FROM THE PAST contributed by Clermont Historical Centre Volunteers

ON THIS DAY… 101 YEARS AGO February 1919 In February 1919, the ‘Peak Downs Telegram’ complained of the “unsightly mass of muddy fluid” often fouled by “mobs of travelling cattle.” The newspaper article was referring to the Clermont Lagoon. Twelve years on, in 1931, Clermont ratepayers convened a public meeting to discuss a possible water scheme for the town. Three years later another public meeting was organised to consider the same proposal. This gathering resulted in the construction of a pipeline from the Lagoon along Capella Street to the Railway Station, providing the townsfolk with a modest water supply. Residents however were required to cart water from a tank at the end of the pipeline. Reference: Dan O’Donnell, “A History of Clermont And District.” Belyando Shire Council, 1989, page 44

WHERE WAS THIS BUILDING? Gold was discovered in the Peak Downs region in 1860. After the news broke, many prospectors from Rockhampton flocked to the district with the shared hope of striking it rich. Winter & Veale’s, a general store located on Drummond Street was the first business to pop up along the banks of the Digging’s Lagoon. By 1865 the town had grown substantially, consisting of three public houses, several boarding houses, a bank, a hospital, a courthouse, a newspaper office, several shops and workshops, and a blacksmith forge. The Clermont Court House was originally established on Lime Street along the bank of Hoods Lagoon, approximately where the current old Shell Service Station is situated. The Courthouse was destroyed in the 1916 flood. In 1919, the Courthouse was reconstructed at its current site on Daintree Street. 2019 marked the 100 years old of the building. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY A Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone. Don’t have a Valentine’s Day date?

SPOTLIGHT ON MARY HIGGINS CLARK VALE 24 DECEMBER 1927 - 31 JANUARY 2020 The Queen of Suspense, writer Mary Higgins Clark died on 31 January, 2020 in Florida at the age of 92. Higgins Clark’s writing career began in 1975 when her novel Where are the Children?, was published by Simon & Schuster. She stayed with Simon & Schuster during her entire writing career. Higgins Clark wrote 56 books and all were best sellers. Before taking up a writing career, Higgins Clark worked as a secretary and copy editor, then briefly as a stewardess for Pan-American Airlines. After she married and began raising a family, she supplemented the family’s income by writing short stories. Higgins Clark also worked for many years writing radio scripts until her agent persuaded her to write short stories. Her debut novel, a fictionalised account of George Washington’s Life, didn’t sell well so Higgins Clark decided to focus on writing mystery/suspense novels.

Don’t despair – be a Library Lover and go on a ‘date’ with a book.

CLERMONT BEARS Welcome to the 2020 Central Highlands Rugby League season. The Clermont Bears are pleased to advise that we have successfully registered to return to the CH competition in 2020. We are officially #outofhibernation2020 and so very keen to get back on the paddock. We have attracted some new faces, plus some of our favourites will be returning to don the green and gold. Training is going well under the helm of new coach, Tony Wilkinson. Tony is originally from Longreach, and most recently from Rockhampton. Tony is keen to become involved in the Clermont community, and most importantly, to become involved with the Bears. ‘Wilko’ has been involved in Rugby League for more than 30 years, most recently with the Under 18 Capras in 2018. He is passionate about the game, and while his goal is to see the team successful, one thing he will guarantee is that the Bears will be competitive on the field in 2020, a sentiment that’s creating shivers of excitement in all of our supporters. We have been overwhelmed with the support of our community to date. Our sponsorship drive was a major success and we would like to publicly acknowledge the following businesses with very deep pockets who have jumped on board to be a part of the revival of the Clermont Bears.

We hope to keep you well informed throughout the year. We will send updates through to the Rag plus post to our Facebook and Instagram pages, https://www.facebook.com/ClermontBears/ If you share a photo, or post about the Bears, be sure to use our 2020 hashtag - #outofhibernation2020.
