landfill. Isaac Regional Council is required to pay the levy to the Queensland Government. Residents can help by doing their bit to reduce their household waste and boost recycling such as reducing food waste, buying better, recycling right and choosing to refuse and reuse. For more information visit the Queensland Government’s website: www.qld.gov.au/environment/ pollution/management/waste/recovery/disposal-levy

If you require further information please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227).

POLICE CORNER Contributed by Sergeant Michael Rodda - Officer in Charge, Clermont It’s been three months since my last article and a lot has happened in that time.

chances or finding and arresting the person involved is significantly higher.

We’ve had our Easter Weekend, Anzac Day Parade, Bob Brown Convoy and the BA Bush Sports where over $45,000 was raised for SmashSMARD.

Just a reminder to be aware of when your weapons licence expires and get your renewal in early.

At our Easter Weekend we were grateful to have officers from the Whitsunday Water Police out on the Theresa Creek Dam policing the waterways. The officers said that almost everyone’s behaviour on and around the water was excellent and they are looking forward to coming again next year. The Bob Brown Convoy saw about 250 persons attached to the convoy come and hold an event at the Showgrounds. Apart from a few incidents everyone was well behaved, and people were able to have their say whether they agree with coal mining or not. We continue to target drug offences and have arrested five persons who have been charged with 15 separate offences. If you know of any information that may assist us in investigating drug matters, please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or let us know at the police station. By law, we must keep any information strictly confidential. We have also seen several traffic offenders caught with four drink drivers, one drug driver and four persons charged with either unlicensed driving or driving an unregistered/uninsured vehicle. If you see any serious traffic offences, please contact either Clermont Police or the Hoon Hotline (134 666). Please remember if you are willing to supply police with a statement and or video footage it means our

Also, we’ve had several fuel thefts in the area recently. Our only information is that it’s a vehicle possibly towing a trailer with a wider wheel base. If you have any information regarding this, please call Clermont Police or alternatively Crime Stoppers. Really great news is we held our first Blue Light Disco on Friday night (7 June) at the State School Hall. 78 kids attended with all emergency services helping out to see a great night enjoyed by all. Thanks to all the kids who attended, as your participation and behaviour was excellent. I saw some great dance moves and even learnt flossing and dabbing (yes these are legitimate dance moves, I wasn’t just brushing my teeth on the dance floor). We’re hoping to secure some funding to allow us to purchase lighting and audio equipment and then head out to Mistake Creek and Kilcummin State Schools to hold discos there as well. Just a reminder regarding getting in contact with police. If it’s an emergency please call triple zero, if it’s not urgent call Policelink on 131 444 or call the station on 4983 4444. Please be aware that the station is not staffed 24 hours a day so if you leave a message on our phone we will only be able to action it when the next officer begins their shift.

NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS A total of $50.1 million has been spent recovering and improving Isaac roads and waterways over 15 months. Tropical Cyclone Debbie and other weather events in 2016-2017 damaged 85% of the Isaac network of roads. The huge strain on 205 roads meant major restoration works were needed to repair 706kms across 4457 sites.

TC DEBBIE RESTORATION AND RESILIENCE

$50.1M WORKS COMPLETED

The works are now complete. Eligible works were jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). Local businesses saw a direct economic benefit to the region during construction of over $14 million. One project of note was the construction of eight concrete floodways on Bulls Head Road. These floodways will provide for a safer road for residents during times of wet weather.

BABY BOUNCE, STORY TIME AND CRAFT HOLIDAY FUN AT THE LIBRARY School holidays will soon be here and Library staff are busy planning STEM and craft sessions to help keep the children entertained during the holidays. You don’t need to wait until there are children sessions being held to visit the library with children, as they are welcome any time. The Junior Room has comfy seats to sit on and read a book together, or maybe have fun playing educational games on the iPad. Children can also unleash their creativity through Lego play – just ask the library staff for the Lego boxes. Children 12 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18.

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a great way to connect with other parents with young children. BABY BOUNCE (0-2 years) Come along on Thursdays from 9.30am to 10am. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. STORY TIME AND CRAFT (0-5 years) This is held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 10.30am.
